The Mars Volta is not that easy to get into, like you say, this is definitely one of the bands that take a few listens to *get it*, because of the complexity of the instrumentations, and because they usually are part of a larger context that you don't have here. One thing I can tell you, one song does not define what they are, and listening to other songs will bring a different experience, the next one in the album is like a merge between Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, and the one after is half Cuban "son", and the one after is like a weird ghost song with mostly trumpets (played by Flea from RHCP). In this particular album, the long parts of "noise" are of reference of the protagonist's travels, they're meant to make you feel some of what he's feeling.
I have to admit it took me a few listens, but right now I consider Frances the Mute one of the best prog albums of the last 30 years.

It definitely benefits from a full 80 minute sit down too. It changes the vibe from very-long-song to a bunch of movements and such. One of my favorites.

Woooo! You talkin' to me! Haha! Hey man, appreciate the honesty. I understand what you're saying about some of the tracks being shorter. They really love adding atmosphere, space, and story into their tracks which can make it rough when you just wanna rock out. I'm glad you had fun with the track, and I'll definitely request some more TMV now that I know the vein to aim for! Thanks again Marcos! I just about shit a brick when I saw it pop in my sub box haha.

This band has has never been an easy listen for me, but man do they have some unique, killer grooves. They are a lot like King Crimson to me in that way. I find them to be a hard listen too but their genius is undeniable.

Yeah, it's definitely an album that benefits from a full sit through, as opposed to a song by song. Especially when there's a lot of album tone-building ambiance.
And yeah, preposterously dense and like, incomprehensible lyrics. They're almost coheedlike in that they make more sense with outside investigation, but unlike coheed, there's not a super parse-able interpretation on the surface

The last part builds up to the next song.

I feel like any song off of their first album Deloused in the Comatorium would’ve been a much better choice. They’re more accessible and harder hitting with no weird spacious interludes. I would recommend Roulette Dares or Drunkship of Lanterns.

the mars volta song i heard first was inertiatic esp which i loved and it grew from there. Definitely check out At the drive in another band some of them were in, maybe start with one armed scissor.

Glad to hear you enjoy Cedric's vocals Marcos. I struggle with The Mars Volta for the same issues with song length, so that's why I stick to At the Drive In. I like this song too though, 8:37 - 11:10 is really good and if it ended there I'd like it even better

Cracks me up that they split that song up on the cd because the jerk record company was gonna treat it like an ep, even though it was a full 80 minute album.

React to anything from their first 4 albums but it's more of the same insane/random white noise/jazz fusion. Not for the squeamish.

Never got into this band. They had a really popular song back in the day but I can't remember what it was.
