I'd say the main two ways are customer service and convenience. When a supermarket sells cornflakes, it doesn't change the physical nature of the product when it sells them - they appear on the shelves just like they were when they left the Kellogg's factory. However, visiting the Kellogg's factory would not be very practical for a consumer just to get a box of cornflakes. Supermarkets sell the gift of convenience - you get to walk through their doors and buy cereal at the same time as conveniently buying all of your other groceries. To make the experience even more convenient - thus adding greater value - many supermarkets now deliver groceries direct to your door. Supermarkets such as Waitrose may also add value through the superior customer service and experience they offer. Hope this helps. Good luck with your revision!
