TLDR: put more thought into the Kaiden/Ashley debate it's interesting.
It's so crazy how much people hate whoever they leave on Virmire. The justification is never great, but the punishment is so intense (death sure but also hate, so much hate). Ashley enjoyers hate Kaiden, claim he's boring, dont like his voice actor, and claim he's too sexually forward (which... yeah, but so are Ashley and Liara, and sorry, but Liara is probably worse. It's like every line that comes out of her mouth. Kaiden is actually reluctant at first and only gets weird after the game tricked you into selecting the flirty options, Ash is similar). Then Ashley has a lot more apparent flaws (racist, pretensious, cold-hearted), but Kaiden enjoyers don't give her a chance to show the better sides of her. And then they both become the same character in ME2, so it doesn't even matter. The choice is so interesting and polarizes nearly everyone. Neither of them are even the worst character in the trilogy, but both of them get treated like it, and it's so incredibly fascinating to think about the rationales behind their choice and what that says about both them and gamers/people in general. If I ever make a video essay, it'll be on this exact thing because there's so much nuance that people overlook.
And if anyone says "he's just boring," honetly I find you kinda boring. Find a better reason to kill someone or at least elaborate further. Because that offers nothing to the conversation.
Kaiden is not satisfying as a character because his arc across the trilogy is small-scale and happens almost entirely off screen. His best character bit is in ME3, where he comes out as bisexual and that only happens in broshep playthroughs. He should have had more on-screen character moments and his coming out should be a bigger deal, but because he doesn't have that, I find him lackluster and choose Ashley, who has better defined character so that my game is overall more dynamic and interesting.
That right there is an actual way to say Kaiden is boring and makes justification for choosing Ashley that actually has thought.
And guess what, I don't even agree with it.
