I’m Chinese and I live in Shenzhen, and I go to Dafen to paint every weekend just for fun. There are so many beautiful paintings, surrounded by them makes me feel good.

Video taking like what you do could help tourists to visit their village and hopefully purchase many pieces. They should go around and sell their work. Art materials as we all know are not cheap (well there are), I mean, inexpensive. I do some art works, jut minor ones so I understand the frustration and other emotions of artists. Scientist have a big place artists not that much except for media.
They are talented that's why they can reproduce artworks of other artists refrence is not bad at all .you can't draw everything from your mind sometimes it's okay to you refrence.again they are talented and amazing.
Nice, I got a painting of my two boys from Dafen around 7 years ago. Email them a picture, paid around £100 and got it a few weeks later. If you paid more l would get a more experience artist. Really happy with the work and it's been on wall ever since.
Dafen is a place full of this kind of sweet stories. They not only have easily reproductions, also have such special painting commissions which all have stories behind them, just like you.
One person asked if there was a copy of a Warhol, and yes, I saw the same thing.....looked like a painted reproduction of one of the "marilyn silkscreen prints. Anyway, a totally interesting part of China, and being a painter myself, loved the video.

The villagers of that place is China is good, established, establishes plenty of their works of art in many countries, villages as well,that houses and preserves GDP of a lifetime. It always does the work continuously and makes wonders of appreciation, the way they value textile, manufacturing, designs, pottery and 3D making. They are no boundaries when it comes to works of arts, it works in so many ways that even the young treasures. Priceless moments. Preserved.

Hey! Thanks! I don't know what tips I could give you. I don't consider myself that good and, you know, videos allow editing. The only tip I could give you is to practice again and again. And maybe record yourself so you can listen or watch it later to see what you can improve.
There are a couple of depressing parts to Defin. One is the way that this art copying economy has followed classic capitalist economic models and human social trends, resulting in the profit margin being driven down to the lowest possible amount. And who benefits? Not the craftsman, as the video makes clear, but the multi billion dollar corporations who get art rediculouly cheap, the middlemen who take massive shipments overseas and jack up the price seversl thousand percent with no royalty back to the makers, and ultimately the much better off tourist who could afford to pay ten times more. So it is depressing that skilled producers get the short end of the stick again. And depressing that not once in the video was there mention or hint that maybe giving up a little freedom and getting organized as a trade union, or get permission to form a guild or consortium or union to stabilize profits would be a good idea. Lastly, they are thieves without compunction. While much of the work may not be outright copyright viloation, they are making a living (so to speak) by stealing the intellectual proprty, the genius of others, or other cultural heritages. What is depressing is that the buyers have all the money to buy art but are too crass and base and cheap to know how to buy original art, and the trades people just want to exploit that market . Two peas in a pod, leaving the people and cultures who actually invented the original work out in the cold. That's depressing

It's not healthy ;) You raised a few good points, but overall you seem to be guessing on a lot of things like who the buyers are and this idea of forming a union or a guild. It seems like you know very little about this place, about their doings and most likely about China in general. Sometimes it's better to actually dig and learn more rather than let your assumptions get the best of your mood.
well, yes, I know very little about this place. I am giving my reactions to the video. I did read a couple of online articles as well written within the last year about Dafen. But didn't the video (and this article, www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-village-60-worlds-paintings-future-jeopardy ) make clear that the artists and small companies of artists basically sell wholesale to distributors (who are wealthier than they are) and multi national companies worth billions of dollars, at ridiculously low prices? AND that the prices the copy artists are charging are no longer enough to live on. Where I live I see this artwork for sale. a nice flower painting the distributor paid $1.20 for sells here for $79. That is 66 times markup. I am guessing that its is the same everywhere else. As to the idea of organizing, yes I understand that this is China and a different culture. It is a diverse and enormous culture and a huge country. It was a deliberately provocative idea. But I will stand by the idea that exploiting others for wealth and power is wrong, which was my point. Dafen appears to be a wonderful synergy of business opportunity, talented workers and timing. But its success and now gradual decline has also proven that Dafen is like a headless giant lurching into an uncertain future.
Well that's the reality of pretty much every business, where bosses will make much more than skilled technicians. Nothing new here. Do you think the Nike sneakers you wear cost anywhere close to the $150 you paid for them. I don't know what you do for a living, but people being exploited for others wealth is the majority of the world. I used to work in retail. The amount of money I brought to the company in sales versus the minimum wage and pathetic commission I was getting is absurd. And I could give you an endless list of examples. Slavery unfortunately still exists in different places around the world. But from what I've seen so far, most Chinese factory workers as well as those painters are quite free. A lot of people quit their job during Chinese New Year because they want to go back and spend time in their home town. Then they will find another job when they need money again. I'm not saying that this village is paradise. All I'm saying is that some people choose to use their skills and talents to work for a rate that's low but steady while others will take the gamble of maybe becoming successful by creating their own work... Or live like a poor but free bum forever. They are not chained slaves. It's the same almost everywhere. I make videos. I try to be as independent as possible and push my own creations hoping to, one day, be able to live comfortably making projects I'm proud of while I currently accept my very humble and unstable lifestyle. On the other hand, I know some videographers and editors that are far more technically skilled than I am, but they choose to work for companies to make boring videos for a very average rate. They are worth much more in my opinion. Should we feel depressed for them? Maybe they do not have this ambition, maybe they have amazing technical skills (like those painters) but no imagination or storytelling skills, or maybe they rather get a steady paycheck each week and not have to worry about the next gig or the next month.
I hope I will have the chance to go back to the Philippines soon. I went there 10 years ago and I loved it. I hope to go back and make some videos about it.
It was kind of sad for me. 99% are copies of magazine pictures and famous artists, etc. In addition, many only work as machines to deliver orders in quantities of 1000 to 5000 copies all made by hand to be sold as souvenir in Europe for 10x the original price.
Well it was less than 99%. There are some artist making their own art. Then you have to look at it as a craft or a technical skill. Only a few lucky talented people in the world manage to make a living creating original work. Most artist or technically skilled people end up using their skills for repetitive work for clients no matter what the media is. I bet most of them would rather make a living painting reproductions there than working in an actual factory not using the skills they developed. As for the profit margin, how much do you think your sneakers cost to make compared to the $150 you pay for?
More like a town of counterfeit, it's sad, that so many people with a good technique have to create a tons of reproductions. I think it's because of customers, who, for some reason, rather would buy a reproduction, than a traditional chinese art or just the original work of chinese artist, which is sad, because I know many talanted chinese artists with original and interesting works
@Antoine Cunningham yeah, I know, but, I think, it would be better, if people (actually customers) were more interested in the works of young artists, rather than buying and buying and buying reproductions of old masterpieces over and over again, I understand why these artists don't go further than copying, because it's the only way to get money for them, the market don't give a chance to earn money on your own art, it's the global problem
Greatest artist... America doesn't generally want war. The general population is lead to believe that we are freeing people from oppression. Take Saddam Husein as an example; he tortured innocent people with no recourse in his prisons. America has prisons, we lock people away, but the population generally agrees with the terms, and if someone is done wrong or abused, a news or media source jumps on it or the family of the person shouts the injustice... At least its known and senators and governors get removed from office if needed. With Saddam, people would never hear from their loved ones, no one dare speak about it and Saddam would have reigned indefinitely. ... or so we were told. I never personally went to another country to see these injustices so cannot speak first hand. Im sure there are other interests, like oil, at stake. America is driven by wealth... as are all capitalist based systems. 99% of the people I know do not want war, but if they hear or see the inherent freedoms and rights of people being oppressed, there is a spirit of justice that Americans have. We truly believe in equality. We feel every human on Earth should be free to pursue happiness if it doesn't infringe on the inalienable rights of others. We are willing to sacrifice our selves to deliver the oppressed from their chains. Consider the civil war... 300,000 non slaves sacrificed their lives to free slaves and make America a free nation. Again, we may have been lied to about Iraq and the middle east. Lied to about injustices that don't actually happen,... but if they were happening, U.S. soldiers tried to do what they thought was right to help free an oppressed people, setup government infrastructure for democracy, and give the country control back to the local population in hopes they would desire democracy or a republic that guarantees individual rights and freedoms. That is the American belief. (The potential of Americans to believe these lies, will diminish as these countries develop internet. If there is no evidence, and the population of these "oppressed" countries are truly NOT oppressed, and they make it known to Americans via the internet, then Americans will be very hesitant to blindly go to war, when the entire country is saying they don't need or want help. The news media is a fascinating mechanism. If it goes against the grain, the news story will be huge! Breaking news!!! the first to release new truths will get the best ratings. Its in the news medias best interest to expose government coverups or lies. So technology and the internet will help establish truth about countries the U.S. is considering going to war with/for. Also note... the news media is protected from the government via the bill or rights, freedom of press. The government cannot demand what is or is not broadcast to the public. If a news media becomes bias, the population will slowly veer away and consider the source not credible. This happens constantly.)
Some people want a replica painting of a Van Gogh. Its like getting a poster of a Van Gogh, just a higher quality version of a poster. Where there is demand, there is a job that can support a family. I don't see anything wrong with painting replicas, as long as its clear that they are replicas.

@@GLOBIK Understood. As with everything in China, the prices are extremely inflated, especially for tourists. A good bargainer could probably walk away with a decent copy dirt cheap. I see a lot of this work on EBAY and I always wonder where it's made. Thanks for an interesting vid.
@@blakelycreative3171 Well this is less and less true as a lot of Chinese people have more money than the average foreigner there. It's just a matter of knowing the culture and the market. The price will most likely depend on the technical difficulty of the piece requested and how many times they have reproduced it before. As for originals, it's a very different ball game, no matter which country you're in. Glad you found the video interesting.
"What is art?" -That is usually the question posed after watching paint being smeared on canvases. After seeing this I ask myself: "What is creativity?"
Deep question. I think it mostly relies on the intention. If someone uses a paint brush with the intention of creating something unique, redefining what art can be or simply expressing an idea, a feeling or a story for example. It's quite different from someone who uses a paint brush to replicate someone else's work with the unique intention of making money. But then the line is blurry. How to consider orchestra musicians, for exemple, who spend most of their time playing again and again the same notes that were composed by someone else hundreds of years ago?
Some of these paintings look very similar in style to Francoise Neilly. Specifically @.1:27. Are some these knockoffs or are they selling them as their own creation?
As I mentioned at the end of the video, a lot of the paintings you see there are indeed copies/reproductions, but some artists sell their own original work.
No worries. I mentioned it in the form of a short written comment on the video because I was so mind blown by this place at first, that I only realized while editing the footage that a lot of those were copying and reproducing famous paintings.
on the other hand, if you wanted a hundred perfect copies of your own work, which you could then touch up and sell, just like Thomas Kinkade used to do (except he had his originals giclée printed at about fifty times the price), this is the place to go. Except you couldn't trust the place not to rip off your work the moment you left town...

You raised a few good points, but overall you seem to be guessing on a lot of things like who the buyers are and this idea of forming a union or a guild. It seems like you know very little about this place, about their doings and most likely about China in general. Sometimes it's better to actually dig and learn more rather than let your assumptions get the best of your mood.
well, yes, I know very little about this place. I am giving my reactions to the video. I did read a couple of online articles as well written within the last year about Dafen. But didn't the video (and this article, www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-village-60-worlds-paintings-future-jeopardy ) make clear that the artists and small companies of artists basically sell wholesale to distributors (who are wealthier than they are) and multi national companies worth billions of dollars, at ridiculously low prices? AND that the prices the copy artists are charging are no longer enough to live on. Where I live I see this artwork for sale. a nice flower painting the distributor paid $1.20 for sells here for $79. That is 66 times markup. I am guessing that its is the same everywhere else. As to the idea of organizing, yes I understand that this is China and a different culture. It is a diverse and enormous culture and a huge country. It was a deliberately provocative idea. But I will stand by the idea that exploiting others for wealth and power is wrong, which was my point. Dafen appears to be a wonderful synergy of business opportunity, talented workers and timing. But its success and now gradual decline has also proven that Dafen is like a headless giant lurching into an uncertain future.
Well that's the reality of pretty much every business, where bosses will make much more than skilled technicians. Nothing new here. Do you think the Nike sneakers you wear cost anywhere close to the $150 you paid for them. I don't know what you do for a living, but people being exploited for others wealth is the majority of the world. I used to work in retail. The amount of money I brought to the company in sales versus the minimum wage and pathetic commission I was getting is absurd. And I could give you an endless list of examples.
Slavery unfortunately still exists in different places around the world. But from what I've seen so far, most Chinese factory workers as well as those painters are quite free. A lot of people quit their job during Chinese New Year because they want to go back and spend time in their home town. Then they will find another job when they need money again.
I'm not saying that this village is paradise. All I'm saying is that some people choose to use their skills and talents to work for a rate that's low but steady while others will take the gamble of maybe becoming successful by creating their own work... Or live like a poor but free bum forever. They are not chained slaves. It's the same almost everywhere. I make videos. I try to be as independent as possible and push my own creations hoping to, one day, be able to live comfortably making projects I'm proud of while I currently accept my very humble and unstable lifestyle. On the other hand, I know some videographers and editors that are far more technically skilled than I am, but they choose to work for companies to make boring videos for a very average rate. They are worth much more in my opinion. Should we feel depressed for them? Maybe they do not have this ambition, maybe they have amazing technical skills (like those painters) but no imagination or storytelling skills, or maybe they rather get a steady paycheck each week and not have to worry about the next gig or the next month.

I hope I will have the chance to go back to the Philippines soon. I went there 10 years ago and I loved it. I hope to go back and make some videos about it.
It was kind of sad for me. 99% are copies of magazine pictures and famous artists, etc. In addition, many only work as machines to deliver orders in quantities of 1000 to 5000 copies all made by hand to be sold as souvenir in Europe for 10x the original price.
Well it was less than 99%. There are some artist making their own art. Then you have to look at it as a craft or a technical skill. Only a few lucky talented people in the world manage to make a living creating original work. Most artist or technically skilled people end up using their skills for repetitive work for clients no matter what the media is. I bet most of them would rather make a living painting reproductions there than working in an actual factory not using the skills they developed. As for the profit margin, how much do you think your sneakers cost to make compared to the $150 you pay for?

More like a town of counterfeit, it's sad, that so many people with a good technique have to create a tons of reproductions. I think it's because of customers, who, for some reason, rather would buy a reproduction, than a traditional chinese art or just the original work of chinese artist, which is sad, because I know many talanted chinese artists with original and interesting works
@Antoine Cunningham yeah, I know, but, I think, it would be better, if people (actually customers) were more interested in the works of young artists, rather than buying and buying and buying reproductions of old masterpieces over and over again, I understand why these artists don't go further than copying, because it's the only way to get money for them, the market don't give a chance to earn money on your own art, it's the global problem
I understand people who cant buy the real thing and just buy a reproduction. But passing it off as an original should be illegal.

Greatest artist... America doesn't generally want war. The general population is lead to believe that we are freeing people from oppression. Take Saddam Husein as an example; he tortured innocent people with no recourse in his prisons. America has prisons, we lock people away, but the population generally agrees with the terms, and if someone is done wrong or abused, a news or media source jumps on it or the family of the person shouts the injustice... At least its known and senators and governors get removed from office if needed.
With Saddam, people would never hear from their loved ones, no one dare speak about it and Saddam would have reigned indefinitely.
... or so we were told.
I never personally went to another country to see these injustices so cannot speak first hand.
Im sure there are other interests, like oil, at stake. America is driven by wealth... as are all capitalist based systems. 99% of the people I know do not want war, but if they hear or see the inherent freedoms and rights of people being oppressed, there is a spirit of justice that Americans have. We truly believe in equality. We feel every human on Earth should be free to pursue happiness if it doesn't infringe on the inalienable rights of others. We are willing to sacrifice our selves to deliver the oppressed from their chains.
Consider the civil war... 300,000 non slaves sacrificed their lives to free slaves and make America a free nation.
Again, we may have been lied to about Iraq and the middle east. Lied to about injustices that don't actually happen,... but if they were happening, U.S. soldiers tried to do what they thought was right to help free an oppressed people, setup government infrastructure for democracy, and give the country control back to the local population in hopes they would desire democracy or a republic that guarantees individual rights and freedoms.
That is the American belief.
(The potential of Americans to believe these lies, will diminish as these countries develop internet. If there is no evidence, and the population of these "oppressed" countries are truly NOT oppressed, and they make it known to Americans via the internet, then Americans will be very hesitant to blindly go to war, when the entire country is saying they don't need or want help. The news media is a fascinating mechanism. If it goes against the grain, the news story will be huge! Breaking news!!! the first to release new truths will get the best ratings. Its in the news medias best interest to expose government coverups or lies. So technology and the internet will help establish truth about countries the U.S. is considering going to war with/for. Also note... the news media is protected from the government via the bill or rights, freedom of press. The government cannot demand what is or is not broadcast to the public. If a news media becomes bias, the population will slowly veer away and consider the source not credible. This happens constantly.)

Some people want a replica painting of a Van Gogh. Its like getting a poster of a Van Gogh, just a higher quality version of a poster. Where there is demand, there is a job that can support a family. I don't see anything wrong with painting replicas, as long as its clear that they are replicas.

@@GLOBIK Understood. As with everything in China, the prices are extremely inflated, especially for tourists. A good bargainer could probably walk away with a decent copy dirt cheap. I see a lot of this work on EBAY and I always wonder where it's made. Thanks for an interesting vid.
@@blakelycreative3171 Well this is less and less true as a lot of Chinese people have more money than the average foreigner there. It's just a matter of knowing the culture and the market. The price will most likely depend on the technical difficulty of the piece requested and how many times they have reproduced it before. As for originals, it's a very different ball game, no matter which country you're in.

After seeing this I ask myself: "What is creativity?"
Deep question. I think it mostly relies on the intention. If someone uses a paint brush with the intention of creating something unique, redefining what art can be or simply expressing an idea, a feeling or a story for example. It's quite different from someone who uses a paint brush to replicate someone else's work with the unique intention of making money.
But then the line is blurry. How to consider orchestra musicians, for exemple, who spend most of their time playing again and again the same notes that were composed by someone else hundreds of years ago?

Some of these paintings look very similar in style to Francoise Neilly. Specifically @.1:27. Are some these knockoffs or are they selling them as their own creation?
As I mentioned at the end of the video, a lot of the paintings you see there are indeed copies/reproductions, but some artists sell their own original work.

on the other hand, if you wanted a hundred perfect copies of your own work, which you could then touch up and sell, just like Thomas Kinkade used to do (except he had his originals giclée printed at about fifty times the price), this is the place to go. Except you couldn't trust the place not to rip off your work the moment you left town...
