+Ben Jet medallion doesn't change the cmc, only what you pay into the card. A card with X on the stack takes that into consideration for the cmc, so if he payed it right, he can make it odd or even (don't remember his rule) 202.3b When calculating the converted mana cost of an object with {X} in its mana cost, X is treated as 0 while the object is not on the stack, and X is treated as the number chosen for it while the object is on the stack. bit confused on what you mean, but i guess explanation for others if any.
(Jeremy) Hello everyone! This week, we're challenging ourselves by limiting our decks to only cards that are odd or even converted mana costs! Let us know what you think about this challenge, and as always, let us know what you'd like to see in the future.
collector's numbers? even or odd again or you all get a number they have to be divisible by that? (for example, snapcaster is 78 so if you've got 6 you can play it) also somebody wanna play Tomorrow? the last guy who was going to play it left before he could (that could be a theme, the Wes tribute episode!)
I love all these deck restriction videos. They're so much more fun for me and I get to see lots of unique commanders and cards that don't normally see much play. Keep them coming!
just wanna say to the whole commander crew. thank you so much. you are all amazing. you guys are something I look forward to watching every week and then binge watching during in between episodes and seasons.
play a bunch of legendaries in the same deck of all the same colors, at the beginning of the game reveal off the top until you hit one and play that as your commander
Man I hope you guys are back for next season (and many after). These vids (and any tour events with Pat and Ced commenting) are the best content SCG has....these are certainly the best commander content out there. Great vid guys
1:27:35 "if we get picked up for next season" Lets not pretend this isn't some of the best MTG content on youtube next to MtGGoldfish's vids and watching Paul Cheon's wife pick his drafts. If SCG doesn't keep this series going it'd be a huge mistake.
Damn, Jeremy, I was yelling at my phone "say no blocks! say no blocks!" If you let Justin kill you there, he loses a point for not casting his commander. With your 1st blood point you would have gotten 4pts to his 3 and gained ground.
I love the deck building restrictions and would like to see more of them. Also please come back for another season. All 4 of you are awesome and you make my Wednesday's infinitely better.
Recently at Emerald City Comic Con, I met David McDarby. He was awesome and told me that Justin was forced into commander because he was addicted to cube! 😂 But I can agree with you Justin, cube is pretty fun. Also, keep up the awesome work all you guys and people behind the scenes do!
Things I was reminded of today: Cathar's Crusade is stupid. Drawing a card for every creature on your field is stupid, Riku of Twin Reflections is stupid. I didn't need these reminders, but sometimes it's nice to look at something and learn to appreciate, yet again, how much of a threat they are.
Season long theme of actual singleton. You use a non-basic land card in a deck once that season, it's done for that player. If you guys want to dig deep into the annals of Magic history, there's a way to do it.
The most difficult cards to make work across all decks would most likely be non-basic lands, considering even many "staple" cards have a backup of sorts (Seedborn Muse being used instead of Prophet of Kruphix since the ban, etc.), particularly if a different colour identity and/or theme is played each week. Low power creature ETB shenanigans with Newzuri one week, B/W drain and gain with Athreos the next week, Goblin Tribal week three, Kydele/Smasher Eldrazi. Which is actually hilarious when one draws a bunch, taps Kydele to produce that much mana, and then drops an Eldrazi titan to deal 10+ to someone's face, so I'd love to see this played at some point anyway. Plus maybe in that deck a Void Winnower would hit the battlefield, who knows. Great episode though and it's a challenge I might try imposing on myself at some point to forcibly lower a deck's optimization in more casual matches.
a challenge you all played last year was vs the Horde and I liked watching it - maybe instead of zombies you could make a Goblin Horde deck and see how the group fairs against them
I love watching this every week. Suarez comes up with some crazy deck ideas. I would love to see Suarez play Uril the miststalker, Parnell play Kaervek the merciless, Green play Iroas ( since he loves red), and Noell play Jenara. I think it would make a good game.
Wouldn't Jeremy etb triggers on token spawn and the crusade happen at the same time so he could stack it so tokens enter before crusade +1/+1 counters resolve?
Hey guys love the Commander series. I am curious if you plan to do an episode with generals that have involved with or are connected to the Planeswalker Nicol Bolas?
How about teams for the in between seasons episode, the commanders are kozilek and ulamog, both old and new. Neither team mate can share cards (except basics) and all five colors are available.
As of new challenges: A deck may not contain (pick one) - Artifacts - Legendary cards (except for the commander) - (non-)basic lands (depending on which is more viable) - Token generators I am not sure how viable these all are, but they seem like a good way to show some creativity to me.
Consider, for a theme; decks built around the Epic cycle from Saviors of Kamigawa. The decks would be intended to ensure their epic spell gets cast, and then supported - so for Endless Swarm, maybe you play Kaseto to pump up the snakes and make them unblockable, providing a mana sink, or maybe simic Ezuri to give ever-larger buffs. The blue one might use Jhoira, to get suspend benefits... There's a bunch of ways they could be done, they could even just be monocolour decks. But I think it'd make a great theme for a week if you each built around one of the Epic cards.
Hey guys, great video again. I love the way you play. My friends and I love multiplayer magic and currently we are mostly playing a multiplayer cube my buddy created. Maybe that'd be something for you as well? So how about mixing it up a bit by drafting a cube and choosing your commander for it afterwards? Sure the decks would probably be a bit smaller but unless Justin gets milled it shouldn't matter that much :).
Why couldn't Jon cast his exsanguinate? Cost reduction effects can't stop you from hitting a certain number on X. You declare you are casting the spell where x=8 then you pay the costs.
Squirrel Nest... ahh the memories.. *pauses at **8:05* story time kids. so i was drafting Conspiracy along with a bunch of buddies and also Gatecrash... well i ran a G/U deck with 3 Squirrel Nest and 1 Giant Adephage, along with Vorel of the Hull Clade, and Nimbus Swimmer, and other token stuff and counter stuff... i ended up winning a 7 person free for all because of how many Squirrels and Adephage tokens i had on my board. Stuck with G/U ever since
i see lots of people saying the exsanguinate could have been played, and lots saying it could not... which is it, im pretty sure the jet medallion essentially pays for 1 manna, not actually changing what the value possibly can be, didnt john just need the value to be even, meaning he pays 2 black for the base, and then pays 3 mana, and the jet plays 1, coming out to a total X of 6, which is still even, and if the X is not what matter and rather the amount John payed is what matters, then he can just pay one less, or one more, UNLESS, both of those things matter, please explain
Haha, that Chalice bluff was awesome! Edit: Trostani's summoner and cathar's crusade both are ETB triggers, so Jeremy could have stacked it so his tokens got 4 counters as well!
Sweet game though! Love me some Shamanic Revelation, and this episode certainly delivered. Though I am #TeamParnell I can't be mad at Stephen for wanting to play Karma. That is one sweet Opeth song :D
I don't get why Jon can't cast Exsanguinate... why not just cast it for 1 lower so it's in the rules. @_@ Either the Jet Medallion counts or it doesn't, right?
So, both Commander VS and It's Always Sunny are coming to their season end?!?! Looks like I'll be watching older episodes over again from week to week.....
You miss my point. Justin can only odd costed spells this game. Getting any creature in his deck with Chord of Calling, which is XGGG, is going to be an even costed spell, going against the rule of casting even numbered costing spells for him and Jeremy.
Haha, that was absolutely great. I love when things get out of hand. I would've been actually sad, though, if Void Winnower hit... I feel like if my group tried this, we'd ban Void Winnower.
Idea for an episode: everyone has to play a non-krenko goblin legend. Generals like Slobad, Wort the Raidmother, Kiki Jiki, Wort Boggart Auntie, etc. it would be interesting to see different spins on a tribe that always seems really linear
Every game usually consists of Justin saying "Oh man his board is really bad don't look at me making a board twice as worse!" and then him dominating the game. I'm waiting for the day when everyone catches on and finally fights public enemy number one.
You know what would be a fun theme? D&D classes. Each of you has to build a deck based around one of the four classical role playing classes: warrior, mage, healer, and rogue. It would be interesting, but you guys could make it work.
Season 7 needs to have the introduction of a new member of the team, The Commander VS Judge. This series has a very large impact for players, new and used to the game, and needs to make sure that plays are valid and rules are kept in place. Side note: You should play more competitive decks, a nothing is banned week, and/or you have to play the number of colors for what place you are in for the season.
I would like to see this group play an extreme form of pauper commander. where even your commander has to be a common (but it obviously doesn't have to be a legendary creature).
Mr Carciofo Verdura "Shamanic Revelation", he draws a card for each creature he controls and gains four life for each creature with power four or greater.
A token copy of an existing creature has a CMC equal to the CMC of the creature it copied. Tokens that are gained that are not copies of things have a CMC of 0.
I would like to see a deck building challenge where like commander keywords or abilities have to used in the creatures they play. Like Zurgo Helmsmasher would only play creatures with like haste and indestructible and his +1 counter ability. Rules bent a little bit for how close the abilities are but so that the Commander is actually leading the troops.
Jeremy couldve killed both Steven and Suarez in the same turn no? If he just also attacked with the bees with the counters. He still had 1/1 bees left to block Justin with. Also did Justin not draw a single ramp spell with those 20+ cards he drew? Any ramp spell wouldve increased all his tokens by 2. He could've won right there.
Suarez should have been able to cast Exsanguinate for X equalling an even number, either that, or Jet medallion should make him entirely unable to cast black spells
Exsanguinate should have been able to cast because you announce X then pay, because otherwise sphere of resistance makes all spells uncastable which makes no sense
I can't imagine that SCG wouldn't pick this show up for as long as yall are up for making it. it's literally the last reason I'm subscribed to SCGs channel and I'm sure it's the same for some others.
Thorsten Böhme Yeah i think my post was slightly mistyped. i should have said that commander vs is the final thing that SCG has that keeps me subscribed now that they got rid of BBD and CVM
Can someone explain how is Justin gonna cast Chord of Calling? He has to cast it for a odd cmc (3, X=0; 5, X=2; 7, X=4). This way, he can only tutor for a even CMC creature which he can't have in his deck.
So why didn't Justin play the wood elves he drew. Like all his plants would have been 6/7. Them alone was 96 damage. If he could only block 10 then that's still 36 and then Jeremy creatures would have killed him. Or all in attack from Justin would have done it.
Justin couldve got a copy of either Hornet Queen or Atarka from Riku after the Eldrich Evo because its when a non-token creature ETB not on cast. more hornets!!
I was more enthralled by the various shapes that Stephen was putting those dice in then the game by the end of that.
The arts!!!
Jon could still cast exsanguinate, when you cast an x mana cost spell you announce what x is so the the jet medallion wouldn't matter.
Jay Wojciechowski that take back tilted me. prevented a 30 life gain spell. xD
I felt physically ill after that take-back
+Ben Jet medallion doesn't change the cmc, only what you pay into the card. A card with X on the stack takes that into consideration for the cmc, so if he payed it right, he can make it odd or even (don't remember his rule)
202.3b When calculating the converted mana cost of an object with {X} in its mana cost, X is treated as 0 while the object is not on the stack, and X is treated as the number chosen for it while the object is on the stack.
bit confused on what you mean, but i guess explanation for others if any.
(Jeremy) Hello everyone! This week, we're challenging ourselves by limiting our decks to only cards that are odd or even converted mana costs! Let us know what you think about this challenge, and as always, let us know what you'd like to see in the future.
The Alphabattle:
Each player randomly chooses 4 letters (excluding Q, X, Y, Z) and only plays cards that start with the letters they have.
A new Challenger appears!
Only cards that have not yet been in decks played in the series.
collector's numbers? even or odd again or you all get a number they have to be divisible by that? (for example, snapcaster is 78 so if you've got 6 you can play it)
also somebody wanna play Tomorrow? the last guy who was going to play it left before he could (that could be a theme, the Wes tribute episode!)
"cards that only start with a certain letter" limitation.
Happy The Cat also snaps is from innistrad and 78÷6=13 which is awesome.
Trostanis Summoners tokens would have gotten 4 counters as well....simple stacking
Only if he would stacked it otherwise, but he let him being talked into the false order.
same with hornet queen
Konfiusion thanks for clearing that up, was gonna ask that in the comments!
Just started watching........first card that comes to mind for the "odd" decks - Void Winnower?^^
Man I hope you guys are back for next season (and many after). These vids (and any tour events with Pat and Ced commenting) are the best content SCG has....these are certainly the best commander content out there. Great vid guys
Love this series, I might have seen every episode now since they pop up in my video feed so often. Please keep this series going!
1:27:35 "if we get picked up for next season"
Lets not pretend this isn't some of the best MTG content on youtube next to MtGGoldfish's vids and watching Paul Cheon's wife pick his drafts. If SCG doesn't keep this series going it'd be a huge mistake.
This series is the video I look forward too all week. They are legit my favorite!
Please tell me someone played void winnower
First think that came to my mind. :D
same hahaha
Yup.
Lukas.Ericsson I was just about to say this too lol.
oh man engineered explosives would be pretty good.....
Damn, Jeremy, I was yelling at my phone "say no blocks! say no blocks!"
If you let Justin kill you there, he loses a point for not casting his commander. With your 1st blood point you would have gotten 4pts to his 3 and gained ground.
Makes sense and is entirely reasonable.
I love the deck building restrictions and would like to see more of them. Also please come back for another season. All 4 of you are awesome and you make my Wednesday's infinitely better.
Why couldn't Jon cast the Exsanguinate? The medallion doesn't change converted mana cost.
I thought I was missing another stipulation. The best part is, that Jon earlier in the video explains the medallion himself.
I will continue to love the sunny quotes everytime y'all say them.

I didn't need these reminders, but sometimes it's nice to look at something and learn to appreciate, yet again, how much of a threat they are.
It was really fun guys from Quebec I follow you and I really like the commander format.
Season long theme of actual singleton. You use a non-basic land card in a deck once that season, it's done for that player. If you guys want to dig deep into the annals of Magic history, there's a way to do it.
(Jeremy) It'd get really tough by episode 5-6, but that sounds like a fun deck building challenge.
The most difficult cards to make work across all decks would most likely be non-basic lands, considering even many "staple" cards have a backup of sorts (Seedborn Muse being used instead of Prophet of Kruphix since the ban, etc.), particularly if a different colour identity and/or theme is played each week.

Plus maybe in that deck a Void Winnower would hit the battlefield, who knows.
Great episode though and it's a challenge I might try imposing on myself at some point to forcibly lower a deck's optimization in more casual matches.
I really hope this series continues. It's so funny and good.
Out of the park vid! Great match. Had me rolling with the brilliance of this one. Team Gold!!
It's the old "let Justin do his thing and dominate late game" #teamwes
#teamwes !
What card does Jonathon reveal at 1:01:15 that could have killed JP?
42:51 How did Jon cast Kozilek when it costs 2 colourless?
a challenge you all played last year was vs the Horde and I liked watching it - maybe instead of zombies you could make a Goblin Horde deck and see how the group fairs against them
I love watching this every week. Suarez comes up with some crazy deck ideas. I would love to see Suarez play Uril the miststalker, Parnell play Kaervek the merciless, Green play Iroas ( since he loves red), and Noell play Jenara. I think it would make a good game.
So, the ultimate question. Does Steven Green have Rogue's Passage in that deck?
Wouldn't Jeremy etb triggers on token spawn and the crusade happen at the same time so he could stack it so tokens enter before crusade +1/+1 counters resolve?
Jeremy, you have convinced me to consider making a Rhys deck. Looks pretty stable.
"mill has nothing to do with rogues at all"
stephen green out here knowing the future
Cathars Crusader gives 5 counters to all the tokens and hornet queen herself if you stack the trigger under hornet Queens etb.
Did anyone else notice Stephen making eyes with the dice, from 1:03:30 to 1:04:24
This is a really cool deck building stipulation
Oh snap Stephen is playing Rogue Tribal. I made that exact deck like 2 years ago and I love it!
44:55 That muldrifter is a token and tokens have no cmc. He could go zero plus two for the eldirtch evolution, but not for 7 like they're doing here.
CodemanB2 nope. its a copy, it copies the cmc too, i reckon
Hey guys love the Commander series. I am curious if you plan to do an episode with generals that have involved with or are connected to the Planeswalker Nicol Bolas?
please play more meren justin it looks so good and it looks so satisfying just getting back all the creatues
How about teams for the in between seasons episode, the commanders are kozilek and ulamog, both old and new. Neither team mate can share cards (except basics) and all five colors are available.
I would suggest either old vs new or ulamog vs kozilek.
As of new challenges:
A deck may not contain (pick one)
- Artifacts
- Legendary cards (except for the commander)
- (non-)basic lands (depending on which is more viable)
- Token generators
I am not sure how viable these all are, but they seem like a good way to show some creativity to me.
There's a bunch of ways they could be done, they could even just be monocolour decks. But I think it'd make a great theme for a week if you each built around one of the Epic cards.
All the token from the summoner can have 4 counters if you stack the triggers right, but it is possible to put only three on the token.
Why couldn't Jon cast his exsanguinate? Cost reduction effects can't stop you from hitting a certain number on X. You declare you are casting the spell where x=8 then you pay the costs.
Stephen is so watchable, I lost track of the game as soon as he started fiddling with the dice
Stuck with G/U ever since
Always the best videos on TH-cam
Voltron commanders!!!!Steven - Derevi, Empyrial TactitianJohn - Wydwen, the Butin GaleJeremy - Uril, the MiststakerJustin - Jenera, Adura of War
time for a comeback @stephengreen
I adore how much value revelation got this game. Such an underplayed card.
i see lots of people saying the exsanguinate could have been played, and lots saying it could not... which is it, im pretty sure the jet medallion essentially pays for 1 manna, not actually changing what the value possibly can be, didnt john just need the value to be even, meaning he pays 2 black for the base, and then pays 3 mana, and the jet plays 1, coming out to a total X of 6, which is still even, and if the X is not what matter and rather the amount John payed is what matters, then he can just pay one less, or one more, UNLESS, both of those things matter, please explain

I think he just had second thoughts about taking someone out so early in the game and threw out that as an excuse.
At 34:00 Justin cheats by drawing 5 cards instead of 4, accidentally dropping one during his 4th draw and putting it to hand.
So, both Commander VS and It's Always Sunny are coming to their season end?!?! Looks like I'll be watching older episodes over again from week to week.....
You and me both.
why not attack with the 5/5 hornets too, the turn he finishes Stephen?
37:00 When it looks like you could kill everyone at once
How can Justin search Atarka and Hornet Queen with Eldritch Evolution sacrificing a token?
Sascha Winter the token was a mulldrifter CMC=5
The token was a copy, which copied an actual creature, which means it copies the CMC as well.
Oh, my bad. I should pay more attention while watching :) ... thanks guys
Deckbuilding challenges like this are more entertaining since it makes you have deeper cuts.
Why did Justin add chord of calling?! 3 plus any Odd number (for odd number creatures) is always even...
You can get cheaper creatures with it. So it essentially costs X1GGG.
You miss my point. Justin can only odd costed spells this game. Getting any creature in his deck with Chord of Calling, which is XGGG, is going to be an even costed spell, going against the rule of casting even numbered costing spells for him and Jeremy.
Oh wait, he'll have to cast it for x=4 in order to get a 3 cvc creature. I got it now.
Stack the abilities right from Tristani's summoner and cathadar's crucade and the tokens also get 4 +1/+1 counters.
those boots were made for walking, I remember that from season one haha, good times
Haha, that was absolutely great. I love when things get out of hand. I would've been actually sad, though, if Void Winnower hit... I feel like if my group tried this, we'd ban Void Winnower.
Idea for an episode: everyone has to play a non-krenko goblin legend. Generals like Slobad, Wort the Raidmother, Kiki Jiki, Wort Boggart Auntie, etc. it would be interesting to see different spins on a tribe that always seems really linear
lol, as of right now watching this video Jeremy and I are both wearing the same shirt.
Did yall play void winnower?
Every game usually consists of Justin saying "Oh man his board is really bad don't look at me making a board twice as worse!" and then him dominating the game. I'm waiting for the day when everyone catches on and finally fights public enemy number one.
You know what would be a fun theme? D&D classes. Each of you has to build a deck based around one of the four classical role playing classes: warrior, mage, healer, and rogue. It would be interesting, but you guys could make it work.
I'm still waiting on planechase commander from these guys... that'd be an adventure.
Stephen better be playing a Royal Decree with that Karma.
No decklists?
In surprised there was no cheeky trinisphere
Justin, how sweet does revenge taste?
28 + 12 does not equal 48. Or did I miss something?
Kozilek casted without wrasted mana ?
I wanna see Jeremy play a Gisela, Blade of Goldnight deck! Please make it happen guys!
I would like to see this group play an extreme form of pauper commander. where even your commander has to be a common (but it obviously doesn't have to be a legendary creature).
more like... st-even green... Okay, ill stop
someone explain me why justin gained all that life at 1:04:00
Mr Carciofo Verdura "Shamanic Revelation", he draws a card for each creature he controls and gains four life for each creature with power four or greater.
Orkan69 but he hadn't any 4/4 or more
Mr Carciofo Verdura he had 19 creatures with power 4 or greater, the 16 tokens with 4 +1/+1 counters, Atarka and 2 Avenger of Zendikar.
I thought a token`s cmc was always 0, and Justin used eldritch evolution on a token. Am I missing something ?
A token copy of an existing creature has a CMC equal to the CMC of the creature it copied. Tokens that are gained that are not copies of things have a CMC of 0.
Thanks, i didn't knew that
In the future, I think saves should award points for multiple saves, but ONLY if the savior or saved wins.
i think jeremy got 2 lands in play off of cultivate, unless im seeing it wrong.
You guys should do a cmc challenge where everyone's curb stops at 3 or something. 3 may not be the best number but you get my drift
Justin...y u play a land BEFORE drawing cards!? D:
Jeremy couldve killed both Steven and Suarez in the same turn no? If he just also attacked with the bees with the counters. He still had 1/1 bees left to block Justin with. Also did Justin not draw a single ramp spell with those 20+ cards he drew? Any ramp spell wouldve increased all his tokens by 2. He could've won right there.
Everyone is talking about Void Winnower, but Ashling's Prerogative would have also been a very useful card.
Saurez threw that game right out the window. John could have definitely shifted volrath, used ever after, and then the ability again. Saurez!!!!!
Michael Dowdy it's not the last thing i am subscribed for, but rather the only thing i subscribed for in the first place :)
Thorsten Böhme Yeah i think my post was slightly mistyped. i should have said that commander vs is the final thing that SCG has that keeps me subscribed now that they got rid of BBD and CVM
Jeremy should play thraximundar
He was my first commander. I built a Zombie Tribal with a bit of death shenanigans.
Could someone please play Karlov of the Ghost Council
why Justin wait to krosan grip Jeremy crusade. He let Jermy get out of hand.
Can someone explain how is Justin gonna cast Chord of Calling? He has to cast it for a odd cmc (3, X=0; 5, X=2; 7, X=4). This way, he can only tutor for a even CMC creature which he can't have in his deck.
You can overpay for Chord.
Oh yeah, but that's lame :/
So why didn't Justin play the wood elves he drew. Like all his plants would have been 6/7. Them alone was 96 damage. If he could only block 10 then that's still 36 and then Jeremy creatures would have killed him. Or all in attack from Justin would have done it.
Rhys's second ability is an even cost, why was jeremy allowed to do that?
Justin couldve got a copy of either Hornet Queen or Atarka from Riku after the Eldrich Evo because its when a non-token creature ETB not on cast. more hornets!!
