I heard "doesn't have to be perfect", "the more irregular the better" and "works up really quickly" and thought- THIS IS FOR ME! Going to try this on my next quilt!
It IS fun, and addictive. Just use a thread that isn't too thick. I use #8, sometimes #10. I have used #5 on my grandson's quilt, but that is a little harder to pull through. Relax, put on music or maybe an audio book, and stitch away.😊
I started Big stitch quilting about 10 yrs ago. I am hooked! I use size 8 crochet thread, in coordinating colors to my quilt, and I also use curvy lines, stitching along with music It is fast, relaxing, and has the casual look that I love.
Thank you for this video, you made the stitching seem simplified. And easy to do I think I will give this a try. Maybe on a small wall hanging at first.
I have been struggling with knots and tangled thread, so I am very excited to try you no-knot technique. Now for the tangles. I am using a doubled 12 weight thread, and it knots like crazy. I have ordered some bees wax, hoping it will help. I love that big stitch look, and can't wait to see my first completed project.
Hi don't know if it helps but its just a single strand (ie no double) to use so no/relatively little knotting...the thread weight will still show up well. Can use perle threads 5 & 8 too. Julia
Thank you for idea of drawing free hand. I hand quilt because it looks homey. I wanted a little more interest. Just happens my baby quilt looks almost like your pattern. Caught my eye. Big stitch are faster. I did a queen in a week, started baby quilt yesterday. If it wasn't for thanks giving it would be done by Friday. Lol
Thank you very much for this video. I watched it about a year ago as a very new quilter. I am now going to start with the quilting on my large hand sewn quilt so I came looking for it. I hope it turns out as good as your quilt.
I am so glad I found your video. I just made a rail fence quilt top in the same colors as your quilt. I also just hand quilted for the first time another quilt “in the ditch.” I’m ready to try your pretty curvy quilt lines on my rail fence! Thank you for your video.
I used size 10 cotton, mainly because I had some left after a tatting project. And I was broke, so I couldn't buy a marking tool. I used a sliver of soap to mark on a darker quilt.
I truly loved this tutorial. I am having trouble getting my stitches to work with me since I am left handed. Please let me know if there are some tips on using Big Stitch for little squares Thanks again...
This is my first time doing the quilting by hand (I've previously had someone do them on a machine). I have no idea how much pearl cotton to purchase for a queen size quilt- any ideas? Looks like 1 spool has 87 yards. Is that enough, or should I get several spools?
Thank you for this! I'm brand new to quilting, so I've been watching as many tutorials as I can to familiarize myself with quilting from beginning to end. I don't have access to a quilting machine, nor the money to pay for someone else to do it for me. I'm getting ready to make my first quilt and I'm preparing myself to do the quilting by hand. I know it will take time, but isn't that what Autumn evenings are for? You have made this very easy to follow, and given me the confidence to say "Yes! I can do this, too!" Thank you for giving me the encouragement and confidence I was lacking! (Btw, that pink quilt you have is absolutely gorgeous! The backing material was just amazing! Usually pink quilts are very pastel, I loved this one!) Thanks again!
Zi am glad to know that hand guilting dosent have to be perfect all these years I was trying to be finally you you let’s just have fun quilting came along and confirmed I didn’t have to be
I know a lot of quilters shy away from hand quilting because they think it needs to be tiny and perfect. Just not true. We each have our own stitch style. And your family loves your style!
Thanks so much! I am doing hand quilting with out a frame/ hoop but I was confused with the needle and thread! I now know what thread but what size needle should I use?
I've been trying this method on a quilt using pearl cotton #12 and having a hard time getting the needle through all three layers of the quilt sandwich... any tips?? Thanks for the video!!
I would first try a needle with a smaller eye, if possible. If that doesn't do the trick, try 3 strands of embroidery floss to give you a smaller thickness to pull through your quilt.
If you are quilting without a hoop or frame, why do you need all the excess backing and batting? Isn't it just cut away before the quilt is bound? Just curious. This is something I haven't found much info on.
I try several different types of needles. You need a needle with a large eye AND a sharp point. If your thread with go through the eye, then it's large enough.

Thank you! Now I know how to stop and start! I love it when we can always learn new techniques 😂
Excellent tutorial. How refreshing that stitches don't have to be even. I really like how you start and end your stitching, too.
Thank you for this video, you made the stitching seem simplified. And easy to do I think I will give this a try. Maybe on a small wall hanging at first.
Thank you for your help. I would never have tried hand stitching because my stitching is not uniform or small!
i absolutly love this method! i have learn so much from you and Im not a new quilter.show me more im hungry for knowledge. Thank you so very much.
Great seeing you! Love the video! I'll recommend it to my quilt guild. Love to you, your sisters and mom. Wanda A

You are going to love big stitch as a way to finish quilts
@@QuiltShowNews you are right!
GREAT tutorial...thank you! I'm quilting some smaller pieces and the hoop was just not working...this is PERFECT!!!!
So glad you like the video!
Love it! Thank you
I use #10 crochet thread, it shows up good and easy to use

Really like this way of hand quilting.... thanks for sharing.
Fabulous and helpful tips. Thank you, Deborah!

You will love it!
I am trying this on a baby quilt. Also looking forward to the retreat in January!
Learned so much from this! Thx!
Will be fun to see how you do your stitching gun to baste!
Was watching at 6:17 and said, to myself, “wow, NOT, KNOT.” Funny hubby echoed, “Who’s there?”
So helpful. Thank you!!

I am so excited that you are brand new to quilting. It really has become my greatest creative outlet, and so much more! You can absolutely do this!
Great technique, Thanks.
Hi. Thank you for sharing. Interesting and awesome.
So glad you like it. Give Big Stitch a try!

absolutely am going to do this in my double size quilt.... thanks for the info.....:) it's a big help
I will definitely try this thanks for sharing
Do you ever use water soluble pens for marking? Great video.
Sometimes. I prefer the AirErase pens by Sewline but occasionally use a water soluble marker.
Is there a particular type of batting to use with hand quilting. I made my first quilt and it’s big and I want to do it with hand.
It’s available, but don’t know the brand name. Can you help me with this?
Using a hoop only half filled is nice near the edge of a quilt. I mean the edge of the quilt lies across the equator of the hoop
Also good for those of us whose eyesight and dexterity are not what they used to be!
💕💕💕💕!!! Definitely going to do this! Thank you!
Great! Would love to see pictures of what you make!
How close should the lines be? I’ve only quilted once, 43 years ago. 😬
Thanks so much! I am doing hand quilting with out a frame/ hoop but I was confused with the needle and thread! I now know what thread but what size needle should I use?
Use a needle that has a large eye and a sharp point. Darning needles may not work because they often have a blunt point.
Wondering how you'd quilt a jelly roll quilt?
Thank you Thank youuuu
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
What size needle do you use?
Thank you, Karen Sorenson
I use many different needles. They need to have a large eye to thread, and a sharp point.

do you have to make sure the batting and the backing is 3-5 inches larger than the quilt top like you do if you are quilting on a machine?
Absolutely. You prepare your quilt sandwich exactly the way you would if you were going to quilt by machine.

@@sabrinazarogoza8686 the fabric draws up on itself as you quilt. The excess covers the shrinkage.
What size needle did you use?

Awww, why is this video unavailable? :(
Have you incorporated both traditional and big stitch in a quilt? If so did you like it?
I have not yet mixed traditional and big stitch. If you try it, I'd love to see it!
