Buying A CHEAP Z28 Camaro That's Only Been On FIRE A Little Bit

  • I used to see this 1993 Chevy Camaro Z28 rolling around town and flagged the owner down to talk about it. My car is a 94 with T-Tops and an auto but this car is about as close to a perfect twin as you could have. Max reached out to me a couple weeks ago and said the car had caught on fire and he wanted to sell it. I said I'd come check it out thinking I'd be parting it out and using the body to breath some life back into mine. Now that the car is back in the shop I think we'll be able to save this and put it back on the road. I can't wait to have matching LT1 Zs!
Thanks to ‪@100PercentJake‬ for helping with the unload!

It's the FireMaro! I've been a Camaro guy my whole life. My dad owned a couple 80/81 Z28s before I was born, he bought my mom a demo 91 RS and then in April of 94, when I was 3 and a half, he bought the white 80 Z28 that's in my picture and we've had it ever since. It's my pride and joy. I owned a 96 V6 Maro because it was dirt cheap and why not, but I've always loved the 4th gen cars. So many people hate them but I love them. The second gen is my favorite, with the 80/81 being my absolute favorite.

My buddy burned up his 72 Chevel, or however it's spelled, when his secondary fuel filter dropped dropped onto the header. I had looked at the filter fuel line combo a week before and told him he should tie it up before something bad happened, he agreed and we moved on.
He and another buddy went to 7/11 to get big gulps or something and I was hanging out in the parking lot tinkering with my car and waiting for them to get back. I heard sirens and saw some smoke and they came walking up and I asked him where his car was and he said it went to chevy heaven and said they were driving and he suddenly smelled fuel really strong then flames exploded up from under the hood and he managed to get it stopped and they bailed out.
It burned all the top of the engine then followed the wiring through the firewall and started torching under the dash.
He gave up and sold it cheap, the guy who bought it paid to have it rewired and had it painted white. I had run it a few times in my Dart and always beat it with the factory 318 with a Thermo Quad, early 340 manifolds, and a 727 with a stage 2 shift kit and 3.23 sure grip rear. He had the factory 350 with a cam, AFB, and headers.
When I saw it repainted I tried to run him but he wouldn't try, might be because I had a 383 GTS nose on it🤣 Fun and sad times...

I have a 97 camaro ss, black with red strips, 6 spd manual. 32mpg in the highway at 70 - barely turning 1500rpm in 6th.
No optispark failure but i may upgrade to the msd waterproof unit. A good puddle with stall it right out - but it will dry out before the tow truck arrives.
Also the egr valve is defective from the factory. Mounts to the back of the head!
Fuel pressure regulator failure - something rattling around inside occasionally sticks it open and fuel pressure drops so it cant run. A head scratcher lol. Usually it fixes itself and is almost impossible to find.
I think you should put a fuel pump access door in, im planning to do that before the fuel pump dies - 25yrs old. Water pump failed
    A pia to get out.
Fans not kicking on - car overheats. Sensor failed in the water pump for the fans - fyi there are 2 of these that look identical. One is for the overheat lights (come on after its too hot) and the other is for the fans (trips at a much lower temp. Get the wrong one at the auto-parts store and you'll never figure out why the car overheats !
Needs an upgraded torque arm, bbk, etc make these for abt 700$.
The factory one connects from the front of the diff to the transmission. So if the car had sticky tires and could hook up you'd rattle your teeth out. The new ones connect to the trans cross member - not the trans itself and have a builtin driveshaft loop.

I am glad you are saving it. A car with that little fire damage should not junked. That said those F body cars were awful. I had a 1999 Firebird. The build quality was questionable and some of the design of the cars was also questionable. The car was pretty large on the outside but cramped on the inside.(this car was much bigger then a Miata but seemed to have less drivers seat room as i was cramped in the Firebird but had plenty of room in the Miata). The passenger front seat was pretty much unusable for a passenger due to the raised floor due to the cat being under it. In the 6 years I owned it, I had to replace the coolant expansion tank 3 times as the top of it is used as the battery tray and the battery hold down was brittle and would crack and break just from driving the car around. Once that broke, the battery was loose. 3 times i had to replace the whole thing. The bolt was torqued down to proper specs and it was never touched after that and it still broke. Working on the engine was a lesson in patience as despite the car being so long, the engine was still half under the cowl. There were some pluses about the car. The headlights went up and down without getting stuck and the car did have a nice throaty exhaust sound. I finally got rid of it and bought a 1994 Ford Probe which was so much easier to work on and so much more fun to drive.

Dude, had the 10" JL in the stealth box on my 1999 Z28, amp mounted in the same place. Had some nice 6.5"(I think) components in the doors, man it would absolutely kick the hell out of some Pantera, Killswitch, Lamb of God, Mastadon, etc. Also this looks "decent" for the year, might be worth doing paint/body work if it has zero rust and has never been in an accident. I'm not saying it needs a $10,000 concourse paint job, but for a person who is handy and knows body work this would be a great project.

I had one of my cars catch fire before. 95 Mustang GT, supercharged, SVO side exhaust, MSD ignition, rims, everything. TSB for a seized cooling fan bearing which could lock up the fan, overload the wiring, and cause a fire. Of course this happened to my vehicle, and it was much worse than your car here. Battery was toast, fuel lines, radiator, supercharger tubes, belts, fender and hood were all destroyed.
6 months after my car caught fire, they turned it into a full blown recall, naturally. Anyhow someone actually bought it from auction and managed to track me down to call me about the details. I guess he was planning on fixing it, and I was surprised that the insurance company didn't want to. They wound up paying me out to the tune of about $12k.

It would be cool to make a repair series for this car, keep the video revenue, and then give it back to the kid. That would be awesome.

Seems like a steal for $2k. Fix some wiring and fuel lines, then just clean it up and undo all Jake's favorite mods. Easy. Nice find!

I had for 22 years a ‘95 LT1, 6 speed manual, Trans Am, convertible. I was amused that that the spark plugs were good for 100,000 miles per the Owners manual, But the wires needed to be changed every 20,000 miles. And it wasn’t a job you can do unless you have a lift, you needed to drop the exhaust manifolds. So what was the point of changing the wires and not the plugs while you were in that deep. Only changed out the Optispark and the water pump 1 time and that was when we serviced the heads and installed new head bolts, after 15 years it was starting to loose a little water.

I k ow about that engine due to them being the worst engine for a c4 Corvette. The optispark gets leaked on by the water pumps weep hole. Theya slo suck because you ahve to take off the whole front end to have room to get out the optispark. You can get a later one that is less vented and make a weep hole pipe to make it leak away from the optispark.
