    Surface Go has a ton of potential. I wish the keyboard wasn't so expensive but it really is a tiny and super portable Surface computer. Thanks for watching!

    • @ThomasNing
      @ThomasNing 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Dave Lee that's the thing with the price, I'm pretty sure that the keyboard is priced like that to make up for the Laptop's low if not non-existent profit margin. Of course that's not an excuse on the surface pro, but anyway.

    "overall, it is not cheap." Dave is one of the few tech reviewers who is genuine enough to say those kind of things. Most tech reviewers just act like 'hey if you can afford it it's great' and then they talk about how good it is and all that. The whole - making the video entirely positive to make ppl think it's a good review, that's not yaboi's approach, and we appreciate him for that.

      I love MKBHD, but I hate it when he presents us devices like the OP6 as budget options, just because it's not as crazily overpriced as the Samsung or Apple devices.
      I mean, 500 bucks is still a fuck ton of money.

      @IDiggPattyMayonnaise 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I feel like everyone says products are overpriced unless its apple. Then they just say generic phrases like "premium price for a premium product" or "it feels worth the price." Reviewers have finally had it with the iphone xs prices, but still too many are saying its worth it even though its essentially the same phone. It was the same with the s8 and s9.

    • @jaimeastin
      @jaimeastin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Best way to do it... If I see an intro, I usually leave. Play music, I leave. I am not here to be entertained. I want the content. A lot of the intro stuff is relics of TV and commercial marketing. It was to trap you. It's not needed, but many people mimic what they are used to seeing. Other people or just used to seeing it and it looks out of place when it's not there. But it's not needed at all and it's in the way.
      This is how you do a product overview or review. Perfect execution.

    I've hated on Microsoft a little for the prices of the Surface line, but I picked up a used Surface 3 and I gotta say...it is shocking how much I like it.
    The webcam and speakers alone are simply stunning, let alone the staggering build quality.
    So my complaint remains on price new, but it is worth it if you can spend it. You'll get what you're paying for.

      Geek Therapy Radio Yeah my aunt offered to buy me a device for college and I said I wanted a surface. I'm going into Computer Game Design and Development so she wouldn't let me convince her to get me the base model surface Pro. She also insisted on throwing in the pen when I only wanted the keyboard (though it's funny that I ended up using the pen more). When it was all said and done, the bill plus tax was almost THIRTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS, close to the price of my desktop but with a lot less hardware. I wasn't even the one paying but it hurt me when they rang that up. That said, when I got to using the device, I felt like I was transported to the future. The functionality is just wonderful but like you said man, those prices... MAN those prices...

    A thick bezel is good, you can't hold your tablet on a small bezel with one hand, don't try being fancy by making a small bezel on a tablet form factor, small bezel for phone is fine, but not for tablet, unless Windows 10 have a software feature that can eliminate accidental touch on the screen when you're holding on a small bezel

    Anyone in 2019 that's still looking at the surface go, definitely go for the 8gb ram model. Its snappier. Since i bought it and used it a lot for the week, its been nothing but kind to me. If you do not mind the uncommon stuttering and the 1 usb c port, it is a very good device for people who want portability AND functionality at a cheaper price. Though it is not cheap with the 8gb model with the $99 keyboard, it comes up around $600+ (The cheapest near me was at a best buy with Kb and surface go bundled with office 365 free, totaling at $780 including tax in my area) So if anyone does find a place that has it on sale, snag it, its worth it.
    Id also like to note that the device does come with 1 MicroSD slot (up to 128gb) Worth it if you do install games on it or have pictures as well.

    Excellent first review, as always Dave Lee. The mid-tier model you tested has some HUGE advantages over the base model - namely the 8GB of RAM and the SSD drive (compared to 4GB RAM and eMMC). What's interesting is that Costco is selling a package/bundled version of the Surface Go for $549 which contains the keyboard and the 128GB SSD drive - but only 4GB of RAM. I'm curious to see how this performs compared to the base and mid-tier versions.

    Problem is what starts at 400 dollars very nearly doubles its price with the model and keyboard you want, to avoid eMMC memory. The Costco exclusive model with 4GB RAM but a 128GB SSD has the most appeal, but this is a tad tough for me when you start getting into some ok ultrabooks at 800.

    • @Kynareth6
      @Kynareth6 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It would be an awesome product worth our money for 400$ if Microsoft provided the better specs version with keyboard included but currently it gets too expensive. I advise getting an ultrabook instead.

    • @shinya1215
      @shinya1215 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest two selling point Surface Go offered over other Celeron/Pentium netbook is the 4096-level touch screen and windows hello. However, to make the full potential of Surface Go as a computer the extra 200 USD for keyboard and pen is a must and that's easily 2 to 3 times of the price to a similar performance(speed, weight, battery life) netbook.
      Build quality? look how long it takes M$ to make Surface Pro kinda problem-free, I won't be that confidence to Surface Go so early.
      So, if that pen is not a must for your daily use it really makes little sense not to make a better use of your money.

    • @Kynareth6
      @Kynareth6 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shinya1215 there is always something wrong with Surfaces, Surface Laptop 2 for example has only 1 USB-C and 1 unnecessary DisplayPort instead of Thunderbolt 3 which limits device's functionality (without extension port hub which costs extra)

It just M$ won't let it happen to threat their higher product line.....

      Nororlol 4life still impressive, and shows how far out of control the mobile market is. Although you could argue that the iPhone X is more of a fashion item than for function and compare it to £500 same-performance phones.

    • @ChristopherLXD
      @ChristopherLXD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You know... the iPhone X has geek bench performance scores three times that of this device. Meanwhile, the bezel less OLED displays add a ton to the cost while the incredible miniaturisation needed to fit everything within that package also costs plenty. Similar reasons why a lot of phones also cost more than this Surface GO. Plus, faceID is much faster (from what I've seen) than the Windows Hello cameras and there still isn't a better handheld AR device than an iPhone (tracking and accessibility wise). The iPhone X can be a fashion item if it's user deems it to be, but can also be as much of an instrument for creating and consumption if the user so chooses to use it as.

    • @ChristopherLXD
      @ChristopherLXD 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Too small" Um no, iOS and iOS Apps are all optimised for this screen size, making it perfectly adequate, unlike Windows and it's mash of modern and antiquated UI elements.
      "little to no accessory support" "The sheer variety of iPhone accessories on the market is astounding." - Digital Trends, 2018.
      "OS sucks compared to Windows" In terms of what? Features being on time? UI Consistency? Continuity and coherence with other devices from the same manufacturer?
      “its battery life sucks to boot” “Does the iPhone X have good battery life? It's pretty good - nothing to write home about but if you've had another Apple handset for a few years you'll be very pleased with how well it lasts during the day.” - TechRadar, 2018.
      The iPhone X is more than capable to provide uses as a productivity device on the go throughout the day, although you wouldn’t want to start an excel spreadsheet on it, marking up and commenting on documents, taking notes, reading articles and documents, managing your schedule and planning your day should all be tasks easily accomplished on this phone. No, it’s not a laptop replacement, but to say it has no value for productivity simply isn’t true. I know for one that you can definitely throw together simple videos, presentations and manage customer interactions on social media and webpages just fine, especially for more urgent ones while you are on the go. It’s not meant to replace your desktop, but it certainly has it’s place whether it be a bit of work over lunch or on the subway on your daily commute. The speed of the device with it’s aggressive processor ramps also helps decrease the amount of load and processing time to reduce your interaction time to you can get right back to whatever else you were doing, hitting the ideal kind of performance you’d want on a device that bridges your interactions between being available at a desk.

    Thanks for this excellent review. This is the secondary device I have been waiting for. I have used the Surface Book (1TB of storage) as my primary computer since 2016 and am very satisfied. have tried both iPads and Samsung Tab S3 as a secondary device for both content and basic productivity, but both fail because of the limitations in the operating systems. Finally in the 128GB Surface Go (with MSFT keyboard) I have a device that functions well as as the iPad and T3 a tablet for consuming content and for portability, but works very well as a basic productivity device once I switched to W10 Home (I had the staff at the Microsoft Store do this for me at the time of purchase). I use my QNAP NAS to sync up key files through QSync (instantaneous, quite amazing), and added a 256GB micro SD for my photos and music, leaving plenty of room on the native 128GB drive. Total success when taken to my first business meeting as my lone device (in addition to a Note 8 phone), as the company's tech guy was able to connect wirelessly to their video display system and I was able to deliver a large PPT presentation easily and without any lag. This unit is cheap enough so that I will replace it with the inevitable upgrades in RAM and storage in a year or so, and this unit will then replace the ancient MacBook pro in the kitchen. In the meantime, this is my go-to device to take on business trips and for personal travel because it is highly functional, weighs nothing, and is a pleasure to use.

    I think the trackpad size is fine. I don't know if you ever used the Surface 3 (non-Pro) but the trackpad on that thing was a joke. It was so tiny. Also the Surface connect port for charging is a good move because, again, the Surface 3 used a micro USB port and the current draw of the device was so great that you couldn't use it and charge it at the same time. It seems like Microsoft has built a pretty good device this time around; now if they could only flesh out their app store to make the Surface Go a more enticing tablet device, and not just a tiny laptop.

      The app count in the Microsoft Store Windows App Market is a Windows 10 and 8.1 thing alone , not an issue with the Surface Go because if that is the case then you might has well say that about every Windows Tablet , Laptop , and Desktop right now .I can say that the app count is growing in the market and will continue to grow overtime as support for older versions of Windows like Windows 7 that is not supported by the Microsoft Store Windows App Market reaches their end of extended support date and developers who continue to use Windows afterwards will go up to even Windows 8.1 and start to see that Microsoft Store Windows App Market that was the Windows Store . I know that it's still a long time to wait but in the end the wait will be worth it .
      If it came down to it , Since I currently use a laptop with 4GB of RAM I would like me a Surface Go to help share tasks with My Laptop so that I am not having to always rely on my laptop to do all of the work .
      For now , I have the RCA Cambio with the 2GB of RAM and it is doing as much of the job as it can but although I would need me an OTG for the Surface Go when I am at summer camp for a week every year I could make it work with a 4GB of RAM 10 inch Windows 10 tablet more than anything else .

I understand that the processor is not the most powerful but it feels like the the 8gb ram I got is almost useless. I thought I would be able to at least browse youtube smoothly but it gets really annoying and I find it hard to believe that I paid $650 for a device that can't even run a website I use everyday without lagging. I'm in love with how the device looks and its portability but if I can't even browse youtube smoothly then what's the point of paying for a surface go when my 2013 laptop with 4gb of ram can handle chrome and youtube just fine? I've installed all the updates needed and switched out of s mode, now I just want to be able to browse the internet without being interrupted. I bought this computer for school and for watching videos (basic browsing stuff) but I really wish that the web browsing felt fast enough to the point where I won't have to notice the lag. If all I can afford is the 400 dollar one, how big of a real world difference is that going to make...especially if I intend to keep it in S mode. A big difference? Not a whole lot? Nobody has said.

      ok here is why. The base model is equipped with an emmc 5.0 drive which is the standard used few years ago on cell phones. The speed of emmc 5.0 on today's satndard is just pathetic. Imagine using a today's computer with IDE drives, system performence will be limited by the speed of drive. Difference as "this is a fast little tablet or computer" to "why is it always laggy".

      It's not about the os itself although it's running android and as same as Mohammed Yaseen said it's just a dex UI. I'm considering this device because it's portable and it has a pen (s-pen) so u can use it for designing purposes because that's what I'm looking for in the first place

    it's a shame that the accessories destroys the value proposition of the device. If the pen is as good as on the surface pro 4 and it was included with the mid-tier model, I would buy it in a heartbeat. But yeah, that keyboard....the device becomes expensive quite quickly. But guess I could pack my logitech K400. It's not really a LAP-top anyway. :)

    Dude this is awesome. I just (weeks before the release of the Go 2) grabbed an OG Surface Go in excellent condition for like $350 full specs. I love it. It has become my main computer even though I have the OG Surface Book with the 16 GB of RAM for work and my personal computer of choice before this was the 2017 MacBook Air. The screen on this little Go is far better than the Air and way more portable than the Surface Book. I absolutely love it. I do still have the MacBook Air but for the last few weeks I have barely used it really. I might just sell it and use an old desktop with a ton of ports to manage all my external hard drives and run my home server. Other than that, the Go is really all I need.

      Hassan, for one, the Surface family is a set of "hero devices" (more expensive than OEMs to showcase MS' intentions in the market). Secondly, buying a laptop is NOT the same as having a hybrid/2-in-1; you can't hope to do any sort of pen-input well, even if they have touchscreens. Thirdly, design and/or form factor is a huge part of a purchasing decision. Of course you can always get something cheaper with similar specs, but, like Apple has shown, people are willing to pay for design and expensive materials. You're obviously not that person, but I am. I want a desktop PC and a Surface device that I can toss in a bag almost unnoticed and also look good with when using. Why would I buy a cheap laptop that is a crappy replacement for a desktop PC and doesn't have the slim and flexible form factor of a Surface device? I don't mind paying a 100 bucks for a keyboard when it complements the rest of the HW well. People have been paying hundreds for keyboards and mice for years, this is no different.
      Greets, a very happy Surface Pro 3 user for 3.5 years.

    • @Garrettjohnson94
      @Garrettjohnson94 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They could have included it with ever device and just increase the price. Then you wouldn't know how much you were paying for the keyboard. They decided to allow you to choose if you wanted it or not, which I think is a good thing.

    I have a Surface Pro (2017 ) with the i5 and 4GB RAM. I use it for entertainment (youtube, movies, etc.), photo editing and work with OpenOffice. Absolutely love it. It's a tablet that runs a full desktop OS (Windows 10 PRO), with plenty of power, good battery life and a great screen. The pen works great and is priced right in-line with what Apple's pen costs. The keyboard is awesome as well.
    Also, the Surface connector has a big advantage over USB-C in that it's magnetically attached, which means that the cord will separate from the device before it drags the off the edge of your desk/table/etc.

    Watching this on the surface go and it's very, very good. I have a gaming laptop that is very, very bulky, so I was in the market for a laptop that I could actually take with me everywhere. The surface has always been intriguing to me simply for being a competent windows 10 tablet and I put a lot of trust in Microsoft to manufacture a device to do Windows 10 justice for obvious reasons. They really did with this device. I do ALL my work on this device and most of my fun stuff (excluding high level gaming). It works precisely as I expected and the keyboard is awesome (it doubles as a cover).
