I saw a lot of reactions to this song and you were one of the ones who caught the essence and meaning of it the best. Over the time, Rush was being labeled as "nerd music", "too complex to understand", so people try too hard when in fact all of their songs are actually pretty straight forward. Neil used some uncommon words and phrase constructions, yes, but that's because he never underrated the people that would listen to the songs, never thought "people are too dumb to understand this, let me use a more simple vocabulary". He once said in an interview: "I'm writing, if I can understand it, anyone can".
Good job and glad you're passing the message to your daughter. This new generation is becoming absurdly attached to the "seem" over the "be".

One really cool thing about Rush is, Geddy Lee (the lead vocalist) is a fanatic fan of baseball. You will often see him sitting in the front row behind home plate during televised games of the Toronto Blue Jays. Geddy has a baseball that has been signed by every modern day player with 3,000 hits or more. There is a Geddy Lee exhibit at the Negro Leagues Baseball Hall of Fame in Kansas City. Getty donated over 500 baseballs signed by Negro League players to them. There's a video on youtube of Geddy approaching Albert Pujols and asking him to sign his legendary baseball after Pujols got his 3,000th hit.

Dirk was sitting behind home (his usual seat?) the day that the "Big Maple" became the first Canadian citizen to throw a no-no on Canadian soil. Of course, he was wearing a Seattle Mariners jersey at the time. That said, history was made and I'm an M's & a Rush fan so it was an especially fun game to watch. And the Toronto Blue Jays came into existence the same year as the Seattle Mariners. Both teams played their inaugural season in 1977. The Jays have done rather better over the years, but we had Junior, the "Big Unit", Edgar (Garr) and Ichiro so we still had a good reason to go to the games💯⚾👍

Geddy graciously donated all of his memorabilia to the museum. He said he couldn't keep it in good faith, knowing it should all be in that museum... Pretty cool, I'd say.

@@JimiBurleigh During the pandemic when no fans were allowed to attend MLB games, they placed placards of fans faces in the seats where the TV cameras were focused most. It was good to see the placard of Geddy in a seat behind home plate in Toronto during those days.

You definitely caught the essence of this song. The drummer, Neil Peart, wrote most of the lyrics, and they were often thought-provoking and introspective. He’s affectionately called “The Professor“ by fans not only because of his technical proficiency on drums, but also due to his way with words. The song Freewill is a great example, plus it has a badass instrumental jam in the middle. Cheers and best wishes to your daughter.

You get it. This song never gets old. It's so fitting throughout our entire lifetimes. "Some will sell their dreams for small desires"... As adults, most of us do this every day. We settle in a job so we can live in a nice area or start a family... I wanted to be clown, and ended up an accountant...smh...lol. Yes, three guys doing multiple things. Lol. Yes, you got it! All three of the members of Rush lived in the suburbs and felt like outsiders. Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee met in junior high when they were 13 and formed a friendship over their humour and music. Alex was the one who started the band at 16. You are a great Dad giving your daughter that advice. It's so hard for little ones these days. The push to fit in is hitting kids younger and younger.

About my 10 reaction I watched from you today (it's raining hard so) I really appreciate how you not only feel the music but you are really good at breaking down the lyrics too. Rush is great for both. Best 3 piece band ever IMO. You want the hardest RUSH songs look at their first album. In fact watch Working Man live in Cleveland for Neil's final performance. It rocks so hard and they put a nice twist on the live version opening.

Way to go! You picked up on the song's meaning quicker than most reactors!
Yes, only 3 musicians. Neil Peart, arguably the best drummer of all time - G.O.A.T. Geddy Lee, arguably, the G.O.A.T. bass player of all time. Lastly, the most underrated rock guitarist - Alex Lifeson.
BTW, Neil Peart wrote all the lyrics! He was a genius besides being the 🥁 G.O.A.T.
Anything you want to know about Rush, ask me! Been listening to them since I was 12 years old (1978).

Rush’s goal was to be “the world’s smallest symphony orchestra.” They wanted to have as big a sound as they could without adding musicians to the band, so Geddy started playing keyboards, both he and Alex added foot pedals, Neil added various percussion instruments and eventually electronic drums and voila! The greatest band on Earth!
This was song that really hooked me. This song hit home to us suburban dreamers. I wasn’t an outcast by any stretch, but I was friends with some who were. You should watch the video for this song, not to react, just to watch. This was Neil’s experience, growing up as an outcast and always being an introvert, even after success. I think if you really want to dive into Rush, you need to listen to 2112 (twenty-one-twelve). It’s the epic, title track to their breakout album in 1976. You need some time, it’s a bit over 20 minutes long and is comprised of seven suites, from Overture to Grand Finale.

I think it's the only song they ever released where they had to resort to using tracks, because creating the whole thing in one take in the studio was too challenging on a tight recording schedule.
I'd guess they eventually got it all memorized where they could do it live, but iirc that's what they said in the 'Beyond the Lighted Stage" documentary.

It only just started but man I'd love to point out that it opens in sevens rather than fours or eights or threes or sixes which are the familiar rhythms we are used to. But literally just listen for the downbeat and then count out one two three four five six seven one two three four five six seven and you will truly feel how amazing this odd but shifting beat is. And of course they come out of it now again like any good sign that uses strange time signatures to something more straight to really drive the point home. But sevens is the theme for this one for sure!

Loved what you're saying a little bit through it man interpreting the lyrics and the feeling and so right man it seems to be timeless. I would say though get a blast of something slightly heavier from maybe as little as 5 years earlier. From the album 2112, but from the B side cuz the a side is this long story which I've seen people react to but it's like 20 minutes long but anyway it's mind blowing but anyway the other side side B of the record album, has five Standalone individual songs and they're all incredible. So really any of them are fantastic but I would suggest, do this one called something for nothing. This will give you insight into where this rocking band was at slightly before this '80s technology. And they used the new technology masterfully and they continued to but I think it's really important to hear where they came from and that's not even their early shit that's just from like 1975 or something.
