Andy Irons: Kissed by God is a film about bipolar disorder and opioid addiction as seen through the life of three-time world champion surfer Andy Irons. Andy struggled with the same demons that millions of people worldwide battle with daily.
Andy was an incredible presence on the world stage as the “People’s Champion.” He was the pride of Hawaii and revered around the world for his blue collar rise to fame and success. However, many were unaware of his internal battles that led to his demise.
As the opioid crisis rises to a national emergency in the United States, the untold story of Andy’s life serves to tear down the myths associated with these two ferocious diseases.

I bought it and have watched it multiple times already. This documentary made me feel so many things. RIP Andy. As a person who suffers from Bipolar disorder as well, I found myself rewinding so many parts in this because of how much I relate to him. "Just a lot of thoughts, just a lot of...just stuff goin on". I have never related more to a piece. I waited a long time for this and it did not disappoint. Thank you so much for telling Andy's story with no bullshit and covers. It really is helping me.

A friend suggested I watch this film - I had not heard of Andy Irons, or had much interest in surfing and yet this film gripped me from start to finish. It is a powerful, beautifully filmed and edited human story of love and tragedy. Love to the Irons' and everyone involved in making this movie.

Being a longtime surfer just a half generation (6 yrs older than A.I.) ahead of Andy - I'd followed his wild career all the way up through his passing. Having also been a bit of a wild party child myself, witnessing his tragic passing hit me hard and had me rethink my "ways". So much so that a month & a half later on new yrs - I quit drinking for 6 months. While it was a mistake 6 mo's later to drink again, I'd luckily toned it down to just beer and 1 night/week only thereafter for next several yrs up till 2 yrs ago when I quit drinking all together for good, thankfully. We sometimes see our heroes as invincible but Andy's death was a sobering reminder nobody is & that substance abuse is a dangerous Russian roulette not worth the risks. Opiates as well as alcohol - while both "legal" are way more risky & dangerous than the bought & paid for TV ads portray them to be. Glad the true story is being told here vs the B.S. dengue fever lies the surf/mainstream media tried to spin. Kids, parents, pro's, etc... let this be a lesson learned to not repeat. Rest in peace Andy - you were an amazing surfer and wild energetic spirit (bi-polar and all...) & will always be remembered for that intense fire !!

I applaud your sobriety. I would like to add that Andy had bipolar disorder and his addiction to alcohol and opiates was compounded by that illness. Individuals who suffer from bipolar disorder become addicted to all manner of behavior....drinking alcohol, taking drugs, impulsive spending, gambling...to null the demons in their brain. Unfortunately, from a very young age, Andy was subjected to emotional pain (his parents' divorce, having undiagnosed dyslexia, being called/thought of himself as "stupid in school) and exposure/use of alcohol (age 5-6), dope (7-8) and becoming part of a party world with huge earnings as a young teen all contributed to his addiction. I have yet to see someone like him whose depression and manic episodes were so high on the spectrum of BP. To lay on a floor, not speak, isolating for 2-1/2 months then getting up and virtually winning 50 ft surf competitions within days is beyond inspirational. It's heartbreaking to watch how he declined and suffered and like so many people who go to treatment centers for several months can come out healthy, it only takes one use of a substance, telling yourself that's all you're going to do) to hit that strong addiction...and, again, with bipolar disorder (also, being such an athlete, I get how he didn't want to take drugs for BP, which can sometimes be as difficult to cope with as the illness itself.) He truly was kissed by God and it breaks my heart to watch this documentary but I've watched it several times nonetheless.

Much love, always, to the Irons family. Andy is one of my greatest inspirations to find a way to enjoy this life even through the inner demons creating darkness. And Lyndie is one of my greatest inspirations for hope and peace, and has taught me to love the ones in my life as deeply as I can. I am so grateful for this movie and how they are choosing to share it. I will treasure this movie greatly. Mahalo

+Sybil Chenault The most moving part for me is when Bruce tells the story about the day after the Chile competition when Andy asked him 'Are you afraid of dying?'

    • @A.C.71
      @A.C.71 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I wish you clinical therapists would learn about something other than drugs that just dope people up until they're no longer themselves. Why do I say that ? Because I'm Bipolar and spent many years on meds which never worked, my life was hanging on by a thread until the day I seen Empower Plus Vitamins from TrueHope featured on Discovery Health Channel. They were developed for people with Bipolar. My doctor was dead against me trying them but after I insisted and was on them for 3 months and off all my meds my doctor wrote in my chart I had a miraculous change. When I asked him if he could tell other people with Bipolar about them he stated that he could not..only if they mentioned them could he talk about his experience with them. People in your profession have blinders on and just prescribe meds which mask symptoms then you feel like you've done something marvelous. People in your profession should know about other therapy's that work..even if they are not a medication..you would think that would be even better if what works best is not even meds but special vitamins. After all these years, 17 and counting I've never seen a single doctor on television or heard of a single doctor talking about them and over a hundred thousand people have been helped by TrueHope. If you really want to help people with this horrible illness try pulling your head out of the sand and back off the greed machine, then maybe you'll start to truly help people. sorry about the tone but I've seen to many Bipolar people end their lives over the years that were being "treated" by doctors in your field.

There are vitamins specially made for people with out disorder called Empower Plus Vitamins from TrueHope. I had the privilege and pleasure luckily to watch Andy and Bruce in the late 90's at their home in Kauai. accompanied by reef Macintosh and many others, Braden Diaz, kaipo jaquias, Kai garcias, chava greenlee, Terry Chung, Titus kinimaka, Laird, and Bill Hamilton. I was never, will never and have never considered myself in their realm of understanding the ocean ( Bruce irons as well, um, meha and Ruben balmores, as well as Tyrone Fitzpatrick, and John and frank Medeiros, kala, and kamalei, too many more to type, but Andy and Bruce and their crew. what an education in being one, completely, with what u r surrounded with. hats off, head bowed, respect given, and felt, and remembered, forever! all my love to these people as well as to all who live aloha!

"Cannot be tamed without killing the persons spirit"?? I am type 2 bipolar and was diagnosed after a serious suicide attempt back in 2005. When I started taking medications, I did not lose my spirit. I am even more spirited now then I was without the medications. The meds and counseling helped me to get rid of the loss of control that the disease causes, allowed me to focus and, to essentially, be me. I am the first one to say, "Fuck it," and live life to the fullest. Hardly tamed my spirit.

tia ria Good to hear.Unfortunately that was not the case for my best friend. It has basically killed him in spirit . It is like the real person is dead

I am sorry to hear that. Having the right doctors and the right medications is critical. The wrong stuff definitely made me feel like a zombie, so we stopped those meds and kept trying new ones until we found the right ones. It did take a while. I hope for your friend that they can find a different course of meds to be on. Life is far too precious to stop fighting for it. Wish you all the best and that you win this fight.

the title of this doco disturbs me from the outset. the pressure this poor man must have been under to 'be' brilliant all the time must have been immense. having bipolar or any other mental health issue on top of being creative in any way doesn't mean you've been kissed by god. i can tell you now - i can reassure you now, having a mental health problem like depression - in any form, is not a gift from heaven - nor a heavenly experience. that title is wrong from where i'm sitting. i have a feeling that Andy Irons may have had a similar outlook too. it sounds more like a curse than a kiss.

If the Association of Surfing Professionals instituted drug testing they might be able to save lives.

Yes there were the drugs, and he paid the ultimate price with his life. Hopefully the next gen of kids take that into consideration before they follow down that road. Lets not lose sight of the fact that Andy was undeniably, the only human on this earth that could shake King Kelly to the core. He knew that even Gods bleed..the rest of the pack were surfing for second.

As others have suggested using the drugs and that getting out of control was more likely due to an underlying instability and trying to have some control over it. The unfortunate thing is there still isn't effective treatment for all bipolar and thus turning to drugs and alcohol will continue for many.
None of this takes away that Andy Irons sounds like a dude.
