    That looks soooooo good! I used to make that when everyone was home. I didn't use tomatoes so it made a nice brown gravy and I cooked it in a Dutch oven on top of the stove with plenty of onions. It was a real hit.

    Loved the Swiss Steak my other made when I was a kid, and I've made it before, not too bad. I used this recipe (more-or-less) and I think it was the best Swiss Steak anybody has ever made. Best. Ever. :) Changes: used Sherry instead of vermouth, skipped the Ground Mustard and Worchestershire since I had none, used bottled chopped garlic, and beef bullion instead of broth. Diced tomatoes with mild chilies, 'cause that's what I had. Simmered 90 minutes. The meat, which was bottom round steak, was as tender as any cut of beef I've ever eaten, and the sauce/gravy was delicious. Served with cottage fries and a fresh salad.

      Thank you for your kind words, thank you very much! I love your using Sherry, I think that is a brilliant idea and all your changes sounds fine with me. Glad you like this.

    I wash mushrooms too, I just make sure they don't sit in water and soak it up, but a good quick rinse makes sense to me too.

    That thing your using is called a Jaccard...they work great for anything, even chicken...got mine on E-Bay it has 48 blades. My husband and I were out and had a steak sandwich at this club. The chef came out and asked how our steak sandwichs were and I told him that I've never had a sandwich that tender in my life, at that point I asked him how did you get this steak sooo tender in such a short time and he told me to get a jaccard, the more blades the better. So 48 blades is a nice one to have

    Magnificent! Your Swiss Stake looks tender & delicious. I have not prepared Swiss Stake for years. I like the device/tool you have for preparing the stake. Many years ago my husbands dad knew the chef at the Gentleman Jim's Restaurant located in Lower South River near Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. When he prepared his Swiss Stake he pounded the flower into the stake using the back of a large knife blade. It was quite the exercise and he used a second application of flour. I often wondered what purpose the pounding of the stake accomplished. Perhaps it was just another way to make it tender. Thankyou so much for sharing your recipe and I wish you many happy times in your kitchen.

I just bought a Ninja so I assume that since I can brown and use as a crock pot that I could amend the recipe to work in that. I also wash my mushrooms, all the chef's say to just wipe with a damp rag but I really feel the need to get my mushrooms cleaner then that, so I run them under cold water a few seconds and rub them really fast with my fingers, then dry then fast. I don't know what the big deal is with not getting them wet, I've been washing mushrooms all my life and they taste tender to me, not stopping anytime soon. You just keep on washin them too, at least we know they are clean, keep making them video's

    That round steak has a good amount of marble. My mom used to make this (her own version, of course), and she would buy the cubed steak from the meat dept. Basically a tenderized round steak ready-to-go. In fact, this particular recipe is going to be one of my very first cooking videos when I get started. Thanks for all of your nice ideas. :) --- also, I'[m glad you didnt load it down with msg.

  • @camthemam235
    @camthemam235 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    My mom cooked it in a cast iron skillet for two hours covered on low. She tenderized Swiss or round steaks with the edge of a plate after coating it with flour, salt & pepper first. Brown steaks first, don’t burn the onions. She also used Lambrusco, Tom paste & catsup. Sounds gross tasted amazing.

    I have an old old recipe for Swiss steak from you probably 2025 years old I believe I got it when I lived on the west side, and I wanted to see someone else make it as well. This came to closest to yours more broth color than so much diced tomatoes And it looks about the same. I would omit the mushrooms that’s me and I would have to look up how much carbs in washer, sire sauce, and less onions but obviously this looks really good and then he puts it at the end into the crockpot. what a great way to get to tenderize because I’ve gotten rid of my. It was my mom’s old meat tenderizer in a little hammer so this made me think of you for the recipe you gave me. .🥰

    This reminds me of my mom's recipe - though my Dad wouldn't allow garlic in the house and my mom hated Oregano, and I don't think my mom used mushrooms either. I remember her pounding the steak with a butcher knife. It wouldn't occur to her to ask the butcher to tenderize it for her. Your recipe looks wonderful. Just the right amount of sauce and the steak was fork tender! I'll have to make this for Sunday dinner. Though I'll probably pop it in the oven to braise. I'm way too impatient for a crock pot.

    Where in the world do you find round steak? I haven't seen it in years. My dad made swiss steak with bone in round steak (similar to your recipe) and we loved it.
    I wash my mushrooms too, but only just before I use them. Mushrooms and moisture don't mix when it comes to storage. I also store them in paper towel...get rid of the plastic...and they will keep for a week.
