Gravitas: Who was Napoleon Bonaparte

  • Napoleon Bonaparte finds a mention in every history book. There was a time he ruled much of Continental Europe, but he died far away from home, isolated, and in exile. Was he a hero or was he Europe's most divisive ruler?

Not many people know this, but when Napoleon was exiled and he came out of the prison, such was his power that not one man stood to defend his exit. The entire army just stood there, watching him leave, no voice raised. He was the greatest commander of modern history. What a life he had. Also not many know, but the first war that he fought with Russia was because of a woman. Tsar rejected his marriage proposal with his daughter because he said, Napolean was TOO SHORT in height. Napoleon on hearing this attacked Russia. A man with valour. An inspiration to me and thousands who read his life.
I don't understand what is wrong with today's generation, they try to judge people of history with ethics and morals of today. You have to understand, those were different time, society evolve over generation. Don't take it too hard.

His rule was a calamity for Europe but the French loved him and made him a national hero. No one else agrees. He was a complex character and this little clip gives it very short shrift.

For most of his reign, Nepoleane was master of Europe - emposing treaties on defeated nations, overthrowing old regimes, redrawing frotline and making new kings. He was the last figure in history who combined total political power with frontline military genius in the mould of Alexender and Ceaser. He ruled the contient at that time when British Empire was on its peak. But no one could challnge his suprimacy. All the colitions made against him collapsed one by one. His greatest achievement is that within 15 years of his reign he made France immortal in the history of the world. France never saw such a legend again. When Germany defeated France during WW2 in just 6 weeks, France might have realized that one day a frech leader used to control Germany with his left hand.

His Code paved the way for modern civil and criminal procedure codes. He pioneered what is now Archaeology by investigating Egyptian pyramids. His lineage continued for 100 years in Europe.
His act of placing his throne on his head with his own hands while Pope was standing beside him changed the course of history of Europe. It was customary for Pope to declare a king emperor by placing the throne on the emperor's head. But napoleon said that French throne was in the dust and I lifted with my own hands.

@Norman Tejeda Well actually both! Napoleon I decides to march on Russia in June. Nearly 700,000 soldiers, who constitute the largest army ever deployed, are mobilized for the Russian campaign, against 500,000 Russian soldiers. On September 14, Napoleon entered Moscow. But Tsar Alexander I refused to surrender. The Russians burn the city, leaving the soldiers unprotected to spend the winter. On October 18, Napoleon then ordered the retreat from Russia. General Mikhail Koutouzov took advantage of this departure to attack the Grand Army from all sides. On December 14, all of Napoleon's soldiers left Russian territory. In total, between battles, cold and disease, 200,000 soldiers of the Grand Army died during the Russian campaign.
The strategy of the Russian corps is clear and defined by General Barclay de Tolly: retreat, advance the invincible army into Russian lands and avoid combat at all costs. A few battles take place, Russian pride resurfacing: Smolensk, Moskowa. So many French victories, whatever Tolstoy says. When Napoleon arrived in Moscow in September, he was accompanied by 110,000 men. 100,000 were left behind. Others ? They have already disappeared starving dead, harassed by the Cossacks. The torrential rains in July slowed the advance of cars full of food and encouraged the spread of dysentery. Paradoxically, the terrible winter was preceded by a murderous summer: half of Napoleon's army is gone!
So you are right but for some reason the French mainly remember the cold winter: Victor Hugo: « Il neigeait. On était vaincu par sa conquête / pour la première fois l’aigle baissait la tête. » ("It was snowing. We were overcome by its conquest / for the first time the eagle lowered its head.")
Worth knowing; The “Greatest Army” in the world brings together Poles, Austrians, Italians, Prussians and Dutch. The French "grognards" only represent 40% of the convoy, mostly inexperienced soldiers since the bulk of the troops are in Spain to subdue the guerrillas.

I’ll correct the end of your intro: He was defeated by Wellingtons forces at Waterloo which included the then Prussians army. Prior to this the French Napoleonic forces were defeated by the British with a little help from the Portuguese and of course the Spanish forces on the peninsula, we know it as Portugal and Spain today. Wellingtons forces also kicked his ass and took back Toulouse before we learned that Wellington had defeated Napoleon already at Waterloo. So Napoleon was forced into exile because the British Duke of Wellingtons force and allies made it so. I like your channel but please don’t be over selective and leave out convenient historical fact. Just saying.
