- Today I'm answering another very common question I get about paper mache, which is "how can I make my paper mache sculpture smoother? I can't believe my blog has been online for ten whole years! And this is one of the most common questions people ask.

Thank you thank you for going over all these options and their pros and cons! I'm working on my first paper mache mask in a decade and I want it very smooth, I was hoping I would be able to use joint compound but I was also worried about cracking when the mask flexes - the acrylic gesso over the top is brilliant! I can't wait to try it!

I love paper Mache but yes, I’m currently sculpting a witch and wanted a more realistic look vrs a super crafty job of a a homemade witch

Hi Miss! Is it okay to wet the newspaper and mold it on my pattern and just wait to let it dry? My hands aren't that strong to crumple thick papers.
I'm not sure. You'd have to give it a try.

I'm not sure what you mean. If you create something with a mold and it doesn't come out smooth, you can use the techniques in the video. I rarely use molds, myself. Be sure to watch some of the other videos in my channel to get a better feel for the process.

Do you think this would work if I’ve already put acrylic gesso on my paper mache?
There were a lot of different options in this video so I'm not sure which one you're referring to. However, the gesso could make it difficult for anything to stick to it. I'd try taking some fine sandpaper and use it to just rough up the surface a little to help make it stick better. Lately, I've been using the drywall joint compound a lot for smoothing paper mache. Is joint compound safe to use going compound on a mask a kid is going to wear? Thanks
I wouldn't put it on the inside of a mask because it could dry out the skin. You wouldn't do that, anyway, but I thought I'd mention it. I don't think you'd want to use it on a mask for a really young child, either, because it's not edible. Other than that, I can't see why it would matter.
Love this video I just found you and subscribed. I'm not sure if you will answer me or if someone else could give me a little help I would appreciate it. I've been working on a paper mache project but I'd like to add a little bit more detail. Should I use paper mache pulp or should I use paper mache clay? I'm making angel wings. I would like some more detail in them. As you might have guessed I'm brand new to paper mache LOL
Are the wings made with paper strips and paste? You can add paper mache clay to them, but you might get a better result if you use my air dry clay recipe, instead. It's almost the same ingredients, but there isn't as much paper so you can get much finer details. @@UltimatePaperMache thank you so much for your help. Yes it's made with newspaper strips. And a friend of mine told me to use liquid fabric starch instead of paper mache paste. I've done a couple layers of the newspaper on the Armature that I made. It's dried nicely. Anyway have you heard of anybody using fabric starch instead of paste? I've already put so much work into it I'd hate to think it's not going to turn out. But live and learn anyway your input is appreciated. ️ ❤️
@@ritawashere5787 I haven't used the fabric starch myself, but I know people who do, and they say it works really well. Your sculptures should turn out just fine. :)
The way i do my "paper mache" is using toilet paper, and then i mix about half PVA glue with half water and i use that as my paste.
PVA glue is the cheapest way i have found, for me anyway, seems to be stronger too.
But it still has that slight messy look to it which i can't figure out how to get rid of.
Lately, I've been using a paper-thin layer of pre-mixed drywall joint compound over the paper strips and paste, and smoothing if off with a damp finger or sponge.
thanks for this, I'm making a paper mache dragon and I've covered it with paper mache (which I counted as paper clay since is was mushed up but I thought wrong), and it's a relatively small dragon so the texture is 'too big'. These were some helpful ideas

Can I use the paper mache clay over the mask made from newspaper paper mache?
Yes, you can do that. It's good idea to put down a layer of paper strips first, in fact, because the paper mache clay isn't perfectly smooth, and it's really hard. The paper strips are more comfortable against the skin/.
@@UltimatePaperMache Thank you yes I made the mask on Styrofoam head model and used newspaper strips by ripping it for my paper mache. I also made a skull mask but I made look like it was broken in half. Can I use your Paper mache clay on that to the textures on a skull?

Does someone knows what to do if theres cracks? I don't know if they said it in the video.??
If you're using paper mache clay and you get cracks, it may be because the underlying form can't shrink slightly as the pm clay dries and shrinks. But it's easy to fix - just use some left-over paper mache clay to cover the cracks. It will stick to dried paper mache clay.

Is paper mache sandable?
Yes, it is.
My paper mache clay doesnt look as smooth and thin texture as yours should i put less toilet paper in i used hand mixer for 5 min to mix it well i still have lumps and thicker clay
Is it possible that you're using the DAP brand of joint compound? There are a few brands in other countries that also make a thicker, stiffer mixture. If that's not the problem, you may be squeezing out too much of the water after you soak the paper. If you do that, the fibers can't fall apart again when their mixed. Try adding just a little more joint compound and glue, and mix again. That might help.

Another question from a newbie with NO knowledge...
for making paper mache masks to wear, is wearing joint compound 'safe' or non toxic enough that a kid could wear it all day without ending up in a hospital from toxic chemicals or something :)
I don't think it would be a great idea. Not because of anything toxic, but because joint compound is mostly calcium carbonate (chalk, essentially) and it would dry out the skin if it was in direct contact for that long. I would put some felt or foam strips on the inside of the mask to keep it up off the face. It would be much more comfortable that way, and the skin could breathe.

Ok, so then the JC is fine for using in masks to actually wear, and lining the back is best for extended wear and comfort... I'm very relieved to hear... I was getting worried that the joint compound would not be 'safe' to actually wear (due to toxic chemicals or something) - I warned you I was new! :) Very happy!! I made a 'test mask' that was pretty much a flop... I can't wait to try again!!
