I’ve constantly referred to SME as the example company of “We have a scandal? Debut a new girl group!” I’m glad knowing there’s actually a term for this. Thank you for making this video ❤️
@@thebstar1366 what? They're planning on debuting two nct subunits and a Boy group, they technically just debuted aespa too, where did you get this information from??
@@Laura-nw1bj On an investor call or something it said that they were planning to debut a girl band (like AoA Black I guess). And a few weeks later there was a bunch of pictures of trainee silhouette on top of hands of trainees doing hearts and people speculated it was the members of the rumoured group i'd link the article but every time I try my reply seems to get deleted (it's the 4th time I type this)
the worst thing about red velvet it's not only that they debuted in a time of crisis for sm, but they also redebuted with a highly controversial and sexual song such as Ice Cream Cake and redebuted with a new member , which a lot of people hated. I think when we talk about unfair treatment and hatred against girl groups a lot of people forget how harsh knetz and kpop fandom were to Red Velvet. In their first three years they had a huge amount of hate by kpop fans, Korean general public and even from other SM stans, such as F(x) fanbases
@@Cakes01 yup it gets even weirder when you remember that Yeri was still a minor singing things such as I scream You scream I need that ice cream in my mouth 😐😐😐 also let's take a wild guess who was the creative director of red velvet in ice cream cake era
@@gwgwap I just went a listened to it again and oh no 😭😭😭😭 it’s so bad like she was barley 15 when she joined and as a kid I was listening to that stuff it makes me think of New jeans cookie
For red velvet ice cream cake the problem was not the song but the fact than their maknae was 16 at the time and should nt sing a song with a sexual meaning
@@hannahv7008 this. Same thing with Cookie and NewJeans. I can't listen to it. The statement that the company released to try and debunk the innuendos in the lyrics just made it worse to me. While there are valid concerns about minors in the entertainment industry as a whole, and certain things are magnified in K-pop, both Cookie, and Ice Cream Cake, wouldn't necessarily be problematic if they were performed by adults who were comfortable and happy with the concept and content. Stellar is an example of a group who were tricked by their company into a concept they were not okay with. They even successfully argued against a particularly revealing outfit that they wouldn't be able to dance in without exposing themselves, only for the company to release a photograph of the members wearing it anyway. There are so many people in and around the entertainment industry who are shady, dodgy, or even outright dangerous, and the companies should be protecting the idols as much as possible, and this is even more important when the idols aren't even adults.
the reason they used a sexy song like ice cream cake is, iirc, because it was supposed to be an f(x) song but they gave it to red velvet. that makes a lot of sense since f(x) were grown and would have no problem with a sexy song like ice cream and it definitely has the sound of an old school f(x) song.
I had no idea BP have a "no plastic surgery" clause in their contracts. If that's true, it's so dirty. I just feel so bad for Bom. She got so much hate from not only the gp but also her own boss, the person who's supposed to protect and guide her in the industry. And then she gets mocked for going under the knife as well, which in Korea is extremely common. She seems like such a sweet person, she didn't deserve any of this. Edit: grammar
well actually, in their early years there were many articles/interviews about the long list of things they couldn't do because "it was in the contract", like drinking, plastic surgery, etc. even as far as not being able to drive and having to ask permission to buy a car, even though they wouldn't even drive it. this probably was said to push the idea of a "better" group that was so carefully managed so they could do no "wrong". separating them further from any scandal.
It's not a real clause, like the vid said it's just a rumored clause started by yg bc he was so determined to make a group that wouldn't have the same 'mistakes' of 2NE1
i won't flat out say i think this claim is fake because we don't truly know, but i find it very hard to believe any k-pop company would ban plastic surgery. in my opinion, it seems like YG only got blackpink to say these things to the public as part of PR. they wanted blackpink to help reform the company's image and also to separate them from 2ne1's "failures", i always viewed it as a cruel way the company was trying to make it obvious to the public that they'd never be like park bom when it came to plastic surgery.
the fact that gidle debuted when it was announced that cube will go bankrupt arround end of 2018 and latata didn't just save idle but cube as a whole especially when idle members said they were trained for a cute concept and that doesn't match the mv for latata they probably made it very girl crush to give them a higher chance of succeeding and their photoshoots for the 1st album screamed low budget and rushed i've always wondered if there was a name for this unfair phenomenon, you explained it really well
wait, correct me if I'm wrong here. But I've read somewhere that Soyeon revealed how Latata was initially turned down by the company, but the members expressed how they loved the song. I believe it was in the context along the lines of how precious the members are for soyeon. Thus, it was pretty much soyeon (and prob the members) who pushed the whole trajectory for their debut concept.
@@nothing4120 You're basically exactly right. Cube was broke from a CLC comeback and a Pentagon comeback when (G)I-DLE debuted, and couldn't do predebut promotions for the (g)irls apart from a barebones photoshoot with trash cans, an old couch, and a green tarp duct-taped to a wall. They sold literally 260 copies of I AM in the first 24 hours, and it was only after they started getting music show wins that Cube paid any attention to them at all. I feel like they're one of the rare cases of the glass cliff situation actually panning out, since they debuted during a lot of the rumors preceding HyunA and Dawn's termination; the proximity of those events just isn't talked about much because they're one of the few groups that made it big after being put in that situation as opposed to fading into obscurity after the company deems that they've served their purpose. Also yes I'm salty about Cube doing that with LIGHTSUM and I'm determined to help get those girls out of nugudom. Hopefully Cube lands on a creative vision for them soon, I'd hate to see another group from Cube with good music fade away because of that shitty company not knowing how to operate (CLC deserved so much better).
I actually heard Soyeon made LATATA because Minnie wanted to leave as CUBE kept delaying their debut (which is also Miyeon's reason she's stated to have left YG and BLACKPINK's line--up). But CUBE probably did finally cave into Soyeon and the group's general unhappiness with their lack of debut because of the near-bankruptcy. I mean, it does seem like a big enough reason to allow a girl group to start self-producing...
Omg, YG is such a jackass?? Like publicly calling women that make him money “ugly” and not helping them out of controversies that are completely explainable. Why does anyone respect him..
He has to be thankful to BIGBANG and 2NE1. No other group could have made the company as big as it is now. Even with BP big international success it shows YG doesn't have any management talents, he just so happened to be home of 3 big af groups, but throws them under the bus at the smallest sign of a scandal.
@@cc20016 yup I feel the same. its actually almost shocking how poor their management is with how popular of a group black pink is. yg is an example of artist talent and fandom power really being the only thing sustaining a group.
Because people hate women. Even after everything involving 2NE1, YGE waited for him to be free of charges from the Burning Sun Scandal because they specifically wanted him to manage their new girl group.
Yes SM has continuously used Red Velvet throughout the years. If anything tells you how little they matter, just look at what happened after Wendy’s accident. Instead of promoting psycho and the group, they decided to debut a new girl group. Red Velvet were no longer deemed necessary. However, I think they may not have taken into account, the popularity and respect the group has earned with others in the industry and around the world.
As detailed in the video, the same thing happened to f(x) - except MeUs weren't lucky enough to get their group back (bar a single comeback years later). We've still never had an explanation about what happened to our group, and SM never officially announces the disbandment of a group so we don't even get closure
@@miss_jess I remember, and I knew it was a matter of time before they did the same to Red Velvet. Look at Exo too. Aespa will have the same done to them, after 7 years, if they’re lucky, as will NCT.
I'm pretty sure they HAVE taken into acc their popularity now considering they're still pretty active with new releases, songs & activities. When SM doesn't care about their artists anymore, they wouldn't give them any chance to do practically anything. Look at f(x) prior their disbandment. Or Henry as well. RV doesn't get that kind of treatment(yet).
I got pretty significant backlash when I said in a comment section that baby monster being dropped right now was nothing more than a coverup for all the bs that happened to yg in the last week or so and SO MANY people got mad at me and said that I was in the wrong when I even gave examples of it happening in the past. Thank you for giving me a link to essentially show that I’m right lol
@@cynacist1823 A lot of their idols left yg and transferred to the black label and there was a rumor that BP did as well, but it was debunked and not soon after that, YG released the promotional teaser for baby monster
@@neb.9489 Aahh, thank you. They said the same thing about 2NE1 then they found out through gossip blogs that yg had disbanded them. I think something similar will happen with baby monster once they can milk profit from one of their boy groups.
the fact that blackpink was the one that got hate over the Burning Sun scandals over the actual rapists and drug addicts still pisses me off. EVEN NOW people use the scandal to hate on the girls, who had absolutely nothing to do with it. And we all know which fandom hated the girls over something they had no power over.
the thing w red velvet, it depended on what side of the kpop fandom u were on. when they debuted, i saw endless praise for the girls dancing and singing. although everyone could agree it was rushed and felt like it was to cover everything up, rarely saw people say it was a bad debut. that kinda shocked me actually.
I think there was a 9/11 reference and a newspaper with Hiroshima on it in the original Happiness MV that later got edited out but made a lot of headlines? People weren’t too happy about that.
@@ruiqi22 oh yeah there was that too. people especially japanese kpop stans were livid but it was not towards the girls in any way that part, surprisingly. seeing as the usual kpop stan uses what a company does to hate on idols instead. but the song itself wasn’t received that badly as the way people claimed.
I was at kcon LA when their debut was announced. The MC mentioned red velvet and I heard multiple “who??”s in the crowd. I remember it was a lukewarm reception, but Wendy’s vocals helped during live performances. Ice cream cake was ROUGH.
f(x) got me into kpop and remains an ult bias, but I'm also a choir nerd; I appreciate good performance. I _liked_ Red Velvet from the get-go, and reserved my anger for the company at their transparent maneuvers. Angry as I was at Jessica being ousted, I can still appreciate SNSD OT8. It's not as magical as OT9, but its still pretty good. Oh!GG on the other hand is too threadbare. F(x)'s suppression after renewing and getting a measly four-performance concert series. SM didn't know what to do with them, but made damn sure nobody else could do anything with them either! So, I resolved to keep following the SM groups I like, but not any new ones. I never watched a single aespa MV, but the GOT The Beat unit is undercutting my resolution. It's complicated.
Majority of those who were screaming "bad debut" and critisizing it where k-netz taht had a problem with SM debuting a group in the mids of "scandals" not their fandom.
Okay, when fans CORRECTLY THEORIZE a new group debut at the peak of a scandal, THAT’s when you know the company just doesn’t deserve to be trusted anymore.
When framed in this way, it really starts to look like Blackpink’s reason for existence is to cover up scandals. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that each of their comebacks coincided with a YG scandal, and that’s why they’re so few and far between. And I’ve always hated how YG is so focused on female idols’ looks, but doesn’t say a word about male idols’ looks.
Burning Sun Scandal comes to light: We get “The Album” Burning Sun Scandal reaches closure in the court system: We get “Born Pink” YGE is really just using Blackpink to cover up their failures as a company.
Makes sense considering the Born Pink album feels so rushed. There was only six brand new songs with RFL which was an old leaked song and a bunch of other songs that sounded like The Album rejects
@@neb.9489 Not to mention how the members expressed annoyance in needing to learn the choreography at the last second. I wouldn’t be surprised if YGE pushed off Born Pink for this specific instance.
@@Nameless_mixesThat would also explain their difficulties at the beginning of the tour and how off sync they were. They probably did not have enough rehearsal time before hand bc YG wanted enough money from them. They know that blackpink has a big fanbase and will put in a lot of money bc blinks are eager for more music/content and putting out a quick album and sending on tour was the best way to do it. Also, I noticed that they finally officially announce the debut of their new gg during blackpink’s 7th year. The year people are waiting hear if they will resign or not, so it’s like yg themselves don’t know if they’ll resign, but there’s no worry for them bc they’ll have this new gg to take their place. That’s what they did for 2NE1. Blackpink debuted months before 2NE1 disbanded.
Thank you for this video, it's so spot on! I didn't know about TS throwing Sonamoo to the wolves to cover the BAP controversy, but given the timeline, it definitely makes sense now. What hurts is that Sonamoo was so exceptionally talented and underrated. They were one of the first new girl groups I got into when I returned from my kpop hiatus in 2016. As for YG - he should never be in charge of a girl group ever again. No girl is safe from his creepy misogyny. I would love to hear your thoughts on kpop groups (especially boy groups) underperforming ticket sales recently - Epex just had their tour cancelled, and Oneus, P1Harmony, and others are barely selling half their total tickets. I have several theories why this is happening, but I'm in America - it would help having a larger global perspective as well.
I think the bg examples are because they just aren't popular enough and the company may have overestimated fanpower like they always do with bgs since bgs are always known to have hardcore female fans.
@@ying_xuan_natalietan3606 I absolutely agree. I don't think these companies or promoters are doing enough research on their overseas markets before announcing a tour, and they usually announce their tours roughly a month ahead, which makes no sense. They're also trying to sell out larger venues that are more appropriate for the veteran/more popular groups. That expectation of instant success is harming these groups in the long run and it's not fair to them or their fans.
@@morphogenetic_ Their own tour. I'd rather they start with small venues and work up from there as groups normally do, but somehow C9 thought booking them a larger venue was appropriate, didn't promote their tour, and then they wondered why tickets weren't selling. 🙄
@@escritora84 i have a theory that these companies estimate their bgs fanbase by album sales and were misguided by it. I think that some of these smaller bgs may be able to sell over 100k albums but it is their individual fans buying multiple copies of the same album since they are much hardcore. In actual fact the fanbase is incredibly small but gives off the impression that there are a decent amount of fans to host a tour lol. In fact, i don't think kpop companies these days expect instant success with their bgs unlike their ggs as seen by how many nugu ggs disband if their first comeback flops.
I had a conversation recently with a friend where she asked if I disliked Blackpink since I'm a 2ne1 fan and I said basically that I like them, but I feel bad for them more than anything since they're under YGE. I think she was genuinely shocked until I pointed out that as a 2ne1 fan, I know how YGE treats their artists and how Yang Hyun-suk treats the women under his power. I don't think life as an idol is very easy, but it must be even more difficult if you're expected to save your company's face. Really hoping for the best for Baby Monster too
Aespa may not have been a serious glass cliff, but their debut was mishandled in many ways. SME's PR comments drwing parallels to blackpink itself brought them so much hate. If you weren't there in 2020 I don't think you'd believe how much hate these girls got, even for a big3 debut
I remember they even were accused of ripping off (G)I-DLE's Lion concept with the concept photos where they wear crowns. Not to mention it was SO risky debuting a group right when the pandemic peaked. Aespa's debut could have been delayed to 2021 or even starting 2022 and it would have been so much better for the girls' careers.
Based off of your context of glass cliff, this is different but I think it still applies, you talked about kep1er but I want to make another point about it too: I think groups like kep1er and ioi may fall into this? Their produce shows were the tests for mnets future girl groups, post ioi, many companies weren't sure what to do to promote their groups in a way that will make them successful bc it was the first time we've see a produce group in kpop. Kep1er also had this problem on gp999, they initially had the 3 korean, 3 chinese, and 3 japanese member plan on the show, but they later changed it after backlash, while bp999 hasn't aired, we can already see these changes that are already minimising backlash so that if there are more koreans, than global participants you can't blame mnet.
I hadn't heard of this concept before, but it actually makes perfect sense. I feel bad for all the groups presented in the video, but it's interesting to see that even coming from a glass cliff, Red Velvet and Blackpink survived and rose to fame, so it means being thrown out to the market as fodder isn't automatically a death sentence. I also think more recently LE SSERAFIM is a case of glass cliff, and NEW JEANS after it, but it seems HYBE is putting more hope into NJ than LS (and it sucks:( For now I'm worried about AESPA's future as it seems SM has stopped properly promoting them... I'd love to see a video retracing LOONA's career from you!
@@abc-dv7fs I think bc Le Sserafim had a rough scandal with Garam's alleged bullying, and then before that Source/HYBE had been dealing with GFriend fans who were mad over their sudden forced disbandment and how they were trying to prevent them from keeping the GFriend name to continue promotions. They pushed Le Sserafim to get over the GFriend uproar and then used Garam to get the public talking before kicking her out and blame her for any lack of performance in their debut
@@abc-dv7fs gfriend was disbanded literally right before they debuted lesserafim which happens to have two famous members from izone…..yeah looks like a glass cliff to me
As I've only become an Orbit in the last year and am immensely invested in the Chuu/BBC debacle I would love a Loona career video from you! ✨ You articulate your thoughts, the facts and your feelings so well and every time I get the notification that you've uploaded a new video I click right away! Thank you for your content!
I'd also like to add to the Kep1er point that gp999 was promoted as the fair, rig-free, completely unique and different survival show, which emphasizes even more on how mnet needed a distraction from the rigging of pd48, and tried to make that distraction look like a "new and improved" version to give the public the false hope that they've changed. It really sucks, I wanna stan kep1er but I just cant with how messy this entire ordeal is
2014 was a mess for sm like nothing was doing right! i was a meu and never once did i think of blaming sulli or hating on rv. i was pretty much aware of what sm was doing with rv and i hated that sm was debuting them and what a mess rv was from their mv to concept to styling to the addition of yeri later. rv was definitely supposed to debut in 2015-2016.
For Redvelvet I heard that they were supposed to have different Velvet groups (think like NCT) and the girls we see at the start of Happiness (at about 9 seconds to 14 seconds) were supposed to debut in deferent Velvet units. I heard they were originally planning to do Blue and Yellow as well and then would see if they were popular enough to bring other units. Not sure that this was true but it explain the fact that they show trainees at the start of their debut video. Cube was always glass cliffs after glass cliffs. The company was seemingly built on top of HyunA's back. Then they started to slowly replace her with Soyeon. Cube's technique used to be put them with HyunA . 4minute's internal name was HyunA group, she then was put in a subunit with a Beast member to promote their group, then when 4minute disbanded they used her to create hype for CLC's new sound by saying she work on production, choreography and even styling, and then with Pentagon there was TripleH.
That's just a theory that people came up with after seeing all the SM Rookies in the Happiness MV, it has no substantial evidence behind it other than Yeri being one of them. SM probably only showed them to give them some pre-debut exposure, they did that a lot back then (Taeyong got a feature on Be Natural before his debut, for example, and some female trainees appeared on the Korean version of Mickey Mouse's Clubhouse). As for why they added Yeri, it could be the fact that SM thought RV could gain more attention if they had a more youthful vibe. Joy was already 17 or 18, and cuteness and youthfulness is very valued in South Korea, especially in 2015 when the cute concept was still popular, so by adding Yeri, who was 16 at the time, RV gained more charm. It could also be that Yeri was supposed to be in RV from the start, but since the debut was so rushed, she wasn't ready yet, or maybe SM decided not to debut girls under 16 anymore.
As a ReveLuv, Blink and MY, I feel so sorry on how they where treated. Red velvet's really messy debut and Yeri ending up being forgotten (she still is. She didn't get any solo or form a unit during Red Velvet's hiatus. She got a TV show and Drama, but I only found out about that via reading Yeri's Wikipedia page and the TV show via her Viki Rauten page). Aespa being stupidly marketed as Blackpink 0.2, even up to last year 's Coachella performance and having several comebacks in 2021 to one in 2022 and a scrapped full album. Seriously, SM. And all the mismanagement Blackpink has experienced. From some members getting better outfits, not giving a shut when Lisa was receiving Racist abuse, to essentially making four sub-fandoms in one big one,Rosé 's wait for solo debut, not telling anyone about Jennie's ankle injury, scrapped albums. I could go on and on and on
Not to mention how YG pretty much confirmed a chunk of their early songs were made for 2NE1; it was almost like that moron thought he was really doing something by selling them as “pretty 2NE1” all over media outlets….
U cannot consider urself a reveluv if u did not know about yeris own show and her drama. Like that was one of the high points of 2020 in reveluvland, just saying
SM's obsession with trying to recreate Blackpink and BTS in their weird ass ways is so annoying to me. I genuinely think that groups like NCT and their side projects like SuperM (the AvaNgErS oF KpOp) would be a lot more successful if they focused more on the groups individually instead of being so stuck on releasing the next big thing. It looks to me like the moment one of those big3 companies stop having the biggest group they just drop the ball, specially SM and JYPE
personally I think yeri was always meant to be in rv but they were forced to debut them earlier than expected and yeri was perhaps too young/not ready but I'm glad she didn't debut so young
when i was researching i was sure that the jessica scandal was another factor, but actually jessica left in september and red velvet debuted in august, so i couldn't use that as evidence. however, i actually do think there could have been internal issues happening with girls generation before the announcement of jessica's departure during august, and that could've played a part in red velvet's rushed debut, but - this is all my speculation so i left it out of the video as there is no evidence of what happened behind closed doors.
Yeah the reason I was always told was that she joined later because she was too young and therefore due to labour laws in Korea, the group would have to promote at earlier times in the evening (before 8pm or 9pm seems to ring a bell) so SM waited until she was old enough.
@FandomQueen that doesn't make sense because Yeri was 16 when she debuted and Taemin debuted in 2008 at 14 years old. There have been plenty of 14-16 year olds debut with no restrictions that affect regular promotions
@@miss_jess Yes I was thinking the same thing. BoA was 13 when she debuted so what happened with labor laws between then and now for Yeri to be considered too young? But then again, this is SM we're talkin' about, the leader in bringing about new laws because of how they screw over their artists.
I remember everyone was confused and worried about f(x)--first comeback after a year hiatus cut abruptly short, Sulli apparently so depressed she's leaving, rumors of disbanding, radio silence from everyone--and desperately wanting SOME kind of information about what the hell was going on, but instead we got: "Forget about that, look at this!" Even worse, RV was a new quirky, experimental gg, which was f(x)'s wheelhouse. SM really set them up for failure. Their debut felt so abrupt, they didn't get the hype they should have leading up to it either. (I like Happiness tho! But it's def rushed and unpolished compared to ICC, which would have been the perfect debut for them) I also remember that "future 2NE1" video coming out and the comment section just being a mosh pit of anger. I'm happy for BP and all their success, tho I'm sad that in the minds of the public it does seem like they've effectively replaced 2NE1, which no one thought possible at the time.
For Rv,I have never heard that they were supposed to be experimental, but yes, they are marketed as quirky and weird. I was extremely mad as it was what made f(x) stand out and unique. I remember Rv was pushed a lot. I mean, they released their first album within one year. When 4walls came out later,I knew they weren't going to be Sm priority anymore.
totally spot on and very well discussed as usual. I also wanted to add that even before kep1er debuted they had to fall off an even earlier glass cliff when being formed on gp999. The show used "experimental" elements to see if they would work in a future male version, like K C and J groups as well as the cell system. These elements caused negativity about the lineup before kep1er was even formed. They experimented with the girls at the cost of their mental health and lots of online hate just to see if it would work for the future male season. Boys planet is cutting out many of the elements that girls planet made the contestants suffer through
Thank you so much for making this video and, as always, incredibly well done especially on the topic of glass cliff. Being a 2nd gen stan it can sometimes be forgettable on why some companies debuted girl groups in the first place or their situations at that time, thank you again felt for making this video to let us not forget that double standards and misogyny still exists
That’s not fair. You didn’t clarify Bom’s scandal. They found her ADHD medication. Which it is illegal in Korean but perfectly legal in the U.S. from where she was coming from. Bom attended Jr high and high school in the U.S. where she was prescribed that medication because she needed it. Please clarify
oh, i'm very sorry in no way was this supposed to come across as an attack against park bom, i was only talking about it from the perspective of the korean public as it was a massive scandal, in no way does this mean she was guilty when it was only ADHD medication - it's crazy how they made it seem like she was like.. on meth or something damn. you're right i should've clarified this but the video was already very long and i found it hard to expand on a lot of the prior scandals. thanks for mentioning this!
As someone with ADHD, I *will* say that Adderall, one of the most common ADHD meds in the US I think, is a controlled substance because it CAN get people high. Thus, I understand why it may not be legal in other countries. But I think it’s unfair to overlook that she was already on this medication which is perfectly legal in the US… and a large part of why it’s so stigmatized may in fact be due to ableism, since those who don’t understand how much ADHD can affect your abilities to concentrate would probably therefore think this kind of drug is “unnecessary” and dangerous/basically just a narcotic. :(
@@Satou_Rin For real I've only been diagnosed as an adult and I still cannot believe how much of my entire life was and still is affected by ADHD. It's not just some "quirk," it literally alters the way you function, the way you go about your life and it makes you feel like a huge failure for not being able to "do normal" just like everyone else. And people brushing off ADHD like "it's not a big deal" or "you don't need medication" just boils my blood. True, some people might be able to live a productive life without medication, but criminalizing those who do not???? That's some ableist BS
Edit : YOU MENTIONED THEM LOL!! While watching this video I remembered the recent debut news of Baby Monster which to me was obviously done to cover up Ikon leaving YG. I also think YG Entertainment may want to debut Baby Monster as soon as possible as a distraction to the Blackpink news that YG is yet to release - that being whether or not Blackpink will resign.
I noticed this too! We’re at BP’s seventh year which is a year of uncertainty for a lot of groups and people are curious about their future. Just like during 2NE1, YG now has another group to cover with if anything happens. I personally think that nothing is going to happen, but YG wants to be safe ig
Red Velvet was always used by SM in the way you describe. There is a whole conspiracy that in their early stages, each time something happend in SK, RV would have their debut or comeback.
this video is everything i’ve thought about but been unable to put into words for years!! thank you for making it (and id definitely love to see your thoughts on loona and bbc… there’s some pretty messed up history there)
More reasons to keep remembering that your favourite idols and/or groups are just products for your favourite k-pop company. It is less likely to happen at the early stages of a company cos their life depends on the first group they debut and get's more and more likely to happen as years go by. Less likely definitely doesn't mean that it happens rarely infact far from it.
Well, it's like that in most industries. What we see as consumers rarely has anything to do with what happens behind the scenes and it's fine. No company in this world views their products as anything more than that. Obviously if your products are human, you will take more care of them than you would inanimate objects but the principles remain the same. All companies research markets and choose the right time to "debut" a product. All companies scratch obsolete products and make new ones to replace them. It's just that many kpop fans are literal children, so they have no idea how the real world works and how companies make their decisions. It's unfortunate that humans are treated as products but we as humans ALSO allowed this attitude to spread so much, consumers literally do treat artists as goods on the market, so the companies won't have the incentive to treat them any better until the public changes its opinion and starts demanding a different approach. For the record, a screaming minority of fans will never be enough to change the entire industry, we need systemic change in the government as well but that's a VERY long way to go 😁
Thank you so much for highlighting the weirdness with YGE and their management of Blackpink. Whenever Blinks mentions it, the entire K-pop community will be quick to scream "BlAcKPiNk isn't mismanaged" and "BliNkS sHoUlD sToP vIctImiZing BlAcKPinK." I watched their debut in real-time and saw everything. I'm so tired of them being YGE's scapegoat, and I think that will happen to the new group in a few years as well. During their debut, bigger YG fandoms like Blackjacks were awful towards BP and blamed them for 2ne1's misfortune when it was YGE. They get blamed for pretty much everything even when they're not even active or doing anything. I can't even blame Blackjacks for how they felt, since I'm 100% sure Blinks would be worse, but it was so f*cked up watching the hate train towards BP unfold in 2016-2017. It was BAD. They were getting blamed for everything since every time YGE released BP content, other YG group fans would complain of other groups being neglected. It's also so crazy how Blackpink haven't lived up to their full potential as a group. They're severely underutilized, with YGE only seeing them as a scapegoat and moneymaker. Sometimes, I can't help but wonder who tf is managing things there. I can't help but wonder if they're resentful that a GG is their main source of income instead of their male artists in the past.
I remember this one Kpop short talking about Pink Venom and I told someone that I think they should disband because their future was literally shoved down the drain by the very people who made them. Their response? "Oh, you're just pretending to care!". No. I'm making a logical response. You guys get the bare minimum and overcompensate on the high of daesangs which makes not just BP but Blinks a victim of YG Ent. You only keep going for the glamour and not the actual artists themselves. They hang the golden apple so high that you guys jump to bite it or wait for it to nearly rot & fall and then be grateful that they "fed" you. They're using your parasocial overzealousness against you. (Also there was this whole thing with TwoSet Violin that made me lose any remaining neutrality with Blinks. Honestly, please wake up.)
The last part for sure. These women are holding the entire industry on their backs and the men are big mad. That's why YG debuted TREASURE, then their stock literally dropped by 30%. Then they announced a BP comeback and it went back up 33%, I think. Point is, they need BLACKPINK, BLACKPINK doesn't need them and they're furious. I think YG is trying to "waste" their career so that they can get back to their beloved Boy Groups - despite the fact that the boys seem to respect, adore and appreciate BLACKPINK for saving their asses and taking the hit for them with the Burning Sun incident. I expected the people online to hate on BP, because the world is sexist, but I was STUNNED that I saw literally NO ONE calling for an investigation into YG boy groups. Nope. They just all blamed BP for daring to be powerful women. Nkt.
@@penguin_0172 What "crazy high horse"???? I was literally agreeing with you. 💀 And I don't recall any instances of TwoSet Violin's fans being the way they were. Everyone was literally trying to tell Blinks that the song was a parody from a parody of a classical musician. And much of the fanbase I saw said they had 0 idea who Blackpink was, so I don't understand how you're making them out to be anything you're saying, if anything I would expect it from Blinks to jump to the levels of what you're describing TwoSet's fanbase to be. Nobody has a stinkier reputation in the Kpop fandoms than Blinks. If anything, your response about what TwoSet's stuff is just showing me instantaneously that you may as well have been one of them whether or not you participated in their harassment campaign. I think's pretty ironic you say they were racist because TwoSet are Asian themselves. A racist attack on BP is a racist attack on TSV, no matter who it's targeted against. They're not real fans of TSV. And also, they really didn't make it "worse". They responded with a lack of response/comedy like they usually do. If it got Blinks more offended that's on them. And don't tell me to get off my high horse when the entire fandom only talks about BP's awards. It seems like only Blinks are the one on their high horse because it's always about "SOTY" this and that. Not even western artists have fans telling non-fans about their award history. Most people listen for music, not the artist's reputation, y'know? Don't call me an obsessed non-Blink with BP person. No, I just vehemently hate Blinks. I don't really have anything against BP and my criticism has nothing to do with hating BP, it's when this entire fanbase acts like there's nothing wrong with the group.
@@penguin_0172 I'm not calling you a psycho, I'm saying your attitude and opinion of TSV's fans are no better than the mindless hive that was the mob of people coming after them. If you truly aren't one of them I'd like you to change your opinion on TSV real quick because these are the same stupid arguments that they used to send hate towards their way. And also because that was the the point of the parody?? Did you not understand that? BP's song used a classical music sample. So the composer they're parodying who made that gets mad that artists who are using their sample "sacrilegiously" in their music (akin to a boomer). So throughout the song the other composers in the band try to convince them it's not as bad as they're making it out to be. At the end Panini changes his mind and accepts it because people will learn more about classical music. Their whole entire parody is about them being parodies of classical musicians. So they uploaded it. And they've always been artists in their own right, so why not? They've been at their entire YT careers with fragments of them playing their instruments; fans of TSV have been wanting to hear them make and play their own original music for such a long time now, and they only recently started doing that. Again, the five-member parody group of the composers are manifested visually as a Kpop group (because here in INTL communities boy groups were a thing way back in the 2010's, so now they ended up looking like a Kpop group and that's what's hot now). If you actually knew the response to the hate you'd know TSV respect BP very much (and that half the fanbase has no idea why the criticisms are the way they are because the intention was clear-cut from the get-go). If the saying "Imitation is a form of flattery" then their parody is a form of admiration in TwoSet's careers. It always has been. Also, now I think about it, the whole idea started because Mr. Teddy Park didn't interpolate the classical sample in their song correctly and it's happened with many songs so it just sparked an idea.
You could have added Le Sserafim and New Jeans. Hype knew BTS Members are going on a group "Hiatus" and announcing to enlist in the military. So you could say, because the company knew this is going to happen, they where really well prepared and the debuts where a success. But still it feels like a move to show, Hype is still a lucrative company to invest in and calming down investors. Also both groups debuted under a controversy. Le Sserafim had the bullying scandal of Garam right after the announcement. Considdering Hype never made a statement to protect Garam and kicking her out shortly before she got proven innocent, feels like puting Le Sserafim and especially Garam on the Glas Clif. And New Yeans debuted almost just minors with a creative director that already had a bad image when it comes to handling underage idols. It feels like redirecting the attention, with potential of hate, towards those two groups. Hype also announced that they will debut new boy groups right after the the situation calmed down and two girl groups already debuted. If I would have to give it a rating for me both would get a rating of 3/5, because at least they where actually prepared well and had a well managed debut leading to success. I hope this mangement continues during the next year when other (boy) groups debut.
Tf you mean hybe didn´t defend garam😑 they were literally hated bc they put garam in a jp show and the hate only went down when garam was put in hiatus don´t blame hybe when the garam scandal was 90% the kpoppies fault. Not defending hybe here but like atleast have facts that are relevant to the video there is so much more wrong with hybe than this.
HYBE got hate for defending Garam... And Min Heejin's reputation suddenly became bad just after NewJeans' debut because people (much like you) are stuck on hating HYBE. Most debuts under HYBE ended up being postponed, that's why they ended up debuting 3 groups in one year.
finally someone brings up how blackpink were treated during the burning sun scandal! i was there through all of it and it was truly depressing for blinks to see the girls being associated with something so disgusting. they had nothing to do with it but kpop stans were EVIL to them. i'll never forgive people for calling jennie "burning sun dancer" there's a special place in hell for them
You mention you wanted to talk about loona here and i totally agree they fit. BBC TRIED to do this with loona and the [0] album but failed miserably because loona is their only group (even though they are trying to debut a bg right now, following the exact formula you set out here.) And you can't distract from controversy with the group the controversy is ABOUT.
Fun fact: despite her not being added into the group yet, Yeri was in the happiness MV. In addition, the Happiness MV also had a cut out of the twin towers on 9/11.(they had to edit that out from what I remember)
before i even knew what kpop was i remember coming across ice cream cake and yeri just immediately caught my eye. like compared to the rest of the group she just looked the sweetest? i guess.
@@laily5292idk i don’t see fx’s debut as rushed. they had a really good debut and were good performers, so i think it was just a coincidence that fx debuted in 2009
@bastetowl3258 Plus, fx debuted in September, wherease JYJ case happened in July, so their debut couldn't have covered up the case. You can see the difference in red velvet debut date and fx scandal date.
omg yess someone else who noticed this!!!! saw this phenomena with aespa, newjeans and now yg's new gg. i didnt know red velvet was also a victim of this as well as a i wasnt a kpop stan when they debuted.
Just because a company has both scandal and success does not automatically qualify the situation as the phenomena under discussion here. Context and time line analysis matters 💀
@@HailToTheMeep This! A lot of people were saying that NewJeans were a cover for Garam, but that is not true. They’ve been planning the group with a different lineup since 2020, but they were delayed. I feel like Le sserafim fits more. Especially since they came right after Gfriend’s disbandment
@@HailToTheMeep -Aespa: Irene and Chanyeol scandals. I remember very clearly ppl referring to their debut as a cover up due to the timing. I genuinely didn't think they'd debut under those circumstances but alas 💀 - Newjeans: Garam scandal - Baby monster: YG company restructuring it's groups and members leaving the company. Then all of a sudden a new GG that has been a rumor for YEARS is finally announced.
Does LIGHTSUM count as a “glass cliff” group? They were debuted by Cube not long after Soojin of (G)I-dle’s scandal and removal from the group. They were clearly debuted without a set concept or direction for the group in mind and Cube recently kicked two of the members for the sake of “reorganizing” the group…seems like the whole thing was rushed and it resulted in what was likely some sort of emotional turmoil for the poor girls. I’m hoping that this next first comeback as 6 for LIGHTSUM will be their moment and that Cube has a plan in mind; these girls are way too talented to be overlooked by Cube and by fans and they deserve better. LIGHTSUM fighting!
So basically, SM wanted to wait for Yeri to grow up and to debut RV in 2015, but 'oh no- scandals!' so they launched RV as soon as they could as a distraction, WITHOUT Yeri, and added her once they could.
I really enjoyed Lightsum's music and found them juuust before the announcement of them removing two members. I'm so disappointed and sad for them. One of the worst cases I've seen of gg members being treated like pawns. Probably the most pathetic move in this entire video, even though SM keeps repeating the pattern of Scandal? New Girl Group! Although the whole BP plastic surgery ban and comments are pretty gross as well.
I was thinking about Kep1er the whole time I'm glad you mentioned them!!! Mnet definitely used them to test the waters to remake Produce. Kep1er will never have the recognition they deserve because CJ ENM just didn't put effort into them as they're only there to clean up their image.
As a longtime BlackJack I can't help but still resent Blackpink's debut. The whole "prettier version of 2NE1" was so dirty even though the girls themselves have nothing to do with it. The way they sabotaged 2NE1 while they were at the top of their hype getting billboard rankings, international features, and brand sponsorships is still WILD to me. Blackpink have that global success but surely deserved better treatment as well.
I don't really feel like this is a distraction / glass cliff, but rather them giving up on bvndit and debuting a boy group in hopes of receiving a hardcore female fanbase to earn themselves easy money. This happens a lot because companies dont know how to direct a girl group in this saturated industry and give up on them easily especially since they don't really have a target audience so its harder for them to build a fanbase. As for boy groups, they can easily achieve cult status. It just sounds like their last attempt at making success.
I think a better reason for them being a glass cliff is because Chungha is speculated to leave the company due to their mistreatment. She has been constantly begging to leave the company and talking bad about them on lives, and her recent bubble messages have been hinting at her leaving. A lot of people hate MNH for their mistreatment of Chungha, and right as she gives that hint of leaving the company 8TURN was announced.
What drives me batshit crazy, is how the entire "blackpink is the prettier 2ne1" was a dirty, dirty way of getting negative attention from YG, which in my opinion was all a big lie. Blackpink/pinkpunk was set to debut in 2012 YG said, and I repeat, that he was jealous of girls generations success, so he made a new, cool YG version of girls generation, and he said, again, that this group would contain 9 members ( just like girls generation) and would be a new girls generation, this group was today's blackpink. Blackpink had originally 9 members, but 5 members left, after YG kept on delaying their debut for four fucking years. Apart from blackpink, YG had another girl group literally called future 2ne1, and had 4 members, set to debut. Future 2ne1 members left, and pinkpunk debuted. Who was exactly blackpink, the new future 2ne1 or a new girls generation. The answer was none, it was all a way to focus all the hate on blackpink so that YG could distract the 2ne1 fans.
happy new year!! thank you so much for all your videos this year ! this reminds me of bbc , because at some point, we would stream loona's music to make the girls happy and to get wins, *for them* but now everyone knows that everything just goes straight into bbc's pocket. companies love giving you the impression you're doing it for the idols, even if the only people profiting off the fandom's dedication, are company CEOs.
Sadly this has always been true for many kpop companies if not all of them. I thought given the public knowledge of how kpop companies are structured and the many news of labour and financial abuses throughout the decades, people would be less shocked by this reality.
If Red Velvet has a million fans, I'am one of them. If Red Velvet has ten fans, I'am one of them. If Red Velvet has only one fan, that is me. If Red Velvet has no fans, I'am dead. If the world is against Red Velvet, I' am against the world
I saw extract of Mixnine YG survival show who failed in term of audience and YG called a woman being too old to debut, i remember he called 2NE1 ugly, 2NE1 didn't even know they will disband, CL, Minzy, Park Bom talked about it years later that they know their disband through the press...
4:46 I feel the need to argue that, if i recall correctly both of twice's dating scandals were brought to the public bc of some political issues happening in sk - the trending page went for political embarassment to jihyo-daniel & momo-heechul news
A company that also did this multiple times is MBK Entertainment, or formerly known as CCM. When T-ara had their scandal, they immediately debuted a sub-unit called T-ara N4. When they realized that a sub-unit wasn‘t enough to distract the public from the scandal, they debuted DIA. A group that was also ultimately destined to fail as their debut was rushed and not well thought out. They also tried to debut the short-lived girlgroup Gangkiz while Co-ed School were embroiled in a scandal. Again to no avail.
With Red Velvet, there was also the whole Jessica Leaving SNSD situation. I'm not saying that SM knew it would happen, but since she left in august/september of 2014, it was also very convenient that SM had this new group. I'm really glad RV are getting the respect they deserve now, but it really sucks that Yeri got so much less attention than the other members. I knew she wasn't popular at debut, but I didn't think it would carry on to this day. Yeri is really important to RV, and It honestly feels a little weird to watch Happiness MV without Yeri, you can tell in hindsight that something was missing.
They could have known it. Those departure decisions don't happen in the blink of an eye. There had to be previous discussions with attorneys and everything. Those discussions could have been going on for weeks or months. So they definitely knew Jessica was up to something and they debuted RV
@@cc20016 Yeah, it's definitely possible. And felt (channel owner) said in different comment that Jessica left in sept, and RV debuted in august, so it's not "directly" connected, but SM probably had inclings that something might happen. Apparently Jessica had been focusing more on her other company, and was missing practices and other scheduled stuff with SNSD, and _that_ probably happened before RV's debut.
@@JokerCroweI'm not exactly sure, but Red velvet did have their second comeback, "Be Natural," during early October. This was after Jessica got kicked out and SM stocks dropped around 6.9 billion wons. Jessica however have never missed any schedule at all. And the members kicked her out.
it feels like every big company just can't do their job, hybe with the cookie controversy, jyp feeling a bit goofy changing his emotion every damn day, sm and yg's messy management..i am genuinely scared..
You might wanna raise the score of Kep1er because the difference between them and Zerobaseone is RIDICULOUS. The way they are treated both inside and outside of the company is just disgusting. Just like expected the debut of Zerobaseone was meteoric and they performed at Gocheok Sky Dome immediately after their debut. Meanwhile, Kep1er has been given sand to build an empire with and is not even getting a real goodbye album and tour before disbandment. Babymonster also needs a score raise. They so far have been unable to carry the weight of a promising debut. I think it has proven difficult for them to carry on the 'YG sound' when Blackpink themselves are still using it. Every single they release sounds like a bad Blackpink song which is funny seeing as Teddy is not their producer. It also seems like YG himself is trying to uplift his image through the group by personally giving updates about the group in videos posted to their account and the official YG account. Their debut was definitely rushed after rumors that Blackpink would be leaving the company and since the members (individually) left stocks have been down. They did not even wait for a member on hiatus to make their debut so are now "redebuting" with said member. They were held back from promoting on any shows in the meantime and only "debuted" on TH-cam. Seems very reminiscent of the Red Velvet scenario, a group that debuted before they were ready and are missing a member. Only this time the public and fans knew of the member prior to debut.
About BLACKPINK, surely they were ready to debut at any moment, considering (G)I-DLE's Miyeon has actually stated she left because their debut kept getting delayed. (G)I-DLE almost suffered the same fate however, Minnie wanted to leave because their debut kept getting delayed, and that is why Soyeon started producing with Latata.
Long story short: the public needs to stop attacking a new group because of the company they come from. It's beyond ridiculous, even when it's clear why they're being promoted. The members didn't ask for this and just want to reach their dreams.
It’s wild to see this happen so often. As much as I love April, I really do believe that this happened to them as DSP was about to lose their biggest group, Kara, and their last hugely successful group in Korea and Japan, and when April was failing, Kard debuted, and Kard brought some attention to DSP as they began getting popular in America due to their music and personalities. It seems that April was that group but ultimately failed and DSP rushed to find something different to replace them and we can tell as April got huge hiatuses, from their hiatus between 2018 and 2020, and then their ultimate final hiatus from 2020 to 2022, where they disbanded. I feel like a lighter case of this was with 9Muses. 9Muses had debuted five years before Jewelry would disband. Now at this point, Jewelry, the company’s only successful group, had so many lineup changes and was heading on a downward spiral as 9Muses debuted. After 9Muses’ rather disappointing debut, the company debuted a boy group, and that boy group blew up. They were getting acting jobs, huge popularity, while 9Muses sat in the dust of lots of lineup changes, no opportunities outside of the group and more. Then ZE:A, the boy group, would disband in 2017, when 9Muses would go on their long hiatus that would end in disbandment. In what seemed rushed, later that year, the company debuted another girl group, which also failed as two years after their debut, the group would never have an official comeback, they released a revamped cover of their senior group’s disbandment song and then would disappear. It’s really just crazy to see how much this happens in kpop.
I’ve heard of all the harsh criticism when RV debuted. But Red Velvet be saving SME left and right. SME. Knowing Brothers. Probably more but i stanned them late 2020/ early 2021.
i rly think the same with lesserafim and new jeans, hybe had NO REASON to debut the two groups so close to each other, i still remember that new jeans stated in their tiktok that they were going to release tiktoks of them being trainees and when the whole thing with garam came up new jeans debuted SO fast, also the members are rly young, i rly think hybe was supposed to be debuting njs in 2024, not in the same months as lesserafim
I remember how awful online hate was towards Red Velvet during the first 3 ish years of their career. I love Happiness as a song but the roll out was messy. Malicious comments about their weight and looks, how people couldn't tell them apart during the Ice Cream Cake /Automatic era with the girls having their hair dyed Blonde. I still think they are under promoted since Wendy's accident in late 2019.
The fact that Red Velvet was subject to so much hate and backlash from fx stans especially, would make me thing that reveluvs would be a little empathetic. But no, they continue the vicious cycle by repeating the same hate towards aespa now.
YG misogynistic rlly shows when big bang memeber solo was announced a few days ago like they allowing everyone to collab with male but so many female artists and ggs had said they wanted collaboration with bp and never heard anything back . Not to mention they can disband bp even tho the money they've been making for them but boy gps don't have to worry abt that pressure
just feel my rhythm? ur seriously ignoring how bad boy is one of their biggest hits... then psycho. oh and dont forget "power up" got them their first PAK, in TWO days also sm's ONLY perfect all kill winner group (until aespa). (this is not an attack to u, just correcting u)
Lightsum probably should have gotten a higher grade. Cube definitely panicked and debuted them a year too early. They should have solidified their concept and identity. Now they lost two members and restructured into who knows what. And with (G)I-dle having a mega successful comeback after a year hiatus, Lightsum is out in the cold. I don’t see how they recover especially with all the strong rookie girl group competition.
I think SM takes the opportunity of the scandals to debut groups, as all eyes and media are on SM, if they debut a new group at the same time, the group will receive hate first? Probably, but this will give views for them and recognition, that will later became a big fandom, it doesn't matter much if the debut song is good or not, what really matters is put them in the industry and make them known, even under the storm.
I love Happiness but maybe it's bc I didnt discover it till way later and any weird styling or concepts was justified in my mind as "it was 2014. Even I wore ugly clothes then " lol
Apparently SM is supposed to have a new girl group soon & they're currently in a scandal... I also think Newjeans could have been in this list since they debuted around the same time garam left Lesserafim
also seeing as im a resident park bom defender, the drugs scandal wasnt anything bad. just adhd meds as the specific brand she gets in america isnt legal in korea.
I really hate how 2ne1 was treated and how blackpink was basically used as a weapon to erase them. I have no doubt that they will try to do the same with babymonster now that they seem to be having issues with Lisa and possibly some of the other girls.
Ohhh, I had no idea Red Velvet’s debut was such a mess … I think , hearing all this , that Yeri probably was always intended to be a member of the group , but they rushed the debut as a coverup and that’s ultimately why they couldn’t include her because of her age
Coming bsck to this with the recent news about bp contract renewals being up in the air and babymonster having a delayed debut, its very clear now babymonster is facing a glass cliff situation rn similar to 2ne1 where theyll use the debut to overshadow 3/4 members not renewing
Thank you for explaining this. I had only heard of the term “glass ceiling” & knew what it meant but didn’t know abt glass cliff. I am not surprised tbh since the music industry, and Korean society in general, are still very misogynistic
I absolutely hate that BlackPink were publicized as “2NE1 but pretty” because tbh it soured my enjoyment of the group for their entire run. Every bit of (well-deserved) success that they enjoyed I’d have that awful voice in the back of my head saying “see, YG was right.”
In a way, it's ironic that SM debuted Red Velvet partially to cover up what was happening with F(x) because they were on both sides of this. F(x)'s debut was launched during the DBSK/JYJ/TVXQ scandal and break up.
I’m sorry but I have to correct you on 2NE1’s plastic surgery claim. CL turned down plastic surgery as she stated, Dara has never had plastic surgery as she stayed and Minzy only had her nose done for health reason the only one that really had it was Park Bom. But other than that I love BlackPink so I’m not one of those blackjacks that dislike them because of the shady shit YG did. BlackPink is talented ❤
Same here, being a 2nd Gen stan sometimes hurt knowing Sonamoo is a clear example in being a victims of Glass Celing, especially witnessing it at that time :
the boygroups under yg, ikon especially have spoken at length abt the immense pressure to live up to bigbang* that fat cat yg was so emotionally abusive to them and he's going straight to hell for that and many many other more horrible things

@@thebstar1366 I see, thanks for responding, don't worry about the link I'll see if I can find something else myself
the worst thing about red velvet it's not only that they debuted in a time of crisis for sm, but they also redebuted with a highly controversial and sexual song such as Ice Cream Cake and redebuted with a new member , which a lot of people hated.
I think the video said FAKE clause
It's clearly fake, let's not kid ourselves about the plastic surgery topic
the fact that gidle debuted when it was announced that cube will go bankrupt arround end of 2018 and latata didn't just save idle but cube as a whole
especially when idle members said they were trained for a cute concept and that doesn't match the mv for latata
they probably made it very girl crush to give them a higher chance of succeeding and their photoshoots for the 1st album screamed low budget and rushed
i've always wondered if there was a name for this unfair phenomenon, you explained it really well
wait, correct me if I'm wrong here.
I mean, it does seem like a big enough reason to allow a girl group to start self-producing...
can you imagine the pressure on soyeon at that age
Did you not know that YG destroyed his wife career? He should have been in prison.
@@JL-jg8tr my point was, the same thing has not been done to Red Velvet. They are still thriving
I don't think it will happen to NCT either, SM seems to look after their male groups
I got pretty significant backlash when I said in a comment section that baby monster being dropped right now was nothing more than a coverup for all the bs that happened to yg in the last week or so and SO MANY people got mad at me and said that I was in the wrong when I even gave examples of it happening in the past. the thing w red velvet, it depended on what side of the kpop fandom u were on. when they debuted, i saw endless praise for the girls dancing and singing. although everyone could agree it was rushed and felt like it was to cover everything up, rarely saw people say it was a bad debut. that kinda shocked me actually.
Okay, when fans CORRECTLY THEORIZE a new group debut at the peak of a scandal, THAT’s when you know the company just doesn’t deserve to be trusted anymore.
it's actually just a bad coincidence, stop being stupid
Then debut using crowd funding or their own money.

Burning Sun Scandal comes to light: We get “The Album”
Burning Sun Scandal reaches closure in the court system: We get “Born Pink”
YGE is really just using Blackpink to cover up their failures as a company.

@pruit v3 Seems like we have a company stan here 😂 YG? Did nothing wrong? You must be new here
yg promoting/marketing blackpink pre-debut as "future 2ne1" j put them in the firing line for absolutely no reason
their music did sound like a direct knockoff of 2ne1 in the beginning and jennie and lisa were copying CL
Are they having a tour in their own name or are they part of a kpop festival setlist?
If you weren't there in 2020 I don't think you'd believe how much hate these girls got, even for a big3 debut
yeah there was also the art plagiarism .. they rlly set them up
they’re still getting hate for that 😭 it’s crazy
I remember they even were accused of ripping off (G)I-DLE's Lion concept with the concept photos where they wear crowns. Not to mention it was SO risky debuting a group right when the pandemic peaked. Aespa's debut could have been delayed to 2021 or even starting 2022 and it would have been so much better for the girls' careers.
@@cc20016 it's hilarious because that the black mamba teaser pic resemble more to Snsd the boys concept teaser than gidle's
Based off of your context of glass cliff, this is different but I think it still applies, you talked about kep1er but I want to make another point about it too:
I think groups like kep1er and ioi may fall into this? Their produce shows were the tests for mnets future girl groups, post ioi, many companies weren't sure what to do to promote their groups in a way that will make them successful bc it was the first time we've see a produce group in kpop. Kep1er also had this problem on gp999, they initially had the 3 korean, 3 chinese, and 3 japanese member plan on the show, but they later changed it after backlash, while bp999 hasn't aired, we can already see these changes that are already minimising backlash so that if there are more koreans, than global participants you can't blame mnet.
I'm just so tired of the misoginy and double standards in the industry
I hadn't heard of this concept before, but it actually makes perfect sense. I feel bad for all the groups presented in the video, but it's interesting to see that even coming from a glass cliff, Red Velvet and Blackpink survived and rose to fame, so it means being thrown out to the market as fodder isn't automatically a death sentence. I also think more recently LE SSERAFIM is a case of glass cliff, and NEW JEANS after it, but it seems HYBE is putting more hope into NJ than LS (and it sucks:(
For now I'm worried about AESPA's future as it seems SM has stopped properly promoting them...

4minute's internal name was HyunA group, she then was put in a subunit with a Beast member to promote their group, then when 4minute disbanded they used her to create hype for CLC's new sound by saying she work on production, choreography and even styling, and then with Pentagon there was TripleH.
woah thats y theres a lot of gurls in rv happiness.
You have an impressive amount of inside information; are you one of those North Korean spies sent to infiltrate K-pop?
It could have been interesting that rv concept
@NachArdi I only became one this year. That's why I didn't know
personally I think yeri was always meant to be in rv but they were forced to debut them earlier than expected and yeri was perhaps too young/not ready but I'm glad she didn't debut so young
when i was researching i was sure that the jessica scandal was another factor, but actually jessica left in september and red velvet debuted in august, so i couldn't use that as evidence. however, i actually do think there could have been internal issues happening with girls generation before the announcement of jessica's departure during august, and that could've played a part in red velvet's rushed debut, but - this is all my speculation so i left it out of the video as there is no evidence of what happened behind closed doors.
@@miss_jess idk I j guessed that maybe sm changed their Stance on debuting minors esp considering aespa debuted as all adults
But it's def rushed and unpolished compared to ICC, which would have been the perfect debut for them)
I also remember that "future 2NE1" video coming out and the comment section just being a mosh pit of anger.
Boys planet is cutting out many of the elements that girls planet made the contestants suffer through
Yeri may not be my bias but red velvet isn’t red velvet without her. And happiness is okay I like everything other title track a lot more.

Specially because I don't think BP is going to resign... They need to have a girl group ready
I can't help but wonder if they're resentful that a GG is their main source of income instead of their male artists in the past.
with how YG himself is and his past creepy actions. your more then right; he sees women as mere objects and its disgusting
And I don't recall any instances of TwoSet Violin's fans being the way they were.
Loona’s entire career and the abuse they had to deal with… deserves a video of its own
You could have added Le Sserafim and New Jeans.
In addition, the Happiness MV also had a cut out of the twin towers on 9/11.(they had to edit that out from what I remember)
before i even knew what kpop was i remember coming across ice cream cake and yeri just immediately caught my eye. like compared to the rest of the group she just looked the sweetest? i guess.
THE HAIR SHOTS!
SM vs JYJ in 2009 brought about SNSD ‘s Gee album as a distraction! Also SME always debuting a new group every time there is a scandal.
And fx debut 2009
New Jeans? what? how do they qualify?☠️
@@cupidream9702 The Garam situation
@@HailToTheMeep -Aespa: Irene and Chanyeol scandals. I remember very clearly ppl referring to their debut as a cover up due to the timing. I genuinely didn't think they'd debut under those circumstances but alas 💀
- Newjeans: Garam scandal
- Baby monster: YG company restructuring it's groups and members leaving the company.
Kep1er will never have the recognition they deserve because CJ ENM just didn't put effort into them as they're only there to clean up their image.
phenomenal video. i wonder if these dynamics will shift with the dominance of ggs in 2021/22 vs bgs which have flown under the radar…
Blackpink have that global success but surely deserved better treatment as well.
the most recent case I’ve seen of this is when mnh disbanded bvndit a few months ago, but now they’re making a new boy group…
They're making a boy group?? Yikes... And we were never really told the reasons for BVNDIT disbandment either :(
I don't really feel like this is a distraction / glass cliff, but rather them giving up on bvndit and debuting a boy group in hopes of receiving a hardcore female fanbase to earn themselves easy money.
Didn’t bvndit debut like 2021? And u know they all could’ve left willingly too since it’s not like the industry is friendly
What drives me batshit crazy, is how the entire "blackpink is the prettier 2ne1" was a dirty, dirty way of getting negative attention from YG, which in my opinion was all a big lie.
Blackpink/pinkpunk was set to debut in 2012
YG said, and I repeat, that he was jealous of girls generations success, so he made a new, cool YG version of girls generation, and he said, again, that this group would contain 9 members ( just like girls generation) and would be a new girls generation, this group was today's blackpink.
Omg I remember Jihyo being dragged into burning sun as well. She had nothing to do with it and people were adding her to the scandal
Omg I remember Jihyo being dragged into burning sun as well. She had nothing to do with it and people were adding her to the scandal
@@neb.9489 As well as the 'Golden Phone' one, of that male idol who filmed himself and other women without their knowledge
TYSM for this video! Applying the glass cliff theory to GGs in Kpop really does put a sharper lense onto a longterm issue that does a lot of damage
2NE1 Blackjack here who will NEVER support another YGE group ever again. History is set to repeat itself with Baby Monster sadly too.
So far, everything with Baby Monster has been positive. Blackpink even has been mentoring them.
it feels like every big company just can't do their job, hybe with the cookie controversy, jyp feeling a bit goofy changing his emotion every damn day, sm and yg's messy management..i am genuinely scared..
Babymonster can have a score now, and it’s not looking good😮💨 This video is so eye-opening and real btw!!!
Never knew about glass cliff, thanks for sharing.
BRILLIANT VIDEO! Thank you so much and happy new year 2023!
About BLACKPINK, surely they were ready to debut at any moment, considering (G)I-DLE's Miyeon has actually stated she left because their debut kept getting delayed. (G)I-DLE almost suffered the same fate however, Minnie wanted to leave because their debut kept getting delayed, and that is why Soyeon started producing with Latata.
such a good video, i love your analysis of this issue
Probably more but i stanned them late 2020/ early 2021.
i rly think the same with lesserafim and new jeans, hybe had NO REASON to debut the two groups so close to each other, i still remember that new jeans stated in their tiktok that they were going to release tiktoks of them being trainees and when the whole thing with garam came up new jeans debuted SO fast, also the members are rly young, i rly think hybe was supposed to be debuting njs in 2024, not in the same months as lesserafim
you're one of my favorite youtubers ever. your videos are always very insightful and different from the rest. thank you for being a creator
would definitely love to see a video abt loona! i've noticed this situation but had no idea what it's called. interesting (yet upsetting) concept
Red Velvet really did bounce back the hardest during Feel My Rhythm era ❤❤❤
just feel my rhythm? ur seriously ignoring how bad boy is one of their biggest hits... then psycho. oh and dont forget "power up" got them their first PAK, in TWO days also sm's ONLY perfect all kill winner group (until aespa).
Thank you so much for mentioning Sonamoo!
your channel deserves more views and subs
This is a yeri appreciation comment that’s my girl
Coming bsck to this with the recent news about bp contract renewals being up in the air and babymonster having a delayed debut, its very clear now babymonster is facing a glass cliff situation rn similar to 2ne1 where theyll use the debut to overshadow 3/4 members not renewing
always smile when i see ur uploads💗
Thank you for explaining this. I had only heard of the term “glass ceiling” & knew what it meant but didn’t know abt glass cliff. I am not surprised tbh since the music industry, and Korean society in general, are still very misogynistic
I absolutely hate that BlackPink were publicized as “2NE1 but pretty” because tbh it soured my enjoyment of the group for their entire run. Every bit of (well-deserved) success that they enjoyed I’d have that awful voice in the back of my head saying “see, YG was right.”
u described it perfectly honestly. i blame these stupid and capitalistic companys on any group's shortcomings atp
Before the video starts, I'm thinking of Sonamoo being debuted by TS Entertainment during the BAP lawsuit
Yess I'm a psychic
Same here, being a 2nd Gen stan sometimes hurt knowing Sonamoo is a clear example in being a victims of Glass Celing, especially witnessing it at that time :
the boygroups under yg, ikon especially have spoken at length abt the immense pressure to live up to bigbang* that fat cat yg was so emotionally abusive to them and he's going straight to hell for that and many many other more horrible things
