I love this video so freaking much. You are sharing the challenges I'm running in to and some great solutions. Right now, I'm feeling 9:25 pretty hard. THIS should be the official PetSafe installation video.
I like these kinds of videos instead of the official ones because a lot of these projects end up being much more involved than the manufacturer would have you believe.
Plus, they show you not only likely mistakes, but potential workarounds. BTW, over half of the time spent on my projects is spent wandering around the big box store. They eventually put a cot in the corner for me so I could take a nap.
Ty and your wife so much I just bought one just like yours on market place for 25$ still in the box! I'm and old lady and this video really helped me get a visual for what to expect AND idk bout the extenders that alone to know for me was pure gold I love yaw!
Dude 8 years later, I found your video and love how you show all the little hiccups and how it’s not just throw the door in and Bam! Getting one on offer up and just hoping it is similar to your!
I'm in the process of doing this now (or trying to) and absolutely LOVE the fact that you didn't edit out the screw-ups. Doesn't make me feel so totally inept! Now, you just need to show me how to get rid of that air space at the bottom of the door, which I also have. Groan.
Yeah, kudos for keeping the story complete. It feels so real with the included hardware that’s not good enough, with the wrong side first, and last but not least the power tools that look like what the average homeowner would have on hand. Thanks, dude. You are the man!
When I got to 9 minutes and 24 seconds in the video and saw your response I laughed until I had tears. Your response is so me. Thanks for creating this video. I feel your pain.
From six years later - thanks! I just bought the current version of this same door and the directions are not great. Honestly, seeing you go through - and figure out - the same issues I was trying to figure out really helped. FYI for everyone, the current lock they have is more secure, but won't work for all doors. I wound up buying a lock like the one seen in this video. Also, the weather stripping will be an absolute must, and is NOT included. Unless your sliding door has weather stripping already on it, it will never seal against the dog door, no matter how well you line them up.
Did the install with minimal fuss thanks to watching this video. Thanks a million. I wound up doubling up on weather stripping where the doors meet because some screws on the sliding door protrude in bad places. Eventually got a clean seal.
Good video. Showing mistakes and the process to correct is how they should be done. I especially liked the “bleeped” out part to demonstrate the frustration because that’s what I do all the time.
My husband is installing the sliding doggy door, I had to beg him to watch video of someone else installing door. He thinks just because he is an engineer he knows it all. Well, four hours have past still not done installing because major problem like you had air coming through when it's time to close door. I truly enjoyed watching you install the door because you confess your mistakes publically where my husband has too much pride to say he can't fix the problem. You are so humble which is a good thing! What a lucky wife you have. My husband said, " The manufacturer has a big design problem." Thanks for making me laugh watching your video. Your video did help us because it confirmed that it is a manufacturer design error.
Thank you for showing the opportunities for correction as well as the final product. Helps me to know what to look for first to avoid the same issues! Great video. Thank you.
I LOVE this video! Thank you so much for leaving the mess-ups and showing what you did to correct them. I just bought the same door and I am getting ready to TRY to install it. I am worried about drilling through the door frame and I am not sure what to do about a lock. This was very helpful!! Thanks!
Thank you very much for your video - I was starting to install the pet door this morning, using the mfg video. Eventually put the door away as I wasn't sure what to do next. Thought i was going to have to stay home tomorrow to finish the project. Then I found your "trials and tribulations" video and I was able to install it in no time! Many, many thanks!
I got a similar door and im taking my break now because im having a hard time installing. So thank you for this video. The bleeping part was fantastic because im feeling the struggle!!!! Ok i think i have a better idea what to adjust. Let me get back to it. Great video
This video was more imformative than the manufacturer's video. It helped us immensely as we put it our panel. Knowing what to expect and how to correct them enabled us to install in about an hour's time. Thank you so much. And Maverick is such a cutie, it was fun watching him as well.
I really enjoyed your video. I appreciate how you showed your mistakes and where you had to improvise. I'm getting one and I'll have your video on screen when I do this. Again, thank you for an honest installation video!
Between this video and the official video I was able to install this door. Just make sure to have the required tools such as a drill, the drill bits, the philips head skrew for the drill because you wont be turning the skrew in this metal by hand. Also, make sure when your doing the 9/16 through the frame don't go through the door. It is used as a guide. Thank you for the video.
i enjoyed watching you install the door. you are lucky having a helpful wife to assist you. my wife would be yelling calling me stupid, so you are very lucky
Much appreciated for the video! It helped my installation go smoothly. To fix that gap at the bottom of the door I fastened some wooden wedges that were a few inches long. They provided enough lift to the door to correct the gap
This video came at the perfect time. I started looking at the same doggie door for my patio yesterday. Now I know what to look for and what to expect. Thanks!
smittyas00 Haha ah man! That's awesome! Yeah it seriously would be a super simple install, it was just a pain trying to figure everything out on the fly. I'm also clearly no handyman haha. Hope the video helps!
Great video! You had such a great attitude when it wasn't going as expected. I think you have saved us much headache - going to try & install today. Thanks so much!
I just installed one of these today..I watched 3 different vids from the manufacturer and the way you installed that was in no way shape or form how the manufacturer wants it installed I'm sitting here watching your video laughing my ass off I'm glad you got it to work cuz that damn thing was a pain in the ass to put in!
I tried for about 30 mins on a cold day and was noticing so many of the same issues I needed to troubleshoot before attempting again. So thankful for you showing in such detail the problems and solutions. I feel confident now I can get it installed tomorrow thanks to you! Amazing video keep up the great work!
Thanks for this video, the trial & error is A+, ha. It was nice to see all the problems you ran into so I can prepare myself. We are going to be installing this pet door very soon! Awesome attitude & glad you didn’t let it get the best of you!
Hahaha! That was so perfect. Looked this up because my husband is about to install we laughed because this sounded just like our projects! Thanks for sharing!
I just got this in today, And I will review your video a couple more times before I get started. Thanks for making all the mistakes for me. Seriously, your project looks like a lot of mine but we get her done finally somehow someway
Thank you so much for doing this video. I am going to install one of these today at my sister's house. The PetLife video installation looked so easy, which I know these projects never are. So I watched your video so I would know what the the real installation would entail. This video was very helpful. I am certain I will be swearing throughout this project!
Wow i was looking at videos to figure out a doggy door for a sliding glass and, what the heck so you know, it's someone i know making this video!!! Very cool! Good to see you again!
Way to be honest. I’ve had many projects that went this route. The main thing is you got it done and are still smiling about it! Have to admit you gave me some laughs though.
Thank you so much for doing this video and all the ways that it "doesn't" go smoothly according to the professional installation videos. I have been researching for months to try to find the "right one" and not sure there is one out there unless you cut a hole in your sliding glass door for $700 + and who wants to do that. Everything that you went through is probably going to be my story. I just got the door the other day and is very daunting. I can't even get the old door jamb off to put the door close to the frame.. It is very frustrating and I don't want to put alot of holes in the door to secure it so hopefully I will get the drilling thing down. But thank you for showing all the difficulties with the installation! You, your wife and Maverick are real troopers!
Okay I’m glad this included all the trouble shooting because those are the exact same mistakes I would have made and not known how to fix 😆 thanks for the video!
Also, I’m sure you guys fixed the gap in between the door already but in case anyone else is wondering there’s usually 2 screws at the bottom of both sides of sliding glass doors. The lower screws adjusts the wheel height which will close that gap. Luckily it was a super easy fix cuz I had that problem too :P
Great video! I am in Florida so I think I’ll need twice as much weather stripping 🤣 love how you kept the mistakes so we learn from them. Thank you and Kudos to you 💯 🙏
I love that y'all didn't cut out all the mistakes. If it would have been a "perfect" installation I would have made all of these mistakes and would have done the super cursing spell too. LOL
Great video, thanks for posting. We will be attempting this installation ourselves at the weekend so its super to see your demo. Well done on staying so cool when you hit problems, I would have thrown the thing out in a Basil Fawlty style tantrum I think!
Thank you for sharing! I’m installing one of these right now and having a heck of a time! But you already answered the first question. I have to remove the cardboard filler to get the top piece to move. I thought it was supposed to offer some kind of insulation property and slide down inside. Nope! I’m going to remove it right now! I wish the instructions mentioned removing the cardboard!
Thank you for the video. It gave me some more insight about what I will be trying to accomplish. I would have had the same reaction to the doors not coming together. Really good job. I still don't really know where to put that rubber thing but that now seems to be the least of my problems. Going to get a level before I start.... :)
This is the best tutorial ever, because this is exactly me. I would do all of these same things. I’m also the opposite of expert. Perfect for me! Thanks.
On the bottom of sliding door you should see a hole that u can slide a screwdriver into. That raises and lowers a wheel that allows you to adjust your door. Hope that helps
Funny, I thought there was something wrong with the spring mechanism too, when it was just two little pieces of shipping cardboard still left in the unit. Btw, if you live on the upper floors of an apartment where security isn't an issue, this door works perfectly well without using the screws at all!! I just used a little piece duct tape to secure the sliding action, and that was all their was to it. Installation time? THREE SECONDS, FLAT. The unit looks beautiful, and works like a charm, keeping out the cold drafts like a champ. Wow. What a great product:)
Great video. Glad you had the courage to show your mistakes! I am thinking of installing one like this for our cats so they can easily access the 'catio' I built. I haven't seen the instructions you had to work with but if it is like most that come with the stuff I buy, they probably have a lot to be desired. I always wonder if the people who write the instructions ever have people try to follow them before they are included in the box. Sure doesn't seem like it. I laughed when I heard the audio beeps. Been there, done that myself. ;-)
I'm glad you showed this. One thing I noticed. If you would have put the inset on the door track, you wouldn't been able to use the door latch, as the front facing strips would have not been flush. That was good to see. Thank you for your efforts. Does your doggy still fit the door?
I loved this! It adds a little humor (at their expense) because we’ve all done DIY projects and know how something that’s looks easy can turn into frustration. Thanks for not editing out the struggles. I did learn a lot and will try to avoid some of the simple mistakes I know I would do…such as first installing it backwards, or backwards and upside down (which I would do 😅) BTW I think your dog grew during the making of this video 😜
ROFLMAO!!! This is probably the realest video EVER on youtube. I'm on my THIRD dog door because the others were too tall so I finally got a shorty which fits. NOW THE PROBLEM is that I have small to large dogs and the flap I got is xlarge but its too high at the bottom for the chihuahua to jump through. AGHHHHHHHH!!! Plus lots of air in between and can't lock. I'M DONE!!
Hi there! We had to special order our giant door for our English mastiff puppies plus we have a 96 in sliding door...so my husband has no patience and assumed its the dog door cause we had all that same types of issue as you. He wanted to send it back but I'm like heck no shipping was expensive! Thank you for posting this video. So my question is what did you end up doing to fix the gap between the pet door and slider door? We have the same problem!
Phew, I am not the only one! It simple until the stupid gap between the door and the insert! Even with the weather strips I still had a gap. 😡 thanks for making an honest video!
This was an excellent vid, it was like watching myself work at projects, minus all the swearing; you clearly need to work on your swearing not enough of it! LOL! This was just fun to watch, nothing is ever easy, if the destructions say 2 hours plan on 2 days.
ben welch Haha ah man. That is too true. I was so frustrated with this stupid door. I was making a video on changing out an ac compressor on a car yesterday and just about gave up. If nothing else, making the videos for this channel is good anger management haha.
Much better then the manufacturer video. I knew it couldn't be easy as they showed. Soon as I got it home I put it in to dry run and has a 0.5" gap on each side. The gap you have it might be due to the original latch for slide door lock which was on the wall. Did you remove it?
I love this video so freaking much. You are sharing the challenges I'm running in to and some great solutions. Right now, I'm feeling 9:25 pretty hard. THIS should be the official PetSafe installation video.
I’m convinced!!! I AM NOT going to be installing one of these…. Thank you very much for the honesty! 👍

Thanks for showing the bumpy road. I learned a lot just watching this video.
Music on these is always loud and distracting, but the instructions are helpful and I learned a good bit from his errors!
Groan.
Another video a guy from pet doors said you can adjust wheel of sliding screen, but that probably does not apply.
Yeah, kudos for keeping the story complete. It feels so real with the included hardware that’s not good enough, with the wrong side first, and last but not least the power tools that look like what the average homeowner would have on hand. Thanks, dude. You are the man!

The company’s install video makes it look soooo easy. Good video showing all of the actual install steps that aren’t shown by the manufacturer.

Same
Love the video. Glad you're not a pro. I was able to learn what to do and what not to do and why. Thanks for sharing.

Good job. You answered the questions I had about how it secures to the door. Thank you.
This video was awesome. Made me laugh and avoid making the same mistakes. Thanks for not editing out the mistakes.

Great video. Loved that you showed all the install, warts and all. Good and bad. We laughed, we cried. Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated for the video! It helped my installation go smoothly. To fix that gap at the bottom of the door I fastened some wooden wedges that were a few inches long. They provided enough lift to the door to correct the gap
Awesome video, very informative. Loved the fact that tou didn't edit this so that we don't make those litttle mistakes. Thank you

Do* you know
Great video. I admire your tenacity and attitude. I'm going to try to talk my hubby into installing one of these. Thanks!
This is the best “how to” video I’ve seen yet! Now this is real life!! I literally was LOL

Thank you Eric Koston for this incredibly helpful video 🙏🏻

I absolutely love this video. Thank you for posting it.

One of the most hilarious videos. I have gone through so many similar mistakes w projects. Legit content, thanks for sharing!
This was helpful. Thanks for not editing out the mistakes
I just purchased from Amazon, not here yet, but your video was awesome! Hope Maverek is doing well.
Excellent video! I’m considering getting one of these and this video helped me understand the installation.
Just got this exact door. You helped me so much!! Thank you!
Did not expect all those set backs!! Haha I love it!!
You’re a man after my own heart. Fun and helpful video. Thanks!
Great video, thanks for posting. We will be attempting this installation ourselves at the weekend so its super to see your demo. Well done on staying so cool when you hit problems, I would have thrown the thing out in a Basil Fawlty style tantrum I think!

Thanks.
Thanks for the video - was trying to figure out the positioning of the track myself. Your 1:30 am expedition paid off : D
So helpful to know ahead of time.
Thank you for the video...this really saved us from going through what you did. Appreciate very much!!
Thank you so much. very helpful. You saved me a significant amount of time.
Dude... thanks... You saved me hours of confusion. You ROCK!! And Maverick is adorbs!!
On the bottom of sliding door you should see a hole that u can slide a screwdriver into. That raises and lowers a wheel that allows you to adjust your door. Hope that helps
oooooo!
Thank you for your assistance on installing my doggy door!
Been there, done that myself. ;-)
That was great and hilarious, thanks for pioneering this for us.
Thanks, you answered a few questions I had about the installation.
I'm glad you showed this. One thing I noticed. If you would have put the inset on the door track, you wouldn't been able to use the door latch, as the front facing strips would have not been flush. That was good to see. Thank you for your efforts. Does your doggy still fit the door?
This is a fantastic video. I ran into similar issues.
Thanks for taking the time to post this video!
Damn this save me a lot time to prepare and had all my tools ready thanks
Thanks so much for making this. It made me feel much better about my struggle with it 😂and definitely helped overall
Your pain is my gain. Thank u
I loved this! It adds a little humor (at their expense) because we’ve all done DIY projects and know how something that’s looks easy can turn into frustration. Thanks for not editing out the struggles. I did learn a lot and will try to avoid some of the simple mistakes I know I would do…such as first installing it backwards, or backwards and upside down (which I would do 😅)
BTW I think your dog grew during the making of this video 😜
Just what I needed thank you so much love your personality :)
Phenomenal 😂 9:12 is phenomenal. Amazing video.
I'M DONE!!

Phew, I am not the only one! It simple until the stupid gap between the door and the insert! Even with the weather strips I still had a gap. 😡 thanks for making an honest video!
Good job cousin!!! So glad I found your video!
Best video man honest and real
The bleep out part was awesome. Sooo... I'm not the only one who spazzes out 😅
This was an excellent vid, it was like watching myself work at projects, minus all the swearing; you clearly need to work on your swearing not enough of it!
Dude! The cussing at 9:24 was the best reaction to this door 😂 we did the same thing…omg those horrible directions… geez!
9:20 so relatable 😂😂 this is easily my favorite dog door video
I laughed so hard, because it's a story of my life, when I think I figured it out, I strip the screw....:)))
Hi, is the dog door frame vinyl or aluminum? Thanks for showing everything. It helps to anticipate glitches.
Great Job!! Thank you for sharing I am going to give it a whirl! 😉
So many things go wrong lol. That's exactly like me. I don't know why everything has to be so difficult! Nothing is simple.
Omg I feel you’re pain hahah I was struggling so much then I got on TH-cam and now I don’t feel so bad
Wonder if adjusting slider rollers to level door before installing would help with gaps going to installing mine tomorrow
Much better then the manufacturer video. I knew it couldn't be easy as they showed. Soon as I got it home I put it in to dry run and has a 0.5" gap on each side. The gap you have it might be due to the original latch for slide door lock which was on the wall. Did you remove it?
