My perfect fjallraven backpack would be 50-70l capacity - take kajka, remove dry/wet section, put loops on the back like the one singi has, remove some pockets, use bergshell material from keb. Ideally this backpack would be as sturdy as current kajka but sub 2kg.

Ahh I can truly relate to this: seeing the strenghts of different variants of a particular type of product and then wishing you could combine those into one new "perfect" or "ideal" version.
In the end I opted not for a Fjallraven backpack, but one from your Finish neighbours (Savotta). They are probably too heavy if I read the comments here, but bombproof, waterproof and very modular.

I have a Kajka 85 as well, which I love, but one thing that bothers me a bit is that I often find myself turning it over back and forth between accessing the side pockets and the main compartment. An idea could be to have the side pockets open from the front as well or maybe both. To your point on the front Keb pocket, I would love to see something like that on the big front lid of the Kajka.

I have a Kajka 55L, and completely agree on ability to access contents easily by completely opening front panel is a feature I would look for in any backpack of this size, for the rest of my life. I use my Kajka also on business trips and hotel stays - the open front panel makes this backpack extremely easy to live out of on any trip, camping, wilderness, business, or otherwise.

3:41 Back in 1995 I 'invented' this feature - when I put karabiners on the shoulderstraps of my Berghaus 65BC backpack and connected a small LowePro camerabag to them (with M6+28,35,50,90mm's inside)!!
I was just able to see over the camrabag to see where I was going - an impostant quality when in difficult terrain. This was my set up during my PennineWay solo backpacking walk.

I also have the kajka 85ltr and the singi 48.
if I could improve the singi I would have the lid from my 85 ltr pack on it and a zip open front.
it would be also good if they produced a wider range of extra pockets for it , ie a nalagene pouch that it easy to pop the bottle in and out of and maybe a bino harness that goes on the front

  • @medrup1025
    @medrup1025 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The perfect pack for me would be a 62l Keb with the loops from the Singi and the detachable lid to fit in front of the chest like with the kajka. You would have the great front pocket, the bergtagen material, the versatility with the detachable side pockets and a slim pack without the sidepockets. Perfect for winterovernighters or multiday hikes.

I like to see the waterproof and durable bottom of the Abisko 75 everywhere, a good mesh back for ventilation, at least one big zipper to reach everything inside from the side instead off have to open the top, waterproof and durable bergshell material for the complete pack (rain covers not really protect sensitve items when it comes to heavy rain and water is finding its way inside through the back), bigger side pockets to not have to be afraid of loosing the water bottles like in the High Coast, Abisko 75 or Abisko Hike Backpacks anymore and this beautiful clean design of the Keb 52. And I also really appreciate the simple solution to attach items at the top of the Abisko 75 as well the series philosophy. So give us more size choises for backpacks like the Keb 52 or Abisko 75, at least one that is air plane compatible for each of which.

I haven't got any of these, so this is purely based on youtube-vids and my experience from a couple of other backpacks.
My wishlist for the Kajka: I would like to see some mesh pockets on the inside of the front "lip" - where you have sown on patches. I have this feature on my 5.11 Rush 72 and I really like it. Also perhaps movable side pockets from the Singi. Might work well for tripods of different sizes. Loops from the Singi would allow you to customize the Kajka a bit more too. Maybe they could sell different accessories/pockets you could snap on like the Singi side pockets? :)

    1. The size ranges; having the same pack but in different sizes including a women's version of each is a great selling point.
    2. The waist belt, my Kajka waist belt is perfect.
    3. Weight: Weight of the pack is vital on any trip, I have found the Kajka a little weighty so would like to see them reduce the overall weight.
    4. The base: The base of the pack should be bomb proof, we put our packs down everywhere and therefore the base should be very hardwearing.

My Kaika 85L review and how I met you channel:
TLDR: + overall great, good top, very comfortable, fully opens, large side pockets, wooden frame
    - Smaller side pockets are a bit rubbish, as well as those on the hip belt (hip flaps)
Overall: I'm happy with it and would choose it again.
    Longer review:
+ It fits very well, feels much lighter. I do think that the hip belt gets uncomfortable after a few hours, my partner thinks the same, but we haven't had real problems. It is well built, opens wide, stands relatively well and has a wooden (renewable) frame, which legitimises the costs (and it isn't that expensive compared to other back packs in that range). All the zippers are large and very well made, you can probably operate them with gloves.
The top has a great size, it opens towards your head, so I was able to use it whilst walking. I love those small details, it can really make a difference! Never used it separately. The large side pockets are awesome, the fold up, so they are huge, I love those! The hip belt is good. Combine, the pockets, the top and it's rubber band offer a lot of space for jackets, trouser, maps and so on.
    - The smaller side pockets are a bit rubbish, they are a bit too small, my large water bottle (0.75 L, I think) just wasn't save there, I sometimes ended up putting it into the larger ones. The hip belt isn't as comfortable as it could be, but okay. However, its pockets are too small, I really think of them as a messed opportunity. Plus one of those and the small side pockets are made of mesh. I think that's a stupid decision, those are exactly the parts that will end up strafing branches and bushes, so I suppose that's where the tear will happen.
neutral: No extra pocket on the back for a rain jacket, but the top and side pockets were enough. Not the lightest model, but is so comfy, that it feels lighter.
Background: I needed a large backpack for a supposed honeymoon hiking tour through Norway (Pilegrimsleden/Olavsveien/Dovrefjell/possibly Lofoten). 2020 had other plans, so shorter trips in Switzerland it was, but still a honeymoon :) My girlfriend/wife wanted that backpack from the beginning (but a 65L for women), I tried the large one from Deuter, which was uncomfortable as hell. Then the large one from Osprey, the hip belt was horribly stiff and hence hard to get it on, plus the top is sometimes sold separately in Europe, which immediately led me to cross everything Osprey off my lists. So I did some more research and found this channel :) In the end, I tried on my girlfriends and liked it a lot, it was just comfy, even though it was made for ladies. So, it came to the decision that I could do without the extra pocket for jackets and got this one. Final result: I never missed the extra pocket and like it a lot! Biggest complaint remain the small sizes of the pockets and the hip belt, which can become a bit uncomfortable.

    • @TedWeirum
      @TedWeirum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

wow! awseome! I hope the honeymoon still was a great success even if it was in 2020 :p if you make it through this you can make it through everything! :) thanks for your comment brother! I'm happy for you and the wife!

I carried my sons on many hikes, even up mountains in front-baby carriers and always wanted to have something like that so I could carry a bigger backpack at the same time for overnight trips. Imagine a backpack where you can attach you dog leash without risking it to break the backpack and the dog will help you to get that extra push when hiking up that hill. Right now I use my canicross belt under my backpack but thats about 400g extra weight. Something I would love to loose.

It would be great to have the Bergtagen 38in a more natural color, like stonegrey for example. Partially the Bergtagen clothing range is available in grey so it would fit to the product family. Do you intend/plan to offer the Bergtagen rucksacks in grey, too?

I bought the Kajka 75l about 5 years ago for the exact same reason, the large duffle bag opening (easy assess to the whole pack) and the removable lid, which I've used way more then expected. The weight doesn't bother me, because of how well the harness fits. The only thing I haven't taken advantage of are the side pockets/baffles and the fact that you have to undo the clips to open the large front access is a little annoying though I see why they did this in order to add the metal bars to synch the pack tight, which is great.
However, it's too robust for what I need in all seriousness, overkill, but at least I'll have something to hand down to my kids!

I wanted a great backpack for my troubled shoulders and tried out a Kajka, that I had heard everyone raving about.
    Nah...
    That wasn't for me.
It felt sort of boxy or something. Uncharming.
Tried different ones from different manufacturers.
After trying ten backpacks, I realized I did it the wrong way.
I had tried them without any sort of weight in them...
    How foolish of me.
    So...
Back to find them all again, to try them out. Again! But this time with some weight in them!
After trying 14 backpacks (different Arcteryx, Ospreys, Klättermusen, Thules, Gregorys, Deuters, Haglöfs, Lundhags, Aarns) and finding out they ALL found those evil pressure points of mine, I started to think notning would fit me.
A guy working in a shop heard of my problems and pointed at a Kajka and suggested I'd try it out.
At the time, I was out for a walk, trying out a Gregory Baltoro 85.
It was over stuffed with things, some even strapped to the outside, so I unloaded it and put all the things in the Kajka and everything fitted inside it, to my big surprise.
I was even more surprised, when I realized the Kajka was only a 75 liter pack.
I don't know how they measure their backpacks, but there's something strange, in THAT neighbourhood...
    Anyway...
I tried it on, he helped me to adjust it right and after a few adjustments...
    Nothing!
    Not one single pressure point!
    So...
    I bought a Kajka 85 in UN-blue...
It's not perfekt, but I have tried others since I bought it and I find no need to by anythong else.
I even got a good price on Outnorth.se and bought three for my two kids and a friends kid.
I paid roughly 2080Sek for them each.
I use mine about 5 times a week...
I love how it feels with weight in it.
I love the adjustable width of the shoulder straps.
    I love the many openings.
I love the sturdiness and quality of it.
I love how clean the design looks.
I like the mesh and how sturdy it is.
Things I would have wanted done differently:
I wish it was made of a more environment friendly and lighter material.
I wish that material was waterproof.
I wish the separator and mesh inside the pack was detachable AND moveable.
I wish I was able to repair it easier (like some of the Lundhags).
I wish the poles for the big opening was made in a as strong but lighter material.
I wish the side pockets openings were in the shape of an upside down L, with a vertical and a horisontal zipper meeting on the top corner of the pocket, so I could get bigger things out and in of the pocket with much more ease, when the pack is fully stuffed.
I wish there were attachment points for attaching more straps on it.
I wish the back length adjustments was made like an upside down V, like in some of the McKinleys Yukon backpacks. I think that looks smart...
    images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/612NoQf6EFL._AC_SL1023_.jpg
I would like to see some more thinking outside the box.
I would like to know how elastic shoulder straps would feel.
I would like to know what a hip belt buckle made lika bridge would feel like.
I would like to know how a construction for the shoulder straps, that would make the shoulders and chest more unlocked and free, would feel.
I would like to know how a construction for the shoulder straps, that would make the shoulders carry the weight straight downwards instead of backwards/downwards, would feel.
I would like to know how a hip belt design that didn't obstruct the bloodflow to the thigh muscles, would feel.
I would like to know what a frontpack, supported from the hip buckle and the frame, would feel like.
    And Ted.
    Great channel, by the way.
