Sounds like you are very money/value driven. Not all collectors are that way. I love automotive design and need to look at the castings in a 360 view so, yes, i'm a loose collector. My premium cars are displayed in 108 car Carney cases and the regular mainlines are in Creative Options 48 car cases. Also created a database on the cars and approx. value for my Son/Grandson in case I blow a gasket. You will find, as you become a seasoned collector that all the cardboard and plastic gets in the way. I'd rather my diecast look like a collection or automotive archive than a toy store isle.

The #1 fail is putting a value on it, as soon as you look at it as an investment, you'll always be behind and scared of buying what you like and not whats profitable.

    • @ABDULLAH86SA

Nobody cares about buying what you like...that doesnt build a collection. That makes you wallet warrior buying cars for solely no reason. How many girls did you like? How you feel about them now ? Obviously you dont care about them. So why factor in buying what you "like". Is "liking" something even a good reason when you're just wasting money?🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️👎👎👎

They are toys! Between my brother and myself. We have every hot wheels since 1994. Approximately 14000 cars. Including every Nascar.
The entire collection can't get $1 for each car. As a collector...the cars are only as worth what someone else will give you. Price guides and internet is not a accurate source. It's a fad that comes and goes. Just like baseball cards. They are not worth anywhere near what the hype makes them.
I get them for my kids. They race them and stage them like a realistic town. They will remember their favorites and have fun with them. More entertainment then a Hollywood movie or expensive game. When you out grow them....set them aside for the next generation. Or give them away to a kid. The joy they get upon receiving it is much more valuable. Adults scrounging through box's before being put on the shelves or stuffing them in other locations of a store for later on are complete loosers. Not collectors.

    • @MM12684
      @MM12684 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have to disagree...if you can’t get $1 a car I’d say you bought the wrong cars for your collection. If you have every hot wheel since 94’ the ferraris alone are worth $$$$

This is the reason why I stick to mainline short card releases here in the UK, I just collect the weird and wacky cars. What seriously put me off were the Mario Kart cars, they wanted £7.99 for a kart with a character, but in the mainline, you can get the standard kart with no character for £1.50, I got just over 200 cars on the wall from collecting within this year since starting and it's not broke the bank. For me, it's mainlines or nothing, I can't stand artificial scarcity.

You learn as you go, if you started in 2018 then you are still new to the hobby, not meant to be offensive. I open what I want because I'm not looking at selling/trading. I collect certain castings I like and keep to those. I have opened cards that a lot of people wouldn't because monetarily that's how collectors think. I don't. I have carded redlines and those are where they stay, carded. Super Treasure hunts, RLC and other niche series, they get opened for the castings I collect. I'm happy and being happy in this hobby is the important thing to me and keeps me collecting.

Bad trade isn't really a bad trade. NOBODY can predict the future. You can speculate but that's personal opinion. You only trade CURRENT value. A $20 for $20. You can't say in the trade that your car will be worth more after 5 years than his car that you have to compensated. That's just ridiculous.

Loose STH are somewhat rarer than sealed.
The problem with opening them is that you remove the option from 50% of the market.

I think this advice can apply to any kind of collector- cars, cards, comics, etc. I started collecting Hot Wheels right around 1989/1990 (back when Toys R Us was around). After a while I lost interest and went back to my comic book collection.

Got scammed on IG twice a couple years ago, one for a few bucks but the other for over 100. So I dont do deals by mail anymore. Plenty of local collectors to deal with here in Phoenix. I Highly recommend staying local or seeing who does business with who. Stick to the country your in for Mail/PayPal transactions. Got burn on what seemed like a reputable asian seller and that really turned me off to the scene for a while.
I think you made a great point tho as well about your early collecting, and I think it should still be true unless your focusing on trading down the line. "Collect what you like, and dont worry about the prices" but also, "Don't get taken advantage of either". Watch those prices, dig into the trends on social media. Figure out what is the desirable castings are/will be and make smart choices for yourself and your collections.

I bought a lot of mainlines that I thought were cool. I realized that I should have left them so I started to transition to only specific cars. I need to get rid of them. If I can find somebody who collects M2 Machines I’d trade and wouldn’t care about value as much. It’s too easy to justify spending $5 here $10 there and end up with 100 cars every couple weeks. That’s how they get you. $1 a car. Then I bought the whole set of ultra hot Target exclusives when I only wanted the regal. Somebody send help…

I collect Hot Wheels (among other brands) only for a couple of years, and I don't open the Premium models because I really like the artwork. For me, the HW car and associated artwork are one model and not separate, hence not opening them. I do open the mainlines though as the artwork is not something special.

When I moved from NY to NJ in late 1997 I had 2 briefcases of die casts (1 with THs plus other stuff I collected from 1994- 1997 and 1 had loose cars, I think the loose briefcase was either lost or I left it behind in NY) fast forward 2011 I came back from a friend's wake I was so distraught over the loss that I completely spaced about asking his son who I knew what happened to the stuff I had in the attic. Fast forward again 1 decade later, I get in touch and the son said everything from the attic was cleared out when we sold the house, I'm sorry..........to this day I'm STILL kicking myself about what I COULD have had.

I have 7 cars left from back then, and none are the super treasure hunts. I did manage to keep one of the two '49 Merc TH's and one of the three '37 Ford TH's I found at a local Wal Mart back then, but I suppose this month was as good as any to start collecting again.

Or cheap at comic con.. But recently I looked up a sold listings. And back September 26th. On ebay. In it's original package. Like I still got... Sold for $10,000. Blew my mind.! Something I took a chance on cuz I was maken decent money and having a small crisis in my life. And bought a Lego for a lot of money. And thought about selling or trading many times when I was short on money. But once I saw that. Glad I never did. I got a gold piece in my collection

Me up in a Hot Wheels fans for as long as I can remember my mom always used to buy them for me as well as other family members to me Hot Wheels this bring back all nostalgic memories of the past but honestly I'd never heard of treasure hunts until I was in my later twenties but I guess one of my fails I guess is a Hot Wheel collector was it always seem like Hot Wheels had the best cars in their five packs later would be called the 10 packs as well and I always wanted to buy them in a normal setting so I got burnt out on them and not to mention treasure hunts being so hard to find it may not really have in too many of them because of financial circumstances but when I started collecting them again after I stopped working for Walmart I've always left them in their packages which was an old failed of mine because I just couldn't resist taking them out of the package not knowing that it would hurt the value but now I extremely buy Hot Wheels because I enjoy the art of it and how much time and patience it takes to create Hot Wheels to me it's like buying a model car and having a display case with it but I used to draw pictures a lot of times and used a tremendous start of Hot Wheels to surround the picture frame but enjoyed the video in great job on telling people that they're scammers out there who take advantage of collectors.

Number one to the video. On quitting.. well I'm almost about to quit. I've been a hardcore collector for almost 5yrs now. Buuut. only recently that I've gotten into hotwheels. I collected autoworld. Johnny lightning. Green light. M2. But I never did hot wheels cuz to me it was over wellming to go thru so many cars. Until I found ways to dumb it down to make it easier to find treasure hunts and supers.. so like 3 months ago. I took a chance. Felt I had knowledge enough. And while out huntn for my normal diecast. I seen there was full pegs. Grabbed one to see what case. (Cheated with a quick look on my phone to see what was what) and after I seen what the super was and the TH was. And thought omg. The card I flipped to see what case was out. Was actually the super. The whole odds of that happing. Was crazy. But was stoked. That I found a super and a TH on my 1st chance of actually looking. So I got sucked in. But I still think I'm going to sell a good chunk of my collection come spring. Waaaay to many collectors now days. With only a few stores. I still score. Jus got a M2 chase yesterday. But it's gettn harder to collect. But I got a good person collection I'm happy with. And sell a lot of the rest
