Ya, I keep flip flopping. I didn’t use it much in our last boat because there are laundromats everywhere or services that are cheaper and faster. And we don’t wear much on the boat so it’s super easy to toss everything in a tub and do it by hand. One option is a 3k version which is tiny but could help in a pinch. - Holly
🤣 Both designing a boat and selecting options always require tradeoffs... in this case we're happy with this tradeoff as you either reduce the bed width to keep the hull width/performance or increase the hull width and lose on performance. Outremer lowered the bed height compared to the 51 so it will be easier to get in it. 'Crawling' is good exercise to keep you young and mobile, which is important when living on a boat 😉
We are 2 Canoes an 2017 O51 and we are sailing around the world. We are in Fiji today and we used the washing machine today for example. I think it is one of the best comfort options we got. The next one was the heating system which heats the hot water even in summer. We do not have a generator built in.
@@SailingAWEN yes, the hydronic one. It circulates hot liquid to 6 individually controlled heating units in various part of the boat. We also had a three way hot water tank. We told Outremer where to find it. It permits heating the water with electricity, engine coolant and the heater circulating liquid. In summer we put all the thermostats to off and the heater then only heat the water. Takes 30 minutes from cold to hot. Furthermore we sailed the Med from February to November. It is beautiful sailing in Feb to June and Sept to Nov but the heater was very handy. Our sail configuration is main plus Solent. If I had to do it again I would put Genoa and staysail on inner forestay. The cruise rythme is 2-3 weeks sailing and then go to marina for 2-3 days for provisioning, wash the boat and wash the clothing. We do it at Marina because of the water supply is infinite. The public machines available at marinas are not in areas where I want to spend times. That was ok for my college days but not now. We get the sheets done at the cleaners. They are too big for our machine. After 7 years of cruising I still debate if I should have installed a generator. I have not come to a conclusion. On the 51 the generator was placed at the base of the m ast which remove space for diesel tanks. I thought it was a bad compromise. I rather have larger fuel tanks. Outremer put ,or did put, 50 meters of chain as standard for the anchor. It is ok for the Med or the Caribbean but not enough for the Pacific. Insists on 75 meters. I installed an SSB for long range communication and weather update. It would have been better to have an iridium with an external antenna. I now have both. We have 2 air conditioners. A small one in the master cabin which we can use on battery at anchor which we use for 30 minutes to cool the cabin down before going to bed in hot nights. A larger one in the salon. The large one is handy when stuck in a marina in a hot summer day. For example we were in Tunisia at 42c or Barcelona at 37c. The ac was treasure. We also use it to cool the boat after coming back to the boat after an excursion ashore for shopping for example. Nothings heats faster than a locked up boat in a marina. Hope this help
OMG!!! What a boat. Forget O52, it’s just OMG! I can see why you fell in love with the new design. It sits so well between the 51 and 55. Outremer nailed it, in my humble opinion. I just renewed another 4 weeks of euromillions lottery tickets... it’s the only way I could afford one... I look forward to the next updates. Washing machine or no washing machine... what a cliff hanger! 🤣 Je suis excited for you both. X
I am just listening to your Meltami podcast on a walk. Good thing no one is around or they would look at me strangely as I say out loud ‘Je suis Stephane’ at the start of each episode 🤣
You do not need to win a lottery, Once they are underway sailing the ocean blue all you will need to do is wait until theu are anchored in a secluded cove, board their vessel, kill them, cut their bodies up into fish bait and them legally salvage their vessel.
If you are concerned about saving weight, the carbon crossbeam is a must. You will save a lot of weight at the very end of the boat, where it matters for pitching moment. You will also end up with a much stiffer boat overall that is less prone to twisting motions. It is an expensive option, but worth it.
Agree with your comments but at some point you have to draw a line based on your budget 😞 For the Outremer 52 it is a more difficult decision than with the O55 as the bowsprit length with the compression beam (fiberglass with carbon reinforcement) is almost the same as the one with the carbon crossbeam so you don't get the bonus of additional sail area for extra performance as you do with the O55. The price was quite high and ended up being too much for us to justify the amount of weight saved ($/kg) and the extra stiffness.
I remember seeing this update 6 months ago and you all stated that you anticipated a July 2023 delivery, which now is about 4 months or less away. What has been going on with the build so far? I know you stated you had hull #4, were you able to go over and film some of the assembly and manufacturing phases? Please provide an update on your current status. Maybe can use the COMMUNITY SECTION if you dont want to produce a video. Shalom and Blessings to you and your family!
Hi Michael, delivery is scheduled for August 1st. We've been posting weekly pictures of the boat build on FB and Instagram, check out the progress there. We'll be in La Grande Motte towards the end of May so expect more pictures and videos then. Cheers!
We're confident it will be completely different as there is no middleman anymore. There is nothing like being able to have direct communication with Outremer and meeting the key individuals face to face.
You are clearly going to have such a good time with this . I was wondering , how much of the 3 ton of extras will be taken up by the options? ( like washing mc) . What’s on the ‘dry’ boat? Of course some expensive options may save wt??? What will be your final ‘owners’ gear Max wt?….. and will you use it all? Thanks for sharing , glad you decided against the very expensive carbon beam/ bowsprit combo . Cheers Warren

Having a galley down option to open up the cockpit to the saloon area would be perfect. Just put a sink + fridge/pantry/minibar on the port side of the maindeck. And the galley down can eat up some of the customizable free space.
And that's why there are so many catamaran builders coming up with different concepts to respond to many different requirements. We personally like the convenience of having a galley in the salon area since most of the time it will be just the two of us.

Good to hear… Lucky you, another month before we can see and sail on an Outremer 52. You’re correct about hull #1, ours (hull #4), will be put in the water early June and delivered to us early august. We cannot wait…
Totally understand. We’re headed to La Grande Motte at the end of May for Outremer Week and to see our boat for the first time. It will be put in the water at the beginning of June and delivered to us on August 1st. Our plan is to start documenting those major milestones and cover our selected options. The sailing will truly start this summer.
great video guys! cant wait to see what options you end up choosing and I hope you walk us through what makes the cut ;) the Outremer 52 has us very excited!!! hopefully in a future video you could provide some info on pricing and major options?

New sub here ! My wife and I are shopping hard to find our ideal cruising boat. Your experience is very valuable to us. We live on the Atlantic side of Canada and like you, Stephane, I come originally from Brittany. The plan is to spend 6 months in Europe, live on the boat 24/7 and fly back to Canada to live winter at its best. My original thought was to buy the Amel 50 (mono hull) but, being a tall guy (6,4), I start to think that I could feel claustrophobic pretty quickly…Can’t wait to watch your next video. Thank you ! Salut Francois. Being able to stand straight in your boat is key otherwise it will get old very quickly. If you go in the direction of a cat, it will be important to ideally be able to look forward without bending while standing in the salon or cockpit. Hopefully your wife is fairly tall as well or it will be your job to open and close all the hatches. That was a side effect we had not considered but boats are all about trade-offs :-)
Congrats- happy for you guys! I have been following your adventures since your first Covert Castaway podcast. Is the black hardware anodized aluminum? Look into how it is done and the durability. I went onto a very new Balance 482 and this black hardware on the forward bow seats was already getting worn so worth checking it out and how it is hopefully different from Balance.

Hi Border, we did not but have since been on a Windelo 54 at the Cannes boat show. We like the concept but with a circumnavigation project like ours we would not feel comfortable to go with a fairly new boat company and with so many innovations (hull material, electric propulsion...). Electric is definitely the future but it will take a long time for the technology to mature in the boating industry in our opinion (it is not the same scale as the car industry).
the lady is right, you sail faster between the islands so you arrive earlier so you have plenty of time to wash your clothing manually , so no need for a wash machine, absolutely right
After talking to cruisers who sailed in remote areas we changed our minds and selected a 3kg washing machine so now we will have more time to read comments from followers at anchor 😉
Huge improvement over the O51, congrats on getting one of the first few hulls! You spoke a lot about performance and weight but didn’t give us any specs on how this new boat stacks up. What are they expecting the lightship displacement to be? SA/D & D/L ratios and how they compare to the outgoing 51 and other boats you considered. I’m sure it will be an awesome performer 👍🏻
This is such a great question, with a two part answer. First, the specs on light displacement for the boats we looked at is relatively easy to get. The numbers for Outremer 52 weren’t public up until now as they are launching it. But getting numbers heavy/loaded is much harder because it’s debatable as to who is telling the truth, aside from the ‘look us in the eyes’ numbers we have from Outremer which we feel confident about. We have a spreadsheet for all the boats but are much less confident in exact numbers on the other boats so went by the 3T ballpark overall. Second, the loaded weight is theoretical until you know what you want to add as options on the structure of the boat to either take away or add weight AND the personal items…once you weigh the boat full. Right now we are working through a different weight spreadsheet for everything now. Finally, what mattered to us is the 3T delta light and loaded and working towards that goal in picking options and capacity. So net net, we set a 3T capacity target and can share our own decisions to keep the weight under that number in a future episode or podcast, once we are set on the final decisions. Hope this helps.
