Your son must've been a sensitive soul. Perhaps too good for this world. I lost a son too and that's what I like to think and believe. He dwells someplace else; someplace better and you will see him again. Bless...
When my father first heard this song, I watched as his eyes grew wide and he just sat there silently crying until he was shaking trying to hold it in. I now have the same reaction every time I listen to it. Rest in peace.
I first heard this song when I went to watch Riverdance in Dublin and it brought me to tears. Even after all these years it still does. I find it so beautiful and it touches my soul in such a way that I cannot even put it into words. ☘️
This beautiful lament, played wonderfully on the Ullean pipes, cries out deeply to those with a spot of Scottish or Irish blood in their veins. It touches the collective core or who we are. But aside from that, it is a beautiful lament to all who chance to hear it, in this case, a lament to a son. We can only lament the past. We can’t lament the future. It is proper from time to time, in this human condition, to lament our past. Whether it be of loved ones gone on, loves lost, special times of our lives, events or special places…..we all lament, and it is good. But as the strains of this touching song fade at the end, it is a perfect reminder that, like this song, there is a time for the lament to end, and to once again turn from the past…carrying with us the beauty and memories, but focusing on that which we can’t lament. The future is unwritten, so we must boldly and bravely journey forward with hope and aspirations, and a touch of the knowledge that our lives, actions and deeds may be part of someone else’s lament in years to come. Make it a lament that will make those who remember also smile through their tears.
My grandfather requested this be played when they spread his ashes into the body of water of which he wanted to be spread in. He died before he got a chance to make it to my wedding so my family played it randomly without my knowledge at my ceremony and i completely lost it. Half the people that were there that werent even of celtic descent started crying as well. The most beautiful and powerful song ive ever heard :-)
Now, my dear brother, the chief architect of who I am today, has passed away. January 11, 1940 - September 20, 2024. Guy made this video for me, as a thank you for turning him on to the Davey Spillane piece he used for this video. Guy was truly an incredible man. A poet, philosopher, astronomer, photographer, pilot, aircraft mechanic, aviation school chief instructor, guitarist, songwriter, and performer. He was a dad, husband, brother, son, grandfather, and uncle. He will be with me, always.
My condolences. Even though voids like these will never be filled again, may you carry the great memories you have of him with you forever. It hurts like nothing else to lose a good brother or sister..
I was about to write a thank you comment to the person who posted this video, but then I saw this comment. I am so sorry for your loss. I would like then to thank you both. This is a piece that I heard repeatedly in my childhood but was nameless to me. I spent some years looking for it with no success, so I sadly thought I would never hear it again. All I had were some fragments that I replayed by memory in my head from time to time. Somehow, after 20 years, life led me back to this song through this video. Thank you for turning this song to your brother, as it allowed me to find it and joy from it again. Thank you.
I love this song/tune. Music was not part of my life until after I turned 69 years old. Then I taught myself to play the GHB, the SSP, the Native American flute and the Irish tin whistle, in that order. I am now 72 and I am playing the first 3 minutes of this tune on my tin whistle in key D. I will soon have the entire piece memorized. I will be so proud to have accomplished this personal challenge. Thank you, Davy Spillane for creating this masterpiece.
Hi bro. Well done. I am a pro musician and I am struggling with this one. David Spillain is a uilliann pipe god. Keep up the great work because people who don't play will never feel the great satisfaction of completing a piece of music. It makes us understand the hard work that people like David put in.
I am half Irish/Scott and half German (Black Forest). It's interesting how some music with no lyrics stirs the soul. It's like your brain paints a picture of your ancient memories while you just listen. Thank you!!!🥰
I am Irish, Scots, Welsh and Black Forest German as well. I can feel the rivers run through my soul with the music of my (our) peoples pouring in my broken heart. Cheers, mate.
This is definitely one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have heard, I remember hearing it for the first time years ago at a Riverdance performance.
I'm the farthest you could get from being Irish..and the music has the exact same effect. Your people create the most beautiful things. Ireland is a magical place, there's no denying it. It's my dream to go there.
I was in Ireland two months ago and I first heard this beautiful piece being played by a talented man at the Glendalough monastery. At that moment, I fell in love with Ireland and never wanted to leave. Just listening to this takes me back. Ever since that moment, hearing this song makes me proud to have a quarter of Irish blood in my veins. Hope I can make a second journey very soon. Much love from New York City!
my soul is singing in tears when I hear this. I know little of irish music or the instruments being played or the history of this character. I know only that this music speaks universally to those whose hearts are open to hear
I know I’ve commented it before, but every few years I have to return to say , this is the song I want played at my funeral. It’s just so hauntingly beautiful.
Im not Irish, im Hispanic but my love for the Irish culture and music goes beyond any borders. The people, the lifestyle, everything about it is beautiful and mystifying. The music always gets me. This song nearly brings a tear to my eye and it has no lyrics, much like other classical pieces in history. Much love from the U.S....
I'm an electronic music fan mainly, but the Irish Uilleann Pipes are truly beautiful. These Uilleann masters literally have to work the sound out of them every second of a performance to create such emotion. When combined with orchestration as here the result transcends music. Truly magical.
I am three generations removed from the fair, distant green hills of Ireland..and yet, from the first trill of these pipes and this song, my very skin tingles , my heart beats quicker and tears push ever so close to my eyes. Irish blood, indeed, runs deep and true.
this music inspires me to spread wings and fly into a better happier life than what ive been through in the past i cannot express how much my life is turning around for the better it makes me want to shed happy tears especially the day i leave out of Virginia state and move to north Carolina and i hope this song inspires my family and people i leave behind that they too become successful enough to spread their wings and fly to wherever it is that will make them happier in life
This music reminds me of my wife.. who was taken from me too soon.. I will never love another.. I will live my remaining days here until I can be returned to her arms.
My mother and I went to see Riverdance about 4 to 5 years ago, and when this song played, I burst into tears. One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Ever.
I weep a flood of tears every time I hear it . I feel the spirit of my grandmother , Mary O'Molloy Davis , who was forced to leave her home in County West Meath with her brothers and sisters , hovering over me and protecting me . God bless my Irish roots .
This is so beautiful yet I wonder why there is so much hate in this world? We have the ability to create such great music like this but have it in us to self destruct. Walk in peace and then stand for a while and listen to this beautiful music.
This makes me proud to be Irish, I really want to learn the uilleann pipes they are with out a doubt the most beautiful sounding instrument I have ever heard
Seamus Ennis' tutor is the best, and if your handy with hand tools and a lathe, have accurate rifle bores. can weld, braize and bend metals; and if you can find a copy which I am lucky enough to proudly own, Wilbert Garvin wrote "the" book on how to make a set from scratch. Good luck. They must be the most haunting instrument the ingenuity of man has ever devised. I'd give a dangle berry for a full set with regulators.I've made some superb fiddles, but those pipes are a tough order to knock up.
I may be deceived once again, yet still I go to that stone on the point by the lake waiting to hear the whisper of footsteps. "Nay, laddie, it's not love that deceives but the wicked empty heart that loses it's truth and shatters its icy shell again and again and again, to awaken no more in the place we had come to know." It's the voice repeating, "It is gone, it is gone", that deceives.
A lament. This piece performed with so much expression by Spillane instantly evoked an image in my mind- of an old woman losing her last Son in war, alone and wailing in her empty home as she struggles to function with life's most basic, now grueling, chores. I see faded lyrics above as I write this long overdue message, suggesting my image may be "wrong," but I learned from this what a lament is to me- having never known the form before- and realizing it speaks (or should) to the core of us all, as we ride the sometimes painful waves of life. Just incredible.
I From Brazil.. I Love the Celtic Music, during all my life, I've been listening to so beautiful and sweet celtic music, enchants me so much purity and love that 's music...The biggest dream of my life is to know Ireland :D
Feidhelm Ó Foghladha Thank you so much! Ireland to me, is the best place where someone can live, is a beautiful place, the mountains, the fields, the people, the music, the Celtic culture and the cold. I am totally in love and delighted with Ireland, my dream is one day can live there, and know so adorable Lady Mary Bergin. I would give everything I have just to can feel the breeze and hear so sweet Celtic music :) I hope that God will continue to bless the lives of all Irish! The Ireland may be small, more is a magical country which is not more in the world today. Gently: Roberto
Roberto Whistler thanks very much for your kind words... You will have plenty of wind, rain and cold. And plenty of Irish trad music as well. Lots of Fleadh Cheoil, which is music on the streets and in the pubs. You can join in yourself and play. You will love it. You must go and watch the beautiful game of hurling its part of our Gaelic culture and is over 3000 years old...Its our national sport. Lots of videos of hurling on youtube, you might like it...anyway my friend nice meeting you and I wish you and yours a happy and peaceful life....
I'm from Belgium and I find this a really great sound. I love the Irisch music. 7 years ago mij brother (48 years) died en evertime when I heard that song I had to cry. When I die they may play this song to on my funerall.
Something about those pipes that touches something very deep down in the soul ... if there is such a thing. I'm a cynic, but hearing this makes me wonder .... !!!
+Matt Hall The song is the lament of the hero cu Chulainn. The story comes from a series of myths and legends called the Ulster Cycle. In the final section of the story there is a battle where Chulainn fights and kills a young warrior. Chulainn later discovers the warrior is his son, and this song is his lament. (Having sons of my own , the sound of it tends to hit home, and it probably touches something of my own Celtic blood as well.) There are all sorts of nefarious goings on that lead to this terrible accident taking place. The cycle is a great read. There is a nicely written children's version by Rosemary Sutcliff, which I still read despite being in my fifties now. I hope this helps
+Hamish Hudson Oh dear - I did some delving and the stories is much sadder than I remember. No battle. If you wish to find out why Cu Chulainn cries out, follow this link: bardmythologies.com/the-son-of-cuchulainn/ His sons name was Connla
Hamish Hudson Thanks for looking this up dude, appreciate it. I've always found this song to be incredibly powerful song emotionally, but this story adds a whole other layer to it. Can't listen to it in quite the same way.
@guy Mackenzie The music is obviously powerful, but when set with the scenery it is even more moving. Add to that the bit of prose and it grabs my heart. The line " Oh laddie,Are you going just now? Can’t you stay awhile longer?Sit and we will share the last golden dropOf the wee dram that is you and me.This chokes me up. My father passed when I was two, so never knew him. I do my best to spend time with my kids as often as possible.
I am from Germany and I really really love Celtic Music. This is such a wonderful piece of Music and I hear it again and again. I wish I could travel to Ireland sometimes...
I can't describe why I love this piece so much. It gives me goosebumps every single time. Maybe it's about the 'howling' sound of the Uilleann Pipes, which are stunningly gorgeous.
A hard day will find now the end. After a bad car accident, and god bless, nobody get hurt, had to catch the train home. Now i m sitting there and hear that wonderful sound on my way home. I miss my soul land and i hope it will going to happened that i see the land of Bonnie Scotland.
Thank you so much for sharing! Davy Spillane is amazing. He plays with so much heart and soul that it makes me cry every time I hear this song. Thanks for adding the pictures of Ireland and Scotland. Just beautiful :)
Music that can ease a troubled mind, heal a broken heart and soothe a tormented soul. I often think of home (Ireland) when I listen to music like this particularly of this quality.
When those of us have experienced our hearts torn in half we try to find something good out of it rather than it all being sad. The good in this is being able to share such a sweet sound for others to enjoy and touch their hearts.
found it again.... this music goes directly to my very soul cant fully explain, but it absolutely overwhelms me each time i hear it...tears and emotion, sadness yet hope... wore out the riverdance tape someone borrowed me once i got to this...wept mate, like i'd lost someone...welling up now, wtf!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. It is one thing for someone to be able to play an instrument; it is entirely a different level for the instrument to be an extension of the musician. That's what this sounded like.
I love this piece of music. A shame that Davy Spillane's name is misspelled in the credits, and that no credit is given to Bill Whelan, the composer (indeed, the end caption "Music - Davey [sic] Spillane" suggests that he wrote it). Credit (properly spelled) where it's due please.
There must be somethjng to DNA memory. So many from other countries feel kinship when listening to Celtic music. My family came from Iverness to America in the early 1700's. I have felt connected to anything Scottish since I was young.
Haunting spiritual music from the Celtic ancestral soul that speaks across time directly to our soul and spirit. Our soul cry tears and our spirit spreads wings to soar to new divine heights of enlightenment and understanding all at the same time. The language of the soul which breaches the great mystery to speak the unspeakable and understand the incomprehensible that which words can not express. From the Celts this is truly a great gift of spiritual story telling to us all. Blissful.
.....musica meravigliosa..... piango ogni volta che l'ascolto.....tanto mi emoziona....!!!! penetra nell'anima e nel cuore...... complimenti a chi l'ha scritta...... w la vita.....!!!!
Oh my God theres something so intricately beautiful about this soul-touching piece. I was born in England but this kind of music is a part of me somehow, I feel so connected to it. One day I will travel around Ireland and also Scotland. Its hard to explain, but a missing part of me is always found when I listen to this kind of music. I dont understand why, but I have to follow it to its source.
Miguel Gonzalez Music has no nationality,Beautiful music even more so,but if you feel an inexplicable connection perhaps you are a descendant of the san patricios.
Stunningly melancholic music about Cú Chulainn who was a famous warrior from Irish mythology who is sad because he has killed his son in battle. The piece was written by Bill Whelan and masterfully played here by Davy Spillane. One thing i find strange is your use of the truly beautiful Scottish castle Eilean Donan instead of one of 30,000 irish castles (fair enough a lot of them are in ruins plus the Cú Chulainn story has strong links to Scotland) 😃😃 Nevertheless thank you for sharing this music and the images of Eilean Donan Castle which is a truly amazing place
There's even a place in Dundalk that is sometimes referred to as "Cú Chulainn's castle" though, admittedly, it's not as scenic as this Scottish one. Geographically, Dundalk makes more sense.
Yes, Dundalk in County Louth makes more sense . County Louth in Irish, is called Condae an Lú, or, An Lú. This reflects the folklore, surrounding Cú Chulainn.
This is so beautiful. It touches your heart and gives you the feeling of wanderlust, at least for me. Visiting foreign countries you‘ve never seen before. 🇮🇪🏴
Im hearing this as i type this and its..its.....sooooo beautifully deep and awe inspiring that i cant help but to have tears and there not tears of sadnees i dont think just tears of beauty if any1 but me gets that
No You're not the only one. I'm Irish myself and like a lot of people stressed out in this modern life >its a beautiful thing , an act of grace really when we make time and time makes for us moments like these when we know on a deep almost subconscious level what it means to be in touch with what's at the core of being human. You should take a trip to the beara peninsula. I can only imagine you would feel on a symbiotic level how this piece and other haunting pieces ( check out Maria Grigoryeva for eg.... and she's Russian !) came into being. Regards, Liam
my dear son loved this piece and i listen to it often in honor of him. he passed away in 2009. love him forever. his mom.

This tune and the uillean pipes have nothing to do with Scotland.
This is Irish music.

Just lost my Great uncle Paul Sullivan on Jan 31 sending my love to him on the pipes of ERIN!
This one never gets old open, listening to it for 30 years
a man that makes men of men and a true understanding of the women of eire.
By God, this is such a sad, sad story. I remember turning the last page and tears streaming down my face. This music brings it all back.
What story?
Hamish Hudson
Thanks for looking this up dude, appreciate it. I've always found this song to be incredibly powerful song emotionally, but this story adds a whole other layer to it. Can't listen to it in quite the same way.
I'm listening to this over and over again...
In love with this video already.
Thanks Sinead O'Connor for showing it to those who did not know it however it is a Music for my World.
@guy Mackenzie The music is obviously powerful, but when set with the scenery it is even more moving. Add to that the bit of prose and it grabs my heart. The line "
Oh laddie,Are you going just now? Can’t you stay awhile longer?Sit and we will share the last golden dropOf the wee dram that is you and me.This chokes me up. My father passed when I was two, so never knew him. I do my best to spend time with my kids as often as possible.
played at my dads funeral just a few days ago a fitting song for a true celt who i will miss forever god bless
every time i hear this piece of music tears spring to my eyes, it is so hauntingly beautiful
I am from Germany and I really really love Celtic Music. This is such a wonderful piece of Music and I hear it again and again. I wish I could travel to Ireland sometimes...
I first heard this beautiful song when it was played by Davy Spillane during his appearance in Riverdance, it lives on ...
the most wonderful music!
I am watching this in 2.15 in the morning while drinking greenmore single malt 8 years old and smoking... thank you Ireland.... Greetings from Greece
I can't describe why I love this piece so much. It gives me goosebumps every single time. Maybe it's about the 'howling' sound of the Uilleann Pipes, which are stunningly gorgeous.
2:50 kills me every time with chills
A hard day will find now the end. After a bad car accident, and god bless, nobody get hurt, had to catch the train home. Now i m sitting there and hear that wonderful sound on my way home. I miss my soul land and i hope it will going to happened that i see the land of Bonnie Scotland.
Tears shed. music goes right to my Irish bones
I'm not even Irish, but it has the same effect on me. Just lived in Cork for a few years. Maybe it is the closeness to the vikings that surface...
Thank you so much for sharing! Davy Spillane is amazing. He plays with so much heart and soul that it makes me cry every time I hear this song. Thanks for adding the pictures of Ireland and Scotland. Just beautiful :)
Riverdance last night was SUPERB I found Tara Howley's rendition of Caoineadh Cú Chulainn played on uilleann pipes especially moving.
Music that can ease a troubled mind, heal a broken heart and soothe a tormented soul. I often think of home (Ireland) when I listen to music like this particularly of this quality.
Davy Spillane, music and his Ulieann Pipes are beautiful!
When those of us have experienced our hearts torn in half we try to find something good out of it rather than it all being sad. The good in this is being able to share such a sweet sound for others to enjoy and touch their hearts.
Eire is like clear water in my heart and in in my mind. i had an aussie Teacher McNamara. How does it came we all lost all our roots?
It drives me crazy that I can't find Davy playing this on iTunes! This song is the sound of my soul.
Κλείστε τα μάτια, δυνατά, ανοιχτό τα παράθυρα και παραδοθείτε στην
μαγεία αυτού του κομματιού. Καλό Σαββατοκύριακο!
found it again....
this music goes directly to my very soul
cant fully explain, but it absolutely overwhelms me each time i hear it...tears and emotion, sadness yet hope...
wore out the riverdance tape someone borrowed me once i got to this...wept mate, like i'd lost someone...welling up now, wtf!
Uilleann pipes seem to connect directly to your soul, I cry every time I hear this.
Merveilleux... Marvellous...Great ...I'm a breton... so... trugarez !!!! (thank you !)
I first heard this song on some movie or TV show years ago I really wish I could remember what it was!
Spillane stirs things in me.
I lived in Ireland in the 90’s ( County Cork ).
His playing just sets things in motion inside.
A hauntingly beautiful piece indeed, played with the soul. So sorry "Susan L" to hear of your tragic loss. R.I.P.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
It is one thing for someone to be able to play an instrument; it is entirely a different level for the instrument to be an extension of the musician. That's what this sounded like.
Couldn't agree more, Chris. Although, the uilleann pipe is a hauntingly beautiful instrument, which, in my opinion, is unequalled.
why i get Goose Bumps. ooh wait is it because this kind of tune touches my soul !
This is a beautiful representation of Ireland in a musical masterpiece.
Old legends may fade but they never die
Haunting spiritual music from the Celtic ancestral soul that speaks across time directly to our soul and spirit. Our soul cry tears and our spirit spreads wings to soar to new divine heights of enlightenment and understanding all at the same time.
The language of the soul which breaches the great mystery to speak the unspeakable and understand the incomprehensible that which words can not express.
From the Celts this is truly a great gift of spiritual story telling to us all. Blissful.
"Riverdance on Broadway" is the album and you can buy this song on Amazon for .99 pounds.
.....musica meravigliosa.....
piango ogni volta che l'ascolto.....tanto mi emoziona....!!!!
penetra nell'anima e nel cuore......
complimenti a chi l'ha scritta......
w la vita.....!!!!
Davy Spillane plays from the Soul.Beautifully played Just Beautiful...
Gorgeous. Thanks for posting.
You will always be a son of Eire and you will always be welcome in our lands. You have pride in your heritage and that I can respect a chara.
This is being played when my time comes!❤
I'm from Mexico but for some reason my heart love this kind of beautiful music
I love much more this music then Mexican music
Miguel Gonzalez Music has no nationality,Beautiful music even more so,but if you feel an inexplicable connection perhaps you are a descendant of the san patricios.
icelandmoon Right you are, Miguel. That is why the pictures are not limited to any one country.
Miguel Gonzalez You must stay in Mexico, USA doesn't want you.
***** Actually, we don't want people like you.
***** Don't worry, one day I will go to Mexico.... But not wen you want, sorry to disappoint you.
Stunningly melancholic music about Cú Chulainn who was a famous warrior from Irish mythology who is sad because he has killed his son in battle. The piece was written by Bill Whelan and masterfully played here by Davy Spillane. One thing i find strange is your use of the truly beautiful Scottish castle Eilean Donan instead of one of 30,000 irish castles (fair enough a lot of them are in ruins plus the Cú Chulainn story has strong links to
Scotland) 😃😃
Nevertheless thank you for sharing this music and the images of Eilean Donan Castle which is a truly amazing place
This reflects the folklore, surrounding Cú Chulainn.
beautiful irish music davy spillane is a absolutely amazing musician. I am from Scottish descendents but I love his music. 100%.
Davy makes the pipes speak. Absolutely amazing! Would only love to be gifted like this musician.
This is so beautiful. It touches your heart and gives you the feeling of wanderlust, at least for me. Visiting foreign countries you‘ve never seen before. 🇮🇪🏴
This song is always so beautiful ,,, it gives me goose bumps all over.
14 years. 14 years ago, this beautiful video was put here.
This is so gorgeous. I can't stop listening to it.
This piece calms my soul
How nice is that irish music blows my mind 🇮🇪☘️
Im hearing this as i type this and its..its.....sooooo beautifully deep and awe inspiring that i cant help but to have tears and there not tears of sadnees i dont think just tears of beauty if any1 but me gets that
I can feel you - from Hannover, Germany!
