Great vlog Micheal and Jo. Worksop Town Lock not for the faint hearted... I take it you moored up at the Lock keeper pub. From there I think you might agree the canal move on into some great countryside and quite a few staircase locks ahead. Don't look as though the algae boat made much of a difference on that part of the canal. Look forward to your next installment. Have fun and keep safe...
Once past shireoaks, the locks begin! Including a staircase. But worry not, they're all easy, & the scenery is stunning. Well worth the effort. Beware when going back below worksop, it's possible to get hung up going down as subsidence has made one particular lock quite tight (unless it's been fixed). Try & ensure there's no floating rubbish alongside the boat as it will jam.
Winding your way back to London now, and the end of your travels I guess. When we came through it took us a total of 6 hours to get from Osburton Locks to just past that new concerete bridge at abour 6:30 on the video. It was definitely a lot worse when we got there only a few days after you guys. We gave up and reversed back 3 miles to the winding (not winding) hole at Ranby. We are now back where we started in Retford after a week. We ware staying put until the weed boat goes past, but this cooler wetter weather does seem to be damping it down a little. We will probably pass you on the way - or more likely you will pass us! Glad you like the canal, we have been to the terminus twice now, in Autumn and Spring, so we want to get back up there again before we decide where to next for us.
We call Osberton Stable Bridge 'Spider bridge' because, if you look up, you will see the whole underside is one massive spider web! We have moored a few times opposite the 'pony' field on the outskirts of Worksop without incident but it can be shallow. Town Lock is also known as 'banana' lock due to the folded shape of the offside gate arm. Glad you are enjoying the canal, it is a hidden gem, despite the algae.
Welcome to our canal, Shireoaks to the tunnel is the best bit, enjoy the locks. Wise move not to stop in Worksop at town lock but every canal has its dodgy / unsavoury bit
In winter, we plow snow. In summer, you plow weeds . . . That pumping station has similar architecture to the Cruquis in Heemstede, NL. Three massive coal-fired stations were used to drain the Haarlemermeer, the lake where Schiphol Airport now resides. I believe the engines and pumps came from Britain. Michael seems to be into these things. The Cruquis is a world engineering heritage site. Last of its kind standing.
I’ll have to visit someday; I’ve been to Schipol, but didn’t know about the Cruquis engine. Looks like it’s a beam engine design by a company in Cornwall. Hopefully one day I’ll see it for myself! M
Great to see you where I grew up, sorry about the town centre! Lol. As you came through the centre itself you passed a carpark on your left where back in the late 90's moored a narrow boat cafe called the Gongoozlers rest.....last seen moored up in Braunston, very popular back in the day. A lovely stretch of canal if tainted by the centre. My grandparents latterly lived near the Bracebrisge pump house and my dad spent his early years in Rhodesia. Great video, stay safe......Happy cruising.
It seems the more shade the less Algae. Maybe the weed boat was between you guys and the weeds last night and didn't clear your path. LOL More good water then weedy water today.

Is the abundance of allege due to such low traffic on the canals during the lockdown? I am thinking much less silt being churned up by boats that the water was clearer, better able to sustain a sun loving plant to grow in extra abundance?
So dreamy. I wish I could walk alongside the canal with my dogs as my partner drove our narrowboat home down the canals. Just idyllic really. I'm hoping to make it back to the UK again for my annual visit when it's safe and hopefully I can convince a friend to come along for a narrowboat hire week as they won't let me hire one solo. I sure wish I could move over there one day but alas, the UK keeps making getting a visa harder and harder :/
Even though there's no telling what you might meet in the canal, look at it this way, as long as it's not a transient wormhole to another galaxy, things are probably going to end up reasonably okay.
'Tow Path" got me thinking about classic Western Stagecoach & teamsters. Coaches used 4 Horse teams for speed, Borax Mines used "20 Mule" Team for pull, but Narrowboats only used Teams of 1 animal? I wonder how fast a Narrowboat could go with a 4 Horse team of trotters
Hmm... probably not all that fast, actually. There’s this thing called “hull speed”, which is the maximum speed you can get a hull up to through water, and it’s dependent on a whole lot of factors, but once you reach it no amount of oomph is going to get you moving any faster. As these boats are REALLY not hulled for speed I’d say it’s above one horse, but probably well below 4, and a 20 mule team would just look silly. M
with a narrow boat one horse is more than enough. once moving, the horse doesn't have to work hard to keep the boat moving at a horses walking speed. starting is a different ball game, a horse may spook as the boat is not free moving. some training is needed to get the horse used to just leaning forward and waiting for the boat to move.
The packet boats did about 10mph on the flat, though the locks of course slowed things down a bit. That's with 2 horses tied front and rear, though the boats were built lighter than the freight boats.
You could tell the weed boat had been through, in fact probably the only boat! There was a faint path to be seen and any algae left was clearly no longer attached to anything. Still, it wouldn't take much to give you a nasty prop wrap. What a nice canal, I had no idea. Think what it'll be like when they get through to Chesterfield? Is there a timescale on that?
@@MinimalList Not quite half past eight? Sorry, I assume the 'z' was a typo and not an indication of GMT? 2029? Hmmm, in the scheme of things, not too far, but when you are already 73, it's a long, long way.

That pumping station would make a magnificent home, but 24 flats? What a pity, from inside I bet you won't have any clues you are in such an imposing building, it will filled with little white box rooms. Still, I suppose it's better than letting it rot.
In normal circumstances theres a good coffee shop by Town Lock, I'm glad you noticed the 20' high walls, I think I mentioned before. I'm not totally convinced that the weed boat doesnt actually seed the canal with weed, they never appear to have much effect.
Is gas for cars obsolete these days when all commercials talk about electric cars? If not I think CRT could get a new source of income by starting production of gas from all that weed and algae on the canals, especially in greater London and as we have seen on the Chesterfield canal.
New gasoline / petrol engine cars will apparently be banned in the UK entirely in a few years, and they’re definitely going the way if they dodo... but biodiesel generation from all that algae’s not a bad idea! M
