It's not just the involuntary movements that are creates such distress, but the inward terror and fright that your body feels makes it almost impossible to live.

I had extreme akathisia from aripiprazole and had to fight so so hard to stop myself from jumping out my 16th floor apartment several times, had to sit on the floor to stop my involuntary movement wanting to jump, eventually the levels of agitation, anxiety, OCD, and intrusive thoughts are so intense you consider jumping to end it. Was prescribed after psychotic manic episode and just thought my brain had broken and I had schizophrenia. Eventually had to be emergency sedated after crying out for help at the E.R then sent me home after 6 hours sleep. The most traumatic and dangerous experience, more so then full psychotic episode. It certainly is the definition of losing your mind. The level of involuntary movements is akin to a feeling of being possessed or being controlled like a puppet. Bad vibes man!!!

I'd describe it as the MOST hideous side effect of any medication I've ever taken.

Akathisia is a horrible condition. The person is no longer in control of his body. No amount of movement is going to make it stop. It’s like being put in an oubliette!

That is a very grim but accurate comparison you make!

It is not a difficult one. akathisia is torture unrelenting non-stopping torture. you feel physically and emotionall, you can't stop, you can't sleep there's no reprise. at least with depression you can fall asleep and fall into the abyss. With akathisia you do not get that relief, there is no numbing, No space to dissociate, it's all consuming agony, so no it is not difficult it's not comparable.
With depression there are moments where you get some relief you might not be happy but you'll get some relief either through eating or self-medicating or white knuckling it. akathisia robs you of hope of peace, of your mind, your body. It isolates you while demoting you to "other" . Gives license for people to dismiss you. that level of dehumanization from providers, clinicians, society makes alive yourself a much simpler answer to being perpetually tortured.

I have it severely. Does it eventually go away!? The torture inside the brain is beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I fight daily and hope and pray to God it will eventually subside. I got it from switching to a different generic of duloxetine. Then had no choice but to fast taper off. It’s a living hell for sure. I do get some relief in the evening tho thankfully. I want my life back. Can we heal.

I've experienced this in the past severely, and now I still struggle with it, though it has moderated. I stopped using meds about 15 years ago, and I used to get this so bad. It is a disturbing thought that will not go away and repeats over and again, and you feel like you are going insane. It is scary.
Nowadays, I have mind rituals to block these thoughts if they start because they come out of nowhere, or they are like random associations. I can feel it when one is 'coming down the tube.' I feel the gravity of dread when a disturbing thought is near, and I've had to train my mind with years of practice to block the disturbing thought. One problem is identifying the thought, and by that point, it can be too late because now I've already thought it. So, I'm better at moving past it now, but I deal with it every day.
In the past, my mind would spiral and ruminate more severely, and I would feel really sick. I remember always having this tendency to ruminate, but after I started meds is when it got incredibly scary. I have a hunch they were the cause of it amplifying and getting so much worse. It is a horrible experience, and it is also an invisible inner experience that is alienating because others can't really understand , that can't experience your mind as you live in the moment and you can't really talk about it to others.

It creates a panic attack mimicking feeling in your stomach. I don’t think I’d be able to stay somewhat calm if I didn’t already have a panic disorder and MS.
