"None of that will change". When reporters were reporters. "And now you know the rest of the story." Always loved him. Life is like, a box of chocolates!
I would be scared to be locked inside after evening hours !!!! Great video as usual. I was struck by the simplicity of Mr. Cronkite's grave. What an inspiring and authentic human being.
I was 4 when President Kennedy was assasinated...but I remember every detail of that moment in my house that continued for the next few days. I knew it was bad and very sad as my mother was crying. Seeing this man on TV take off his glasses with such emotion to share with the world what had happened. He was family to everyone. Also, remember with excitement and anticipation the landing on the moon. He just had this way about him. Never been anyone else like him ! He was something special. Thank you for another great history lesson and walk down memory lane. Happy Sunday Jeff and Sarah.
I'm older than you but I was in elementary school and out class was silent for the first time ever. Mom was crying when I got home and that was very rare. Terrible time.
Great video. Like you I grew up with Walter Cronkite reporting the day's news. He kept it straight and gave you the facts, letting you make up your own mind about the events of the day. How refreshing, compared to today, where media packages the news according to their particular political viewpoint. The stories behind Russell Stover and his involvement with the Eskimo Pie was unknown to me. Eskimo Pie was one of my favorites as a kid. Funny, I would have expected Walter Cronkite's final resting place to be more like Stover's! Thank you for all the research and hard work you put into these videos.
Welcome to Kansas City. So happy to see your video from my hometown. I have several family members buried at Mount Mariah.... Great video... Thank You!
Walter Cronkite was on every night in our household growing up! His voice and the way he spoke the news just had a soothing effect on me. He was the best in my book. I was six when JFK was assassinated. I don’t remember the day of the shooting. Do remember coming home from church the Sunday after with my mom. My dad was watching the coverage on TV. My father never missed church but he did that day. My mom always loved Russell Stover chocolates. I bought her boxes over the years for many birthdays and Christmas gifts. She could’ve had more expensive chocolates but she preferred Russell Stover. I hope you and Sarah had a wonderful trip to visit your family!
He was the Nation’s gentleman and it was big news handing the baton over to Rather. I met Betsy a couple of times and she was unpretentious and a dignified, matronly like woman. Simple markers in the Heartland.
Many people are starting to compare older architecture to modern. That mausoleum would be a great example. No character to modern buildings. Your camera lighted all the rooms so I didn't get the creepies, temperature and smell may have added to your experience. Thanks for another great video.
Hello Jeff, Thanks for sharing the resting places of Walter Cronkite and Russell Stover and their stories. May they Rest 🙏 Peace. As alway's have a wonderful sunday!
So different now Walter was there and we could trust what he said. He was like a member of the family. Todays media too polarized too untrustworthy . Wish we could go back in time . Jeff this must have been a thrill for you with you being a newsman too. And thats the way it is another Great Vlog from History Hunters.
I was 8 years old when Kennedy was shot and sitting in my 3rd grade class in Castro Valley CA when the principal of the school came in to inform the teacher what had happened with tear's in their eye's they told us what had happened. It seemed that day that America had died. What a sad time. Thanks for sharing the video as always I enjoyed it.
Wow, so you got to meet Clara? I just bought her book and am reading it! They may have been rich later in life but wow, did they ever sacrifice and take risks!
I remember the moon landing and Walter’s coverage of it. I went outside that night and stared at the moon, so far away yet so close now. It was a beautiful summer night. Thank you Walter for sharing that event with me.
Thank you Jeff. Didn’t expect such a simple marker, unadorned. But why in this day and age would anyone be interested in someone who gave us the straight story. I’m 68 and remember his space reporting. A true professional (much like yourself). Always looking forward to your next story.
Walter Cronkites family had a cabin in Northern Wisconsin near my home. It was called the wismo club. All the family's were rich family's from Missouri.
Man, you sparked childhood memories of riding bikes through the cemetery and exploring the mausoleum.😊 That place was a childhood curiosity and I remember the television commercials and the cemetery.
I grew up in Roeland Park, KS, I still to this day remember the Stover mansion in Mission Hills. While Mrs. Stover was alive and living in the mansion she had red awnings over all of the windows with her husband’s stylized initials on all of the awnings. When Mrs. Stover died they had an estate sale at the mansion, my mother and a friend of hers took me to the auction at the mansion. I’m sure my mother still has some trinkets that she bought there.
Walter Cronkite was a fixture on our living room television when I was growing up in the 70's. He was a legend. And who doesn't love a box of Russell Stover chocolates? Thanks for your video, Jeff! I hope you and Sarah are having a fun summer!
Another fascinating video. The outside of the mosuleum is one of the coolest I've ever seen. And I must agree, even on video, that is one of the creepiest I've see as well. And being the only person in there makes it even more creepy. Thanks for showing us this one.
In doing the genealogy of the family we found Walter Cronkite was indeed a distant relative of mine. When I worked at a TV station in the 70s I often thought about that. Great video.
Jeff, what an excellent, as always, video this is. That was an awesome tribute to Walter Cronkite. I was a child when Pres. Kennedy was assassinated. I recall every, single detail, as if it was yesterday. This is the first time I have seen the tape of an "emotional" Walter Cronkite since I saw it back then. I remember it like it just happened, including the removal of the glasses, and the hard swallowing. WOW Unfortunately, I *know the Stovers all too well.😋 They made wise business decisions, and their candy is still around. There is something about mausoleums. I know what you mean, Jeff. That one is obviously very well kept up though. Thank you for sharing this with us. 🙏🏻❤️🩹💐
I can't remember yesterday well, but I sure do remember every detail bout Nov 22 1963. The Principal at my school came into our class room and took our teacher aside and told her the news, she started to cry, we had no idea what had happened til she came back in the classroom and told us.
@@sandraponce9895 EXACTLY, Sandra... It's etched in our memories, as clearly as if it just happened. I was just explaining that to my daughter. It really is amazing.💔
Another great video. I will have to go visit Walter as I live only a few minutes away. Walter’s family was from St. Joseph, MO which is not too far from Kansas City. Walter lived in Kansas City, was married there, and I believe worked for The Kansas City Star. He came back occasionally to the area to visit. I remember him coming back to open the newly restored Folly Theater as well as helping launch the campaign to restore the once dilapidated Union Station, now a gem of Kansas City where the NFL Draft was just held. His cousin, Kay Barnes went on to become two term mayor of Kansas City, the first woman to hold the office. Once again, quite an enjoyable video. I hope you enjoyed or are enjoying your time in Kansas City. Hopefully you will get a chance to visit Union Station and the National World War Museum located up the hill from the station.
Impeccable research, as always--and you possess such a eclectic collection of historic memorabilia! On-the-money Cronkite impersonation, too! We used to do impressions of his newscasting style when we were kids! :D
Before he anchored CBS News he had a show in the 50's called "You Are There". Actors would dress up as various famous people each week and Walter would interview them. Famous naval heroes, Generals,. inventors, industrious pioneers like Andrew Carnegie, presidents, etc. It was on CBS on Sundays and always I watched it. I remember he interviewed Betsy Ross. CBS has fallen a long way down since the days of Edward R Murrow, Douglas Edwards and Walter Cronkite. Well done Jeff.😀
Lovely presentation, very decent people. I saw Cronkite in person once. He was a really large person, very well built, well proportioned. About 6’5” like a football player. A true old school gentleman.
Excellent, I always learn so much from History Hunters!! Your videos are put together so well, very professional and informative, interesting. Thank you . Also I really like your voice!
Great job really took me down memory road like reliving the past wonderful information and that's the way it was. Thank you your number one fan Lou Martell
His mom is buried here in Leavenworth Kansas. He paid to have flowers placed there often. She lived to be 101! I like to think she was as brilliant and calm as Walter was and so proud of her son. She passed in 1993 and lies in a very old part of the Mt Muncie Cemetery. That’s how I stumbled upon her, learning about those buried around her over 100 years before she was born. Her grave marker is flat and small, humble…I read so much into that too as to perhaps how simple and sweet a person may have been. Walter comes from a long line of men who made a difference in America. His dad and grandfather were doctors, and great grandfather was a farmer who was a civil war veteran. Thank you again for another great KC area historical adventure. mt Moriah is a really amazing cemetery. I’m so glad you were able to visit there.
Walter Cronkite WAS the news when I was growing up in the 1960's. Between Cronkite and Huntley - Brinkley was a toss-up, but my parents always went with " The most trusted man in America".
You always do such fantastic videos, this was great, really enjoyed it. I remember coming home from school crying and then watching Cronkite announce the death of Kennedy.
I was only two years old when the JFK assassination occurred so I don’t remember it, but I choke up every time I see Cronkite delivering the horrible news to the American people. You could just feel the lump in his throat to acknowledge that such a popular president had been murdered. That’s just a horrible thing to happen to our leader no matter who he is.
My neighbor ran across the street to tell me to turn on my TV that President Kennedy had just been shot. We listened to Walter Cronkite and saw his grief and cired after he said our President had died. We broke down as well. Never had i seen a news person show any emotion before. It is a memory I have carried ever since that awful day. Thank you for this episode.
I was only two years old when it happened, so I have no memory, but I have heard stories about my mother, who was in her 20s, breaking down and crying, and my grandmother admonish her to stop crying. My mother, then explained to her that she cried like a baby when Franklin Roosevelt died. I just think my grandmother was upset to see her daughter upset and crying. No matter who your president is it’s a horrible thing to experience an assassination.
Excellent historic reminders surrounding Walter Cronkite's life time. Enjoyed the Bible verse too. Have you visited Wyatt Earp's grave at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park Colma, San Mateo County, California?
I liked Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings. You’re right when you say local news has become national news anymore. The three network morning shows always talk about New York City news like it’s national news.
Great running commentary and video additions. It did bring back memories and so dramatically reminded of how much news presentation has changed - FOR THE WORSE!! Good impersonation!
@@jbenziggy I guess a lot of terrible things were going on in the US and world; but, we simply didn’t know about it. Recent history shows us that was actually better for our mental health.
This was wonderful! I so admired Mr. Cronkite very much and as for the Stover's, what a nice addition that was. My absolute favorite chocolate. Thank you so much❤
Pretty interesting about the Stovers, I never knew 100% of it all! You could hardly go wrong with chocolate back in the day especially with ice cream! What a great impression of Walter Jeff!
Recently found your channel and subbed. We live down the road from you folks in Atwater. Have you ever visited Wyatt Earp’s grave in Colma? We found it several years ago. We appreciate the research you do. Thanks for the history lessons!👍
Hi Jeff, such a sweet visit at Walters grave site. Yes I do remember him every night my mother watched him she liked his news reports. This is well done. Thank you for the time and effort. See you again on the next visit. As always I enjoy your videos. God bless.💯❤️👍🇺🇲🙋
Jeff, I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2006 at the Henry Ford Museum where I worked at the time. Small world he was a friend of an acquaintance of mine. Walter Cronkite probably would have been buried in Kansas City or Kansas even if he had not married his wife. His mother is buried in Mount Muncie cemetery in Lansing, Kansas. If you ever go to Lansing Kansas, the In Cold Blood Killers are there. Walter Cronkite's Mother had family in Leavenworth, Kansas. They owned a store there which were Walter Cronkite's Grandparents. His Father's family was from St. Joseph, MO. Really enjoyed your show today, thanks for sharing 👍 😀 😊.
This was one of my favorites you have done so far Jeff. A man well deserved, of any news caster or reporter for notoriety. Thank you for sharing this. ❤
I grew up on Walter Cronkite and made sure to watch his last broadcast in 1981...I was 24 yrs old. Sometimes, my dad would watch Huntley & Brinkley but 99% of the time, we watched Mr. Cronkite, It is so sad what the evening news has evolved into nowadays. i feel like they are political advocates instead of reporting national and world news. I miss those days when we felt we could trust the news. Sure, CBS had a more conservative leaning and NBC leaned a more Democrat - inspired newscast but it was a healthy rivalry....not the mess it is in today's world. Russell Stover was my mother's favorite candy. And although their factory closed here in Middle Tennessee a few years ago, we still have factory stores off the interstates across the State where you can buy seconds or slightly expired for a lot less than retail price. We still stop every time we see one! Thank you for a great video! Didn't know that Russell Stover helped develop Eskimo Pies!
Thanks for sharing your experiences watching these television news icons. I think Russell Stover was more of a Midwest phenomenon so you probably had more experience with it. Out in California we had See’s candy as well as Hershey chocolate as it was manufacturing chocolate bars in my hometown of Oakdale, California, so Hershey was big and our family. I have never seen a Russell Stover store, but I do see it on the shelves of the drugstore.
@@jbenziggy See's comes to Nashville at Christmas and sets up kiosks in our snazziest mall 😊 It is delicious candies too! What doesn;t sell on your drugstore shelves by the expiration date is sent back to the RS Factory stores along the interstates. It seems like they will sell it a year or so after its exp date. It is still good! i plan to start donating to your channel as these types of channels are so important to American history. Thank you for doing this!
Great tribute to Walter Cronkite. He was a fav of mine. RIP and I hope more people acknowledge him and leave flowers. Sad his grandson committed suicide. RIP to him as well. I've had Russell Stover candy but not in ages.
Great video Sir ! I really enjoyed watching a part of my past that I hadn't thought of for some time .. Congrats on picking up that letter , you'll never lose money on that . Thanks again Jeff
Thank you for the research and great production quality you put into this. I, like you, grew up watching Cronkite as a kid, otherwise known as "the remote control!" I've called KC home for close to 30 years and didn't realize he was buried here. Walt retired to his yacht and would sail the Intercoastal waterway along the eastern seaboard. Periodically, he would moor up at the Fairfield Harbor marina in New Bern, NC where I grew up. Thanks again Jeff for the great content!
Thank you for sharing! I look forward to seeing your videos every week. I need to send you an email and show you a few pieces of history about southwest Kansas.
Maybe one day! Thanks for the compliment! Sarah and I were in Concord, Calif., this past week and a fan reached out to shake my hand and say that she knew me but I didn't know her! It was quite unexpected and a great surprise!
Jeff You never cease to amaze me with your research on every story. Really enjoyed the Cronkite segment and then the Russell Stover segment. And you are right, CREEPY inside there LOL Thank you for your dedication and hard work. ( and can't forget about Sarah )
So sad what has become of so called "journalism". Thanks for the memories of Walter.
Jeff, thank you for reminding us of what a great man Mr Cronkite was. He was a first-class reporter. RIP MR Cronkite 🙏.

Very cool history... Forgotten by many, discovered by your video. Excellent work. Thank you for sharing. Take care Jeff. 🇺🇲
A legendary broadcaster, even for those of us in the UK.
We had Richard Dimbleby, the USA had Walter Cronkite. Two titans of news broadcasting whose like I doubt we shall see again.
Great video. I remember watching Walter Cronkite. I enjoyed the Russell and Clara Stover story.
Pretty interesting about the Stovers, I never knew 100% of it all! You could hardly go wrong with chocolate back in the day especially with ice cream! What a great impression of Walter Jeff!
Thanks for the nice feedback. I wasn't too impressed with seeing my imitation on screen but I'm glad you enjoyed my rendition! LOL
Thanks for the history on walter.. and the chocolate manufacturing family.
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Recently found your channel and subbed.
We live down the road from you folks in Atwater.
Have you ever visited Wyatt Earp’s grave in Colma?
We found it several years ago.
We appreciate the research you do. Thanks for the history lessons!👍
Thanks for the sub! I have yet to visit the Earp grave in Colma but check out the video I did on the home he died in!
Thankyou for another interesting video. The mausoleum looked like an incredible building. Nancy
I am employed by Tempe ,Az home of ASU & the Cronkite school. Hopefully they are continuing the legacy of this genuine, great man. nice video, thx
Thanks for sharing!
You amaze me with your research and attention to detail Jeff! Thanks for sharing about Walter & Russell. Very interesting, I didn't want it to end!
My pleasure! Nice hearing from you again !
Very interesting as always. I always loved Walter Cronkite's voice and trusted reporting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
A fun and fascinating HH vid! Thnx so much for my weekly "HH fix" Jeff! ~ Chris
Glad you enjoyed it, Chris! We love your addiction!
Cronkite,
It is so sad what the evening news has evolved into nowadays. i feel like they are political advocates instead of reporting national and world news.
Yet ANOTHER fantastic presentation!!! Wonderful stuff!
Thank you! Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it! I treasure that Eisenhower letter! Thanks!
I love the story of the Stover's. The best candy ever.
This is the best episode you have ever done. Well researched and presented. Thank you!
Yay, thank you!
Very nice Jeff, Sarah as allways your videos are of class integrity of honesty some day we should meet. Have a great day.
Maybe one day! Thanks for the compliment! Sarah and I were in Concord, Calif., this past week and a fan reached out to shake my hand and say that she knew me but I didn't know her! It was quite unexpected and a great surprise!
You do a great impression of him . Thank you have a great week
Ha ha! Thanks but I think it was terrible. 🤣
I love history and really enjoyed this episode as well many others. Thanks for sharing ☺
I was born in ‘69 but I remember watching him! Back in the ‘70s, we only had the 6 pm & 11 pm
Outstanding piece of work. Thank you for the share.
Jeff You never cease to amaze me with your research on every story. Really enjoyed the Cronkite segment and then the Russell Stover segment. And you are right, CREEPY inside there LOL Thank you for your dedication and hard work. ( and can't forget about Sarah )

It's me again! Walter Conkite was born in that town where Jesse James passed away. We have the Walter Conkite Memorial Hwy here in good ol' St Joseph.
