One of my favorites is Sufi Princess Noor Inayat Khan, who left her life of comfort as an illustrator of children’s books to become a radio operator in occupied France. She was one of Nancy Wake’s girls and was executed in the camps after capture. You could certainly make a Band of Sisters just out of those Wake sent in and the grande damme herself.
These resistance fighters were serious awesome badasses, and still kept their humanity. Shooting Nazis on the street, because he killed a baby in front of her? Hanna is a hero. I’m so so sorry she got caught🥺.
This is one of the most heart wrenching episodes to date. I cannot even begin to imagine what it must have been like to be in their place at that time. Such bravery.

My grandmother lived in Paris during WWII. She was Jewish and escaped to unoccupied France. She could have sat the war out in this part of France and been safe. However, she joined the French Resistance/Underground. She had some very similar experiences as the women in the video. She was the last woman to be discharged from the Resistance. My Aunt wrote a book about her experiences with her collaboration before she passed away. You can find it on Amazon. She's definitely a hero in my eyes! @Susan Moran She was one of a kind. She passed away at 93. She was strong, loved by everyone, and very caring. Truly one of the inspirational people in my life, who has had a massive influence on me.

After the war, she and my grandfather came to Texas (where he was born). She didn't speak the language, knew no one in the states except my grandfather, and she was pregnant with my mother. She kept everything about the war a secret until my mother was in her late teens. My mother and aunt were raised Presbyterian. She was afraid the Nazis would return. However, when people started denying the Holocaust, she showed how strong she was again by speaking up about her experiences. I'm so glad I had her in my life into my late 40s. :)

My father, Canadian Forces Europe, ended his tour of service in Holland. He was very fond of the Dutch and always spoke kindly of them. And he wasn't one to speak kindly very much at all.
My father was 15 when Holland was liberated by the Canadians. One of your soldiers gave Dad a bit of chocolate and his first cigarette (to celebrate). Dad rarely spoke about the war, but literally on his death bed, the day before he died, he talked for about two hours about his family's experiences and his closing comments were about how wonderful the Canadian soldier was to him. Yeh my great grandpa was the head of civil protection in his village near Harlam, most of his work was misplacing files and smuggling documents to resistance cells. He got to blow up a bridge with his brothers, and they were all captured quick after. He was spared the execution, and lived to an old man and died in 1974, fishing with his youngest brother. Just laid down for a nap and didn’t wake up. He was one of the lucky ones. His being spared just another act of cruelty, told to go back to the village and tell everyone what happened there that day. He never spoke a word. He told my grampa what happened to his brothers, well after the war, but he never complied with those fascist cocksuckers.

And she had the courage to go to Ireland and try to help the reconciliation process, which appeared to be extremely difficult. You may call it a war, that has been going on for ages. And she was quite dissapointed, so much distrust still exists in Ireland. At least she has been there and tried to help. That was all she could do. She returned to the Netherlands, she is now working as as Baptist minister, near Amsterdam. When you have a Twitter account, you could try to contact her: @JannieNijwening. I'm sorry I could not find an email address. I can tell, she must be a distant family member of yours. And one to be proud of, too. I've actually found that many of the Protestant Dutch people I know had family members who opposed the Germans in many different ways. So, my family was only one among many other families who did the work of heroes. If you're interested, there is a book written by a man who worked with my family in the Dutch resistance. It's called, "The Secret Diary of Arnold Douwes, Rescue in the Occupied Netherlands." There is an incredible story, that I really love, about my Great Grandmother Harmina Nijwening in that book.

What a bad assed woman. Such an inspiration for standing up for your beliefs. She turned her anger into positive energy and fearlessness. Let me get this straight - because they had families, and doing these missions put them in danger? Did you WATCH the video? Did you see they watched Nazis killing innocent people in the street? Take a baby from a mother's arms, right in front of them, and kill the baby? If everyone thought like you (since nearly everyone has families) - then tyranny and evil would never be fought at all. There's a reason that many people thank not only the soldiers for their service, but their families as well, for having to sacrifice time with their loved ones, as well as the constant stress and worry of the safety of them. And this applies to even the families of local law enforcement, fire fighters, etc. I have a brother-in-law who's a cop. My sister isn't even on FB b/c of the fear that some bad guy will find them out. I consider him a hero for doing what others won't or can't do. And you'd say, "well, he has a family, so he shouldn't be doing it." That's denying even the respect, honor, and appreciation these heroes deserve because "you don't think they have the moral high ground." I hope you see how ridiculous that sounds.

The evil that pushed such beautiful and innocent souls to violence must have been truly repulsive. @jay not at all. But when a force has invaded your country and is committing genocide, yes, I do think armed resistance is necessary then. I'd much rather it never come to that, but if an organisation is systematically murdering a part of your population I think it's everyone's duty to do what they can stop them. If the Nazis could've been stopped could've been stopped through non-violent diplomatic means that would of course have been best, but that wasn't the case. It's not a right vs left thing - I hold the same opinion for resistance against communist dictatorships like the former Soviet Union.

Ive survived so much years of abusive childhood, chronically very sick, abusive boyfriends, I survived a fire 2nd an 3rd degree burns to 40% of my body, 2 natural child births with kidney stones almost my entire second pregnancy, brain radiation I'll need more in 2 years and I survived being kidnapped and fighting off my attacker. Also my dad was murdered and my best committed suicide the day I got back to Maine from getting my brain radiation. An I lost 3 grandparents this past year. I got left with the one grand parent who's evil lol But I dont feel strong in fact I feel very weak most days being sick 24/7 doesn't help. An I know compared to other incredible people I have been through little. But I try to remind myself I'm still alive and I still get up and do everything I can plus more. Though I love men. I'd be lost without my little brother. An growing up I always preferred the company of guys over women. Mainly cause girls were mean and nasty to me for no reason. But I admire tough and strong resilient women and men. Hell human are incredibly strong creatures.

I knew a young student whose grandparents were in the resistance. She said they wouldn’t talk about it.

War kills everything. Even with those who survive, something in them dies. These girls were beyond heroic, but it's horrible that they had to do what they did. I salute all who resist evil and oppression - it's good to know that there are people who will say 'no' to the worst in us.

My grandmother lived in Paris during WWII. She was Jewish and escaped to unoccupied France. She could have sat the war out in this part of France and been safe. However, she joined the French Resistance/Underground. She had some very similar experiences as the women in the video. She was the last woman to be discharged from the Resistance. My Aunt wrote a book about her experiences with her collaboration before she passed away. You can find it on Amazon. She's definitely a hero in my eyes!

@Susan Moran She was one of a kind. She passed away at 93. She was strong, loved by everyone, and very caring. Truly one of the inspirational people in my life, who has had a massive influence on me.
@@chrislair6832 very well. I used to listen to her stories for hours. She told all of her grandchildren about the war, so they would make sure that people didn't forget after her generation was gone. After the war, she and my grandfather came to Texas (where he was born). She didn't speak the language, knew no one in the states except my grandfather, and she was pregnant with my mother. She kept everything about the war a secret until my mother was in her late teens. My mother and aunt were raised Presbyterian. She was afraid the Nazis would return. However, when people started denying the Holocaust, she showed how strong she was again by speaking up about her experiences. I'm so glad I had her in my life into my late 40s. :)

My father, Canadian Forces Europe, ended his tour of service in Holland. He was very fond of the Dutch and always spoke kindly of them. And he wasn't one to speak kindly very much at all.

The Dutch were grateful for Canadian forces coming to liberate them. To this day we recieve tulips from them every year to show their gratitude.
My father was 15 when Holland was liberated by the Canadians. One of your soldiers gave Dad a bit of chocolate and his first cigarette (to celebrate). Dad rarely spoke about the war, but literally on his death bed, the day before he died, he talked for about two hours about his family's experiences and his closing comments were about how wonderful the Canadian soldier was to him. Thanks to your father for his service.

Anyone else here who has relatives who were involved with the Dutch resistance?
Some members of my family tree are counted among the righteous, from the Israeli government, for what they did to protect Jews. But if you asked them if they were heroes they would reply, “Heroes? No! We could do no other.”

Yeh my great grandpa was the head of civil protection in his village near Harlam, most of his work was misplacing files and smuggling documents to resistance cells.
He got to blow up a bridge with his brothers, and they were all captured quick after. He was spared the execution, and lived to an old man and died in 1974, fishing with his youngest brother. Just laid down for a nap and didn’t wake up.
He was one of the lucky ones. His being spared just another act of cruelty, told to go back to the village and tell everyone what happened there that day.
He never spoke a word. He told my grampa what happened to his brothers, well after the war, but he never complied with those fascist cocksuckers.

And she had the courage to go to Ireland and try to help the reconciliation process, which appeared to be extremely difficult. You may call it a war, that has been going on for ages. And she was quite dissapointed, so much distrust still exists in Ireland. At least she has been there and tried to help. That was all she could do.
She returned to the Netherlands, she is now working as as Baptist minister, near Amsterdam. When you have a Twitter account, you could try to contact her: @JannieNijwening. I'm sorry I could not find an email address.
I can tell, she must be a distant family member of yours. And one to be proud of, too. You could google her and send her an e-mail, or call her on the phone. I'm sure the Nywenings in the Netherlands would enjoy such contacts.

I've actually found that many of the Protestant Dutch people I know had family members who opposed the Germans in many different ways. So, my family was only one among many other families who did the work of heroes.
If you're interested, there is a book written by a man who worked with my family in the Dutch resistance. It's called, "The Secret Diary of Arnold Douwes, Rescue in the Occupied Netherlands."
There is an incredible story, that I really love, about my Great Grandmother Harmina Nijwening in that book.

Let me get this straight - because they had families, and doing these missions put them in danger? Did you WATCH the video? Did you see they watched Nazis killing innocent people in the street? Take a baby from a mother's arms, right in front of them, and kill the baby?
If everyone thought like you (since nearly everyone has families) - then tyranny and evil would never be fought at all. There's a reason that many people thank not only the soldiers for their service, but their families as well, for having to sacrifice time with their loved ones, as well as the constant stress and worry of the safety of them. And this applies to even the families of local law enforcement, fire fighters, etc. I have a brother-in-law who's a cop. My sister isn't even on FB b/c of the fear that some bad guy will find them out. I consider him a hero for doing what others won't or can't do. And you'd say, "well, he has a family, so he shouldn't be doing it."
That's denying even the respect, honor, and appreciation these heroes deserve because "you don't think they have the moral high ground."

The evil that pushed such beautiful and innocent souls to violence must have been truly repulsive. Their words are quite adequite to describe what they saw but the idea that a person who would not other wise hurt a fly finds themselves pushed to cold blooded murder because the alternative is so that much worse, it breaks my heart that these brave women had to give up so much of themselves, their youth and their innocence.

@jay not at all. But when a force has invaded your country and is committing genocide, yes, I do think armed resistance is necessary then. I'd much rather it never come to that, but if an organisation is systematically murdering a part of your population I think it's everyone's duty to do what they can stop them. If the Nazis could've been stopped could've been stopped through non-violent diplomatic means that would of course have been best, but that wasn't the case. It's not a right vs left thing - I hold the same opinion for resistance against communist dictatorships like the former Soviet Union.

Ive survived so much years of abusive childhood, chronically very sick, abusive boyfriends, I survived a fire 2nd an 3rd degree burns to 40% of my body, 2 natural child births with kidney stones almost my entire second pregnancy, brain radiation I'll need more in 2 years and I survived being kidnapped and fighting off my attacker. Also my dad was murdered and my best committed suicide the day I got back to Maine from getting my brain radiation. An I lost 3 grandparents this past year. I got left with the one grand parent who's evil lol But I dont feel strong in fact I feel very weak most days being sick 24/7 doesn't help. An I know compared to other incredible people I have been through little. But I try to remind myself I'm still alive and I still get up and do everything I can plus more. Though I love men. I'd be lost without my little brother. An growing up I always preferred the company of guys over women. Mainly cause girls were mean and nasty to me for no reason. But I admire tough and strong resilient women and men. Hell human are incredibly strong creatures.
