one thing I've noticed with my ipad (which I've had for 3 years) is that I've found myself intensely missing shortcut keys. Also 12.9 inches is not roomy enough for me in apps like Clip Studio where the UI takes up a lot of the screen. I don't really take my ipad out with me much either. I think my next upgrade will be a pen display instead.

You must use a lot of palettes in your Clip Studio Paint workspace. Have you considered the various keyboard attachments for the iPad Pro? Like the Logitech combo touch or a Bluetooth keyboard

I think iPad is a particularly good choice if you're serious about art but both value mobility and are also still a beginner, primarily because of Procreate which is a super friendly app that can let you do great things with not too much practice. Obviously, a completely serious and professional artist with years of experience is going to prefer an actual pen tablet every time.

I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to open an image (jpeg, png) using a movie player on iOS that will give you picture-in-picture, so you can have a moveable, resizable reference image that always floats over your work, and not all that wasted vertical space as you demonstrated with slide-over.
Or maybe we'll just make an app that does this.

started my journey with a screenles pen tablet, than bought an ipad i missed the desktop functionality and bought a cintiq 16, now im mostly drawing with my 3rd gen ipad air :) im thinking to buy a new pro 12,9. I'm not a graphic designer nor a concept artist. decided that procreate fulfills my needs more than enough. And I'm also bored to be stuck at the desk in my room with the cintiq and all those cables omg :)

This comment. I own a Kamvas Pro 13 which is quite good, but I'm tired of having to handle all the cables and have to put the display in place every time I need to draw/paint (I don't have a lot of space so it cannot be in place all the time). I think I'll get an Ipad Air 5 for this reason.

  • @kenchen821

Hi thanks for this video. It's the only comparison video I found where you put two devices together. I'm struggling between iPad Pro 12.9 and Cintiq 16. I'm a little bit to the iPad side but my concern is most of the concept art especially environment art are drawn on a 16:9 canvas right? would the drawing area be much smaller on iPad than on the Cintiq 16 since the iPad is in 4:3 aspect ratio? But then I figured out that if I use procreate on iPad which has the minimum clutter of UI it seems that the canvas is not that much smaller than if I use csp or ps on Cintiq because those softwares have a lot of ui on the sides?

    • @teohontech7141
      @teohontech7141  ปีที่แล้ว +1

*Choose based on the apps you want to use.* The thing with Cintiq and at 16-inches is you can still have palettes open by the side and have a good amount of space left for drawing.

In my opinion I prefer pen displays. What many have not noticed is when for e ample you are using procreate, turn off the smoothing and streamline options, you will notice the Apple pencil is the worst pen accuracy with software. I did the same experiment on my pc and Samsung tab, turned off the smoothing settings on all apps for Samsung , Ibis paint and infinite painter , wacom pens was more accurate without any smoothing settings compared to Apple. Procreate is what makes Apple pencil seem functional, so I will pick a screen display anytime for extra buttons and better accuracy than apple

    • @jonzalkin

@@teohontech7141 you are correct that it would only work for a Mac user. As far as the mouse wouldn’t choosing mirror screen solve that issue? I’m torn between an iPad because I could take just it with me vs the larger working area of a pen display.

@@jonzalkin If you choose mirror screen, it defeats the purpose of having two screens.
As for getting the iPad vs Pen Display, well, it really comes down to the apps you want to use. If you don't have any specific apps you need to use, you can actually just choose either. Both can get the job done, just in different manner. And iPad has portability which is the main selling point after you decide what apps you need.

I don’t really think the iPad is that portable just because of the fact that it is in the end a fragile piece of glass and any screen protectors will decrease contrast or tamper with the display. And yes, the more you use the iPad the more scratches you’ll get that tamper with the display. So it’s really whether you want to have a tablet for all sorts of things or a tablet specifically for art

    • @UP209D

in iPad you have choice to use the screen protector or not, in drawing tablet you have no choice cuz the matte screen is the only option and it is bad just as the paper like screen protector, and honestly due to that drawing tablet screen is terrible out of the box already.

Very nice video! But I'm still wondering what would be the best for me. I am between the IPad Air 5 and the Huion Kamva Pro 13.
I am a new product design student without experience with drawing tablets. The thing is that I will be traveling almost 2 hours by train every day for the next 3 years and I thought that the IPad air would be best because of the portability. Plus I have a student discount for Apple for which I get 100 euros discount on the IPad + 100 euros gift card which I can use to buy the Pen. With the discounts the Ipad Air 5 is the max of my budget, and can't even afford the IPad pro 2020 refurbished, only the 2018 one, would it be still better than the Air 5 ?
