- Sodium cyanide is quite useful in chemistry, but it's probably best known as a poison. When used in chemistry, it can be a bit scary to work with because of its toxicity. However, what I find surprising, is that it still takes a decent amount for it to be dangerous.
WARNING: Cyanide is EXTREMELY toxic and dangerous. It was handled very carefully in this video. DO NOT recreate anything you see.

Edit: Nope I was incorrect. Almonds contain trace amounts of cyanide. Which is nuts. In places outside of the U.S. this cyanide is not removed and you can actually kill yourself by eating too many.

I’m taking orgo lab right now, and it always startles me to read just how potentially deadly some of the chemicals we work with are… but the precautions are like “where gloves and try not to breathe it directly up your nose”, because it’s not a substance that’s dangerous in the context of a lab environment. It really goes to show the principle that poison is in the dose and delivery. Something that’s killed thousands of people throughout history is completely safe to handle. Something that we breathe every day like oxygen can be dangerous in a lab because pure O2 is highly combustible. Formaldehyde can be a highly dangerous carcinogen, but our bodies naturally produce it. Chemistry and biology are so fascinating!
To be fair though, as someone who works in a lab, different chemicals have different SOPs. (I'd imagine most orgo labs aren't going to use super harmful chemicals at risk of students doing something stupid and getting hurt lol.) If I'm handling something pretty harmless like ethanol then yes, I'm just wearing gloves, but if I'm working with tetrodotoxin then I'm wearing a mask, two pairs of gloves, full-body coverage, putting a "do not enter: toxins in use" sign on the door, and also have been required to take TTX-specific chemical safety training (at least, these are the requirements of the university I work at).
Edited to add for those not familiar with it: TTX is roughly 1000x more toxic than cyanide - for example, a lethal dose given my weight/size could be as little as 60 micrograms, aka 0.00006 grams
Oh youd be surprised. At the university I work at in Germany where they do ridiculous old fashioned hardcore chemistry for the students, bachelor students work with dimethyl sulfate in 20g scale or reactions producing chlorodioxide. Its kind of absurd. Luckily I did my last round of supervisiong this summer. @sllizarrd
I'm a Lead Laboratory scientist at a biodiesel company. I've been out of college for a little over a year. I majored in microbiology but somehow ended up at a job more chemistry related 🥹 but anyways my job doesn't even compare to how stressful chem labs were for me in college. The dangerous chemicals we deal with include sulfuric acid and caustic acid. I double glove when dealing with those chemicals. I was helping one of our process engineers with her project and for this particular project, we use those two chemicals I mentioned. I nearly had a myocardial infarction when she picked up the glass jar of sulfuric acid without gloves. As a microbiology major during college we dealt with microbes that you can't even see with the naked eye. So for me all I could think about was just because the jar is closed doesn't mean that reminisces of the substance can't be under or around the lid. Even a tiny drop on the skin can do extreme damage, that could lead to necrosis.
@twins4life274 interesting to read, but I think you're getting microbiology and chemistry a little bit conflated here. Chemicals don't multiply or procreate (obviously I'm aware you know this). Ergo there is no real risk of minute amounts being present on the outside of flasks or vials (obviously as long as it is far below the toxicity dose). Sulfuric acid is highly corrosive as an acid, but it is really not very dangerous in small amounts. I never use gloves while handling it. Eye protection is much more advisable.
@@FrenkieWest32 yes that's true. I was basically trying to say just like I don't want microbes on my hands I don't want harmful chemicals to get on me either. I'm aware microbes and chemical substances aren't the same. When I'm dealing with oil, biodiesel, sulfuric acid, even DI water, gloves will always cover my hands. I value my 💰 too much to mess around and have something happen that prevents me from making the 🍞

I used to work in a dangerous goods warehouse that stored drums of Sodium Cyanide (used for gold processing). The drums were somewhere around 40 litres in size, with the drum lid held in place by a lever lock ring. The site would store anywhere up to 4 - 6 pallets of these drums, so at any one time there was hundreds of litres of Sodium Cyanide present.
On one occasion I noticed a drum which appeared to have about a small quantity (about the amount depicted in this video) scattered across the top of the lid of a drum which appeared tampered with. It was reported and swiftly isolated and neutralised (Presumably there was an incident investigation which followed which I was not privy to).
This was just one of the many various hazardous materials we stored. Others examples being Bulka bags of Aluminium Chloride, Hundreds of 205L drums of Monoisopropylamine (or 'MIPA' for short, very pungent stuff even when sealed in drums!), IBC's of Sodium Hydroxide (i.e. lye), Bulka bags of Ammonium Nitrate, and many more materials that I can no longer recall.
I never knew of anyone getting sick or poisoned from working at the site, however there were a few spills and exposure incidents that occurred before, during (and in all likeliness after) the three years that I spent working there. At the time I worked there, the security of the site was concernedly lax, although they were of the early stages of installing updated systems in the months before I left.
There was also a facility next door which produced and stored bulk quantities of pure Chlorine gas. It was stored in specialised cylinders which were perhaps just a bit larger than a forklift LPG cylinder in size.

Cyanide is present in a lot of places. You probably have a lot more in your house than you think. They are present in many seeds - apple seeds, for instance. Cashews are another potent source - so much so it is illegal to sell raw cashews - they are all processes to remove it. So you probably have cyanide at home sitting around innocently.
