I've always preferred Zelda over Final Fantasy... They're both great though.

Both are amazing, but personally I have to hand it to FF7 :) Ocarina of Time is more nostalgic to me, but those Nobuo tracks are just too hard to beat!

I’m not even halfway through and I’ve already laughed out loud multiple times. Scriptwriting is on point

Man, I could listen to you talk about game music forever. These two games both stand out to me as just having ultra-memorable hit after hit. I think I know every single piece in both games and love them.
Also, I was pretty surprised how similar some of the tracks were. I never noticed it without them being right next to each other.

I love these kinds of videos. You have a great understanding of music which makes doing analysis and comparisons insightful and understandable. I also love the humor, I think you're super funny.

Seriously, the vast majority of what I learn on piano are from these two games

This is a trick question - they are both to the all-time top best soundtracks.
If I had to pick one over the other though, it would be final fantasy 7, hands down - no one can beat nobuo

Both are excellent, some of the best gaming music ever composed. I'm not surprised by your winner at all. Having never played FFVI I do not know its music and thus did not know that FFVII's music was based on FFVI. That makes me even more interested in playing it someday. Thank you. And feel free to wax endlessly about both games sometime.

FF6 really feels like a trial run of FF7, I recommend checking out the Pixel Remaster soundtrack of 6! It's super faithful and allows the music to shine even more.

It's a hard comparison but for me it's not close, LoZ's music is loved and I understand it but I just feel like it hasn't had the kind of profound impact on culture the same way FF7 did, there's so many covers and remixes of One Winged Angel, and it's even become a meme, clearly it's not just me who understands how great the music from FF7 is.
As good as LoZ is I just feel like it didn't have that same kind of impact, the music is all still good but beyond the game itself I don't really have any memories of it, One Winged Angel was everywhere and if I think really hard it may just seep its way into all of my memories, I can't remember a time without One Winged Angel anymore.
And while One Winged Angel was my example it is not my favourite song from Final Fantasy, not even my favourite song from FF7.

I'm a Japanese person who started liking games around the time Final Fantasy 7 came out, and I remember that game music Final Fantasy 7 was nominated in the Japanese CD sales ranking at that time. I was very happy because at that time, game music was not attracting much attention.
Actually, I recently started listening to your music after playing the Zelda series (Botw, Totk) for the first time, and it seems like Zelda has always had such wonderful songs.
It was great to hear about your game music!

I prefer the music of Final Fantasy but they both have some great soundtracks. I feel both Final Fantasy 16 and Breath of the Wild both weren't great games or soundtracks, unfortunately.

The easiest way to settle this. One game has One Winged Angel, the other does not. Just kidding. Both have beautiful soundtracks, and I forgot how good some of Ocarina of Time's songs were. In the end I'm still a loyal Sephiroth follower, but I still really enjoyed this video! Looking forward to what's next as always. Thanks Tim!

24:22 I completely and totally disagree with you that nobuo went overboard on the closing theme of final fantasy VII. Tying all those musical themes together back into the outro of the game has always been super awesome to me, using themes and melodies from the other pieces of the game to create an all-encompassing closing. I love it and always have

Oh on that point I agree, I'm talking more about the way he's trying to accentuate everything that happens on-screen in a kinda direct, dry way. The way he reuses motifs is awesome!

    doesn't ff7 have 2 overworld themes?
the first one being replaced close to the end of the game?

I really enjoyed this comparison. Two iconic games in their own right, both incredibly powerful in their impact on gaming and many people's formative (and beyond) years. It's amazing just how much power is lent to both in the music, both by the composers and the upgrade in tech at the time. While OOT wins for me, categorically both do an incredible job for their respective moods.

I love how certain themes are used to enhance the story and gameplay in FFVII. Some of my favorite examples are Those Chosen by the Planet and how it’s built up during the Nibelhiem flashback, Aeriths theme during the Jenova fight and the Main Theme during the lifestream sequence and reveal of Cloud’s true self. All of these story beats are amazing on their own, but the music really elevates the sequences
