Made a spontaneous two hour road trip to Atlanta to see them play live in a pretty small venue right before this album came out. We were probably among the first folks to hear this final version of this song. Obviously, that night was an absolute blast.

My favorite thing about these songs is how well he manages to show just how good he is at song and music writing while at the same time making a song that sounds like a pure amateur failing miserably at rocking. Like, we get to hear both what he hears in his imagination, but also we break to outside the booth to hear what he actually sounds like and its hilarious! As another example, his song kickapoo when he basically creates a song that sounds EXACTLY like what a 12 year old obsessed with rock would think makes for a good rock song, dragons cursing, sex, etc. But the rest of it demonstrates his actual talent in making a song that tells a story with constantly changing always awesome music.
yes and no. The whole narrative about 2 musicians making a deal with the devil to pay their rent has been the lore of Tenacious D since the beginning. Tribute and the Pick of Destiny are just 2 interpretations of this. the story has grown over the years and POD is the progressed version of what Tribute was in their early days.
There's a long tradition of musicians doing battle with the Devil. "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" is one example, but I it goes much further back than that.

IMO tribute perfectly encapsulates the d which only became apparent after seeing the BtS stuff from tPoD. Specifically the parts about the master exploder scene and the rock off talking about how everything in your mind is idealized for good or bad.

I think it was a few months ago in an interview someone asked how Jack Black does what he does with his energy in content. He can basically turn it on and off when the camera is rolling and when it's all done, he's just a regular guy. That's so awesome.
