@@justtowatch111 fair assessment. I just look at the speed, precision, and power of Kellys surfing and I dont think anyone else comes close. Leo Fioravanti is a top level pro. He rips! But his top turn/snap and Kelly's are on two different levels, but I think they usually get scored the same.
@@kevinm5564 Yeah, Kelly does pull off more rad turns but the problem is maybe that he makes it look so easy?. Just imagine being a surf contest judge though, everyone and their dog would be on your case on every wave you scored because it's so subjective!.

They did an analysis in the early 2000's of publicity and event placings and found a DIRECT correlation between the amount of media coverage a surfer received (magazine articles, ads, video releases - remember this is before the internet really got involved in surfing) in the month preceding a contest and their eventual finishing place in that event. That is to say - the more publicity a surfer received prior to an event, the higher they would finish in that event. This may have been unconscious on the part of the judges, they're humans too. One explanation was that, with more of a spotlight on a surfer, people - and judges - would be inclined to pay more attention to them and thus score them higher. Also that crowds might pay more attention and cheer louder to the surfers that they are more aware of and that the judges might be influenced by that, even unconsciously.
