I actually do appreciate the “they are committed life partners who transcend petty notions like marriage or dating”. I have two arospec life partners (and am starting so suspect myself of being on the spectrum as well), and it’s really nice to have representation of a relationship that isn’t defined by romance or sexuality, but just a deep commitment and love for each other. Sam and Max rule.
When you say "We're not gay" a thousand times and jokingly make two characters a couple over and over again for the entirety of an entire franchise, it starts to read like you're actually gay and just in denial. Like... the number of times the writers have made the two characters so incredibly gay for each other makes me genuinely shocked whenever I have to remember that the writers never meant for them to be actual queer icons. It is literally just that EASY to interpret their relationship as romantic because of how much the writers try to null it from the audience's, players', and viewers' minds.
What I love the most is that Sam and Maxe effectively have NO CANON (Events, stories, things that happened, things that didn't) except that they like each other and have a close relationship. You as a fan could literally make anything with them and wouldn't be out of reach as long as Sam and Max stay in character, the creator even says you can think and say about them "Whatever makes it funnier". So lets feel free to put them in any kind of dynamic without needing to justify or explain to anyone. People that argue "But they're not gay!!!" Or "They're gay and that's canon!!!" just dont get the TRULY unique piece of media Sam and Max truly is. PD: Awesome video, I like that you are well versed in their story and "lore", youve got a new subscriber.
I haven’t actually heard much criticism of the telltale games. They were my first real exposure to the characters and I fell in love with them through those games. But I also was in a very different place in my life when I played through them for the first time, so it’s possible I may not like them as much anymore. Still, it’s hard for me not to think of them as the definitive versions of the characters. I do like Freelance Police, but given how kid-friendly that series is, I always felt like it lacked the Bite I really like from Sam and Max. I’ve not read much of the comics or finished Hit the Road, so maybe my Sam and Max literacy is too limited. I would love to see a breakdown and deep critique of the Telltale games though.
i love them. The Strange Creatures also i dont have as quite as many issues with the telltale games as you do but its kinda nice to see someone else dunk on them cuz i think they honestly are overrated and not critiqued as much as they could be. The cartoon solos every other bit of s&m media
YAYYYYYY NEW SUPERMARY64 EPISODE THE WORLD IS BRIGHT AGAIN!!!!! I immediately rewatched your devil's playhouse analysis video after I finished playing the remaster it's such a comfort vid for me
Their like those 2 friends that are oddly close but your to awkward to ask if there dating or just really close friends…. and then you get invited to their wedding 10 years later
When asked whether Sam and Max were in love with one another, Steve Purcell answered “Like Butch and Sundance”. Y’know, two men who spent all their time with one another, may have died together, and both knowingly dated the same woman at the same time.
Toxic yaoi where no one else could literally handle a relationship with these two (they barely can) but each other is something that can be so personal and so special…
yay new supermary64 video!!!!! i agree about the telltale games having a lot more of those "no homo" type jokes than a lot of the other s&m media, but tbh those types of gay jokes are so present in the whole franchise that it's a big reason why we all see sam and max as gay in the first place. as much as i love the wedding moments between them in HTR and the cartoon, it's obvious they were written as a "haha two men getting married! laugh!!!!" joke which is lame. but like you said, it doesn't matter what the intentions were because we have interpreted them in our own way and i love that. also anecdote: i wear sam & max pins on my backpack, and one time a guy i was eating lunch with saw them and IMMEDIATELY asked me if sam and max were actually gay. so even non-fans see it lol
They just have amazing chemistry and care about each other so deeply that it's irreplaceable. But they're not gay because they don't define themselves as gay, like Achilles and Patroclies aren't gay because they didn't have that relationship dynamic in Ancient Greece. Clearly, they're Partners For Life.
Also, with both of them openly being attracted to other people, i think its because the freelance husbands have just been together for so long and friends for even longer that they don’t feel like their relationship is being threatened if one of them has a little crush on someone else. They both know they would always want to be together and i think thats just way cute 😢
Quick Summary of the video. Sam and Max's sexual orientation is a topic of debate because the original comics and adaptations don't clearly label them as gay or bisexual. Despite this, their close bond has led to various fan theories and discussions about their relationship. In a simple answer: its Unknown. To Certain Fans: Their gay. In my opinion, I say pick your own poison.
Okay now I’m curious, did their boom of popularity happen before or after the Telltale remasters? ‘Cause if the remasters were willed into existence because of gay people loving the silly gay animals, that’d be amazing ngl
I always thought it was extra funny because theres a few other cartoony pairings like this where you can sort of debate one way or other the nature of their relationship, but to have one of them be canonically gay via a running gag just really....slims the chances even more of the committed life partners who go everywhere and do everything together NOT being together 😂
What I think of your videos, despite not He's not having the best quality because the audio are some of my favorite videos on the internet. I can wait until I play season 3. I hope you have a great day and Really good video today
I dont particularly care whether or not they are or aren't a couple. I think they just work well together and are in some kind of relationship that goes beyond just friendship. Maybe platonic life parters would be a good word for it? Personally I like how weird and nebulously defined their relationship is. I think its far more interesting than them just being an outright couple. One thing, though, i get why you dont like some of maxes characterization in the Telltale games, but i dont see how it would be particularly out of character for him to say insesative and / or offensive things. It's pretty consistently shown through most of his appearances that he's almost completely lacking in empathy, impulse control, self-awareness, and also just general awareness. Neither of them are really shown to be particularly good people in both the comics and the first game. If anything, the cartoon is something of an outlier that somwhat tones back their casual propensity for cruelty. Basically, every depiction of them characterizes them slightly differently, but I'd still say the cartoon deviates most. Point being him being kinda insesative is pretty consistent with most of his other traits.
Just thinking about how they love each other brings such comfort to me, it is indeed very nice to just think about it. They'll forever be my favorite characters ever for that XD and they are very gay! 🤭 Also, if you don't mind me asking, which songs have you used in this video?
Could someone explain how telltale "made max misogynistic"? I've played through the games several times and there's nothing I see as being outwardly misogynistic. When it's explained that max doesn't like girls, Momma Bosco nearly calls him out as hating women but he responds with "no, just never interested" (Technically a spore) but he even calls Sam out for misogyny against Sybil during 305
(This is about to be horribly written because I’m winging it and English is not my foreign language, so bear with me :’)) I love this video. I wrote an analysis a while back about my theories on their relationship, and to summarize, this is what I think Sam’s deal/problem is: I feel like he was scared to openly admit the romantic side of his love for Max because he’s afraid to either (1) be shot down and flat out rejected by Max, only being seen as a best friend, or (2) is afraid that if he and Max DID get together, some stupid miscommunication or argument would end their 30-some year friendship and they’d fall out on bad terms; which he dreaded the the thought of because, y’know, not many relationships (whether platonic or romantic) last that long. Therefore, he went about trying to find other people to fill that ‘romantic’ aspect of his life, because Max is not a romantic, and Sam very clearly is written to be one within the franchise, particularly in the cartoon. Hence, the mention of former and (implied) current partners. I think that it got to the point where, no matter how many parters Sam had, he still felt unfulfilled, because none of them owned the qualities that he so cherished within Max. His ‘bond’ with those former/current partners were purely physical, because his emotional bonds lay within what he saw in Max. Subconsciously, he looked for Max in each of his partners, because no matter how much he attempted to mask his love to Max, he couldn’t bring himself to just completely disregard his feelings and it played into virtually everything he and Max did. I think it sums up to this: they are both emotionally unavailable, Max more than Sam. They both really love each other, but are horrible about clarifying in which WAY they love one another. I believe this is evident in 305, when past Max returns in the Time Machine and doesn’t know how to reciprocate Sam’s feelings on what had happened in Sam’s timeline regarding Max’s death. Whenever they ‘open up’ about their emotions, it’s play off as a joke, because they don’t know how to take their own feelings, let alone their counterpart’s, seriously, and that’s played a heavy role on as to why they’ve never established a relationship with one another. TLDR: they need couple’s therapy. Kiss and make up, boys. They are also demisexual methinks
'the creators didnt make them gay but we have' is honestly such a good summary of the whole situation and it goes so hard
