It’s amazing how much history gets forgotten in the passage of 110 years or so. It’s crazy how stories like this just disappear until people like me did them up. Lol.
These smaller stories that are lost to history are the ones that end up, ironically, bringing history to life. Thanks for hunting this one down for us!
I'm like so many others and when I get up on Sunday Morning one of the first things I do is see if you have posted that week's episode of H/H. Great Episode.
Gosh, I'm impressed how conscientiously you do research and dig up all these historic documents to outline the stories for each of your episodes. Just downright great to watch. Thanks for your work & holiday greetings from Switzerland!
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for that. Nice comment and compliment. My last name is Benziger and that may be familiar to you because my relatives are from Switzerland. I hope to visit there someday but it hasn’t happened yet and I’m 62 years old.
@@jbenziggy Absolutely familiar, a class mate of mine had the same name. And if one day you do go for a family history hunt here in Switzerland, please let me know.
We read about these tragedies so often today, that we might forget there were always unnecessary tragedies. This is so sad. Thank you, for locating as many of the sites involved, as possible. I would definitely agree that this family suffered a lot of sadness. Thank you for this interesting, tragic story, Jeff, and Sarah, too.🥺🧡
As a current employee of the News-Sentinel, I can assure y'all that we don't get into feuds like that these days. I did once have a publisher in a different town that liked to say "Never get into a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel," but that was a while ago, and I don't think we have the relevance anymore. Fun facts about the bear atop the Lodi Arch: the original was papier-mâché, made for a parade float by the Stockton parlor of the Sons of the Golden West for a parade. After the parade it was stolen by the Lodi branch of the organization and hauled up to the top of the arch. It's been effectively replaced over the years after many refurbishments, and is now made of plaster. It was most recently repaired this year, but its paint was replaced with gold leaf in 2002. It originally faced south, intentionally facing its rear end toward Sacramento as a symbolic display of disrespect toward the state leaders, but faced north after a mid-century facelift. There were plenty of comments when they put it back up a few months ago about how shameful it is that it now faces north.
Another classic example of people not minding their own business. It's very hard to live in town, and worse if you have a bad neighbor. I know exactly how that is.😮 Thanks for Sharing this story. 😊
Lodi has been hit with multiple murders lately. Around the corner from that shooting was another shooting where a junky realtor shot a homeless man in the same manner. One on south Sacramento st where a man walked into a business and shot a man working in a rubber company. Even a disgruntled man that hired a hitman to kill a doctor that treated his wife and later died from that treatment. So much goes down in that little town, so it's never boring.
Very surprising that even back in 1911, a guy could do deliberate cold-blooded murder, and not only not get executed, but be back on the streets in a relatively short amount of time
Wow, it is a small world. Thank you so much for telling me about your experience with that newspaper. As you may be aware, I am a newspaper, editor, myself.

Jeff, another great video with historical background on small towns and their people in California. There are thousands of stories such as this one that would not be known if it was not for your channel. Your channel is truly one of the few treasures I have come across in recent years. Thanks for the good work.
As always I start my Sunday with History Hunters and as always another fascinating piece of history. Seems Axtel still had 1800’s Wild West mentality. Not only did his actions ruin his life, forever change his wife’s life but caused his sister suicide. For the Sollars they lived of a life of grief and tragedy 🎭. Their home and business long gone and forgotten and all that’s left are their headstones all for pulling over to do the right thing. I found Axtel on Find A Grave with no picture of his grave. I wonder who leaked the information of this inappropriate relationship? Why would the Stockton Newspaper print it wasn’t Charles? Odd don’t you think? I have drove through Kettleman a million times on my way to Pismo Beach. Jeff, who do think leaked this story to the newspaper 📰? Do think there was any truth behind the story? Maybe it was Axtels sister who committed suicide over her brother’s conviction.
Hi Jeff and Sarah, it's Alan here from Queensland Australia. Another great video. I hope you both have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy new year. Alan
My dear friend has a house right in that old neighborhood on West Walnut, one street over. Sadly he passed. His house was built in 1905; a beautiful 4 plex. Sadly he passed away in August. He would have loved to know this intriguing story of his neighborhood. I enjoyed it very much and I enjoyed learning a bit of history of Lodi. The names we see everyday on street signs now have meaning. Thank you for this insight of Lodi’s past. Thank you for your time, very enjoyable of our local history. -Nina
J B it's amazing how humanity still carries on. Just over 100 years has passed and incidents like this one still unfold almost daily. Great research and reporting. Great Vid.
I had never heard any of this story before now- great local history, though awfully tragic and senseless it seems. Thanks again History Hunters for history little known and largely forgotten. Really good stuff.
Interesting story, what drives people to kill one another for such petty reasons. Enjoyed watching. Great job putting this video together. Thank you for sharing. Take care Jeff. 🇺🇲
Great video. Lodi Memorial also contains the gravesites of James and Juliet Brier. They are my first cousins albeit 4x removed. James and Juliet were members of the Jayhawker Party who elected to cross, and give name to, Death Valley in the 1850's. There is a publication called Death Valley Heroine that documents the ill fated adventure. James Brier went on to develop Protestant churches and is credited as one of the UOP founders. His Brother William Wallace Brier is also an early day pioneer in Alameda County.
"Protestant churches"; that's a pretty broad field. Does that mean sometimes 18:24 he would found Methodist Churches, and sometimes Presbyterian Churches, and then later some Congregational Churches? Do you know which specific churches were founded by him, and if they are still in operation today?
@@kirkmacarthur80030:00 I am not sure which Methodist churches James Brier founded. He is credited with delivering the first Protestant Sermon in California. It took place in late 1849 or early 1850 in SoCal. The family was recovering from the Death Valley hardships before moving North. His Brother William founded multiple Presbyterian Churches. One of his churches is the original church in Livermore. William was also one, if not the first, of the Superintendents of Education in Alameda County. There is a William Wallace Brier school in Fremont, CA
Half of us were put on this earth to test the other half. Seems that went both ways equally between Mr. Sollars and Mr. Axtell. Interesting as always, Jeff. Thanks for bringing us this story!
"... thought he was a great man." Delusions of grandeur (narcissism), obsessive-compulsive (neckties), and no remorse (lack of empathy). A textbook psychopath. Those are born, not made. A bash to the head as a kid isn't going to cause it but a dysfunctional upbringing can exacerbate it because they are easily triggered by minor events of which others would not think much, if anything. Another great episode, Jeff! I love this channel!
Wow! This video is packed full of information and research and I really appreciate all that you put into this Jeff. Lodi is where I will reside for eternity at a very large cemetery there called Cherokee Memorial Cemetery est 1940.

Jeff, a great story that you showed. And thank you so much for sharing. To quote another person who stated, it''s just a case of not minding their business. I believe they're correct. Thank you so much for sharing Jeff and as always. I enjoy your stories.
Wow. And neat you went to the spot where he was shot. I’ll have to visit that location and also his grave sometime. Crazy how it used to be modern day back then..
Jeff never heard of this story before. Sollars and Axtell’s troubles were awful. I have been shot Jeff. And when happens. You don’t even realize that it happened. Other than seeing the blood. That’s why they used firing squads for years for execution. Thanks for sharing.
The fear...adrenaline alone kept him alive long enough to reach help. Truly tragic. (Is Kettleman City associated with that family? It's one of my stopping off points on the way to/from Tahoe!)
Can you do a video on the Hill House (Inn) in Lodi? Jane the trustee could give you info on the Hill family ...idk if she'll give info on the "treatment" of the house since then but that's also interesting.
Interesting. At the top of the building with the advertising on the side, it appears to say Frieberger (sorry if I misspelled it) Motors. I can’t help but think that is some relation of David Frieberger of Engine Masters and Roadkill Garage since the Roadkill Garage appears to be filmed in the Lodi area. Do you have any information on that family history? I’ve never heard of Woodbridge College. Does it still exist under that or any other name? I was going to ask about Kettelman and any relationship to Kettleman City, or lane, etc, but you answered that at the end. Thanks for the informative video regarding a town nearby.
Upon further investigation I found that the Roadkill Garage location is in the grape growing area near Earlimart, CA, quite a bit farther south, not near Lodi. Still there may be a connection because of the similarity of geography, climate, and the grape growing enterprise of both areas, and of course, the name on the building associated with “Freiburger Motors”.
Wow cattle drive from Missouri to California. Just imagine the hardships along that trail. If there is reincarnation I can see you as someone who started a newspaper in the 1800's or like the journalist that rode with Pat Gerrit to report the hunt for Billy the kid 🤣 your awesome at what you do and entertaining as well. Thanks for sharing 👍

I went to grammar school in Kettleman city and graduated in 1958. We lived om a farm about 5 miles away. Their were 4 other students in my class that graduated. It wasn't a one room schoolhouse as you might think the total enrollment was about 350 students but a lot of their parents were seasonal farm hands so in those days not a lot graduated. I am probably the only college graduate from there. I had always wondered who the founder of the community was and now sir you have enlightened me, thank you. 😎👍
Glad it was help to you, Gary! I have only been through there a few times en route to see my Uncle Donald in Morro Bay! It definitely is a poverty stricken area.
@@jbenziggy That's about right Jeff, when we moved there in 1950 about half of the property was desert right up to the hills and Dad and his crew plowed up sage brush to put in crops. And thanks for the reply.I don't put in comments unless it is pertinent but very few you tubbers bother to reply.🤠 👍
I especially liked this video. Axtell was a typical Liberal of his time, being a newspaper owner with an agenda -- and pushing to close saloons for one thing. Being easily angered and intolerant was another common trait of this Lib. Would like to see more videos on topics like this in the future. It relates so well to current times. And was thoroughly researched in every aspect.
My next door neighbour who moved in 5 yrs ago, is very self entitled. He made that know with 3 months of moving in. On top of that he is a policeman 👮♂️ who obviously should know better. He is the same age as my son 35, he has zero respect. It’s his first home, and he and his wife think they are the greatest. Thanks for this story Jeff. If you post next Sunday, that will be Monday ( Christmas Day here) I will have to watch the following day. Merry Christmas🎄to you and Sarah. Have a wonderful holiday. ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺
Behind the sollars grave marker was Jahant, identified be intrested knowing about that family. A road in acampo is named after them. David Kettleman at the end of video was nice too
Jeff, I am curious if you knew Mike Lingley. He was a son of Oakdale, who I met 14 years ago near Tom's Place. We formed an acoustic combo called The New Rock Creek Rsmblers. Sadly, his CF condition caught up with him, and he died at a hospice in Hughson 10 years ago.

Thank you so much, i have lived in lodi for 65 years and did not know that.
Yeah, great to see the old advertising still there. I often try to take pics of that stuff when I see it..
Thanks Jeff ..be safe 😊
Thank you, I will!
Thanks, Jeff, I was wondering about the Kettlemen name as your story progressed.Central California watching.
Yes, adverts on buildings are sometimes a unique time capsule of humanity!
Really interesting and surprising local history I had no clue about.
Thnx for another gr8 HH vid Jeff! Got my weekly fix! ~Chris
Fascinating story, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for listening!
Jeff yet another piece of forgotten history 👍🎅
TIL about the Kettleman Hills, City, and Lodi arterial. Another excellent vlog!
Yes! Thank you!
President Reagan said he didn't know he was shot
Oh my goodness Terry, I don’t want to pry so I will just say: thank goodness you are okay (I hope).
All the best Jodie, Wollongong, Australia 🇦🇺
I work in Lodi. It’s interesting to hear about the town. Thank you ☕️
You’re welcome 😊 glad you liked a local story!
The fear...adrenaline alone kept him alive long enough to reach help. Truly tragic. (Is Kettleman City associated with that family? It's one of my stopping off points on the way to/from Tahoe!)
Yes it’s the same family. You must have not watched all the way to the end. There’s also a street in Lodi named after the Kettlemans.
@@jbenziggy Yep, watched all the way, but didn't see anything about the naming of the town on my route.
Great story! I love the local history stories.
Thank you, Joanne! Much appreciated!
Great research!!!
So very interesting. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much!
I am relatively sure that Woodbridge College is gone! Thanks for the insightful comments ... I didn't know about the Frieberger family. Interesting!
I love how you can go into any Cemetary and find the most interesting stories!
Thanks! Usually I have to research a bit before I go so that way I don’t miss interesting folks buried in a cemetery. I always appreciate your kindness and support! Missed you guys in church last Sunday!
@@jbenziggy Brad is still recovering from surgery. Hope to be back in church soon! Merry Christmas to you and Sarah
Very interesting video as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
Really enjoyed this sad bit of history Thankyou Jeff yet agian
Good video. God bless
Thanks, you too!
That’s sad to hear but, no, I do not recognize the name.
Great story of human mental problems that are not truly identified till a tragedy exposes it.
Very interesting video
