It's a fantastic console! I wish I had the Saturn rather than the PS1 when I was younger, just because I was a fighting games junkie, and this has some fantastic fighting games.

I have never played Final Fight Revenge, however I'm surprised at the scathing reviews. The game engine and footage makes it look very similar to Justice Gakuen/Rival School on the Playstation, also from Capcom. I wonder if these titles had some of the same people working on both and if the difference in quality really is that immense...

Always fascinated with Saturn. Its always felt like a prototype than a finished product with that 3d graphic chip added in the last mitune and that weird cpu setup. it was my first console I bought like 10 years ago because saturn emulation was really bad back than and its still one the hardest system to emulate without any problem it's still glitchy
Actually, it was designed with both VDP1&2. The 2nd chip with the 2nd CPU to better help with calculations since it was clocked slower than the PS1 on its own. It’s technically more capable than the PS1, but different to achieve because of its complicated design, especially at a time where it was mostly unheard of to have any multi cpu processing. Like another commenter said, it was like SoJ didn’t take SoA seriously in then prioritizing 2D over 3D. The hardware designer (Hideki Sato) outright said that he had the opportunity to base Saturn off of what we did get or the Model 1 board. He chose what we know as the final Saturn design because, outside of AM2, none of the other software teams wanted to go 3D yet, they just wanted more power in the 2D space. So yes, 3D was secondary in Saturn’s design. The newly leaked docs paint a picture that SoA wanted to give 3rd parties more support to not make straight ports from ps1 to Saturn, but rather utilize its unique features to make games run more competitively, and not look so unfavorable next to the ps1 originals. The whole thing was just a disaster for the company because of their internal affairs.

In my country, (Brazil) the Saturn was discontinued in 1999. Tectoy (representative of Sega) kept importing the Japanese model to the country till then. In Japan, the Saturn was discontinued in 2000 as far as I remember. At last, in my house keep active to date. I'm always playing it.
Funny you just updated that I just finished swapping my north american fenrir modded saturn into a Japanese model 2 shell. Looks so much better in white. Kept the black button from the north american one because I always thought the pink one was a bid odd
I started playing Panzer Dragoon Saga last week. Such a stellar game with a somber and elegant art style. I love it. The gamer demographic at that time was younger so It’s easy to see why a Final Fantasy would be more popular. Sega was ahead of its time with that game.
D&D Tower of Doom was initially going to be released standalone before supposedly being canceled in favor of the collection. The Playstation version of the collection was considered for the US, but that was canceled too.
Love the vid. I was a sega kid back in the day and I remember getting a choice between the Saturn and the PSX. I chose the Saturn because to me sega had a history of being in the video game market, was one of the big two during the last gen and while they had the missteps with the sega cd and 32x I felt that they were in a better position than the PSX. To me the PSX was a companies first console and I had seen plenty of companies try their hand at the video game console market with a first console and almost all died a painful death. I loved the Saturn, the fighting games specifically were awesome and I think I had road rash on there too which I enjoyed. Sadly I think because of the hardware being a pain in the backside to program for the system really suffered especially in the states while the new kid (the PSX) flourished.
Okay, as an asian Saturn player, here's some excus, I mean explanations. 1) During the late 90's to early 21st century, when a Japanese gaming console is in its dying status, Dating sim developers who usually make games on PC, gains up on the last breath of the console and release ports of their "gal games" on the system. while the same applied to other consoles but the Saturn was the most impacted since the system supported better 2D graphics than others and also had Sega's own rating system - enabling to release adult content games(althogh slightly censored). not to mention the Sega brand of the system lead to their games selling lot more than their original PC version. 2) Actually, due to the flood of dating sims being released on the system, Sega ditched the X-rating from their rating board. no pornographic games were allowed since than. all the dating sim games listed in this video was released under "All age" or "Age limit" category. so you might find some of these games disturbing by how LD depicted it, but it's not that disturbing like things you see in the internet. 3) The main feature of the Roommate series was that the game links with the Saturn's clock when you turn on the system. if you put the game on during the time the heroine is absent or sleep you won't be able to communicate with her. while the premise of the game lets you imagine something lewd could happen, the game was "all age" rated and no such thing happened except for a departing kiss scene in the ending. 3-2) While the intension of Roommate was the player to play the game real time, you could just cheat and see the ending quick by changing the Saturn's clock. 4) Not even the mighty Playstation couldn't escape the fate of having dating sim flood when it was passing the generation, this trend did stop around the time of PS3/PSP, as releasing games on the mobile phone was much cheaper and profitable than making game for a dying console. 5) If you're into Dating sims like I do, I highly recommend With you and Tokimeki memorial Drama series vol. 3 (not 4, since 3 was the last). actually the Saturn was the best version and no other port of the game exists.
SEGA's ultimate problem was that Sega of America couldn't take a shit without Japan's say so. They were used to force feeding their own people ports from their arcade, but SONY Playstation produced better exclusives. I'm disappointed in SONY for not reproducing sequels from the first generation of PS well, but I can't argue they have a far more loyal fanbase and more exclusives.
Here in the states Sega was hugely popular and gaining tons of momentum with the Genesis and Seta CD. Thier ads were well known, and people loved the games. Then the whole 32x and saturn debacle happened and the PlayStation came out and sega was dead in a few months completely. Dreamcast just came too late to save them despite being good.

Burning rangers is a game I didn’t play and still wish they would remaster it or something. If you wanted 2d games you got a Saturn hands down. The Saturn was better. With the expanded RAM you could fully play X-Men vs Street Fighter, with the ability to switch between characters. Making the Saturn ports was the downfall. Genesis / Megadrive & Dreamcast were easy. Saturn was WTF?!?

I'm glad Sega isn't entirely defunct, but boy did it ever get close. I still think they'll make a comeback, as crazy as that sounds.

Pretty sure if they properly announced/advertised before release, the Saturn probably would have been more successful in the US.
For me it was the blockiness of the 3d graphics, choppy frame rates at times and the colour (which at times made the zoomed pixels more distinct)

I never thought a grooming simulator would be the kind of game I would find on the Sega Saturn. Very questionable tastes over in Japan to say the least...

And vice versa in Japan.

All these execs always do this. They come in and treat the current hardware like it should be aborted into the sun and talk about how the new hardware will fix it all. Saturn had amazing games Japan side. I had my Saturn modded. Just playing xmen/msh vs sf basically arcade perfect was amazing. Burning rangers is a game I didn’t play and still wish they would remaster it or something. If you wanted 2d games you got a Saturn hands down. Meanwhile we can’t even get marvel vs capcom 2 on current consoles
The Saturn was better. With the expanded RAM you could fully play X-Men vs Street Fighter, with the ability to switch between characters.
Making the Saturn ports was the downfall. Genesis / Megadrive & Dreamcast were easy. Saturn was WTF?!?
