Superior is the word that comes to mind when I hear your reviews, man. And I might add, that you are damn articulate and a pleasure to hear speak about your craft. Good job. Your powered bookshelf reviews (other review, I know) especially interest me because I recently bought a Klipsch pair (R15-PM) with a powered sub (R-10SW) and am loving them. I've longed to hear a credible reviewer such as yourself share any opinions about Klipsch, or especially these speakers or similar from their line. Idk if you've review any, but would love to get the link. Keep up the great work. :) Thanks
Beautiful looking speakers that add to SVS's reputation of making solid products. That gloss looks so nice! I continue liking your leaderboard rankings and you seem very fair when assessing the placement of a new product.
@@joentell hello, I was planning on buying these speakers but would they do well with a Sony str dh90 receiver (5.2 145 Wx5)? If not I was thinking on getting the Sony ss cs5 3 way speaker if the svs does not work.
Great review Joe N Tell. I am VERY impressed with SVS. I’m saving up for a set of Prime Bookshelves to join my Prime Center & Prime Elevation. Just the Center & Elevations have blown me away watching my 4K movies. I can’t wait to see what Bookshelves bring to the table
I have these and the KEF Q350’s and it comes down really to personal preference. The Kefs are warm sounding, very refined and balanced with a bit more clarity. The primes are louder with a lot more energy still maintaining good clarity even at high volume. I’ve demoed these a lot to friends and it’s 50/50 on which speaker they like.
Which do you think have the best mids? I had Q150s and q350s, but never owned any SVS speakers. I don’t need a lot of low end…. Mostly like reasonable high and good mids, due to how my hear has declined over the years.
I use these as surrounds and they do a fantastic job with home theatre. I also have a pair in a 2-channel music listening room. Also, a great choice! No complaints. Very happy. I would highly recommend.
Thanks for the review. I own the Ultra Bookshelf Speakers along with a SB1000 Sub for my small room (11x12) and I am very happy with this purchase. They were auditioned vs. the LS50s and it wasn’t close- I kept the SVSs and haven’t looked back.
@@joentell No sub when testing- probably why I chose the SVSs- the larger woofer certainly helped it sound much fuller. The soundstage, to my ears was equal and SVSs aren't as bright. In the end we all have tastes and needs. I'm using a MiniDSP DDRC-24 (Dirac) with 4 different and corrected curves. Love it! My issue is if my $3.5k set up sounds this good, what would a $10k setup sound like?
@@joentell Much, much easier than REW and integrates well with the MiniDSP and remote. As much as I've fooled around with different curves, Dirac's auto curve and the Harmon curve sound the best. I made a nice looking V curve, like I set up an EQ when I was a kid- not good- I guess I like mid-range now. Setting it up is very easy and I didn't refer to the instructions, unlike REW. My take is, if $200 isn't a big deal, why wouldn't you try this? I guess the mediocre reviews the 2x4HD's DAC is getting would preclude someone from moving forward, but can we (if we're honest) hear the differences between this and something like the "super awesome" khadas tone board? Oh boy...my inner voice is telling me to get the MiniDSP SHD...
I heard from Z-review that Ultra sounds so much better than prime. I have almost all prime series except elevation. I really like the accuracy of the sound but the sound stage is killing me... Ultra was too expensive.. But I wish I bought Ultra at this point. I can't upgrade now because it's been 3 years since I bought all my Primes and I don't have the boxes anymore..
Just look up review of this svs speaker love it just got them ship to me . I need to look up your review on that amp from svs thanks keep up great review s
I honestly thought these Primes could dethrone the ELAC UB5's. If it had more bass extension, I think it could have. The specs on the Ultras don't show it having much more bass extension than the Primes. Only 3hz difference. I might be wrong. I have the opportunity to check out the Ultras so I will report back.
I just looked at your online leaderboard for the first time and you say the BS22-LR would be best even under $200. I also see you rank the UB5 as best all time. Considering that I think it would be interesting to get your take on the $180 Debut B4s for the following reasons. They were released without much fanfare a couple years ago after the B5 and B6 and didn't receive much love or attention even though what few reviews they did receive generally rated them solidly higher than the BS22-LR. Another reason I think it would be an interesting review for you is because when they were released Andrew Jones supposedly demo'd them alongside the UB5 in a sort of cheeky A/B comparison. I think their main shortcoming is their awkward price point. Not many people would probably recommend a full-priced $180 B4 over a much cheaper BS22 or a slightly higher priced B5/B6 but I just picked up a pair at $125 and I have a feeling I'm not going to be disappointed at all for that price. Anyway just food for thought. I love your channel please keep it up.
Any plan to review the Ultra bookshelf? I have them and they have pretty good bass but I run a big sub as well, the Rythmik G25HP. I power my ultras with a pair of bridged Crown XLS1502 amps. That’s 1050 watts into 8 ohms and the ultras can take it. Ever considered reviewing pro audio gear for home use? These crown amps are awesome and sound good.
Goodness no. My trained ears do that. That's why I am just now replacing my 70's era Advents. Truth be told, I decided to go with bookshelves and couldn't seem to find a pair that could replace the top end I get from the Advents. My room (basically a library) is about as dead as it gets. And it's rather cramped and I had to shoehorn the Advents in. I wanted less clutter so I decided to go with a nice set of bookshelves. I heard good things about the SVS Ultra's so I figured I'd give them a try. I am astounded over how good they sound and I'm talking from an audiophile perspective. I won't give you all the buzz words but it delivers everything we enthusiasts look for in a speaker. I'm sure there are better speakers out there but not at their price point. I have an opportunity to get a pair of Focal Electra's at a very good price (half price, actually) but I'm asking myself if they will sound $2000 better. I doubt it. I use reviews like yours to kinda separate the wheat from the chaff. I can also glean how a certain speaker sounds, that is, its overall tonal characteristics. For example, I could tell from your videos that the SVS had a very well defined top end. My room needs that and my ears prefer it. My SVS purchase was verified by the smile they put on my face. The relatively small bite they took out of my wallet didn't hurt either. If others are making you feel vindicated in the purchases you make, that's a shame. It's also quite a paradox because you clearly have the expertise and the intelligence to not be dependent on that.
I'm just joking. If I already purchased something, that means that I'm confident in my purchase. I don't buy things without researching first. I'm just saying that it's funny that I will continue watching videos about something I purchased like when I first got my F80 M3, to hear how how awesome it is.
Great video. I was wondering if you are able to measure group delay of the cabinets you review and show us? That tells a good deal about how a speakers sounds and how accurate it sounds.
Did ascend ever get back to you about a review unit? It would be very interesting to see that compared to other $1000 ballpark speakers. And how big of a difference if any compared to your ub5s. From all those sales on them I was wondering if a new unit was coming out and one did, the carina with a ribbon tweeter that's I believe $1200 a pair. The svs amp looks interesting as well. Maybe try contacting rythmik for a review unit of the L12, it's cheaper, smaller and generally considered a better choice which says alot. I used to have a svs sb1000 and know how well regarded they are with subs, if I were to get a sealed sub again I would go with rythmik.
I have reached out to Ascend and Rythmik in the past but no success getting review units yet. I'm ready to review their products as I've heard a lot of good things about them.
Thanks for the review! I'm super interested in how SVS matched up to Elac. You answered one of my questions for price for price. (prime vs UniFi) really curious how the ultra bookshelf line up to the ub5s. Think they'll send you the ultris at some point?
I don't think the Ultras really match up since they're double the price, and almost 3X the price when the UB5's are on sale. The specs on the Ultras seem to imply that they are tuned similarly to the Primes; with a focus on loudness instead of low frequency extension. They Ultra only goes down to 45hz (+-3dB) compared to 48hz(+-3dB) for the Prime. To summarize, I think both the SVS bookshelf lines are designed to work best with their subs.

Because a lot of folks are interested in using bookshelf speakers without subwoofers. A bookshelf with good bass might allow someone to get away with not using a sub depending on the type of music they listen to and their expectations.
hehe try the Ultra series
Yes, maybe soon. My buddy had some.
Don't like the top end of the svs line.
I think for cheaper the Wharfedale 225s sound way better, more balanced and musical.
Too bright for you?

Yep
I get it. It does have an elevated treble response. I still need to get a hold of some 225's!
I have Wharfedale Diamond 220 LCR. I can't hear dialogue clearly as desired in HT. I want to upgrade centre to Prime. What do you think?
I don't care timbre matching for the time being. I have Yamaha 677.
With certain laid-back speakers with recessed highs, you have to turn it up in order for voices to sound more intelligible. In that case, you may like the SVS. Very detailed and clear with the slightly elevated treble response.
