Biggest thing is thanks to downsizing, offshoring, and outsourcing for the last 25 years, and recently with AI/Automation taking even more people out of the loop - many of the decent jobs that used to be up for grabs are few and far between now, and many of those are often reserved for those whom are relatives or cronies of people in high places, otherwise it's often a low paying (often P/T) position... Even with all that, there are no guarantees, as a corporate takeover can change everything in a fortnight! Gig jobs, 1099 contract positions, and H1B assignments are fast taking over... Certain companies and corporations just don't want permanent positions anymore... Cost is always the bottom line...
