Kris is a Rhodes Scholar/former Army Officer (Helicopter Pilot). Had the opportunity to teach at West Point, but chose to peddle songs in Nashville. He studied literature at Oxford when he was a Rhodes Scholar. There is a reason he has vibes, he can write damn well.
Kris makes ya think!!!! We, several struggling songwriters/singers, use to put on the latest Kris album, this was back in the 70's in Nashville - listen to the whole album & spend the rest of the evening critique Kris's new works! His works made us ALL better writers!! You can tell he has a Master's in Literature, from Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar, he sets VIBES & he makes ONE think!!!!! His ""Burden of Freedom"" is my life mantra since the 70's!!! I would send you a bottle BUT as a recovering alcoholic since 1998 - i simply can't do that!!! Billy Dee was written in the 70's way before Robin but way too many folks OD'd back then as they do nowadays!!!
His albums were eye openers back in the days. I'm a bit older than you and was following Kris's heroes. I thank you & them too. Williams, Cash, Willie, Waylon and so on.
Kris is one of those artists where you sometimes have to sit in the uncomfortableness of whatever vibe he's created to understand how great he is. Loved y'all's commentary on it!
Yeah, I can ramble on about music and such I just don't have the talent needed to make it. I can visit the museums and appreciate the art; I just can't paint the pictures.
He said in the opening before singing this on stage it’s about a guy he never met but he knew him thru a couple of ladies that loved him but he’s like a lot of guys he does know
Hi guys, this is the aimless one and you did better than most folks do digging the pronunciation out. Take the A, off and spell melaS backwards the one = 1. Tells you where I grew up! It's been an ordeal getting that bribe to you. Keith was right about the price of the bottle. I paid $65.00 plus tax for it here in Millinocket, Maine at a grocery store. This was in early October I believe. I'm seeing Mount Katahdin out my window, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Wilderness has no amenities! The Blantons name meant nothing to me, it was the best Ellis's Market had in stock their top shelf bourbon. I've seen a large number of your reviews and enjoy you folks and love the concept of it. I saw a review after I bought this bottle I'm looking at on my desk. I see you tasting Blantons with another good song. I also found out I couldn't send it by USPS or UPS, so I call Amazon to send you that one and they got me that jug thru the large chain near your address. $179 or so with shipping and you have it. I also sent you another bottle I haven't seen on your reviews, and you should have that one there too. Pick another Kristofferson tune or a Hank Williams song, Kris studied Hank's style of writing and lived the songs he wrote. He paints a picture with few words in his tale and that's the thing Johnny Cash was sometimes missing! Thanks again. The Amelas One
We have the other bottle, and have already recorded the reaction. It's in the queue to drop. Thanks so much. You'll be hearing a lot more commentary on Kristofferson from us with that second bottle. - Keith
That singer may have been Hank Williams Keith. Hank was the first Country Super Star. Dead at 29 with Hundreds of songs recorded. He's in four Hall of Fames including The Rock Hall and has a Star on the Hollywood Boulevard. Look at "Move it on Over" and several others. That was Hanks first #1 in 1947. Elvis was still in grade school. I knew his music before I could read, and he was still alive. I'll tell you the story later if you have an interest. Thank for a great TH-cam site. Entertaining!@@BourbonCountryReacts
Cash and Jennings who were “Co Highwaymen” both suffered addiction issues, and Kristoferson is an amazing songwriter who has written many many amazing songs thru his career
I agree it has to be about someone, and at first I thought the obvious, about Billy Dee Williams ,the actor, but as far as I know, he is still alive and never had a drug addiction problem. Now it's gonna drive me crazy (not a long drive) til I figure it out.
Loved your reaction and I liked the song. My dad is a huge Kris fan and saw him live a couple of times. But I’ve never heard this song before. So sad, so hopeless. Addictions like pictures in this song are hell on earth. I’m so glad you guys are back. I missed you.
Kat, as of right now, we haven't received that shipment yet. But I also haven't been to our office in over a week, so, it may be there waiting on us. I'll try to check today, and I'll let you know. - Keith
@@BourbonCountryReacts hmm, it should have been there since the end of October. I hope it’s not lost! Thank you for checking again. And sorry for all the trouble. It’s just not so easy to ship something internationally. I’m always hoping that the stuff gets over the pond in one piece. And I don’t want to ruin the surprise but there should be two beer steins for the two of you and some candy. Please share that with your wimminz. And the whiskey should be in there as well.
Kris and his wife (at the time) Rita Coolidge- Don’t tell me how the story ends. I believe he wrote it when they were getting divorced. Ronnie Milsap does a good version of the song too.
Use and abuse was not uncommon. Kris makes reference to his friend and mentor Johnny Cash's substance battle. Johnny and Waylon were once roommates, Waylon and Willie were, well, Waylon & Willie. Kris was supposed to go see his friend Janis Joplin the night she died. He expressed regret for not making it there. In short, Billy Dee could be someone in that circle, or just a composite character created by a lyrical genius.
I think it's about a composite of all the entertainers who OD, on purpose or otherwise. Probably focused on Joplin, Morrison, Hendrix, etc. Maybe an attempt at a cautionary tale. Kinda like Shooting Star by Bad Company.
Wow. I haven't heard Shooting Star in maybe two decades. That was one of the three albums I had on tape in my shitbox car way back in the day. It was that one, The Cars, and Metallica's Ride the Lightning. To me, "Shooting Star" was kind of background filler. The song Bad Company was why people bought that album. And I'm going to go spin that song right now. - Keith
Kristofferson wrote sunday morning coming down even though johny cash recorded it first should listen to border lord and Jodi and the kid kristofferson was also a rhodes scholar
No offense to people who love country music from today but theres just something about country music back then you cant get from Jason, Luke, or Florida Georgia Line
hey Stephen, since your from here in Texas....I just heard a song from Cody Johnson (also from Texas) you should check out it's called "that's Texas " I think you would love it
Love Kris. Missed you guys. I turned 80 last Wedneesday. I sent you 4 bottles 7 or 8 months ago. I guess theyre in your garage or somewhere. Just realize that octogenarian don't have so much time left. Not asking for special treatment, just hoping.
@@BourbonCountryReacts I don't remember the bourbon because I don't drink. I think one was Old Forester bonded. I remember the songs. One was Eric Church, A Man who was Gonna Die Young. I wanted to dedicate it to Keith & Joanna.
@@barbarahighlander8840 we do have a couple of orphaned bottles that came with no note, and no info on who sent them to us. But neither is an Old Forrester. I will check with our shipping folks this week and see if they've got something that's been sitting around for months. - Keith

Lovely reaction to a melancholy reminder of so many entertainers that we have lost to drugs, alcohol and loneliness.

This song was released in 1971. His good friend Janis Joplin od'd in Oct 1970. A good possibility.

For a vibe, Tom T Hall ranks right up there with Kris and Johnny.
When this album came out, it wasn’t really considered country, just good music.
Oh, I forgot, Kris wrote Sunday Morning Coming Down. He landed a helicopter on Cash's lawn and pitched him the song...

I'm back in Virginia where we have only state ABC stores. I'll try to send some new ones.
