When growing up my neighbors where from Scotland, had a encyclopedia in Gaelic and the Mum and Dad spoke Gaelic , they where the family 'Craig' they had the most beautiful super fluffy tortoiseshell cat called 'Whiskey' - the Dad always called me 'son' , I still remember him smoking a pipe and being a wonderful loving man.

In Scotland, people often refer to close males as "son" and close females as "hen". This can be anyone your peer or junior, friend or family, but never someone older than you. Nice to hear that Scottish quirks still show up on the other side of the world!

@@luxfer7794! Are you familiar with authentic history? Do you pronounce "Edinburgh" as eden-burra,
which means "The Eden of the North"? Do you know the history of the Jewish political refugees,
who fled after the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth? They came to our island and went further,
calling themselves The Hebredis Islands, meaning being of Hebrew.
Scots occupied the northern part of the Irish island, but when the Irish developed a warring
chieftain clan system, they sold and moved to the Scottish island.
You should find The General Scottish Register and The Royal Scottish Register, created by
those "Christian" Jewish refugees when they arrived, to account for everyone born since.

    English Translation:
I'm often searching on the highest hilltop
    Trying to find the boatman
Will you come tonight or tomorrow?
If you don't come at all, I'll be distraught
    Sèist: Chorus (after each verse):
    Oh boatman 'sna horo eile
    Oh boatman 'sna horo eile
    Oh boatman 'sna horo eile
My best wishes go with you wherever you may be
    My heart is broken, bruised
Often tears are running down my cheeks
Will you come tonight or will I wait up for you
But close the door, sighing heavily?
My love promised me a dress of silk
He promised me that and a gray tartan
A gold ring where I'd see my reflection
But I'm afraid he has forgotten
I will be forever tearful and dejected
Like a wild swan wounded and broken
Wailing its song of death on some weedy pond
Left by the others, alone and abandoned

If you see this song written English, you will see that it was written by a young woman, watching for her lover's boat to return to her island in the Hebrides, and wondering if ever they would get married. In fact they did eventually marry, so she needn't have worried. However, she wrote us a beautiful song that has enthralled millions of people over the years, and will continue to do so.

@@fodge5395 The Anglo-Saxon kingdoms did terrible things to their neighbours, and this sadly carried on well into the previous century. But if there's one thing I know, it's that progress can never be made whilst people still cling on to past grievances, and deliberately keep wounds open. The time of kingdoms is over, and as a Scottish person, it disappoints me when scots get on their nationalistic high-horse. I'm not motivated by religious or cultural biases, but I do know that united, the British isles forged the largest empire the world has ever seen. Unity means strength, and I can honestly say in the last 200 years Scotland has had very little to complain about as part of Britain. So I can only surmise that the SNP and their ilk are simply playing on minor complaints and nationalistic impulses to gain political power.

@@HolyMith Well all humans have done terrible things to each other, I could say just as well the Danes did terrible things to the Anglo-Saxons but it means very little in the grand scheme of it. But I agree, the SNP have a false guise of nationality but they're not real patriots and they play on it to gain fervour. Nicola Sturgeon gives me the impression she doesn't even like her own country, she just hates England more.

Thomas Gauk I am bearing in mind this is a rather old comment, but I completely agree with you. The people who listen to that stuff who are in my class are out doing drugs, smoking, drinking and "other stuff" however I hate that music and instead of doing that, I took up art, guitar, singing and I am learning Gaelic. We are a brainwashed society of aimless zombies who can no longer enjoy the beauty of this music. One day I plan to leave England for my home isle, Skye. Thank you for being another deep spirit who appreciates my roots!

My family were also Jacobites. It pains me when people say we aren't Scottish. My family fought for their freedom whether someone agrees with it or not. Then forcibly evicted from their ancestral lands. I am proud to have two distinct sides to my family, one American and one Scottish. The '45 was beyond a tragedy, the least that someone could do is let the descendants of Jacobites call themselves by the nationality they love and spend every waking day learning about.

Saying it isn't magic and then citing -another- matter of opinion to support the statement doesn't a very solid statement make. If our culture were destroyed by the British, it wouldn't be here. Putting out a candle is meaningless if you take a flame to the wick again after.
If I had to choose between the response of "This is completely normal" and "This is magic", with no middle grounds to be had, then, quite. This would be magic. o~o

If you’re happy that justifies the Highland Clearances (or any of the other sins of the British Empire, such as the Opium Wars) I beg to differ.

So we now know 47 people on this earth have literally no ears. I've grown up with Gaelic music as a huge influence and support mechanism. When I was just tiny my family lived in a tiny village (Roskill) on the Isle of Skye. They ran the guest house until they moved down to the north east. Many times I've visited Scotland but when I'm not there there is a hole in my soul that was left knowing I cannot be in Scotland. I began learning Gaelic and one day I plan to live back on the Hebrides. I hate the north east, I am an outcast, and no one believes in Scottish because I've lived with my mum my whole life and she has a very British accent I seem to have inherited. This beautiful song always brings a tear to my eye as faint memories of Skye flash through my mind, and the haunting fiddle in this is just a beautiful touch...
edit: if you are listening to this on a phone, plug you're headphones into a computer instead and put the volume up. Trust me the sound is far more pure!
