Sis I feel you, as a fourth year, pre-med student nurse, I realized nursing is more on the side of what is the best patient care that a nurse can do in a specific subjectified manner. While medicine, it is what it is, as it is on the medical books. Very technical.

Step 1 questions are actually a lot longer and harder than the basic forms that were shown in the video.
But still, as a nurse, with a very very very broad perspective on diseases and medicine in itself? She did really well. I agree USMLE is very shookening. Considering that some Doctors look down upon nurses as hospital maids. Nursing as a job, especially in my country the Philippines is underrated. Considering that nurses make the hospitals their second home. While doctors only do a 5-10 minute rounds. I am a 4th year premed student nurse. And I have respect for these nurses.

I purely wanted to comment on the immense challenges physically and mentally from the USMLE step 1 that most medical students have to go through.
@@CrazyAsianDude And I'm sorry nurses aren't probably respected in the Philippines. In the U.S., despite major problems with healthcare, we navigate healthcare as a team of equals. I have a lot of respect for the nurses I work with and I'm constantly learning from them, especially if they have years of experience over me. We have our own expertise and we treat each other with respect, whether they're physician, front desk, nurse, social worker or the janitorial staffs.
The fact that you immediately assume what you did from what I said tells me that the toxic hierarchical environment of healthcare is still imminent in parts of the world and that makes me sad.

I’m so tired of this girl and her belittling the physician med school exams. She knows nobody uses board vitals, cause these are easy one-order questions that you will never see on USMLE. they are just easy recall types. A more accurate example is AMBOSS USMLE so you can see the difficulty, but she is too scared to do difficult type questions that are more representative so she chose an easy, baby level app that no one in med school uses.
Her bf is too nice for her. She is obsessed with appearing as something she isnt and she needs to belittle her bf to do so.
No wonder why all her followers are nurses and not physicians.

For the first question staph is not the most common cause of meningitis at any age. Strep pnumonea is the most common in adults and elderly N.meningitis is the most common cause in children and teenagers. group B strep is the most common in neonates (it used to by H.influenza but that has changed due to vaccination regimes). And listeria is common in immunocompromised. To get a staph in any infection is rare and mostly due to immunocompromised individuals and individuals who take IV drugs. But staph it is the most common cause of septic arthritis and osteomyelitis.
Yeah I was like all of the choices were indicative of meningitis except for staph lol. Got CMOPS, HAEMOP, and the other two were GEL (Group B, E.coli, Listeria) for meningitis. I didn’t even know staph causes meningitis.
He was probably thinking about epidural abscess- most common cause is staph

Oh this is great! I did 3 minutes of reading on Meningococcal today and I knew the answer to the first question right away :D The biggest give away was that the culture was taken from CSF. I'm only 4 weeks into my degree, feeling good right now, which is a nice change from crying.. lol

In patient one I knew it was A b/c his neck was sore. Shout out to Kevin for bringing up the DIC, as I just had a hematology exam last week and need that reminder. I just knew the patient was bleeding but didn't connect it to DIC.
I am a nurse I took 3 months to study for the test and that shit was soooo easy that I thought I failed

When I thought the nclex was rough, I took my critical care certification and it was probably the hardest test I’ve ever taken. Seeing these questions is giving me trauma 😅 Aw but kev talking about future kids. Maybe they follow in your footsteps and do healthcare too! 😊

This was honestly really insightful, it was bugging me the last couple days what breadth/depth of knowledge is different between doctors and nurses. Now I see those test questions and I'm like 😅 gotcha
From what I can see, nurses tend to have a more pragmatic set of knowledge. The doctors need to know a whole bunch in order to know what/how to properly diagnose and treat the actual health issue. And then the nurses know how to carry it out! I definitely can be wrong and am open to any correction :)
Sarah Christine 100% agree. There are doctors that have no idea how to use IV pumps and then there’s also me an new grad RN who doesn’t know how to do a lot of what doctors do lol!
I wouldn't base it on this. Step 1 is not very representative and although valid, these questions were pretty easy for Step 1. Step 2 CK more representative

@@sarahchristine6025 After having been through nursing school now, I understand this comment a lot better. The USMLE questions require the student to think with a diagnostic mindset. While there is science and patho for the nurse to have a grasp on in order to treat the manifestations of something and understand why they might be happening (high HR, pain, swelling etc.), the doctor has to narrow down what the condition actually is and order the appropriate treatments for that set of symptoms. Then as you said, the nurse carries the order out. These knowledges have to work hand in hand with each other.

@@itsmia5440 I'm from the Philippines and for you to get into Medical School you'll have to finish a 4-5 year PreMed course so that's anything with a Bachelors in Science degree. Nursing is a pretty common PreMed course here.

I am an RN and MD, have done both tests, so I am one of those that can speak with authority on this matter. I took both the Nightingale Pledge and the Hippocratic Oath. Honestly, the tests are not alike in any way. Nurses don't study medicine nor know or understand medical management. Nursing theory and nursing practice are quite different. Doctors don't study nursing nor know or understand nursing management. NCLEX is not nearly as highly developed as USMLE, for example "computer adaptive" exams were left behind by USMLE more than 10 years ago as it is demonstrated to decrease the validity of the exam. Obviously there is overlap because of the context. In addition, from a logic standpoint, nursing uses deductive reasoning, medicine uses inductive and abductive reasoning.
NCLEX is a single qualifying exam. To make a more fair comparison you would need to compare it to USMLE Step 1, 2, CS, and 3 together. But even that isn't quite fair.
NCLEX question number is max 265, pass that and you can practice nursing.
USMLE Step 1 is 280 questions, Step 2 CK is max 318 questions, Step 2 CS is H&P and note on 12 live simulated patients, Step 3 is 232 the fist day and 180 on the second day plus 13 computer case simulations (CCS). That's five days of testing, 1010 questions, and 25 cases. And after all that you are still not qualified to practice medicine!
Elimination is the poorest test strategy on USMLE by the way. No patient has a multiple choice list tattoo.
Both tests, NCLEX and USMLE, are designed for general qualification. Not understanding fetal hypoxemia is not "why we have specialists". That is simple and foundational for any nurse or medical student.
It's scary that you don't easily know and understand the answer to the first one. The labs relate directly to the physical presentation, in other words the rash and the DIC. Not knowing that is deadly. Guessing is deadly. Guessing is not getting it right.

In all seriousness, you do have a point, and in medicine, it’s crucial to have a deep understanding that is constantly being refreshed and updated to fit the wide variety of situations that one can encounter while working in the field. I wouldn’t have said it as aggressively as you did, but yeah, the mentality of, “I’ll study in med school then forget most of the stuff once I’m out,” is not a good one to have when lives are on the line.
Same with the guessing point. It’s a very “in the moment” way of looking at it. I understand that in reality it’s an exam, but promoting and saying that guessing is a huge part of these exams is pretty harmful considering the implications that could have once you’re actually practicing.
Very cool to see your input! I agree that it's crucial to just know in real world. I knew before the answer was shown that it was Nesseria, but I don't know his background. Maybe it's his first year as a medical student, and I certainly didn't really get it then. I didn't get the concept of DIC the way I do now. Everything just clicks when you are reviewing for Step 1

Victor Angel Join an EMS program and once you graduate from the program, work as an EMT or Paramedic however far you go and take your pre req courses for medical school.

Can only speak for Med/nursing students really and this is just anecdotal so lowest base of evidence. But from my experience as a 4th year medical student working alongside two nurse practitioner students there is definitley a gap in knowledge. In terms of pathophysiology and explaining why one medication is a better option than another class, Im better at that than the nursing students. That being said, Im a fish out of water sometimes when it comes to more practical knowledge. Unlike the nursing curriculum, us medical students dont get to do many blood draws, lumbar punctures, or procedures throughout our education. Their clinical knowledge although basic, is tempered in their countless hours of early clinical practice. Doctors do eventually outpace nurses and the knowledge gap becomes even larger, but again that happens much later as Residency tempers medical students into actual MDs.

This video is so great! I am a foreign MD, so I have studied for the USMLE, but at the end I decided to become a Certified Midwife (best decision ever btw!) and many of my classmates are nurses. It has been so great to learn the *real* differences between doctor vs nurse vs midwife. None is more/less than the other; they are DIFFERENT professions that overlap in knowledge.
3rd question looks more like from Step 2. I also thought the 1st one was B because I associate H. influenza with children.

I just got my STEP 1 results back a few hours ago (I passed!!) !!! My school only gave us one month to study for STEP since it was pass/fail this year and that month was the most stressful month of my life. Can't imagine having to take it when it was still scored

To be fair, physicians just order insulin. Never really pull it up. I'm an Internal medicine physician and I didn't know that they are pulled in the same syringe either.

@@lexil508 I know right. That's the reason these are 2 different professions I guess. I remember having a tough time drawing up meds during a mega code in ACLS training as a resident. Then again, I never really administered meds in real codes, just ordered them. It is very different and definitely challenging.
