This documentary was filmed in filmed over the summer of 2019 before the pandemic hit. The whole crew, myself included, was operating under the guidance of Steven Albrezzi and Anqi Sylvia Wang.
I enjoyed watching the documentary so much! What struck me most was the genuine nature of the people - none of the pretentiousness that plagues the rich and privileged.
Well, to clarify- there are lots of people using paint…but they are not necessarily artists. This word” artist” has lost its meaning. To be more clear making copies of masters for sale is not art.
Love this, and feel the solidarity of artists. In America life is intolerable and I feel art is a powerful response. But it is overwhelming, the grotesque RESET.
Its ok to copy to learn the style and technique, but to copy and make money out of other creativity is morally wrong, even thought you need to put food on the table. What happen if you become famous one day and someone copy your artworks flooding the market? Problem is copyright doesn't exist in China.
As I have noticed watching on social media so called artists copy very, very much. I wouldn't call them artists - they are creatives. Unfortunately wider population are being encouraged to copy other people's work (and think that is ok) by the all those "talent" shows. Every contestant is copying somebody's else. Just see those singers contestants...they all mimic someone's else songs. Those shows shouldn't be called "talent" shows...what are they? Talent for copying?
This is one of the reasons that I have photos of beautiful landskapes instead of paintings in my flat. I don't know if you use those calendars with a new colour photo for every month from all corners of China, but you have some fantastic sceneries out there.
There was one Van Gogh and only one. China is great for imitation. Mass producing other masters. Their art has been stuck in the Twelfth century. If China were to open their doors to the world. Young Chinese artist would be able to flourish and maybe, just maybe, create some new and different.

Thanks for showing us these vivid faces
There are so many creative, amazing people in China.
There are so many artists around the world.
Being able to paint doesn’t make you an artist, you are however a painter: oil, watercolour, acrylic etc. strangely
@@sararichardson737: May I know...in your opinion who is the artist?

God gives food to those who are not hungry....so often the gift of painting is squandered.......

All great artists began by copying others! And Van Gogh's art is now in the public commons, I think.
4:48 this is not an artist. This is a mess-maker. Sorry, someone had to say it.

I wish it was in English. At least subtitles in English.
Subtitles have been added. Thank you for pointing it out! I know the embedded subtitles can be a little difficult to read, sorry about that 😅
I see the sun titles
