I used to have a cat, and he got his name from this movie because I was leaving my partner alone for a week and we got him the same time. We hadn't yet decided on a name, but as I was leaving, I said to him, "Well, I guess he can be your Wilson, when you miss me. So hold him tight and think of me when you do." So the name stuck. And throughout the years, he was always there. He always wanted to sit on my lap while I did my online school. He always wanted to be near me when I did some menial thing, and above all, he always, ALWAYS, slept next to me on my bed. All I had to do was call his name and he'd be there, running up whatever stairs, jumping onto whatever pile, or sitting there next to me when I needed him. He was my one and only buddy. Now, his spot on the bed is empty. My lap is cold because I don't have the warmth of him sitting there. I hear no noise as I cook dinner because he's not there to meow at me. My Wilson was taken far too soon, and I didn't have the money to get him his operation. I couldn't afford the treatment. He died because I couldn't be there for him, and it's something I'll never forgive myself for. So when Tom Hanks' character is sobbing because he's saying "I'm sorry Wilson," It's me, saying it to my little buddy. There's not a day that I go where I don't think of him. But this moment lives inside me forever, and will always be there no matter what happens in my life. He was and will always be, my friend.

How about a cop who lost his partner in the line of duty, even though he was a stinky, smelly, nasty dog? Tom Hanks is a legend who could crush our hearts, and we'd always love him.
The single, saddest scene in any piece of cinema ever made. Because Wilson represented everyone he'd ever known, he wasn't just losing some volleyball, it was like he was losing every friend and kin in his life all at once. It's an ingenious scene in that it touches hard on the human psyche and truly establishes what it means to innately be an incredibly social creature, which we all are.
Tom is a master and probably the best actor to ever exist. I lost my dog of 12 years to horrible circumstances and this scene reminds me of that day. I bawl every time I see this scene not just because of my dog but because he has so much love and compassion for a volleyball. It was his best friend, just because something doesn’t have a conscious does not mean you can’t connect on such a strong level that most people don’t understand. In his eyes, he just lost his pal and he blames himself for not waking up in time to save him. This is a perfect example of the love and compassion a person can show especially when it’s the only thing in the world you have. When my dog died I thought I was gonna die. I could have saved my dog but I didn’t because I was asleep. I still sit at her grave and tell her I’m sorry because if I would have been awake within two minutes none of it would have happened. She was viciously attacked by another dog and if I had just gotten there two minutes early she would still be here.

Despite searching for hours, I never found him. That night, next morning, on the flight back home, and at home I couldn't stop myself from crying like this. Even now I'm crying as it all comes flooding back after seeing this, and the recently released PAW Patrol movie.

My husband didn’t really care for Tom Hanks or his movies. But after watching Castaway, he started appreciating and loving him. Apparently it took Tom, by himself, and his relationship with a volleyball to change his mind.
I always cry on this scene and if you think about it…. It’s just an object, a volleyball. But when you are so heavily isolated the way Chuck was - a volleyball is your only form of communication to anything other than yourself. And yes it’s an object yet look at the way Tom really made Chuck’s character near perfection. His acting was insane, amazing, raw, emotional, and real. Just epic. Admittedly my favorite character he has ever played in every one of his movies and easily the best Tom Hanks movie as well. Amazing job, Tom. Amazing acting. So intense.
Sigh I'm crying. It also reminds me of this cat I had growing up name Lucy. From 1996-2013 I lived with this cat and when she passed away it messed me up because we were so close. She passed before I could say goodbye. So tom hanks in this movie losing Wilson I can emphasize.
This movie is deeper than a lot of people think. That plane crash wasn't coincidence. It was a sign. I also feel like in the beginning they make it seem like his marriage was better than what it really was and they were like soulmates, but it only took 4 years for her to re-marry. Really? I feel like his character was just going through the motions before that crash. Out of the few things that were salvageable after that plane crash wilson would be the most important. At first it's like "wtf is he going to do with a volleyball?" That volleyball kept him sane. Sanity is what kept him alive. It kept him sharp. He would second and third guess himself talking to that volleyball keeping him on point. I know what it feels like to be cut off from the world and isolated. Most of the time It's the things we overlook and take for granted that are the most important. Which was ultimately himself in this case. It kept him locked in for those years. It gave him an imagination which built to a routine/system to give him a reason to wake up and fight another day. That's not insanity that's sanity. It was more than just a volleyball. It was him. His alter ego. Wilson was just an extension of himself. A guy that he needed to tap into before he moved on in life. His bloody hand print used for the face. It was an object challenging/channelling himself to survive and evolve. I dont think he would've survived/got off that island without it. He just didn't lose a sentimental belonging. He lost a part of himself. It's almost like it had to happen, because if he had made it back to civilization with Wilson he would've ultimately went insane. It would've never of left his side and he would probably always talk to it. It's so beautifu,l but so sad at the same time. It's like the ball had some type of energy and knew this is when it was time to part ways. As a teenager watching this I cried in the movie theater. It was one of the saddest things I've ever seen in a movie, now as a 34 year old man I can still cry, but not because it's sad because it's beautiful. Look at the ending. The only package that didn't get destroyed for that lady. He turned around and married her.

I always cry on this scene and if you think about it…. It’s just an object, a volleyball. But when you are so heavily isolated the way Chuck was - a volleyball is your only form of communication to anything other than yourself. And yes it’s an object yet look at the way Tom really made Chuck’s character near perfection. His acting was insane, amazing, raw, emotional, and real. Just epic. Admittedly my favorite character he has ever played in every one of his movies and easily the best Tom Hanks movie as well. Amazing job, Tom. Amazing acting. So intense.

Sigh I'm crying. It also reminds me of this cat I had growing up name Lucy. From 1996-2013 I lived with this cat and when she passed away it messed me up because we were so close. She passed before I could say goodbye. So tom hanks in this movie losing Wilson I can emphasize.

This movie is deeper than a lot of people think. That plane crash wasn't coincidence. It was a sign. I also feel like in the beginning they make it seem like his marriage was better than what it really was and they were like soulmates, but it only took 4 years for her to re-marry. Really? I feel like his character was just going through the motions before that crash. Out of the few things that were salvageable after that plane crash wilson would be the most important. At first it's like "wtf is he going to do with a volleyball?" That volleyball kept him sane. Sanity is what kept him alive. It kept him sharp. He would second and third guess himself talking to that volleyball keeping him on point. I know what it feels like to be cut off from the world and isolated. Most of the time It's the things we overlook and take for granted that are the most important. Which was ultimately himself in this case. It kept him locked in for those years. It gave him an imagination which built to a routine/system to give him a reason to wake up and fight another day. That's not insanity that's sanity. It was more than just a volleyball. It was him. His alter ego. Wilson was just an extension of himself. A guy that he needed to tap into before he moved on in life. His bloody hand print used for the face. It was an object challenging/channelling himself to survive and evolve. I dont think he would've survived/got off that island without it. He just didn't lose a sentimental belonging. He lost a part of himself. It's almost like it had to happen, because if he had made it back to civilization with Wilson he would've ultimately went insane. It would've never of left his side and he would probably always talk to it. It's so beautifu,l but so sad at the same time. It's like the ball had some type of energy and knew this is when it was time to part ways. As a teenager watching this I cried in the movie theater. It was one of the saddest things I've ever seen in a movie, now as a 34 year old man I can still cry, but not because it's sad because it's beautiful. Look at the ending. The only package that didn't get destroyed for that lady. He turned around and married her.
