I made a number of errors coupled with bad luck. This was not the outcome I had hoped for and practiced for but the good news is that I'm still alive in the tournament. So I will work hard and hopefully we see a better performance in round 4!
I share some strategic thoughts for the game of Risk: Global Domination.

IKR?!?!?! I had literally never heard of Pete and haven't played Risk (or even thought of it) in YEARS but Round 1 of this tournament randomly showed up on my home page last night and I can't explain exactly why I clicked on it but needless to say I've pulled an all-nighter binging this tournament and I know this is just the tip of the iceberg. Can't wait to explore this page further. Thank god my day off is tomorrow 😂 (or, at this point, today lmao)

I understand your feelings, Pete. It is so fucking upset when people took revenge on each other and they ignored the fact that some guys just gained 20-40 troops per turn!
I was really trying this season and I knew that the settings were very heavily dependent on the spawn. As soon as the pink played put all their troops in behind me I knew my game was fucked. But oh well. You still have to play to your outs. I don't know what I could have done differently in this situation.
@@TheKillPeteStrategy I would've tried to move that 10 stack through white to attack Orange and maybe show White that you could be useful to keep around for a bit.

I don't know how this tournament was structured exactly, but it's theoretically kind of interesting deciding who to take out first. Who ever you take out first gets less points in the tournament overall, so if you're trying to make sure your overall placement is higher, it's better to take out people near your place on the leaderboard first.
I usually take the opposite approach. At least in the early rounds. Long term if a player is my friend that will be worth more to me than an enemy. And since it's a ffa game it isn't always me vs everyone else but often us vs them.
Brutal round also I feel like white easily could have taken both bounties, but hey kill Pete strategy in full effect I guess

It was just in white's power to decide who gets which position.
The only thing you guys could do is to win his favour by making it easier/faster for him.
Apparently white decides that pink gets 2nd because he was attacked hard early on. And that you get 5th because you were far behind the others the entire game and didn't deserve more points.
@@maxmustermann3876 not exactly. UTG killed me when he did because he saw that I had the potential to take a bounty from him which would have cost him points. His concern was maximizing points for himself not necessarily putting any specific player in a certain position.

He can achieve that without being forced to a specific order of killing.
His lead was so overwhelming, he could easily split you guys up and shrink your troops down, so that you can't eliminate each other any more. Or block someone in a corner. Or just kill the player, which you maybe could take out, instead.
It's purely on white in the end, which makes this type of game mode (with different amount of points being giving for players who equally failed this match) totally unsportsmanlike imo.
You played well Pete given the spawn you had. I got 5th in my game too with no cards on 4. Knew as soon as the game started I was playing not to die first, not a fan of the settings. Well done for progressing though. I wish you better luck in the next rounds.

I know it must suck to lose because of shitty dice and bad starting position but being new to these types of videos and having watched only the previous two in this series.... This video is much more entertaining and I must admit I took just a little pleasure seeing you stressing after the last two rounds were so much slower

20:30 that orange white midpoint is literally the halfway of the map. The choke point because of the glaciers. You won the first two rounds. So I have faith.

I don't know much about risk, but it seems a bit shit for a tournament to use a map where the starting position dictates so much of who can realistically win, the outcome or the placement doesn't seem to be impacted much by any players skill level (to an extent).
I thought these were lousy settings too

These luck based settings are pretty bad, Cowboy rated them a 6-6.5/10. You can't win them all 😭
These settings fail in my books. Less than 5/10. I assume the goal was for them to act as a filter so having a really lucky round where many players hit a brick wall might have been intentional.

In the interest of getting better at risk, I want to ask, If you were Pete, how would you play this differently? Would you simply not risk the 93% chance of winning the blitz?
For me, I think the conquest cost for the circle was 11( 7 foreign troops + 4 territories) while the conquest cost for the "M" continent was 13f+9t= 21. Would it not have been better to take the circle first?
I think the winning opening move would have been to stack the 5 troops in the 3 above for an 8 and take 2 easy 1 foreign territories and fortify to the circle so as to hold a bonus for sure in 2-3 turns. Thoughts?

@@TheKillPeteStrategy I don't know, sometimes you play the best strategy and still lose, that's just the nature of randomness in games. It feels bad when it happens, but as long as it doesn't play as much of a factor in the game as actual strategic skill, the game is still in a fine place.
Can someone explain why white only lost 4 troops and red lost 10 at 24:30? Like what kind of crap is that?

Vicaraoth shouldn’t have gotten 4th, he kept pushing into under the gun, but I think under the gun did it from a points perspective. You’ve got the lead by 2 points, even if you got fourth, it’s still too close to be a clearer victor in the tournament.

What's the reasoning behind leaving huge buffers of 1s and stacking up your troops in the center of your territory? I'd think you'd want to do the opposite.
The stacks are best used to make kills and take the run to capture territory when they're large enough.
@@TheKillPeteStrategy I can see how one large stack is better for sweeping territories than several medium-sized stacks, but why don't you put the large stack on your front lines? Why is the optimal move to keep it behind a layer of 1-stacks?

Spreading troops to survive was such a bad move. Von was not going to attack into a 15 or whatever. Really slowed you down to do that.

I asked UTG after the game about why he played the way he did and he explained it as a way to maximize his own points because he saw I was lining up to take that bounty and he was right. So in that way I couldn't be mad since he was playing his own game to win, it just happened to hurt mine, and fair enough. That happens
