Think floral sprays and casket blankets. The foam blocks are usually mounted on some kind of stand or plastic base and both keep the plants hydrated and hold them in position.
You should try gym chalk! Its the same vibe as floral foam but very crunchy sounding and great for carving. You can even dye it different colors (if you let it dry) :)

i haven’t been able to find any actual research on floral foam toxicity in humans. the MSDS doesn’t say anything. i have seen some about it producing harmful microplastics. it’s also plastic and not biodegradable.
