    NOTE: This is NOT a thorough review. There were a lot of features not covered, like time lapse options on the Olympus and things like "Live Bulb" mode....both of which I love.

    Final note about video: My explanation about codecs was a little poor. Suffice it to say the ALL-I compression is much better than the IPB compression. ALL-I tends to do better with motion. Both are still compressed formats. And as indicated in the video even the ALL-I option could have a lower bitrate if there isn't too much action in the scene. So this means that your ALL-I videos "could" look poor if not used for the right scene. Also, the XAVC-S is definitely a higher quality codec than the previous one they had in the A6000. I didn't intend to make a false comparison. In fact, there was such an uproar about the A6000 not having that option, that I believe the forums over at Sony, along with other feedback, is why they chose to add it through a firmware update. This is all to say that even the Sony with it's XAVCS codec is still much better than, let's say, a Canon 60D and its compression.

    Great explanation of a wonderful (yet not much publicized) camera! I have it as well and, although you mentioned it in your description, the live composite and live bulb modes are nothing short of pure magic; to see the actual OUTCOME on your monitor AS YOU ARE RECORDING long still exposures - without blowing out brighter static backgrounds - is beyond amazing! What other cameras do that?! Few brands offer such wizardry. My only regret is that I would have preferred to have the pricier M5 Mark II over the M10 Mark II(only because of the additional features of moiré-free high-rez 40MB mode and being waterproof). Thanks so much for posting this! Killer camera the M10 Mark II - I've seen it for just 399USD already! Thanks!

    Thanks for the nice video, man. Choosing a camera is not just about "on paper specification", its all about what you actually need as a photographer (ergonomics, feature, resolution, color, easy to use, etc). Sony, Olympus, Canon, etc are great camera producer. They have their research department that hiring briliant enginer to built their camera. So all we need is choosing the most suitable camera for us among these great brand. For me the em10 mark ii is great, but might not great for others.

      EM10 also. Still love it. Once I learned how to minimize compression and get rid of the factory shutter release delay, it’s tough to beat. Customizing button functions makes it operate the way I do. Face detect and eye priority are great for ultra sharp portraits which is where my money is made most of the time. Programmed Rec button for manual focus so I can then fire off shots with no need to refocus. I feel Sony has a faster more responsive focus system which is the only thing I need on certain occasions. I feel the background blur everyone uses with FF is overdone and a negative I couldn’t deal with. As well as size and expense of switching systems.

      The Post Color Blog The 5-axis IBIS was the big selling point - it works!. Got the extended grip, great for telephoto (45-150mm). I don't do video, so that is totally a non-issue in picking a stills camera. Also like the option to choose from Olympus and Panasonic and Panasonic/Leica lenses... great variety and price points.

    Awesome video man and you make some great points. I had a Sony A6300 last year and hated the feel of it and the EVF, but it did take amazing photos. I then sold the A6300 and went with a Nikon D7200 (fantastic camera). After shooting a DSLR for a year, I began searching for something lighter and compact to take with me daily, for hiking, and for travel. I finally stumbled on a used EM10 mark ii which I purchased and boy was I impressed! The Em10 not only surpassed my expectations in image quality, but it has more features than my sub $1000 Nikon! Focus peaking, live view, live composite, quiet shutter, real time exposure in EVF are features that absolutely blew me away. I've owned the Olympus for about 6 months now and I find myself using it about 75% of time because of the convenience, ergonomics, and damn good image quality. These are fantastic cameras.

    • @PostColorGear
      @PostColorGear  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Luigiz28 I almost got the D7200 myself. Dual card slots, lots of mega pixels...nice camera. But like you said, if I am out and about, I'm not going to want to drag that around. Plus I've grown so used to the EVF as opposed to the OVF now. That's awesome that you jumped around like that. I almost had the same path. I really try to not marry myself to any one camera system.

    • @Luigiz28
      @Luigiz28 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Post Color Blog I agree. If there's a camera that fits my needs better, then I'm going with it no matter the brand. And IMO, the EVF on the Olympus is way better than the Sony's. I hated that EVF. Enjoy your Em10 man!

    I used the sony a7 II, the biggest problem for me where the lenses, so expensive. The poor batterylife was a big drawback for me when doing proffesional shoots.The autofocus in darker situations wasnt great to. Before i used a em 5 markII and it had no trouble at all fofocussing in badly lit situations. The lenses are cheap and performed great. So i sold my Sony and got this little fellow. And boy is it a great little camera. You might think im crazy selling a fullframe camera for this one but at the end of the day performance is not olnley the sise of the sensor. Its the man standing behind the camera. And it perfformes so wel. Deadly accurate autofocus en super fast to. Slap on the 45mm f1.8 and you have a beautifull portrait lens. I absolutly love it

    • @PostColorGear
      @PostColorGear  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. The Sony lenses are way too expensive for what I need them for. Don't get me wrong. Some of those prices are justified. However, I could not justify those prices, again, for what I needed it for. I agree with you on the autofocus too. Absolutely amazing. And I don't blame you about full frame vs micro four thirds. I feel that people put too much stock into that, but thats a video for another day :)

    I own both the E-M10 III and the a6300. I like them both, but even as an entry level camera, the E-M10 III feels more pro in terms of overall functionality. I love the dual knobs of the Oly, something that's also in my Pentax K-70. Easier to control EV and aperture that way via the OVF, vs having to hit the Fn button on the a6300, selecting EV via joystick and then adjusting it.
    (I do realize that the E-M10 II is far more customizable, but I like the upgraded image processor and 4K video capability of the III.)
    ATM not letting go of my a6300, but I'm liking my Oly more and more... might hit a tipping point somewhere later this year after COVID 19 clears or greatly minimizes and then I'll make up my mind as to whether I should sell my entire a6300 stash and buy a E-M5 III + at least a PRO 2.8 12-40 or PRO F4 12-100 zoom. Hmmm...

    I've come around in my thinking about this camera. Initially, I was a bit prejudiced because of the look. I liked the look: they looked really fancy and retro, but they 'only' have 16mp, while Sony's have 24. But I overlooked the great IBIS of these cameras and I also didn't really know what a joy these cameras are to handle. These days I have a Sony for high-quality photo work; a Panasonic for high-quality video work. But when I go out just to have some fun, I take an Olympus.

    I borrowed an Olympus em 10 mk2 with the 14-42 kit lens for a test. I already have a Sony a6000 with a 16-50 kit lens. It is actually very interesting because both cameras are very good. I really loved the in-body stabilization, the main con is the rather poor performance of the Olympus 14-42 kit lens, other than that I am loving this camera. The clip you recorded in the end is amazing, made me appreciate it even more, I presume that you were using either the Panasonic 25mm or 85mm because the quality seems much better than my own tests with the kit lens. I had the E-M10 Mark-II but recently sold it on auction. Afterwards I somewhat regretted it as it is currently one of the best selling cameras in the Japan market currently occupying #4 slot of all cameras from ALL manufacturers. I really enjoyed the ergonomics and the control layout. Well, it is not too regretable in a way, as I sold it in anticipation of the Mark-III to soon release on 9/15. I chose the Mk i over the A6300 lol! I 'upgraded' but realised my mistake before I sold my Olympus which I now still have. I also bought a Fuji later on (for the aperture ring and film camera style controls), the Sony is the only camera that I actually wanted to get rid of (and did!). The lack of touchscreen was a dealbreaker for me doing street photography. Worlds fastest AF is irrelevant if it takes several seconds to select the focus point. I didn't have the stomach to pay another 50% (£500, plus the depreciation on the a6300 of £350 in less than a year) for the a6500 just for a touchscreen.

    • @JodyBruchon

      If you're doing those things, even as a MFT lover I have to say that my APS-C Canon does a better job in photography. MFT photos are good, but especially for landscape photography, the benefits of a larger sensor are undeniable. For video, things get a bit more murky, but for landscape photography you want a larger sensor if you can afford it. If you'd like to stick with the MFT system, spend some good money on a high-quality wide lens like the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8.

    I picked up one of these bad boys used last year, with the intention of it being a second, more portable camera. Yes, I actually upgraded from this camera to a different line (still Olympus) but more expensive BECAUSE I didnt want to upgrade to the Mark 3. They took out a LOT of great things that this camera had and "dumbed it down" in my opinion, which is disappointing. I hear you on the IBIS. It's one of the primary reasons I went Olympus, along with the form factor and dials, and mostly because of the vintage lenses. I highly recommend it! Enjoy it, if you get it!!!

    I sold my A6300 for an Olympus OMD EM 10 III. I compare them a few days. There are very, very few differences in image quality after post-processing (lightroom) and A2 format print. If you look at the 2 photos from a reasonable distance you won't see any difference.

  • @buddah610
    @buddah610 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was going to go with the mark3 in this body but I read a lot of reviews that said there wasn’t much difference two technology wise. They upgraded the processor and I think, added one art filter ( bleach bypass) but took away a lot of features that were very useful . It seems they made the menu more beginner friendly. I’m new to micro 4/3 so the newer body might have been easier to learn but I will see how this goes. I also use Canon T7i but I don’t really care for it! I used the Canon T3i for 6 years and just decided to order a new body because I used my body literally until it started to die! Lol! I thought that the T7 I would be fantastic. It doesn’t come close to the quality of the T3i! I can’t explain it. I will try both of these camera’s and make my decision. I had the Sony a6000 but I think I had a lemon because nothing was ever in focus!! I also have a slight shake so IBIS is important. Thanks!

    • @PostColorGear
      @PostColorGear  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with everyone's assessment. I sold my EM10 mark 2 and bought an EM5 Mark 2 because despite the 4k video, the rest of the specs didn't impress me at all. And in reference to Canon, I had the 60D years ago, but I sold that to go to Sony and havent looked back. The unfortunate thing with Canon is that their upgrades are so minimal that it almost doesn't seem worth it. All that aside, I can still recommend this camera, and the EM5 mark 2 if you wanted to go that route.

    • @buddah610
      @buddah610 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Post Color Blog Thanks! I will give it a try since it’s on the way but if I like the IBIS and other features, I will most likely purchase the EM 5m2. I still have to send the Canon back. I just got it about 3 days ago. I don’t care about a restocking fee, if there is one because I just look at it as a rental fee. I really was in complete shock at the lack of progress! Truly, my T3i has better IQ! My wife, who doesn’t know anything about photography, said she thought the images looked...washed out compared to the T3i. I really want to get into macro and there are a lot of great lens choices for the 4/3rds system. I was thinking of buying the Lumix Gx9 but I keep hearing and reading that it’s more of s street shooter and the dynamic range isn’t great as far as landscapes , wildflowers, nature shots and abstracts. I really feel so confused right now. I just don’t know what to do. But, I will keep trying.

I have the AF permanent off and other things that I don't need off. So the question is what cause that heat? The battery fault, camera or lens mechanism? I don't film and I have the LCD screen most of the time off. Do you have any insight?

      I never experienced that with mine. I would try a new battery and see if the same thing happens. If it does , try with a new lens if you have one. I absolutely deteste what the Sony APS-C mirrorless line-up has become. NEX-7... A6000, A5100, ok... but the A6300 had my hopes up and let down massively and the A6500 didn't really address any of the issues it had. They've put focus on the small mirrorless body instead of small lenses, that is the biggest thing they could've ever done wrong. A compact system is about keeping the lenses compact, but the line-up has been pretty much left for dead for the last good 3 years and the A6x00 series is now the FF system entry level for people who can't yet afford to purchase an A7-series body, but will be getting into eventually. Keeping the body small has resulted in numerous issues, stuff like ports and functionality, but mostly chip infrastructure/internals. Basically the heat dissipation is non-existent and it does get hot and interupts operation. Giving users a mode where they can raise the temperature threshold and making it soo hot that it's unpleasant to hold, calling it 'tripod mode', is not a solution. And although the detail level and noise control is very good, the rolling shutter performance is really really bad. They should've gone for a bigger body style (think: Panasonic GH, Olympus E-M1, Fujifilm X-T, Samsung NX1, ..) and get some good piping in there for heat control and sensor data pulling. Bigger body would lead to better ergonomics and features. Like a vari-angle or atleast tilt up display (with better touchscreen implementation than that found on the A6500). A dedicated slot on the side for dual SD cards (none of that BS where you have to open the battery compartment). Proper audio interface and a megaload of buttons and dials to customize operation. But no... they haven't seen the light quite yet. Color isn't great either, especially left on default settings... will even create color channel clipping, what the heck.
    The E-M10 Mark II? Superb value. Though, so is a Panasonic GX80 or G80. Or Olympus' new E-M10 Mark III I bet. To me it doesn't get much better than the E-M1 Mark II and GH5 camera bodies. They have just about everything you could wish for. MFT is really killing it. And they have the actually have compact lenses to brag with! Which are in continuous development.
    I have an E-M5 for the day and it's really lovely too. Until Sony grows up and get their sh.. together, I'd as well put my money on either Panasonic or Olympus. It's more fun to get a bargain and not be annoyed by quirks whilst shooting and editing. So good on ya!

    • @PostColorGear
      @PostColorGear  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I literally couldn't have said that better myself. I love the features that they are packing into the Sonys. I honestly do. But you're right. The ergonomics on that are odd too, and they definitely could have afforded to have a larger body. I'm glad you mentioned the A6500 too because that has in body stabilization and a touch lcd. But every review I've seen indicates that both of those were poorly implemented, so I dont mind saving the money I did to get the Olympus. I agree with you on the EM1 mark 2 and the GH5. Those are amazing. I may consider those for more professional work (I couldn't justify the prices for just a personal camera right now). Thanks for the comment and thanks for making me feel more confident about my decision haha

    • @shiznuts
      @shiznuts 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha, cheers m8! ;) I backed for the Veydra Mini Primes when they were on Kickstarter. The good thing is they later announced that they were going to roll out user swappable lens mounts for MFT -> E-mount. I immediately ordered a mount conversion kit as rumors about the A6300 grew stronger and stronger. APS-C to me is where the performance is at. MFT does lack a little in dynamic range especially, but also in color 'thickness' if you will (though have come a long way already!) and lowlight high ISO noise performance. With MFT less options to go wide. Less shallow depth of field too. So, APS-C would've been great, yet, nobody makes an excellent APS-C mirrorless system like Olympus & Panasonic do! Started out with the GH2, gotten the E-M1 for stills. Skipped the GH3, went with the GH4. Gotten the BMPCC. Checked out the B.I.S. on the GX80. Went with the baby GH5 that's the G80. Never used the GH4 anymore. :P And today I've ordered the GH5! There was a good deal init for me, and I'm a sucker for good deals and now with the new firmware announced... ooh la la, that does sound amazeballs. xD So... money goes towards Panasonic this round! Sorry Sony & Co, but you'll have to come up with something better than that!

      I would recommend the em10 Mk II Donald! I think the selection of lenses for this camera is better all around than the m50. You can get quality primes and pro level zooms at good prices in the MFT system. I think you would be happy with either, but Canon isn't going to let the M line cut too deeply into their R or EOS lines. As a result, they're going to hold the M system back a little bit.
