    This was lots of fun to watch. In Tampa, I would spend several hours on the roof top parking just watching them come and go. My family would get them confused with the L10-11, but I knew better. Would never fly the DC-10 after flight 191 and especially an American Airlines, but I was forced to do just that. An "equipment " change was made to my flight in 1983 when 191 was still fresh in my mind. Sitting at our gate in SF, the big silver beast pulled up. My husband and I were flying space available, non revenue, but I still put up a fight with him about getting onto this plane. I had what is now known to be a panic attack while boarding the plane. I never flew a wide bodied jet before and was impressed and terrified at the same time. We took the last 2 seats on the plane at the very back. The plane tappers to just 2 seats and it was sort of cozy. American still had the TV camera of the take-off roll, yep. It turned out to be the best flight as far as comfort I ever had. Smooth as could be, drink cart parked behind us and a delicious steak dinner.

    • @bobgreene2892
      @bobgreene2892 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Chicago crash of American flight 191 wasn"t the fault of DC10 design, but resulted from bad AA ground crew maintenance procedure. These bozos actually used a fork lift to "simplify" the process of reinstalling an engine after maintenance.

    • @brianwong7285
      @brianwong7285 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      AFAIK American Airlines first introduced that TV camera showing the take-off roll sometime before 191’s crash (many believe that the camera option gave the passengers the frightening reality: that they were all going to die.)

  • @MarshallBennett64
    @MarshallBennett64 9 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    DC-10 was an amazing aircraft despite the accidents. Flight 191 was the fault of maintenance workers using short cuts to remove the wing engines. The Turkish Airlines crash was due to a cargo door that wasn't fitted with a repair kit as it should have been. The DC-10 got a lot of bad publicity when in fact it should have been the airlines that were flying them and their maintenance crews.

      Sorry, Hawaiian Airlines.
      But, those were repainted American
      Airlines jets.
      Here is the story. After Douglas Aircraft
      laid me, and about 20,000 of my closest
      friends off, I went to work, in Honolulu,
      for a company that shipped exotic flowers
      to the Mainland. (That is you all, in the
      continental USA.)
      One day, I was driving past the inter-island
      terminal, to get to Hawaiian's cargo station,
      I saw that DC-10, with a rainbow going from
      wingtip to wingtip!
      I WISH to this day, that I had had a camera!

    This is outstanding footage of a classic airliner. I was able to routinely watch aircraft like this take off and land during my Army and Navy days when I was stationed in Hawaii and Florida. My duty stations were located very close to Honolulu International and Orlando International respectively, and both places had public viewing areas that were close to the runways. What fond memories this provides me.

    It's crazy how fast the times changed. Twin engine jets were forced to stick to routes 60 mins and under, then the tri-jets came and were the most popular airplane configuration in the 80's. But when twin engine jets changed, they lifted the rule of twin engine jets being forced to stick to short routes. then tri-jets were quickly dropped. and this is why the MD-11 didn't go so well because it came in during the time of twin engine jets starting to rule the long haul flights, and fuel prices continued to rise, and tri-jets used up alot more fuel than a twin engine. and this was the demise of tri-jets. I still think the L-1011 has some tech that should be put into modern planes.

    • @bobgreene2892

    Truly outstanding historical footage with the buzz saw sound that tickles you from the inside out. Those were the days, decent leg room, no 3 hour flights on CRJ-100's, or going coast to coast in a 737-800, but big birds that were open with seats that still had cushion inside and reclined a nice distance. You even had FA's that had weight and appearance checks as well as personality, today's unhappy mob would basically fail the checks.

    Beautiful airplane! Excellent video. A lot of greaser landing here. Not sure what's the bad rap about this airplane. It's not a death trap, not as much as any 747 out there. People need to do their research, and find that most DC-10 incidents/accidents were not the airplane's fault. I loved flying in it, and working on it. Besides, no other airplane ever had a location called "The Patio", and I recall the view was excellent from up there! Thanks for sharing!

    When the md-11 came into service the flights were direct LAX-GVA.
    Strangely, as of the time of this comment in 2022, Geneva no longer has direct flights to Los angeles. They gave up the direct flights to LAX when they gave up their md-11s ...but would also be able to do it with an A340 or A330. ..I don't know why they don't.

    UA 232 was mostly a maintenance issue. What you're thinking of was the Turkish Airlines 981 crash in Paris 1974. Douglas rushed the aircraft into service without addressing safety issues they had seen in their Long Beach testing facility.
    Also, AA 191 (1979) was a combination of factors: negligence on the part of AA maintenance, design flaw on the flaps,and a flawed FAA procedure to reduce engine speed too close to the stall speed. Finally AA did NOT purchase a redundant stick shaker!

    How awesome. I was lucky enough to fly in a DC10 twice, HNL to YVR on Canadian in 1993 and LGA or EWR to Detroit on United with the 70s livery in 1994. Comfortable and spacious and a United F/A was seated next to me into Detroit and she remarked how fast we were going approaching the landing...love how the doors were electrically operated to go up into the ceiling and the coat storage which also went up into the ceiling.

    0:53 if only the CF6 engines on today's 747's and 767's made as loud a buzz as those DC-10's, I'd be a happier AVgeek

    To keep thrust symmetrical, the third engine had to be mounted on the centerline of the fuselage. The only places to do that are either the vertical stabilizer (like the DC-10 and MD-11) or the very rear of the fuselage (like the L1011 and the 727.)

    There was so much Variety back then, not just boring Airbus & stuff, I miss them days, the 747, DC-10, MD-11, Concorde, etc were the thing every Airline wanted :( Too bad most of them retired

    My all-time favorite commercial aircraft. The DC-10 was a brute, power-wise. It was the only plane I flew in the 80s that got up to altitude so fast, it had time to level out for a while before descent going Dallas to Austin. The DC-10 took off like a rocket ship headed for the moon.

    @robinbrannon1 The initial model, the DC-10-10, was intended for high-density, domestic flights, and therefore only had a range of 3300 nmi. The -30 and -40 were marketed as intercontinental versions, with greater fuel capacity and range, and subsequently increased gross weight. The fourth landing gear was added to evenly distribute the extra weight and provide additional braking.

    Out of many DC-10s seen, only one airline returned to LAX (SAS), but using A330s. Swissair went bankrupt 2001-2002 and was replaced by Swiss International Air Lines and uses 777-300ERs
