Since Stewpot died, I've done Junior Choice on my local radio station every Boxing Day, complete with clips of him and the 'Ello Darlin' clip, plus everything from My Brother to Ernie, Nellie the Elephant, My Boomerang Won't Come Back and Boom Oo Yatta Ta Ta. All brilliant memories. We've lost so many radio legends, we have to keep them in our memories.

I used to listen to Junior Choice every Saturday and Sunday Mornings in my childhood in the 1970s. Absolutely brilliant.

absolutely amazing, what an incredible recording to get by accident - I was actually listening to this live, I remember the kid saying it and then I remember it becoming Ed's jingle for years

I remember it too. I was 10 in 1973 so Junior Choice was my favourite weekend radio programme.

Barry Roach The truth to the Allo darlin jingle is a bit controversial as the Junior Choice producer was not so good at keeping perfect records of where and when certain interviews actually took place.
A number of years after the original Allo Darlin jingle was recorded on a children’s hospital ward Ed Stewart began the search to try find the boy.
Three boys came forward, one in England and two in Jersey, Channel Islands.
As the boys had aged a few years their voices had broken and it was therefore very difficult for the sound engineers to determine which of the boys was the actual boy on the original recording?
It was eventually decided that it was the boy from Billericay, Essex. However, I can remember clearly listening to the original Jersey hospital visit and the children being interviewed. I actually knew two of the boys.
One boy by the name of Mark Shales said Allo darlin, another boy by the name of Shane Le Moniure then giggles.
The original recording was in fact the two Jersey boys.
If you listen to the boy giving the address of where his girl friend lived he says, 5 Kensington Place. You will find that street is actually in St. Helier, Jersey, not in Billericay, Essex. The street in Billericay is actually Kensington Gardens

Always enjoyed Junior Choice. But my Mum was a bit miffed once when Stewpot inserted that clip into an early Dr Hook hit. "Sylvia's mother says ... 'ELLO DARLIN!'".

So, were those two Jersey boys both in Billericay hospital at that time? (Some 280 odd miles from home) it's possible but doesn't sound as likely as a local lad.

    • @peterbothwell9005

@@stevecribbs9247 they were in St Helier hospital, not In Billericay. I think you have misread my comments.

@@peterbothwell9005 I was misled by the video saying that it was Billericay, and that the accent sounded like a London one, which is common in Essex. If you knew the actual boys and the hospital was local, I suppose you would have had a clearer memory of the broadcast, as it would have resonated more because of that.

    • @peterbothwell9005
      @peterbothwell9005 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Maybe it sounds like that because the boy Ed is talking to and prompting to say something to his girlfriend is not actually the boy that says Ello Darlin. It was in fact a cheeky intervention by another boy by the name of Mark. In addition, the cheeky laugh is also another boy by the name of Shane.
I know all this because I was listening at the time and I knew the boys.
