When I was 14, I saw Rage live with a girl I liked. Within seconds of the show starting, this young lady started doing exactly what you did as soon as the song started. I remember thinking she was too cool for me. When I was thinking this, she grabbed my hand , kissed me for the first time (on the cheek), and screamed thank you into my ear. 22 years later and she still holds my hand and screams in my ear the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
"They don't have to burn the books, they just remove em". That's my favorite freaking line. So many small gems in this song lyrically. As a guitarist, I love how RATM take these simple groovy riffs, and turn them into anthem's that move crowds. The song writing is top notch. Every Rage song has me feeling like I can overthrow the government right now by myself. After I am done listening, I remember I am just a normal bloak in my pajamas watching TH-cam while eating Dorito's. I don't even own an airsoft pistol.
“They don’t have to burn the books, they just remove ‘em” Calling out DeSantis and Florida from back in 1996! RATM was so forward thinking and prescient that their Rage still fits the 2023 world.
Never apologize for pausing and reflecting. That's why we're here. I want to hear your thoughts, your feelings, your reactions. That "Fuck." After the "Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes, not need..........While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells..." verse was absolutely perfect. That's really the only reaction to how much he dropped in a single verse. Legit one of the most powerful, potent, devastating verses of the decade. And yes, Tom is his own brand of wild genius, but the meaning is always the biggest focus to try and unpack. The military industrial complex isn't just destroying America, it's destroying lives everywhere, and Zach is gonna say how he feels about it. I always recommend lyrics on the second listen, not the first. Let the energy and whatever you pick up guide you and take you away. THEN you can soak in the layers of meaning in the lyrics and how it empowers the "rage" of the band. Next recommendations from a lifelong fan: "Wake Up." It doesn't get clearer or more on-brand than this song. "Down Rodeo" is incredible, too, of course. So so so many. Really just spin a giant wheel of their songs and you can't land on a bad one to react to and process.
Look, if you love RatM, the first Album as a whole is a must. It was one of the first albums where i did know back then the whole Lyrics and could quote them all. So here are some must must hear songs: "Know your Enemy". "Freedom" "Bullet in the Head" "Guerilla Radio" "Bombtrack" "Sleep now in the fire" (with one of the best music videos ever) "Wake up" "Calm like a Bomb"
Will never forget hearing them for the first time and Bombtrack starting an entire album of complete awe. I couldn’t say one word until the end of Freedom. Was one of the most amazing first listenings of any band I’ve ever listened to. Fucking nuts. I was a senior in highschool when it dropped.
A reaction from Aileen always brightens up my day. RATM has always been an important band for my generation. They picked up where public enemy left off in the 80s. Standing and speaking up for the little people. 🙏
Saw rage just after they released the first album...one of the best gigs I've ever seen, 30 years later and the lyrics are even truer now....we didn't learn the lessons..
Down rodeo is up there. I personally like “No Shelter”. I think it gets overlooked because it was for a Godzilla movie lol but god damn it slaps so hard
You know you are really enjoying something when you can't seem to find the words to describe it, and the ones you do seem to find you can't help but to stumble over them. LOL Having said that, you made another great song choice AileenSenpai! They have so many great songs...so you are in for a wonderful treat as you continue to dive down that musical rabbit hole. Keep it up!
Not sure if it's been mentioned but bulls on parade is basically a term to describe police in riot gear. This helps make the lyrics "they gather around the family with a pocket full of shells" more clear
I think you caught this song with the right frame of mind. You'll definitely want to listen to this repeatedly in order to absorb the message, but you are on the right track. Love your sincere reactions and comments.
I saw them at Long Beach Arena... When he started spitting lyrics, 10,000 strong started jumping up and down so hard i thought we were gonna' break the foundation! One of THE GREATEST BANDS TO EVER GRACE A STAGE... PERIOD!
I know that it does not come packaged like most rap or hip hop, but make no mistake: Zach is 100000000% MCing. He's about as MC as it gets. There's still so much from these guys for you to check out: Know Your Enemy, Testify, Take the Power Back, People of the Sun, Sleep Now In The Fire, Bombtrack, etc etc. One of my absolute favorites is Freedom - most people seem to sleep on it, but lemme tell ya, it is EPIC.
Bullet in The Head - 1993 is a great live recording of one of my favorite Rage Against The Maxchine songs, and a great through back to my first live concert with them bzck in 1994
Just watched a few videos from like a year ago "that's great let's see the home page!" ... "Omg there's so many of my favorite baaaaaaaaaaaands!!!" You're my new favorite, bisous depuis la France!
Thank you very much for that reaction Aileen. I always love your honesty and enthusiasm, but this time you really got me with your insights to one of my favorite bands. I had never considered your analysis/comparison of the refrain to the children's rhyme of "pocket full of posies," and the potential metaphor/symbolism of death there. For me the refrain is more literal, about standing up for one's "family" whoever they may be, blood or otherwise, and being willing to stand. Zack is a serious poet, and so I don't disregard his use of metaphor instead of just making a rhyme. Thanks for helping me see something new after 30 years of loving these guys. I thought your analysis was both insightful and passionate. Thanks again. Next please: "Down Rodeo" by RATM, and please, please do Pearl Jam's live performance of "Porch" from the Netherlands...you won't be disappointed...promise. [Spoiler: watch Eddie do a 25-foot vertical (2 1/2 stories) jump into a crowd.]
I'm so glad you brought up Nursery Rhymes, It's time to suggest Shoots & Ladders by Korn. They rock metal scat a bunch of nursery rhymes + bagpipes, how can anyone resist?!?
first time i listened to RATM, I thought the band was a large group just based off the sounds i was hearing listening to them. then years later i finally catch a music video and see just 3 instruments! Guitar, bass, and drums....and all 3 members are great players.
I came back from the Gulf War in 1991, I was angry, sad, anxious and depressed. RATM came out with their first album, I think, 92’ or 93’, I played it for a month straight. Zack and Tom just spoke to me, plus, “Freedom” is about Leonard Peltier; he’s a family friend and should be set free. Love this band still today! ❤❤❤
By far my favorite reactor, you see some people music touches their ears but others like you and I and many others it touches our soul. I love it. Not gon lie it can be orgasmic.
Sleep Now in the Fire is my favorite by them. ❤❤❤ I was supposed to see them live finally in the spring this year but they had to cancel the tour. 😢 I should have seen them in the 90s but went to my night class in college instead and have regretted that choice ever since.
Yes! Was waiting for you to do this one. I've heard this song dozens and dozens of times and I never once got the nursery rhyme analogy that you mentioned and I think you're dead-on. There's nothing quite like RATM; real, authentic, motivational, inspirational. Powerful stuff and the real deal.
My favorite Rage songs are probably Rodeo, and Renegades of funk they also have a great live version of I believe it’s this song with Maynard James Keenan that’s really good
I'm glad to see the weight of what Zack is saying is sinking in now. I always recommend the lyric videos for RATM because it's so easy to lose the message with such awesome instrumentals. It's amazing to think that Killing In The Name was on heavy radio rotation with lyrics like "Those who died are justified, for wearing a badge they're the chosen whites!" If you want the nastiest bass groove with profound lyrics check out Take The Power Back! I always enjoy reliving my first listens to these songs through you, these videos help people with social anxiety more than you know, thanks.
RATM is forever in my top 5 bands. They are sooooo good, guys. Other songs that you could react to are Know your enemy, Wake up, People of the sun, Snakecharmer, Testify, Calm like a bomb, Sleep now in the fire or Guerrilla Radio. For a SICK bass, it maybe isn't one of their best, but Wind bellow has a chef kiss cool bass (ok, actually all of their songs have it).
I never realize how cold the world feels until your smile shows up to warm my day. I knew this music when it was fresh, and it still pumps my adrenaline to this very day. Hell Yeah!!
An Aileen reaction a day keeps the sadness at bay 💅 So excited to see you do this song by RATM and I can’t wait to watch after work 😭 I have a sneaking suspicion that you’re gonna be grooving to everything about this song from the lyrics to way it’s written!!
Awesome reaction as always. I had friends in Catholic grade school who listened to metal and rock so attending grade school in the early 90s, i heard this along with Metallica, Korn, Alice In Chains along with many others. Great time to grow up in and these lyrics along with many other songs of theirs still reign prevelant to this day.
I saw Rage live in a tiny farm town rodeo arena in Spanish Fork utah in 1996 , I was in high school and Rage was everything back then and they did a FREE LIVE SHOW in some little farm town in utah and went over the time limit and since it was outdoors the police came and were trying to shut it down and he just kept going and going and going , amazing experience as a teenager and I love I got to experience Rage before they broke apart . And I Cavan say I’ve Never felt more energy from a crowd and band live than Rage (except maybe NF) 🙂 was epic!
Born with insight and a raised fist A witness to the slit wrist As we, move into '92 Still in a room without a view Ya got to know, ya got to know That when I say go, go, go! Amp up and amplify Defy, I'm a brother with a furious mind Action must be taken We don't need the key, we'll break in!!
Saw them do this song in a tiny 200 seat club in Hollywood before they signed to Epic, just a local band. There was 500 people there, more at the door. Unbelievable. Tom Morello was previously in a local band called Lock Up.
I'm 44 and I still remember the first time I heard Rage. The song Freedom. Check it out. I bought the cassette tape shortly after, it was 1992. That cassette never left my Walkman for months straight, everyday.
I love this song. It’s visceral in its bare and honest portrayal of how two-faced the US government and system is. “We care about the family, we rally around you”, but we’re just stoking the war machine and feeding it with these families they truly care little for.
1:15 Arms back, chin forward, eyes focused. The "ready to explode" position required when you know sh*t's about to go down. If she wasn't before, she's a metal girl now.
It's crazy that what they rapped about in the 90s is still just as valid today, in some ways even more! The amount of energy that they put into it is out of this world, especially the live performances. Parkzicht 1993 long version... one my favorite RATM performances.
This is how cool this band is. When Mtv was at it's height. With Carson Daily being the host for the youth at the time. RATM played their set. Carson was a huge fun of the band. The lead singer. Zack La Roche refused to shake his hand or look him in the face. He just gave him his back. The more Carson tried to say hi. The more Zack didn't acknowledge his presence
Beautiful reaction and what a statement "....without flipping someone off, you are listening to this incorrectly" Love it! My first intro to Rage back in the 90's was bullet in the head. Mad bollox. On the Ren front are you doing a reaction to Lost all faith please? Also saw his Crutch vid with Bibi and it tore the guts out of me, it was beautiful and tragic at the same time.
Someone did mention 'Ghost of Tom Joad' but check out the live version with Bruce Springsteen. Tom even went on tour with Bruce and played as part of his band.
Dayam! @Aileen your reaction was a total 180 from what I’ve seen so far and I love it. This looked like the real you. I’ve always taken “Rally round the family, pocket full of shells” to be about the LAPD and LASD. They’re the so called family and they close ranks. The song was released in 96, not so long after the LA riots caused by the acquittal of the LAPD officers who beat Rodney King. Lots of tension here at that time. I’ve enjoyed listening to Rage and their live concerts are exciting.
I always took it to mean you should go to any lengths to protect your family and the "They" means us Americans. Believe me, if my parents called me because someone is threatening them, I'm grabbing the 12 ga and a pocket full of shells and I'm gonna rally 'round the family. It seems to me that the government is increasingly less interested in protecting its citizens and we should always be ready to protect ourselves and our family and neighbors. Its up to us now.
@@ScottWiecenski "they" is the government and they rally round the family by paying lip service to the people while filling the military pockets full of shells
This week Tom Morello was in Chile, doing an act of government to Salvador Allende and sang in the stadium where *Victor Jara* was massacred and tortured in 1973.
What a coincidence: I wore one of my RATM t-shirts to work today and got several compliments on it. Then, when I got home and opened up TH-cam, this reaction popped up! Nice! Glad you're discovering these dudes! 🔥🔥🔥
Loved the nursery rhymes link. Watched a fair few react videos for rage and the first time I've heard this take and it honestly fits. Don't doubt the guys are are smart enough to have had this thought too
Zach De La Rocha will forever be in the Hall of Fame of artists in my book. He isn't scared of saying what he means and after he performed with Los Tigres Del Norte in regards to Caucasians taking America for themselves, I have a huge amount of respect for him.
One of my favorites by far. Tom Morello became one of my favorite guitarists growing up. So unique and does things no one else has. I've always said if I was in MMA fighter I would have to come out to one of their songs forsure. You should check out Guerrilla Radio next.
Did you know that Tom Morello also has a solo project called The Nightwatchman. It's accoustic rebel songs. very cool. Garden of Gethsemane is one of my favourite songs, very calm and beautiful with Tom's voice. The song Lazarus on Down is cool as well, it features Serj Tankian from System of a Down
I was in high school when the first Rage album dropped. Mind. Blown. And yes, Tom Morello is one of those generational talents like Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen that redefined what you could do with a guitar.
First time I saw them was in Copenhagen in 1993. ( A double concert with Smashing Pumpkins. ) 🤌 Needless to say I had to purchase 2 albums ( LP's ) right away. 😆
I think your deciphering different music is very intuitive, and knowing you like the base - i would be interested in your review on Ozzy The All Mighty Dollar and Marylin's Beautiful People, both have a good base line...
Rage came out at a time when artists weren't afraid to express their opinions, even if you didn't agree with them. Them and Public enemy among others were my foundation to the belief I can rock out and have fundamental things going on in my life at the same time. And I believe that you have listened to rage and didn't know it. Most of the members including Tom Morello are in the group Audioslave with Chris Cornell. Keep doing what you're doing beautiful 😍
I was in St Louis when Wu-Tang had to cancel. They replaced them with Atari Teenage Riot and we did almost riot at Riverport Amphitheater. Rage still kicked ass but I was so bummed not being able to see the Shaolin Clan
You mentioned the nursery rhyme "Ring around the Rosie", now think about how that pocketful of shells might be similar in meaning to the pocketful of Posies and what they were used for... 😕 The "shells" are used to cover the "stench" of the Poor (so the Rich don't notice them).
Now to my old man ramble comment.....Aileen, I have not been this excited about a reactor about to embark on some epic music in a year or so, probably when you and a couple other reactors started their NF journey. Excuse me if I gush a little or babble too much info, but I've been a fanboy of Rage since I was a barely-20yr old Sk8er punk, hearing there debut album in '92, and my mind was truly blown for the first time ever by music. I was like what is this??? How are they???? Why do I feel soooooo AAAHHHHH!!!(in a good way!!) They were soooo huge in this kids life, dysfunctional family (that's nothing unique though) no direction yet, no idea who I was or what purpose I wanted to fulfil, full of sooo much anger and angst! I'm not saying RATM alone single handedly changed all that, but it opened a door, to a different way of thinking, to a genre of music that I never knew existed, and was being created in front of my eyes, it was so full of energy, and so aggressive and in your fukin face, yet when I walked through that door, I found the best people in the world....kind, empathetic, meaningful in what they said, stood up for what they believed in, loyal to a fault, yadda yadda yadda yadda, you know the deal, when something hits ya in life and ya go...."Yeah, this is where I wanna be, these are my people, this is where I'm supposed to be"......Well RATM facilitated that moment for me. Dammit, used up all my babble credits, super short version.... Zack doesn't just sound like he's rapping, he one of the most prolific lyricists of all time, he's left off a lot different GOAT lists because his spittin' skills are over rock music, you'll find out more on that though. The band doesn't just "not worry about what they say or what people think", they have always put there money and bodies where their mouths were, donating a percent of all albums, singles and tours to charities that are close to their hearts, usually something to do with activism and social justice. They also were known to show up, unannounced with no fanfare or media coverage, to different protest or activist events to lend their support to that cause. Tom's mom is a life long activist, and met his dad while participating in the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya, in the 1960s, Tom's dad was the first U.N. ambassador for a free Kenya, his great Uncle was the first president and his great aunt the first Kenyan woman in parliament. Zack's parents are both Mexican-American and his dad was a big supporter and friends with people in the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) a rebel group that formed in Chiapas Mexico in the 90s, to oppose NAFTA and fight for indigenous peoples land rights. Zack has been a big supporter of them over the years, the flag often seen on album art work and at their concerts, a field of black with a singular red star in the center is the flag of EZLN. Ok, enough fun facts for now, can't wait to see your next reaction, you rock Aileen, as usual, GREAT REACTION!!! Much love!!
Always loved this band growing up, however, they probably wouldn’t like hearing that I would listen to some of their stuff on a helo insert going to hit a target overseas. But they always got me pumped up to go do work
I love them so much,I was there when they filmed the guerrilla video for this,I came this close to getting arrested, but I'd risk it again if the chance came up!🤘🤘🤘
When I was 14, I saw Rage live with a girl I liked. Within seconds of the show starting, this young lady started doing exactly what you did as soon as the song started. I remember thinking she was too cool for me. When I was thinking this, she grabbed my hand , kissed me for the first time (on the cheek), and screamed thank you into my ear. 22 years later and she still holds my hand and screams in my ear the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
and then albert einstein handed you 100 dollars and everyone at the concert gave you a standing ovation
What's wrong with you@@pointlessmanatee
Def in contention for Best Comment here, lol!
Best story ever!
That's awesome congratulations
Rage is timeless. They were right at the time, and they're right now.
That bass guitar is absolutely cooking. Bass guitarists don’t get enough credit.
🫂
The bass makes all their songs his tone is ridiculous
Heard that bud!
Bass filled the whole space!
"They don't have to burn the books, they just remove em". That's my favorite freaking line. So many small gems in this song lyrically. "They don't have to burn the books, they just remove em" Republicans doing this right now, we've see this before and where it leads.
I can't believe how prescient this line is.
“They don’t have to burn the books, they just remove ‘em” Calling out DeSantis and Florida from back in 1996! RATM was so forward thinking and prescient that their Rage still fits the 2023 world.
Amen. Just go ahead and name a time in history when we considered the folks burning/banning books as the Good Guys.
@@chrisgilbert9076 boy you so tarded do some research
Love seeing young people reacting to songs from the 90's early 00's and realizing that they're still, if not more so, applicable today.
As long as people abuse power, RATM will be relevant. Let's hope for their obscurity.

That second verse is so damn powerful
The beauty of simplicity, that riff is bloody iconic.

Heard freedom on spin radio one Sunday night as a teen while laying in bed and it blew my mind. Been hooked ever since

"Voice of the Voiceless" is probably my favorite underrated RatM song. "Township Rebellion" is way up there too.

You know.. Fads tend to overgrow and counter-themselves.
It's the true case of "die believing sometjing or live lomgvenoughbto become a biggot"
We were young, enjoying cool music, the lessons of the lyrics went right over our heads. 30 years later, ah fuck, that's what they meant!
RATM are sell outs as bad as Metallica
RATM is truly one of a kind. Right place, right time. So 90's but still relevant and hard hitting in '23.
I was in high school. Rage, AIC, & TOOL, taught us many things, especially: fuck censorship and ALL POLITICS. The world has changed.
Has been a gem for 30 years now. The sad thing is the lyrics are still applicable
Down Rodeo is my #1 pick out of all Rage songs. It contains every single element that made the band great, all in the best possible form.
Yep
Totally agree, there is so much to unpack in the lyrics, the shock factor of the first verse is something that i always love to see people react to.
Wake up!!!!
Down rodeo is up there. I personally like “No Shelter”. I think it gets overlooked because it was for a Godzilla movie lol but god damn it slaps so hard
Love your reaction and relaxed language, not afraid to use everyday expressions that are not well seen on youtube.
Best reaction I’ve seen to any song period
This entire album “Evil EMPIRE” is my favorite of their albums !!! EVERY SONG on the album is amazing

Zach comes from a hardcore punk background and this song is probably the best example of him combining that style with rapping.
“ashes in the fall” is such a powerful song, and further allows Morello to make you wonder how the hell he can make the guitar make the noises he can.

Originally Springsteen but RATM's version is way better and tells the story way more clearly. Love this song!

Bombtrack
I never realize how cold the world feels until your smile shows up to warm my day. I knew this music when it was fresh, and it still pumps my adrenaline to this very day. Hell Yeah!!
“That fukin’ riff though…”
When the music hits so hard, you momentarily gain a Canadian accent 😂
Omg Shadow of Intent hoodie. 😍🤘
Born with insight and a raised fist
A witness to the slit wrist
As we, move into '92
Still in a room without a view
Ya got to know, ya got to know
That when I say go, go, go!
Amp up and amplify
Defy, I'm a brother with a furious mind
Action must be taken
We don't need the key, we'll break in!!
Sleep Now in the Fire,Bombtrack,Renegades of Funk, Fistful Of Steel...I could go on and on. You have so many amazing tunes left
Saw them do this song in a tiny 200 seat club in Hollywood before they signed to Epic, just a local band. There was 500 people there, more at the door. Unbelievable. Tom Morello was previously in a local band called Lock Up.
props, i have been listening to rage for like 20 years, and i didnt realize until last week that it was a play on ring around the rosie.
You took me back to 2000, it was the first time I saw them live in Greece..
I love how much you get into the song right off the bat it's great
I'm 44 and I still remember the first time I heard Rage. The song Freedom. Check it out. I bought the cassette tape shortly after, it was 1992. That cassette never left my Walkman for months straight, everyday.
One track I love is called "Ashes in the Fall". RATM was incredible and every track is a banger. Every. Single. One. 🤘
Shit blows me away every time, it just pushes energy from my core throughout my entire body, I don't even know how to explain the feeling
I love this song. It’s visceral in its bare and honest portrayal of how two-faced the US government and system is. “We care about the family, we rally around you”, but we’re just stoking the war machine and feeding it with these families they truly care little for.
This takes me back. I remember when Rage first hit the scene. I was 11 years old just rocking out to Beastie Boys and Rage
I’m so glad someone else connected the “pocket full of posies” thing, thought I was crazy.
Tom Morello and Lane Staney were in a group called class of 1999 where they did a good version of Pink Floyd another brick in the wall
Its more about spending on military and weapons instead of taking care of citizens...what we don't know keeps the contracts movin'
He got paid well and nobody showed up. 😂
I love how RATM causes you to break out the F-bombs! And I'm dead serious. These guys are fucking legends!
Used to go running to this with my walkman. Over and over and over. So good
What a coincidence: I wore one of my RATM t-shirts to work today and got several compliments on it. Then, when I got home and opened up TH-cam, this reaction popped up! Nice! Glad you're discovering these dudes! 🔥🔥🔥
How I like to look at the first reaction of a person to my favorite songs! I'm waiting for new reactions!!!
Yo that mention about the baby metal collab - amazing song
Thankyou
Vocal style: In opera they call it Sprechstimme.
Remember the drummer's protest at the VMA awards? That was great.
Rage has always been one of the most influential bands growing up. I love your taste in music
Did you know that Tom Morello also has a solo project called The Nightwatchman. It's accoustic rebel songs. very cool. Garden of Gethsemane is one of my favourite songs, very calm and beautiful with Tom's voice. The song Lazarus on Down is cool as well, it features Serj Tankian from System of a Down
Yeah, my young years. 17, 18. This is what was in my catalog. Grew up with this.
I wonder if "pocket ful of shells" is a play on that nursery rhyme line "...pocket full of Posies...we all fall down"
AileenSenpai is just: TOO SWEET!!!!!!😱🤘🏾🤘🏾
You nailed the eaxact angry look one should have when litsening to RATM! GJ!
I was in high school when the first Rage album dropped. Mind. Blown. And yes, Tom Morello is one of those generational talents like Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen that redefined what you could do with a guitar.
First time I saw them was in Copenhagen in 1993. ( A double concert with Smashing Pumpkins. ) 🤌
Needless to say I had to purchase 2 albums ( LP's ) right away. 😆
The way she said "that fuckin riff tho" and that stank face she held through the song 🖤
I saw them with wu tang clan and both groups did 4 songs together.
The "shells" are used to cover the "stench" of the Poor (so the Rich don't notice them).
Much love!!
The guitar is amazing. Love that you appreciate how insanely good it is.
Saw them once live, and I was hooked since that. It was 1995. Iwas twenty than, but now I`m 48 now and nothing has changed since this times.
Always loved this band growing up, however, they probably wouldn’t like hearing that I would listen to some of their stuff on a helo insert going to hit a target overseas. But they always got me pumped up to go do work
Saw them last year. Best concert of my life
And the messages from this record and others - literally 26 years ago - and still very much relevant today.
I love them so much,I was there when they filmed the guerrilla video for this,I came this close to getting arrested, but I'd risk it again if the chance came up!🤘🤘🤘
