Holy crap!!! 6 videos to find this one... "wavy snap ring" Yeah, I couldn't figure out where it went. I knew the drum, but couldn't remember whether it held down the spring or the clutches. Thank you for being thorough!
Good stuff. I just pulled apart my 1st transmission. An 04 4r70w. Leaking out front and no forward gears. Got a few more things to check now. Good tips on what to replace
Hello Gary, thanks for an excellent video. I have a 4r70w in which the vehicle sounds like a transbrake being applied when in reverse (engine loads w/o movement). The vehicle goes forward in N & forward gears. All forward gears work smoothly (upshift and downshift). Primary pressure was 70psi (idle) and 100psi (WOT). I checked the gear selector at the transmission w/o dropping the pan to make sure it was selecting the correct gears. I'm thinking this is a servo that isn't releasing (1-2 apply?)? If I drop the valve body and the servos are fine, what are your thoughts on where to go from there? Thank you.
Bill Myette Bill, the problem with your trans may be that the forward clutch is locked on and won't release, (the clutches and steels are locked together so it's always on). When you select reverse now you have the reverse clutch and band applied and the forward clutch is applied because it's locked together, end result the car won't move in reverse but will move forward in neutral. Not much you can do with this, trans will have to come out to be repaired or overhauled. Gary
Perhaps you can help, on my 4r70w the car moves slowly forward in drive, seems like it struggles, the revolutions just climb up. Well I have noticed that if i rev it up to about 5000 rpm the transmission engages and works fine and it drives and it shifts gears with no problem. As soon as i let it coast to a stop (when it gets to about 25 mph) it feels as if it starts struggling and once it completely stops the same thing happens again, I have to rev it up in order for it to shift into gear. I have changed all the solenoids in the valve body but no luck. What do you think could be the issue? Would I need a complete rebuild?

Gary Ferraro, I'm a new subscriber. I have a trany problem and I bet with your expertise and extensive knowledge you'll be able to tell me what the failed component is based on the rather unique symptoms. Is there a way I can pay you for some phone time? The vehicle is a 2010 Crown Vic Police interceptor I just acquired. 75,000 miles and 10,000 hours on the clock. When the gear selector is in drive and the overdrive is disabled the trans doesn't make the 3rd gear (direct) shift it will remain in 2nd past the redline RPM. When the overdrive is enabled and the trans tries to do 3rd it neutrals. Then if you put it to the floor it goes back into 2nd. It has never gone into 4th for me. I don't have a reliable source to get a history on the car. If it is likely a valve body issue I will attempt to fix it myself. If the trany needs to be pulled I will likely make this a parts car and put it on a salvage title until I find a trany or someone needs an engine then I'll sell the whole car to them. I don't want to pull the pan unless I'm %70 sure it is a valve body issue. I have about $1000 in the car right now
Hello William, So if you have no 3rd or it "runs away" in 3rd, this is a problem with the direct clutch, pretty common problem, not much can be done other than to pull the trans. If it runsaway in 3rd it will not go to 4th, the direct clutch is on in 3rd and 4th, the front band also comes on for 4th. Thank you for subscribing.

How often do you find bad or broken parts not included in the rebuild kit? I suppose you can order them separately.
They can be ordered, I see the reverse band broken more often then the O/D band
Quick question. Whats the difference between 4r70w and the 4r75e are they the same transmission

Hello KB,
If this drives good in the foward gears, then you have a broken reverse band.
Reverse band is not broken ugggg
ok, if the band is not broken, check the drum right behind the pump, see if the rings are frozen on the stator
Bellville return spring is broken what purpose does it serve exactly it was broken in 3 places now I need to know what would break it in 3 places ?? im thinking someone slamming it in reverse
They do tend to break, i see that. Just replace with a new one, they get weak and break.
what size were the bolts( threads) that you put into the front of the pump to pull it out? Thanks for the videos.
There are threaded holes, but i just use 2 of the pump bolts at the threaded holes to pull the pump out, comes out fairly easy

Sure, that can be done with out tearing down the trans, drop the pan and filter you will also have to move the linkage. What year is the car
Hello can the overdrive and reverse piston and spring be replaced without taking out the complete transmission.
Thanks
Yes it can just drain it and take snap rings out. Just be ready to catch everything cause it falls on u
can you remove the oil pump without removing anything in the case?
Yes you can
can a 4buy 4 be put in a 2wheel drive
Any tips for an 06 f150 that goes into a neutral state at 30 mph?
The trans is a 4R70W or 4R100?

#rd clutch or drum is no good, clutches could be smoked or the drum could be stripped, unit would have to come out.
