I bought a John Deerre 14sb in 1989. It has started giving me trouble already!! In 2019, the clutch started making some awful 'bearing type' racket, so after pricing the part (!)... and if I wanted to have it installed(!)... *sheesh* I converted to a direct drive blade , just like I learned to mow with in 1954. I replaced the recoil starter, as the rope was starting to fray. I replaced all 4 wheels 4 or five years ago. This is May 2021, and NOW I have to pull off the gas tank and find out what seems to be plugging it so the engine is starving for gas... Only 32 years years old and trouble already!! They just don't make em like they use to :) It has been a jewel... it's mowed neighbors yards, church yards and uses no oil yet! I purchased an oil filter option for it when new, and have used nothing but 20w50, or when I coultn't find it, 15w50 synthetic oils. I'll be 76 in August... I think it is going to outlast me!! That Kawasaki engine has been 'bullet proof'. 5 out of 5 stars for the mower. I had previously, in 1972, bought a new Lawnboy 2 cycle. Another wonderful machine. My son used it commercially, for two years, mowing an appartment complex when in high-school, and it always mowed a church lot, and neighbors yards. I had it 17 years but it probably had double that of wear-and-tear. It was starting to have piston-slap, but ran well. The John Deere dealer offered me $50 trade in for the 5 speed 14sb, so I jumped on it. The Lawnboy had a magnesium deck and was probably less than half the weight of the John Deere, but had a ...slow... single speed drive train. Outstanding service from it also. They are the only two lawnmowers I've bought new in all these years...

Next time you change the oil or filter or spark plug could you video it so I can learn how to maintain my John Deere-same model as yours. Thanks for the video.

I have one sitting in my garage i bought new in 1995, Still starts on the first pull. Nice units, but very HEAVY! and it doesn't mulch good at all. I have a new Honda HRX217VKA that is a beast! Mulches to a fine powder.

Change the blade for a mulching one, day and night difference.

if it has the same frame as the sb and a 5 speed trans then it would fit. However, I think there was one of the s-series with a driveshaft driven system, so make sure yours is belt driven.

yes but the transcase is a sealed unit; no moisture can get in, otherwise grease would leak out when the wheels are spinning. i don't see how you can take used grease out of a gearbox without completely dismantling it and washing every gear and piece in a parts cleaner, reassemble and load it up with grease. unless it is acting up I see no reason to bother trying such a task. and usually when it acts up its because of the belt or the mechanism in the wheels

Yes it is a great mower. But now I seem to use my new(to the collection) Honda HR214 sx as my primary walk behind mower

it was my understanding that the handles where different colors to differentiate different engines, like Toro did with some models.

Any kind of oil based product can go,bad lawn mowers are exposed to moisture on a regular basis.Grease gets nasty when exposed to moisture and looses its lubricateing properties, and im sure the grease we have now is far more superior then the stuff they put in the mower 20 years ago.The parts for these mowers are next to none, so i would like to make the transmission last as long as possible.

can i just remove the bottom of the transaxle case and put new grease in it ? or do i have to remove the whole transaxle ?

I love my John Deere, one of the strongest mowers I've ever had. Would sip fuel before the government put all that shit enthonal in the fuel.

why and how in the world would you put new grease in? grease is there for the life of the machine, which is forever. you don't even need to add grease to those.

they aren't easily serviceable and they don't have fluid. it's full of heavy grease.
