This is the greatest live band there ever was. You’re right: as great as this is, you have to see it live from the Fillmore before October 29, 1971, when Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle wreck. You will be amazed. They bought a farm and all lived there with their families and played music all day and developed a telepathic connection that I’ve never seen anywhere else. They never played a song exactly the same way twice. Master musicians. Anything from the Fillmore, ‘Eat a Peach’, “One Way Out”, “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”, “Dreams”, “Statesboro Blues”, “Blue Sky “, “”Les Brers in A minor”, “Melissa”, “Jessica”, or Duane’s “Little Martha”, but first “Whipping Post” from the Fillmore East, the best 20 minutes you may ever spend. Peace.
You are SPOT ON !!! I would also tell others, the correct order from which to pick their songs is At Fillmore east, Eat A Peach and then Brothers and Sisters, so you go from live to half and half and then to all studio.
Van, you have just witnessed greatness with this Allman Brothers classic! Everyone brought their A game, and then some on this masterpiece. Great reaction, and thanks for doing this one for both the older generations who already love it, and the new generations who will come to appreciate it. Well done!
To this day I say Whipping post is way better than Freebird or Stairway to heaven (still great songs!) But Whipping Post live from the Fillmore just burns everything!
Exactly. There is no way a guy his age should have that special tone, much less that "passion and conviction". To sing like that, you're supposed to have suffered 30+ years of bitches ripping your heart out. It's not fair! But we get to enjoy this amazing talent
It took you this long to do Whipping Post? "The drums... I gotta see this live." Yes, you do. (Filmore East 1971 is epic). Hint: There are TWO drummers.
After growing up in that time of all this fantastic music, we kind of take it for granted. It’s awesome to see the reactions from the younger generations to experience it. The concerts then were unbelievable.
Welcome to the world of Whiteboy soul😎. Chris Stapleton was asked who his biggest vocal influences are. He mentioned only 2 names…..Gregg Allman and the Queen, Aretha Franklin
Sometimes I listen to a song like this one that I’ve heard most of my life on the radio, but it hits me because it expresses the way I feel and this time it brought a tear to my eye.
They recorded an album called Live at Filmore East, it features this song among others. There is a live video. Probably the best live concert album ever. You should listen to the whole thing.
You've only scratched the ABB surface. Great band! One Way Out Melissa Statesboro Blues Come And Go Blues I'm No Angel Jessica Blue Sky In Memory of Elizabeth Reed Dreams Ramblin Man
My favorite American Blues/Rock band. Duane, Greg and Dickie are GOATS and any band with two drum kits is going to deliver...the Allman Brothers always did!
Isn't it amazing what two drummers can do?!?!? Man, feel like one of the luckiest female musicians alive to have had the greatest honor of performing with Gregg Allman in Little five points Georgia.
Van, so glad you listened to the Allman Brothers again. Duane Allman is my favorite guitarist (and he only lived until age 24, but still accomplished so much). Gregg Allman, his brother, may be the greatest blues singer. Dickey Betts is the other guitar player and wrote some great songs (also a great guitar player). I recommend you react to these Allman Brothers songs 1) One Way Out 2) Blue Sky 3) Statesboro Blues and 4) Black Hearted Woman.
Duane played with some greats at Muscle Shoals. Clapton admitted to being intimidated by him. Duane had to have been about 20 years old at the time. Imagine that.
Gregg Allman, the lead singer, organ player and writer of this song, was 19 when they recorded this song. He sounds like he is 39, such world savvy at such a young age...
People wonder how a 21-22 year old white as white boy could belt out those lyrics with the soul of an old, beaten-down man. That was the late, great Gregg Allman, laid these vocal down when he was close to 20 years old, simply amazing.
We've all been there,, brother. And this is the greatness of the music: it allows us to realize our common experiences as people, regardless of color or national origin. Greg Allman also had a great singles career.
Love the Allman Brothers. This was the studio version. Most fans will tell you that the one from Live at the Filmore East is the best, about 12 minutes long, with 2 guitar solos by 2 different artists, and there are 2 drummers on stage. I know you know who Chris Stapleton is, he did a live version of this song with Gregg Allman in the audience, well worth checking out.
Yeah I’m 48yo..playing guitar since I was 14..playing Metal…when I was 20yo..My father in law gave me this album…Changed my life…I said fuck metal! I wanna play like that!!!!
Live at Fillmore East, considered one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. Duane Allman is in the top ten best guitarist of all time. Then you put Duane and Dickey Betts together and it’s pure magic. (I’ve only ever seen one other dual team as good as they were and that was Don Felder and Joe Walsh.). You can easily tell them apart by Duane’s gritty, raw slide playing and Dickeys clean, crisp notes. You’re also right about Greg Allman’s vocals. Totally recognizable. Plus he played the keyboard, harmonica and even sometimes the guitar. They had two drummers, Jai Johansson and Butch Trucks. The were perfection and then the bassist was Barry Oakley who was as good a bassist I’ve ever seen. Anyway, I don’t know what Lathe D. below is talking about with them being telepathic but hey, 😂
The thing about the Allman Brothers, and other southern rock, is that they were raised in soul! When exposed at a young age, one can tell it's in his blood man. I played their Eat A Peach album throughout my high school days. Duane Allman and Eric Clapton recorded together, Derrick and The Dominos.
The Allman Brithers never really identified themselves as “southern” rock. Yes they are from the south but they defined themselves as blues/rock/jazz fusion jam band. They are not in the same vain as Skynard and the lot
50 years ago, I had this in my hootch in Vietnam. I've loved them and continue to listen to them now. Their Live at the Fillmore East is the best live album of all time. Whipping Post is on that, too.
There are so many great soulful singers (I'd always put Ray Charles as number one) but Gregg Allman puts himself in the conversation amongst the all time greats. Amazing that he was so young at the time and that he sang on so many incredible songs... check out "Not My Cross To Bear" as one of his best...
Gregg's voice sounded just like this when he singing WHIPPING POST at 19 or 20 years old. That deep raspy singing voice... he had that as a teenager. On the Live at the Fillmore East album... WHIPPING POST goes on for 23 minutes. The Allman Brothers catalog is a DEEP DIVE. *Hands you scuba gear* Good luck.
So many more great Allman Bros. May I suggest "In Memory of Elisabeth Reed" (Live from Fillmore East) Incredible Band.... I'm 72 and when this came on the radio, i heard the term "whipping post" and automatically thought it was a Civil Rights song. Nope just another Evil Women song of the early 70s. Dang I can relate, sadly. But I have a wonderful son now he's almost 40. Absolutely worth the hurt his mom brought to me.....
Greatness‼️This Epic Southern Rock band from Daytona Beach Florida🌴🌴🌴 were amazing live. Those were the days of 3 hour concerts, leaving in a sweat and a big smile. Real Music.
Been listening to the Allmans since their first album came out over 50 years ago. Saw them at least twice with Duane; one of those may have been the Live at Ludlow Garage set, not long before the Live at the Fillmore East sessions. Greg can't have been older than 22 when he sang this. Does my heart good to see how much they're still appreciated.
My favorite is " Soulshine" They were worth more than the money you paid to see them...i Loved their outdoor concerts. Every time they were anywhere close to Tennessee I was there even if I had to hitchhike to get there. Mmm mmm. The best Southern Rock band ever. I love Lynyrd Skynyrd and Steve Miller Band and all the rest but Allman Brothers were in a league of their own.
Greg Allman was 24 I think when he wrote Whipping Post. They were basically kids still when they released their first album in 1969 that this song is featured on.
The Allmans were raised 30 minutes away from me in Macon Georgia.. 2 of the members also died near the same spot on motorcycles .. also I was able to attend Gregg Allmans funeral .
Gregg's voice was the most soulful of anybody, I feel like I'm tied down to the whipping post 😄 Keep rocking in the south brothers and sisters ✌️🤘 Brother Gary. ⚡⚡
I think you nailed it. It's hard to walk away from anything you're addicted to. Nobody can tell that story like Gregg Allman. At this point in his life, he had NOT been "doing it for so many years." Gregg was just 20 years old when he wrote, and here recorded Whipping Post, at the Fillmore East. That voice could have belonged to a 50 year old man, not a 20
that band had enough of everything you need to be a world class band in any genre but they decided to create their own anyway! Bless those boys (all of them over the years different combinations and all ) i have enjoyed them all i'm thankful for those who keep it alive TTB, Marcus King, Doyle Bramhall and the rest who know who they are. 8). Happy New Years everyone i hope 2022 kicks 2021's ass! Cheers
Van, my Man - you are in for a treat. "I wonder is there somewhere they do this live?" Live at the Fillmore East - about 23 minutes of this. Magnificent.
That’s the late Berry Oakley starting soft, rolling in on those amazing bass riffs, followed by Duane on guitar and then Dickie on the two middle strings of his guitar, then come Butch and Jamoe on drums at almost the same time as Greg in keys. But Berry starts the song on bass.
Gregg Allman wrote this song and first recorded 1969. Its a bad ass song. I played the hell out of it when I got the Live at the Fillmore East Album in the 80s or 90s.
We used to put this in the 8-track and drive around in the at night in the middle of nowhere with the windows down toking on whatnots. And if it was chilly, turn the heater on at the same time. A whirlwind of music and good times.
𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 this reaction, Van. Jeez, you 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 "got it." 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐊 𝐘𝐎𝐔. ♡ P. S. If you're curious, "Midnight Rider," Blue Sky," "RAMBLIN' MAN" (←hint, hint), and "Melissa" might please your ears, too. ♡
Gregg had a rough life. First his father died then at 8 years old he was shipped off to military school, basic training for an 8 year old. Castle Heights Military Academy was in my hometown and I use to watch them drill. It was a tough life. Then his brother died and Gregg said he died that day to from an OD but was brought back. Then Barry Oakley died the bass player and friend. This is why he could sing the blues.
The Allman Brothers were an incredible band; two drummers, two lead guitarists. Gotta see their live version of this song at the Fillmore East, 1971, right before guitarist Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident.
Hey Van. about every week I check reaction videos to see who’s done any reactions on the Allman Brothers Band. One of the things most people do is when they do reactions on the original band, most times they go to the studio albums. You asked if whipping Post was done live, well it was done live on the third album which was a live album, a double album at the Fillmore East in NY. The studio album is roughly 10 minutes long but the live version is 23 minutes long. Many people automatically think that it’s just extended jams filling up the difference in time but it’s not. It’s more emotional structures that perfectly fit into the feeling of the song. Personally the studio version is great but the live version is off the chart and I know you’ll love it. By the way, if you notice through the comments, most people if not all are saying go to the live album to hear the version of this song. They know what they’re talking about. You may want to head to the garage first, take a few hits, get comfy, buckle up and be prepared for blast off. 😮
This is the greatest live band there ever was. You’re right: as great as this is, you have to see it live from the Fillmore before October 29, 1971, when Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle wreck. You will be amazed. @@qhl5579 And a LOT of us, agree to disagree with you. However, I think we can ALL agree, that they were one GREAT band, live or otherwise 👍😊🙌😎.
@@StevesFunhouse That I can agree 👍

Van, you have just witnessed greatness with this Allman Brothers classic! Everyone brought their A game, and then some on this masterpiece. Great reaction, and thanks for doing this one for both the older generations who already love it, and the new generations who will come to appreciate it. Well done!
The Grateful Dead gets a lot of credit as a "jam band" and I saw them over a hundred times, but The Allman Brothers ... untouchable in their day.
I agree. I've been to both concerts where each band just jammed for an hour or two, the Allman Brothers were hypnotic, the Dead, not so much.
They where in their early 20s Greg's voice is so soulful and Duane and Dicky on guitar. They also had 2 drummers.
"One Way Out" live version 1971 Filmore East. Amazing. So is the live version of Whippin Post. Two lead guitars and two drummers. Incredible.
My favorite
Just buy the full album. Get a glass of bourbon, turn down the lights and enjoy
To this day I say Whipping post is way better than Freebird or Stairway to heaven (still great songs!) But Whipping Post live from the Fillmore just burns everything!
React to that whole Filmore LP. Legend.
@@jrshelton3398 Seriously! He can't go wrong with anything on it.
Greg Allman was only in his very early 20s when he sang this. Hard to believe this much emotion could come from someone so young.
Greg was 21 when he sang this. 21. He is singing with more passion and conviction than most soul artist can muster in their 50s.
Unbelievable that he was such a very young man
Gregg was 23, Duane was 24….18 months apart 🖤
Exactly. There is no way a guy his age should have that special tone, much less that "passion and conviction". To sing like that, you're supposed to have suffered 30+ years of bitches ripping your heart out. It's not fair! But we get to enjoy this amazing talent
As someone who moved overseas to the states and have been sort of spectator ever since. This to me is the greatest American rock song.
It took you this long to do Whipping Post? "The drums... I gotta see this live." Yes, you do. (Filmore East 1971 is epic). Hint: There are TWO drummers.
One of the greatest southern rock songs of all time
I love seeing younger folks discover this band. Are you beginning to understand why we boomers are so critical of today's music?
I can't tell you how satisfying and encouraging it is to see others' reaction to art that moved me too, years ago.
Blessings.
They have what is possibly the best live album ever made at the Filmore East 1971.
After growing up in that time of all this fantastic music, we kind of take it for granted. It’s awesome to see the reactions from the younger generations to experience it. The concerts then were unbelievable.
You’re just scratching the surface with this band, I’ve seen them live more times than I can count and they never let us down.
"It's Not My Cross To Bear" is a killer song by these guys.
Preach!
Your reactions crack me up. Whipping Post takes up a whole side on the vinyl album At Fillmore East. They stretched whipping post in concert
Welcome to the world of Whiteboy soul😎. Chris Stapleton was asked who his biggest vocal influences are. He mentioned only 2 names…..Gregg Allman and the Queen, Aretha Franklin

"It's not my cross to bear" is one of their best and delivers truly sweet southern blues.
He wrote it from a dream he had. Greg Allman is the lead singer. His brother Duane is the lead guitarist.
They recorded an album called Live at Filmore East, it features this song among others. There is a live video. Probably the best live concert album ever.
You should listen to the whole thing.
You are correct. It is the greatest live album ever.
My sister was named after the song called Sweet Melissa by the Allman Bros.
...Mom and Dad were hippies.
Allman Brothers SOULSHINE. One of my favorite songs
Amazing that a 21 year old could sing like this
Ya, they blew our socks off back in the 70’s
And still do today 😎
Southern Blues Rock at it’s finest.
You have to listen to the Allman Brother's live. Always seek out whichever song in its live format.
"Midnight Rider" . Can't hate it!
One of the first southern rock bands, and one of the original jam bands. There's just so much right here.....
you are swimming in the deepend bro!! I drove to school in my GTO cranking this and Marvin Gaye..... awesome stuff

Color don't know music family, straight banger 💪🍸
Let me rephrase that, music don't know color family, it should have been my wedding song back in 1988.
It never occurred to me he may be saying I CAN’T leave. I’ve heard this song a million times. Interesting. Thank you.

Glad you liked, I think you said it all.
That was the late berry Oakley on bass, just before the guitars come in, opening up the song with that nice rolling bass line.
