I'm 60. My mom told me about how my grandmother taught her how to dance the Charleston in the kitchen as child in the 40's. After my mother passed about 5 yrs. ago, I told my aunt, (older than mom) that story. My aunt was delighted as she told me about how Grandma had taught her how to dance the Charleston in the kitchen years before that. This video is precious. I miss the old folks. God bless you, sir...

My brother and I were spending the summer with our grandparents in the late 60's. He and I decided to practice some of the dances of that time. Our grandmother stopped washing the kitchen dishes and joined us in the room where we were. She commented, "That some nice dancing you all are doing, but do you know the Charleston?" We shook our heads "no," she then busted out the meanest Charleston, and then said," Now that's what you call dancing!"

It’s great to see modern dancers that are able to convey the joy and spirit of a dance that is one hundred years old. There are a lot of similarities to shuffle dancing that I enjoy watching as well. Imagine a hundred years from now and some young person revisiting the moves of 2020.

So watch again; I wonder, do you see it? Not a change of angle. No cutaway. One take. ONE TAKE. Sure, if you have the slightest idea about choreography, you can see where Maria knows to conserve her energy, to vary her moves to keep the beat, etc - and that's what makes this so remarkable. There are many who are more famous, who can do the multi-take and different angle stuff, but this extremely talented dancer is one of only two or three I've seen in the last decade to post a one-take video.
Utterly entrancing, totally delightful, a complete celebration of being... thank you, Maria.

If you ever get into some of the less popular "golden age" movies, you'll see a lot more freestyle moves! Especially Black ones since they didn't have as much of a budget, Black American movies of the time ended up being a free for all showcase of everyone's skill with barely a plot stringing every scene together, so you can really immerse yourself in loving the individual musicality 🤗💜

the only movie scene that comes to my mind is the swimming pool scene in "it's a wonderful life" where jimmy stewart and donna reed do the charleston and then alfalfa switzer's character opens up the gymnasium floor with a swimming pool underneath. they do a very good dance and then so funny when they fall in and all the others jumping in to join them. very memorable.

@@lymarie1974 Way ahead of you, I've watched this dozens of times, there's just so much to the way this young lady interprets the music. The whole dance is relaxed and a tad informal, like she's on a dance floor and not a stage, just having fun. Then just now (of course I had to see it again), I'm seeing how she put together every bar of the choreography to be perfectly suited to the arrangement: the clarinet solo is playful and so is she, then the trombone & muted trumpet dialogue are just a little raunchy, and there she is too; then the band comes back in on a charge, and she cuts right loose with it. My favorite element of all is while she is >such< a beautiful woman, the dance isn't so much sexy, even with all those tres-risque moves, as just very, very genuinely feminine. This is something very special here.

The women of that generation who were still alive when I was a child -- a grandmother, a great-aunt-- born in the mid-1890s and would have expected to spend their whole lives in floor-length skirts once they had become women -- and then THIS in their young-women years, with hemlines above the knees -- and when I think what THEIR older people must have thought, stunned and shocked --- what a generational change that was. As for my grandfathers (b. 1885, 1893), they may have thought that in terms of girl-watching, they had hit a cosmic-event-level jackpot....

100 Years later and the Charleston is ALIVE and well. The original "Flappers" would have (happy) tears in their eyes and a SMILE on their faces from seeing this homage to their timeless dance moves. Sad that we are living in the 2020's rather than the 1920's. That was a carefree and joyous time post WW1. But the specter of WW2 was looming on the horizon. I shudder to think that history may repeat itself.

Women couldn't vote until 1920. Post WW1. The West Virginia Mine Wars didn't subside until 1921. Tulsa Race Massacre, 1921. Carefree and joyous? The Progressive Era was just beginning. And just a few years later, a Fascist threat grew in Europe leading to WW2, with many well known right-wing American supporters delaying U.S. involvement. The Progressive Movement is alive and well today, but under threat from the chaotic New Right. Their anti-democratic extremists shout that a great battle may be at hand. I shudder to think that history may repeat itself.
