I've heard it said that "style" is a bit like one's handwriting. It evolves over time and ends up being recognisable as a personal signature. Even when following demonstration videos, I find there are elements about my version that are definitely my "signature".
Oliver Pyle is a great, but he has his own style. It's good to do studies of other artists' works. This is good for learning about composition especially. However, our brushstrokes are what will have a significant influence on our style, aa well as how we paint and what we paint.
Although I don't really want to imitate someome else's style, I can definitely learn a lot by trying to paint using their methods - sometimes, if they are not too complicated or advanced for my level.

That’s a really good way to like at it :)

I've always allowed it to be an organic process, letting my style express itself. I don't think I'd ever concern myself with being "stuck in a style".

That’s good :) I feel like it’s mostly stuck in my bad habits 😅

there is a saying that" you don't find your style , your style finds you "... I think that is so so true.. regardless of us wanting to find our own unique style, it's sort of like " looking for happiness"... if you take the steps, little by little , try new things, mediums, processes , etc, eventually the dust settles into your own unique style .. I think " brush mileage " is the absolute path to get to a unique style , but I don't think that style is a specific destination.. it's always evolving and changing .. I come from a lifetime of watercolor and pen and ink work, ( illustration background , as well) , and when I discovered gouache, about 6 years ago , I found myself painting in a completely different way, completely different style than I do with my watercolor work .. The medium will also affect your "style ", change it or open it up to new options and possibilities.. Not sure if my main point in all this is, except to say I think looking for your style is not the point.. it's like handwriting .. it will find you and you won't even realize it has lol so much to enjoy 😁😁Just paint often and paint a lot!!! it's the best path !! Yes I definitely agree that is not a destination and it’s not a constant :)

Amazing video. I never thought about having a stile until a friend pointed at. when I show her my sketchbook. I like that. It is ME!

Dear Antonio, I can truly say I have never heard such an honest, straightforward metacognitive analysis of one’s own painting evolution like the one in your video. It is just brilliant and kept me stuck to the TV, spellbound. It tapped on so many things that I tried to pass on to my students: process awareness, decision making, tacit knowledge (Polanyi) and what can be inferred from it, unconscious learning, which happens to be so much more powerful than regular learning.
It is not that what you portray is new, far from it, which is what makes it useful because so many of us can feel identified. It is the fact that it is sooo rare to listen to an artist who can analyse these very complex meanders of the mind and put them into words since, as you say, part of the development of one’s painting style depends on unconscious preferences and automated decisions. This is what makes your channel so distinct and recognizable. Thank you for that 😍

Awe thank you so much Maite! I’m glad that it was helpful :) you are right, none of the things that I say are “new” they are just my interpretation of the process I went through. I’m glad to hear that I am doing something right 😅 I’m not pretending to teach anyone, I’m just sharing my own experience
