Shinkai - Not Separation, But Connection

  • Makoto Shinkai is one of the most interesting directors working in animation today, but it wasn't until 2016 where he truly grabbed the attention of the world with his record-breaking feature Your Name. In this video I explore how his emotionally-driven films are bringing anime to new fans around the world, how his shortcomings are as integral to his work as his successes, and how his portfolio is bringing us all together.
    Mild spoilers throughout this video.

Honest question, why do you use dubs?

    • @BeyondGhibli
      @BeyondGhibli  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1320

When it comes to watching anime I watch in Japanese, but I use dubs when making videos because they are less distracting. I find it disconcerting in video essays when the narrator is talking to you in English and then suddenly you have to read subtitles - if I can help it I like to keep things in one language for the sake of flow. If the dubs are truly awful - or there simply aren't any - I'll use the original Japanese.
Pinning because I get this question a lot! :P

@Anonymous Anonymous as much as i disliked "your name" or his work on "weathering with you" as well, his work has brought a lot of anime fans together to discover such a amazing creator/author that connects all of us some how, and For sure will bring us amazing works in the future as well. Its truly insensitive to say such bad things whens someone friend passed away and they truly enjoyed this specific film . Anime is something that brings everyone together one way or another, perfectly fine to enjoy one anime and not enjoy the other, we all have our own different taste. One of my best friends loves "your name" as much as i dislike it, im glad he enjoys one of my all time fave anime films creators makoto shinkai and has discovered his others works as well and enjoyed them also. I don't mind you saying its bad film when it comes to actually discussing why that is, but when someone shares a personal situation of someone passing or something personal that has truly happen to them, it truly is insensitive. We all come together to enjoy anime one way or another, and there is a time and place to discuss one anothers disagreements, but this isn't a time and place for one of them. Especially when it comes to someones personals friends passing away and them this enjoying specific anime film.

I think Your Name (heck, even most of Shinkai's works) should be watched without a critical mindset for the full emotional roller coaster, at least on the first watch. Your Name's flaws are very apparent, but let them slide until after the movie, don't think about it, relax and enjoy the popcorn. Let yourself dive deep into the goosebumps the soundtrack gives you and enjoy what's on screen.

You sir, made my night. I watched "Your Name" while in the throws of depression after my father died in late 2017. It was the first time that I ever watched an anime on my own. I'd seen DBZ and Spirited Away in the past because others made me, and I wasn't a fan at all. "Your Name" in no uncertain terms saved my life, and by extension so did Makoto Shinkai. I will always be grateful for what he did for me.

@@tambwetombo781 Apologies in advance for the length.
Like I had indicated, my father passed away in November 2017, and I fell into an incredibly deep depression. I am normally a pretty emotional person, but my wife noticed that I had become a bit of a shell of who I was. I was unfeeling and uncaring, and had very little hope. I even had thoughts of suicide. Thankfully, my wife confronted me about it, and when she told me I seemed emotionally dead, I tried to do something about it.
I watched comedies, movies that used to make me emotional... Nothing worked. I had taken to searching the internet for "movies that will make you cry"... and stumbled on "Your Name". The premise seemed weird, but I liked the trailer I saw and it looked good. I found it online, and watched it. Then the scene at the festival where they were all looking up at the comet happened... I got goosebumps, and I choked up a bit. Then the scene at the high school after, Taki in disbelief of what his phone was doing... I gasped, and felt tears start to well up. Then I basically lost it from the scenes leading up to "Katawaredoki", all the way to the end.
I had not cried so hard in my life. Everything I was holding back opened up, and I felt something melt off of me. I felt like I gained some clarity, but I decided that I needed to watch it again. I did, and cried almost the entire way through. My life that was turned upside down, was finally starting to right itself again. I've been a fan of Shinkai's, and anime overall, ever since.
      I hope that helps?

I started with 5 Centimeters per Second and I only watched it because it was suggested and I had no other show to watch at the time. And then, it became my favorite anime movie because of how painful and how real it could be.
Then I watched Voices of A Distant Star which I thought wasn't that great visually. But as the story progressed, I was heavily invested emotionally. Then there was his most recent works.
I have watched Weathering With You and it may not be as awesome as Your Name, it was still a Makoto Shinkai film and he also made progress especially with the moving cameras which is extremely hard to fix the perspective when animating.
To understand his films better, those should be watched with full attention and not while texting someone or scrolling on social media. I find that an insult to all the people who poured out all their time and effort to create every single frame in the film. The things I want to tell them, you mentioned here.

I think the comment that Shinkai's work (and Your Name specifically) is emotionally-driven deserves extra emphasis. Your Name has logical holes if you look for them (staring at the phones for as long as they do should've immediately clued Mitsuha and Taki in on the first big twist) but those holes don't really matter. It's an emotional journey first and foremost, which people butt up against because we've been conditioned too much to accept a single type of storytelling, where logical progression and sensible order are the main goals of a narrative. And I applaud that you look into these elements, when it is too easy on TH-cam to go full CinemaSins and logically nitpick a story to literal death.

I love to see your videos pop up, such in depth and incredible reviews are truly something to behold. The way you play the OST from the anime your reviewing into your review perfectly blends your review into the clip being shown and RADWIMPS perfect score in your name made this one of my favorite videos so far.
Keep up the great videos :)

Each and every theme in the movie is painted sharply but however fades in its opposite forming a vague but perfect painting titled -- 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒖𝒃𝒊.
I rewatched the movie so many times, and every time it hooks me into the center of its stormy emotions, joy and tiredness ; connection and separation ; hope and despair of living one's life to the fullest, leaving me overwhelmed with how beautiful it could be and how beautiful it was, with the 'it' referring to everything.

Thank you for making this. This is so beautifully done. That last sentence was so powerful.
Ever since I first saw this movie I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s always in the back of my head. Everything is so compelling about it from the stunning visuals to the cultural nuances to the heartbreaking emotion. It’s a movie like no other. It makes you feel empty, and sad, but somehow you channel the determination of the characters and feel inspired to move forward with a new look on life.

You really upped the gears on this editing this time round! Those masking shots for the mobile phone swipes is just so good. I really appreciate that you talked about Shinkai’s flaws which is why was I unable to appreciate his earlier works; they were stunningly beautiful but lacked something that really touched my heart. ( Despite that Garden of Words is my favourite) The evolution throughout his flims really reflects him and I’m sure his storytelling can only improve from now on.

Man! This was brilliant! I’m not an expert on films, but this was a great storytelling and commentary. How you arrange the sequence of the scenes from different films according to the message that you wish to deliver on that moment was really beautiful. You’re amazing! Keep up the good work, I wish to see your development until the final form of your potential.
